The fact that both channels have seperate effects is amazing! I didn't know that when I bought it and I would never had known without this video, thank you!
OMG !! I racked my brain on how to use the inserts because I thought they were just returns and I was looking for a way to get the signal out of the interface. I truly had the enlightenment of my LIFE when you put the adapters together lol No shit, you saved my day xD
Good to finally know what those are for. I don't understand the advantage of using the insert as opposed to simply direct-lining a chain directly into the front input jack -- for instance, 1/4" from guitar to pedal, 1/4' from pedal to input 1. As I write this though I imagine it might be convenient for some setups to simply have the outboard effects set up via the insert and to swap gear in the front input without having to fuss with it. In any case thanks for the info!
If you use outboard gear like compressors and eq then you'd prefer to have them as inserts so all you habe to do is plug whatever Mic you want into the interface. It has its advantages in keeping signal chain a bit more clean and convenient for swapping stuff. Specially since most outboard uses line ins and outs anyway.
@@EricFaries Yes, it makes complete sense now -- this could save a lot of time and keep things clean, organized, and efficient when in workflow. Nothing worse than having to crawl behind the rack to fiddle with I/O's every time you want to swap a mic.
@@jccpiano So the only advantage is not to have to plug stuff in the front but in the back? No other benefits? Not worth the extra 30 bucks for me I guess.
Pro tip: bypassing the Behringer's preamps for less noise when recording line level devices: Use standard ts cable and plug about 80% into the insert jack (so that the tip of the cable touches the ring of the jack which is the return input).
Your's the only video that goes straight to the point and answers how to plug the pedal into a interface. Today I bought an adapter, but it didn't work without the TRS cable.
if you have 3.5 mm normal sound cables you can use them with small 3.5 to quarter inch adapters as well. The cable can be a 3.5 mm one instead of a quarter inch TRS one.
Excellent review, this kind of information about the inserts sometimes is very difficult to find for us, the novices in audio hardware. Maybe this kind of connections for inserts are common in professional audio, but is new for us. Thanks!
Absolutely! This is actually one of the many reasons why having (and using) a proper effects loop (insert) is so much preferable to simply adding effects directly to the instrument, or even worse, the mic signal:
- If you chain many pedals before the preamp (front side input on the Behringer), all the noise, interferences and the quality loss affects the (weak) signal before any amplification has taken place. These disturbances thus have a much greater impact on your recording signal. An effects loop, on the other hand, operates at line level, which is quite a bit louder than an electric guitar output and much louder than a mic signal. The interferences produced by your effects chain should be negligible to this line signal amplitude.
- Some effects like compression or limiters (the ones that affect the amplitude of a signal) are usually set up to work with line-level input signals. A guitar signal might still work, but probably not optimally. However, a mic signal is definitely not suited as an input signal for these effects. If you look at channel strips for mic signal processing (e.g., dbx 286 s), the signal is always preamplified first to bring it up to line level and then processed further.
- If you use standard effects pedals before the preamp, you sacrifice any chance of getting a balanced input signal from your instrument/mic to your interface. Effect loops use unbalanced connections (standard mono with one ground and one hot wire) by default. Since working at line level, they are relatively robust against interferences (see above), even for long cable connections and many serial throughputs. Again, this might not be of great importance for a guitar signal, but for microphones, this would mean that you would have to use an XLR-to-mono-jack adapter cable, which converts the balanced mic signal to an unbalanced one, which you would plug into your effects chain. If you use this as an input signal to the interface and amplify it with the gain appropriate for a mic-level signal, you will get MUCH more noise and interferences on your recording signal. Also, I think some interfaces by default assume a different input level for XLR vs. jack (TRS) plug, since usually an XLR corresponds to a mic and a jack corresponds to a guitar or other instrument. So you might even have to convert back from mono-jack to XLR before inserting it into the interface input. Total nightmare!
Thank you for this. I've read a few articles, but the configuration didn't click until you succinctly yet thoroughly explained it in this video. Anyone know if this can then be utilized as an external audio effect in Ableton?

I have tired the ASIO drivers, Re-installing windows (1903) and loads of other troubleshooting, Are you running 1809?
I have this exact interface model but I was wondering if there is a way to use an expression pedal with it through this Inserts. The thing is, I want to use digital wahwah but I don't know if there is a way to use an expression pedal connected to the Beringher interface to do this
It was very useful! Had a question..In this code you have shown compression pedal to the Behringer...Like that can we connect one more audio interface to inserts to add more channels? Thanks!
