My eye fell on this interface. I did some research before I buy this audio interface and came to your video. Great review man. You really convinced me to buy one.
Great vid. Had this interface for several years (got it when it sold for $125). You helped confirm (expand) my knowledge of it. One thing that might help others is that if you are using phantom power (and say 250ohm headphones that require power as well), be sure to plug in the 9v. Otherwise, you will get audio glitches and the quality of the overall sound will suffer!
(2021 review): Super informative, and great structure! I was easily able to watch till the end and learned so much. Nothing was boring, everything said was important information and not a breath was wasted.
As always, great video, thank you very much for it. I am very surprised with the sound quality, I've tried behringer interfaces about 10 years ago and they were very low quality, felt like one of those recording toys for children. It's really great to see that they improve their quality while still remaining affordable for people on a budget. And one last thing - That guitar sound on the Gibson! Damn! Waiting for part 2!
I was also very negative towards Behringer for a long time. It wasn't until a few years ago that I tried one of their U-Phoria interfaces and it changed my mind. I think that they're offering some really good bang for buck for entry-level gear nowadays! I've been recording part 2 this week and I ended up editing out a part where I went over the signal chain for the Gibson in that mix. Maybe I'll find a way to put it back in :)
I didn't end up finding a good way to adding the guitar details in, so here's a quick rundown of the signal chain: - Gibson LP Classic - Boss OC-2 - JHS Muffuletta on the Civil War circuit - Marshall JCM800 - Two Notes Torpedo Reload - Preamp on the UMC404HD - Two Notes Wall Of Sound speaker/mic emulation
This is generally all new to me and I really appreciate you putting this together. I had my eye on the Behringer 404HD and this really helped me understand it better. Off to part II!
Oh, I forgot to ask . . . you mentioned the Phantom Power in the context of a condenser mic. What is Phantom Power and why is it necessary for that type of mic? thx.
Thanks so much! Yeah, condenser (also known as capacitor) microphones require power in order to operate. In the "old days" microphones used to come with their own power supply, and some still do. But it's much more common nowadays for condenser microphones to use the power supplied from the preamp itself, known as phantom power. It's a 48 volt power supply sent through one of the 3 pins of an XLR cable that allows the condenser mic to reproduce sound.
Thank you for such a clear and concise video. I have been looking for the right interface, and you have really sold the behringer to me as a welcomed addition for my studio set up.
Goodness Chad I know I'm way too late to the party but this song gives me so many travelling in a Greyhound bus vibes. Great tune as usual, I only wish you have more stuff coming regularly but as usual the good stuff has to come in slow and small dosage.

Hey, how u doin? The four playback outputs works as outputs of your DAW, so you can set some sequence chanels in each output. Most of the time is used for live performances, you can for example, set the master track in 2 chanels (L1&R2) the third chanel for the click track and the fourth for the vocal guide track just for monitoring. There are interfaces that have even 18 inputs and 20 playback otputs as the Behringer Usb Umc1820 , so you can set each chanel of your DAW in the outputs of the interface and plug each one in your mixer and you can change the volume of each one independently for live backround playback. My english is no good at all, I'm from Mexico. I hope this helps. Thanks for the video, Im subscribing!
In my Opinion "Behringer" is a Awesome Developer and Fair Seller, for a Big Money Pocket and the small Money Pocket too, most for the small! And when you get a Gear thats a bit Noisy...for 20 Bucks...ähm...its ok for 20Bucks! Otherwise you get "NOTHING" for 20 Bucks! Think about that! Since Behringer have a Deal with the Music Network, and Midas, they are High End, in some certain things, Hardware...i got the X32, the first Roll Out of them! And its a Awesome Mixer... and the new "Wing" ...crazy ...Awesome! Nice Video Dude, you do it all...nice! Good Review!!!
Get the focusrite Scarlett 2i2 2nd Generation it was my first interface I have both interfaces and I’ve had more issues with the 404 in the past 2 months then I have with the Scarlett which I’ve had for 2 years
This has become my daily everything for audio, use it for recording my mics and DJ Mixer, voice chat, gaming, everything. I've even used as a an output interface for Virtual DJ, RekordBox and Traktor using the AB switch to create a monitor channel for the DJ software. It's a shiny black & silver swiss army knife, just make sure you update to the 4.59 driver if you are having any issues in win 10.
It's also worth mentioning that the mono button on the 404 is part of the monitoring area and has no affect while recording through usb. It's good with headphones and the outputs, but if you plug into only channel 1, pressing the mono button will not add your audio to any other channel for recording.
