And here in the United States people laugh at me because I am enjoying my bike they think I am cheap to buy a car. I do have a car but I prefer to ride my bike most of the time. The freedom, the fun and the exercise that you get from a bike is incredible.

If I were to ride a bike to work, it would take about 90 minutes to go 16 miles. (Big hills and lots of traffic lights.) Funny thing is that on some days by car it takes me over an hour.

There is something elegant about a Dutch person on a bike. It is the upright riding position, no rush, no sweat... so casual and "laid back."

I live in a car dependent USA city. It was very sad seeing my grandparents lose mobility freedom when they could no longer drive. They were still physically mobile, but the infrastructure and development pattern was incredibly hostile to alternatives to driving. Without family around and people that could be the drivers the social isolation would’ve been severe.

One of the great, and often overlooked benefits of cycling infrastructure. You see a lot of mobility scooters here. People with disabilities, but also older people use them who no longer can or want to drive and don't have the physical condition to ride a bike. ua-cam.com/video/xSGx3HSjKDo/v-deo.html

Giving birth in the Netherlands is a difficult job. First the newborn, no issue... Then the bike, my God, those women suffer so much. When I moved to the South of Europe my parents asked a few times: "How's it going". No concern while selling furniture and tools. One day I said:" I sold my bike", both looked in amazement and said: "You are really going now aren't you"? An American without a car is as rare as a Dutch without a bike. A few months ago I finally got my second bike... One for shopping, one for fun and speed.

You can compare it to riding a car vs race car driving...also not a good idea to do on a public road. In the netherlands we have 2 words "fietsen" (meaning cycling...in your normal clothes...at normal speeds...doing everyday things)....and "wielrennen" (speed cycling...done for sport...lycra and helmet wearing). But cycling is just a normal form of transportation here.

Bicycle lanes here in Slovakia simply don't exist, and the drivers are maniacal. I always give cyclists as much room as possible, but not every driver here does the same.

John Rawlins What you seem to miss is that cycling is a completely normal mode of transportation here. Not a sport. In fact most cyclists travel in a very leisurely tempo. Around 10 km/h. Our entire infrastructure and the traffic laws are designed with this in mind. For example: the greater the expected difference between the speed of cars and of cyclists, the more seperation between motor lanes and cycle lanes.

I live on the Mojave Desert in Southern California, U.S.A.. I'm 82 and bought an electric bike a few months ago. Sadly the roads around the area in 29 Palms are so dangerous for bike riders that I really can't use my bike the way I had originally planned to use it unless I want to never make it to 83! The roads around my area don't even have shoulders, let alone bike lanes. California now has over 40 million inhabitants, and only a few areas in the state have any safe areas where bike riders are welcomed.

It's great to see children and the elderly using their bikes calmly and safely.
Kids on bikes in my country run fast without looking around. They need to know that they are not professional cyclists!
And the old people sometimes drive too slowly because they don't have enough pedaling power.
Accidents often occur due to lack of attention and not being able to see cars or pedestrians.
I want drivers in my country to know that most accidents can be prevented by always looking to the left and right no matter what they are driving and being careful at all times.

Imagine how much saver the roads would be if half of the people driving a car weren’t unpredictable, frightened, blind and reacting slow?
    With all respect…☝️👵
My 76yo dad prefers biking but he drives the car relatively well and is quit predictable I’d say.
Apart from leaving his indicator on until he has to use it again.😅
But my mom who is panicky and not as confident behind the wheel was unpredictable and simply dangerous.
She sold her car after 3 incidents and a whiplash in 1 year, because she has alternatives.
And I’m grateful that she has that FREEDOM!!

Of course they are not wearing helmets. They have separated and/or great bike infrastructure. Also, since there are so many people riding a bike around, average speed is Very slow in most streets and lanes. Because they are crowded. But in many other countries like mine, riding a bike is dangerous. We mostly don't have lanes and have to use car roads. And drivers are very aggressive and they don't care about us. Roads are in bad shape with a lot of cracks and potholes so wearing a helmet (especially for road bikes where your body position is specific) is not a bad idea.