I mean in that case, i would say it's simpler to just get an interface that has more inputs. Especially if you can find an interface that is designed for expansion later on. These days i use the Behringer UMC1820, which already has 8 inputs, but can be expanding farther to 16 with Behringer's ADA8200.
Can I ask your help a bit? I'm still super confused :D so I'm beginner at all this, but the setup I'm trying to put together would be 2 lines: A - Behringer Crave + Behringer Superfuzz + JOYO R-09 VISION + Zoom - MS-70CDR reverb B - Arturia Keylab Essential 88 Line A would make a base drone music kinda ambient music/noise, and I would use the keyboard to play the melody on the top. Later I would also like to add some kind of drum machine or sample. So my question... how do I connect all these? Is the UMC204HD suitable to then have all these connected into my computer / recording device (Zoom H1n)? Should I connect the keyboard into my laptop directly, and the other stuff through the interface? How do I use this setup without a laptop? (live set) If the UMC204HD is not suitable, then can you suggest me something else?
So, meaning ,the inputs in inserts are TRS? Because i tried 2 monos split in inserts 1&2 and no sound, but if you pull the plugs in a half will work.that is actually i wanna know is the inserts are mono or TRS?Thanks for the vid.
..umm, so I have a wah pedal, and I guess I could use that.. but when I set it to bypass it will turn off.. actually how does this work - or how different is it then just routing it before the mic input .. and I guess you could daisy chain like a pedal board?
Yeah i would use the inserts for when you want to send already recorded audio out to a device for processing. Otherwise if you're using like a pedalboard, just have that go directly in the front input unless you want to have a clean recording of your guitar as well.
Simple and effective! Question: Main outputs - Are they balanced or unbalanced? I want to connect my monitors on XLR inputs with TRS to XLR cable. And could non inverted sound signals, (if mains are unbalanced) play correctly from monitors if connected to XLR?
The main outputs are TRS, so they are designed to go out to speaker Monitors. I've never used TRS to XLR before, but they should work just fine as i know plenty of people who use those sorts of cables while doing inserts as well.
noob question here... while using the inserts can the external gear function as an auxiliary channel where I can send any channel in my DAW mixer or each insert is hard wired for each interface input? Thanks in advance

Why my monitor sounds really small when i playback the recording? the monitor volume already high, I use samsung smarthphone headset with jeck converter to connect at Monitor port (beside the master volume and mix) .. plesse help, thankyou
Yeah man nice vid, it explains a lot! however I have a little question: can you plug more than a pedal? Like three different pedals at once? If I find the appropriate cable that is!
I would assume that if you set your pedals up in a chain and plugged the send into the beginning of the chain and the return on the end of the chain that would work
Ok, so I understand how inserts work and interact with the inputs. But here's my question where the inserts are concerned. Can the inserts be used to facilitate re-amping a recorded track? I bought a re-amp box thinking I could just route a signal out from an output through a signal chain and back into my UMC404HD using an input, but really only got a lot of noise. Could that be done using an already recorded track? Basically, I have guitar tracks on a song which were recorded with software amps, but I want to run those clean signals through external amps to use my current gear. So far everything I've tried has had 1 key part missing. lol. Can't get it done.
Hmm, i've not tried using the inserts to send the signal out to a re-amp box. From what i've found online of others having issues with re-amping with the smaller interfaces, is that they're max output level is too low, normally being around +3dbu. On larger interfaces, like my UMC1820, the output is much higher at +16dbu, so it would be able to re-amp better. That may just be a limiting factor of using these smaller models. I'd have to do research to see if any smaller interfaces pump out a higher output level, but atm i at least know this model cannot do it well.
Im thinking of buying this for my live shows. Is it true that I can send a stereo backingtrack via the Tulip playback output to the mixer and then two mono mic outputs to the mixer too from this thing?
Hmmm, you could definitely send audio from your computer to the mixer through the outputs yes, as for the mic, it would output the same way if you were setting the device to monitor the mics. At least, i'm pretty sure that if you set it so the mics go to the outputs by changing the mix, then it would only send the mic audio. I could be mistaken, i don't have this interface anymore so my memories of it are very shaky. Basically what you want is a device that has multiple outputs that the computer recognizes as separate, that way you can pick and choose what audio goes where on a software level.