For whatever reason, I have not been able to get my UMC404HD to run off USB power alone, it needs the power supply. Not a big deal, but definitely ponderous. Great video though! This is my first interface and it has treated me well. Only cost me $100 too.
that's a great deal for $100! I think it's one of (if not the best) value for dollar on the market today. Glad your is working out great! I had the same problem with a Steinberg interface, turns out my USB ports weren't delivering a full 5V of power so the thing wouldn't even power on. I ran it through a powered USB hub and it worked, but it did illustrate that not all USB ports are created equal!
The camera angle makes it look kinda weird :). It was actually about 8" off of the neck/body joint, angled slightly towards the lower bout. Maybe it was 12" off, I can't quite remember. But that's about where I generally aim with this big, loud, dreadnought. The camera angle makes it look like I've got it pointed at a random spot behind the soundhole :D
Thanks man 😁 I'm almost to the status of "jack of all trades, master of none". 😜 I recently described "my sound" as that of a band that's collectively recovering from a head injury.
Those are plugged into the main outputs on the UMC, and are connected to an external recorder so I can capture the sound for the video. That's where you'd normally connect your studio monitors/speakers.
It works great with Linux Mint didn't have to do anything just plugged it in and it started working using audacity it sees all four channels absolutely no learning curve or driver download!
hello, I bought this audio interface for my 11 year old twin guitarists! What is the use of DC 5v power if we can do everything with the USB socket? I thought you had to use the 5V DC power supply when you wanted to put it in 48v to use a microphone but in your beautiful video you switch to 48v mode without connecting the 5V DC power supply. Very good, but then what is this 5V power supply for? Sorry I use google translate.
This interface is great. It has lots of features not matched at this price range. Too bad it failed on me after only 3 years. These things should last longer.
I have one of these and my at2020 is super quiet. I do have the 48v on and still so quiet. Wondering if adding the wall adapter would give it the juice it needs
hi there! i also bought it but i dont have any idea on using the 4 inputs at once! can you please help me,? i am using adobe audition and i tried alot of times to use at 4 inputs at once but really dont know how to solve it! can you suggest me something? thank u soo much.
I'm not familiar with Audition, but from looking here (helpx.adobe.com/audition/using/connecting-audio-hardware.html) it looks like you choose a default input in the Preferences->Audio Hardware tab, and then on each track you can override the default input in the Inputs/Outputs area of each track or the mixer.
Absolutely! That's how I recorded the drums for the sample track in this video. You might need a little setup in your DAW to allow all 4 inputs, then you'll be all set!
Can you plug a jack cable in the middle of the XLR inputs? I have a pre-sonus where you can do that, and it looks like these have jack inputs within the XLR one's too
Hey, thank you for such a great video! Quick question: you mic'd up your kit with two condensers and two dynamic mics. Did you have Phantom power on? And does that damage the dynamic mics (given that the interface sends Phantom power to all 4 inputs)?
HI there! No worries about enabling phantom power across all 4 inputs when a mixture of condenser/dynamic/ribbon mics are plugged in. Modern dynamic and ribbon mics are built in such a way that they effectively "ignore" phantom power, so there's no danger of harming the mics. The only exception is if you've got an older vintage ribbon mic that isn't wired the same as modern ones. Those can be destroyed by phantom power, but you're almost certain to be safe if you're using modern microphones.
@@YHRS Great Review! I have question - can I use phantom power and line in simultanously? Like connecting my piano to 1 and 2 inputs, and then condenser mic on 3rd input? Or there is some danger to do it?
@@michastarzynski6621 phantom power is only sent over the XLR connections, so it won't be a factor with TRS or TS connections on the combo inputs. So you'll be safe connecting a mix/match of dynamic, ribbon, condenser mics and line or instrument inputs.
Could you use the 4 outs + 2 x main outs at the same time, so you'd essentially have 6 outputs going out at the same level to a mixer or something like that?
In part 2 of this review, I found that the main outputs 1/2 and the playback outputs 1/2 are duplicates of each other. Anything that you send to outputs 1 and 2 comes out both the main outputs and PB outs 1/2. Playback outputs 3/4 are independent. So it really is a 4-out interface even though it has 6 output jacks on the back.
Hello I have some questions I have a Behringer xenyx qx 1832 usb . In my church we plan to purchase this interface to record our worship. How do I connect this interface to the mixer to get the sound to record from and how hard will it be to control and fine tune the sound that comes out after service is done .