Hello! I’m trying to figure out how to do something that may sound simple lol. I’m using GarageBand & Trying to plug in my phone to the interface & use it to play audio/music & record from it as well. I bought a 1/4 to male xlr cable & it doesn’t work smh. Any other suggestions?
Quick question to anyone who inserts effects into their device: Do you hear the effect on the onboard headphone monitoring? I wanna buy a noise gate especially for the summer days, when the fan is running and I really don't wanna hear the noise of it, when monitoring.
Yes, the Inserts directly connect between the input and output circuits. So all output you hear will have the effect, both to your computer, and to the headphone if you change the mix knob.
I realize this a bit old, but I'm just going to throw this out there: what is the best way to add a subwoofer into the setup. I'm using the balanced inputs on the monitors, so would it be as simple as using a pair of the RCA outs to the L/R inputs on the sub? Thanks for vid...very helpful.
A good way to add a subwoofer is to get one from the same company as you got the monitors from. They'll usually have some way of connecting to the monitors themselves.
Hey...thanks for such a quick reply! Unfortunately, the sub I have is not the same brand, and I'd hate to replace it, if it could be used. Would the RCAs out to the sub be a reasonable alternative, do you think?
@@tuxjunkie I don't own one of these interfaces but I would try the RCA's if I did. Just guessing but I don't see any reason why that wouldn't work for you. Great that this unit has so many output options. I may buy one of these soon but my speakers have a sub out jack so I don't have your problem right now. May the force be with you. ;)
Hey Eric what about the “Main Out” just next to those insert inputs? Are they to get real time audio from inputs? If so what kind of cable I need to get audio from my turn table?
Is there a way to make the processing unit (the pedal in your example) influence the entire output of the Behringer UMC204? In my case I have an equalizer and I want to EQ the entire signal that is coming out from the Behringer (USB + 4 INPUTS --> EQ --> Speakers). Any idea if this is achievable with inserts or any other way? Thanks!
The Inserts basically hijack the signal, sends it out to whatever outboard gear, and then back in to wherever you have it plugged in. So it'll do what you need :)
Eric Faries But the inserts only hijack the signal coming from the corresponding inputs, not the USB. So I’m not able to figure out how to do that. In other words I want to connect the EQ unit to control whatever is coming out of my PC which is connected to the Behringer unit through the USB input.
Can I plug my external mic preamp (I use dynamic mic) into TRS Insert input? And because I plug 2 condenser mic into XLR mic level input, does DAW would record 3 different output?
Finally ... Someone who made what I needed. Thanks a lot

I can't get his interface working in windows. I have REALLY low mic input volume. +48 on Pad OFF
I have both the UMC22 and this. The former has full loud mic input @9 oclock and the UMC204HD has barely any Mic input volume with the gain all the way up.
I have tired the ASIO drivers, Re-installing windows (1903) and loads of other troubleshooting,
Are you running 1809?
great tutorial. thank you. is there a way to connect an insert reverb to hear it singing but not record it on the daw?
I have this exact interface model but I was wondering if there is a way to use an expression pedal with it through this Inserts. The thing is, I want to use digital wahwah but I don't know if there is a way to use an expression pedal connected to the Beringher interface to do this
The effects will be recorded with the sound or i will only listen it?
How i can make in a unexpensive mode a monitoring compression with voice?
thanks for this! short and on point!
Wouldn't using 2 separate T/S cables out of the audio interface to the compressor do the exact same thing?
Nice video! do you happen to know if the insert is before or after the internal pre-amp in the UMC204HD?
Thanks for this video. How can I connect an expression pedal to this interface to use it with my plugins?
Please can you help me? If I buy the bluesky reverb pedal can I connect it straight into the insert of the umc404hd with only a insert cable?
The device manual does not explain how to connect it. You have helped me a lot. Thank you.
Yeah that's honestly why i did the video. Felt weird that a pretty good feature would get barely anything in the manual as to how to use it.
(also known as a standard stereo breakout cable...)
Will this differ from routing your guitar through the pedal, then into the input of the interface?
I have the same question. If I have 5 pedals, do I use insert, or I go straight in after my last pedal?
I love how it is so quiet even on C1
Hello sir can ask a question? the umc 204hd, it is possible to connect with the mixer thanks...
Great job ! Thank you for the video and details !
Can I ask your help a bit? I'm still super confused :D so I'm beginner at all this, but the setup I'm trying to put together would be 2 lines:
A - Behringer Crave + Behringer Superfuzz + JOYO R-09 VISION + Zoom - MS-70CDR reverb
B - Arturia Keylab Essential 88
Line A would make a base drone music kinda ambient music/noise, and I would use the keyboard to play the melody on the top. (live set)
If the UMC204HD is not suitable, then can you suggest me something else?
that was an excellent tutorial brother!
so well explained!
peace n` love x
So, meaning ,the inputs in inserts are TRS? Because i tried 2 monos split in inserts 1&2 and no sound, but if you pull the plugs in a half will work.that is actually i wanna know is the inserts are mono or TRS?Thanks for the vid.
Thank you so much for your clear explanation!
..umm, so I have a wah pedal, and I guess I could use that.. but when I set it to bypass it will turn off.. actually how does this work - or how different is it then just routing it before the mic input .. and I guess you could daisy chain like a pedal board?
I've never used TRS to XLR before, but they should work just fine as i know plenty of people who use those sorts of cables while doing inserts as well.
question. when i dont plug in headphones, and try to record. I cant listen to the tape or track later oN?
Wow I always wondered. Thank you
noob question here... while using the inserts can the external gear function as an auxiliary channel where I can send any channel in my DAW mixer or each insert is hard wired for each interface input? Thanks in advance
I would like to buy a Behringer UHC404HD. I want to record signals of a stereo synth and a mic at the same time.
My favorite preset is 48Khz or 96Khz/24bit. Could you tell me which puffer size results ca. 10ms latency?
I have a external preamp that sounds very good, If I plug in that as a insert will it bypass the preamp on the Behringer? Great video!
With only Ring is possible bypass internal preamp and to use one external preamp?
Can i use it for live performance ? I need the daw for autotune and 1/2 for main and 3/4 for custom mix on In Ear Monooring. Will it work ?
I want to plug in a record player with stereo sound. For this i want to use the direct monitor function, what is the best wat to plug in the record player?
can i send a signal from my daw to the inserts? an external conpressor for example . ?😘
Can you plug prerecorded music such as Apple Music from my iPad into the audio interface?
i thought it was for line inputs where i can record guitars/bass or any instruments that can be plugged in
What if the pedal only has a stereo out?
my berhinger interface does nit show any clip signal lights when i connect an input, can you help me out...but the output works well when i monitor it from my pc
what's the benefit of this vs just running your signal through the pedal into the input?
Hello I have umc404HD and compressor Klark teknik 76KT. I want to use klark teknik as a"plugin" in pro tools. I tried this chain but i couldnt run it. Can you please help me with that to run it please? Thank you So much.
Hello Eric, I have a drum rack in Ableton Live and I would like to route the drum sounds through a pedal like your CS400 and then record the whole thing in Abelton Live. Is that possible with the UMC204HD and if so, can you explain how? I'm a beginner and I'm overwhelmed to think about it. Thank you very much and greetings from Germany.
I would assume that if you set your pedals up in a chain and plugged the send into the beginning of the chain and the return on the end of the chain that would work
there is a possibility to put an external preamp in the insert and bypass the Midas one?
Man, this is beyond awsome
I want to use "Crimple" in my everyday conversations
Great video! The insert routing of this interface is serial or paralel? As I think is serial but i'm not sure of it. Hope you can help me with this.
Very cool. Any way to use one pedal to affect all the inputs at same time?
Is it possiple to use the Insert as an Input for an mono line source?
Im thinking of buying this for my live shows. Is it true that I can send a stereo backingtrack via the Tulip playback output to the mixer and then two mono mic outputs to the mixer too from this thing?
I dont know if tulip is the correct word. In Dituch it is. Im talking bouth the A 1 and 2 smaller red and white outputs
@@EricFaries thanks a lot!
May the force be with you. ;)
Can I use another adapter and connect both inserts to one (in this case)compressor?
Hey Eric what about the “Main Out” just next to those insert inputs? Are they to get real time audio from inputs? If so what kind of cable I need to get audio from my turn table?
The main outs are to send audio to your speakers.
Great how to video!
can i usw these inserts to put my E Drum Set in, to get the stereo sound?
Possible to send playback through pc through insert fx?
Very helpful information. Thanks!