@@DUNAMISproject actually the idea is to separate each sound going into the mixer to mix them well like a separate channel for a bass guitar and drums and saxophone and vocals

Dude very informative and useful video. Much love to you brother. Just got this interface
great great video.... I learned so much. Thanks!
In my Opinion "Behringer" is a Awesome Developer and Fair Seller,
for a Big Money Pocket and the small Money Pocket too, most for the small!
And when you get a Gear thats a bit Noisy...for 20 Bucks...ähm...its ok for 20Bucks!
Otherwise you get "NOTHING" for 20 Bucks!
Think about that!
Since Behringer have a Deal with the Music Network, and Midas, they are High End,
in some certain things, Hardware...i got the X32, the first Roll Out of them!
And its a Awesome Mixer... and the new "Wing" ...crazy ...Awesome!
Nice Video Dude, you do it all...nice! Good Review!!!
Fantastic in depth review.. Thinking of buying one soon.... no need yet as i only have one condenser mic at the moment....
Thanks! And a few spare inputs never hurts, even if you've just got 1 mic to plug in :)
Dude i just bought my 404.. but I'm a bit confused about monitor A/B.. it's not working when I'm pressing the A/B button.. I'm using win 10
@@bdrmstudios2128 AFAIK it only affects the headphones, did you install the driver?
Very good video, thank you so much ! A very pleasant journey with you :)
It's also worth mentioning that the mono button on the 404 is part of the monitoring area and has no affect while recording through usb. It's good with headphones and the outputs, but if you plug into only channel 1, pressing the mono button will not add your audio to any other channel for recording.
Thank you excellent work through of the set up. It helped me because I am using Reaper too.
Super good video!
Excellent - I found I had no idea how to use this as it is completely different from the 2 channel version
Edit just got in mail and i got everything working. Cant try out some till i upgrade. When that happens i hope midi in n out works. Love it
I can't wait till Amazon delivers mine tomorrow. I'll be using it for live stuff on UA-cam with studio mics and instruments. Hope I can figure it out
Nice! I hope Amazon came through and you've been making noise with your new 404HD this week :)
i grabbed one of these used for 60, just getting around to hooking it up
Extremely useful and helpful, thanks :-)
Amazing content.
Got Fender Mustang GT100 (guitar amp), this audio device and AKG240 headphones, best combo ever bought.
Thank you. This was very helpful
11:26 - Why is there no driver for MacOS? Is this interface not compatible with Mac?
No need for one - Core audio device
The interface sounds good to my surprise.
That acoustic mic placement killed me
The camera angle makes it look kinda weird :).
Very Good explained! Thanks! 😃
Windows XP 😄 Great review, by the way, Thank you this video!
Curious: Which guy are you in the band?
Chad: Yeah!
Thanks man 😁 I'm almost to the status of "jack of all trades, master of none". 😜 I recently described "my sound" as that of a band that's collectively recovering from a head injury.
Super helpful, thank you!
21:00 you have bass, headphones, power, and two other outputs (?) on the back.
What are the red n black cables for?
Those are plugged into the main outputs on the UMC, and are connected to an external recorder so I can capture the sound for the video. That's where you'd normally connect your studio monitors/speakers.
Hi thanks for sharing! Can i use this umc404 in ipad garageband and multitrack it? Thnks
Nice bro!!
It works great with Linux Mint didn't have to do anything just plugged it in and it started working using audacity it sees all four channels absolutely no learning curve or driver download!
Thank you. Was wondering if it would work with mine!
hello, I bought this audio interface for my 11 year old twin guitarists!
REAPER fam! 😎
Hello, great video! Can you record all channels simuously into 4 different tracks in your daw?
Absolutely! That's how I recorded the drums for the sample track in this video. You might need a little setup in your DAW to allow all 4 inputs, then you'll be all set!
Can you use this with in-ear monitors with backing tracks.. great videos
As long as your in-ear monitors can plug into a standard 1/4" TRS jack (or can be adapted), then sure!
brilliant thank you
Can you plug a jack cable in the middle of the XLR inputs? I have a pre-sonus where you can do that, and it looks like these have jack inputs within the XLR one's too
Thanks! 😊
hi, since usb can power the interface, what is the purpose of using the AC adapter? thanks
I noticed that you have a Focusrite Scarlett, how does the Behringer compare to the Scarlett? Which of the two do you recommend more?
Thanks for the review. Oh, you're lucky ... having a real drum set at home :)
You don't need any interface if you have a usb mixer
@@DUNAMISproject actually the idea is to separate each sound going into the mixer to mix them well like a separate channel for a bass guitar and drums and saxophone and vocals
