Did you sacrifice a washer and dryer for drums? Finally a man with good priorities.
seriously where is his washer and drawer
@@bane8257he uses the bathtub 😂😂😂
I sacrificed my cupboard for drums - although I do own more guitars than t shirts so
@ that’s real
Regarding acoustic treatment, I had a friend round today who asked if the panels were speakers, I explained that they were really simple, I took him to an untreated room and clapped my hands... he was almost dumbstruck when I clapped in my main room. acoustic panels are your friend, even if they only remove the immediately obvious echo of your room.
You know it's funny, I've watched a ton of your "MTV Cribs" style studio tours and I've seen these remote desktop setups in the tracking rooms a ton and never thought much of what gizmo makes it work. Currently planning a new studio myself and had thought about using an ipad to remote control my desktop for solo recording sessions, but I had never heard of/considered an IP extender. Good stuff and congrats on 150 studio tours.
haha yeah there’s a bunch of ways to do it now, but this is the way that seems to suit my workflow best. Thanks for watching man.
Curious which IP extender you're using? Need this for my remote drum set-up! Thanks...
i am a mixing engineer and i build my setup in a way, that i dont have to think about "how do i patch my hardware". this allow me to concentrate on the music itself, instead of all the tech and signal flow stuff. i have a ferrofish A32 Dante, and my hardware is patched in. in Protools everything is named setup and with H/W insert delays. It works just perfect.
Good info as usual brother!!! Thank you for what you do
Appreciate it!
Great video. You mentioned candles near the end. I highly recommend the Soap Box ( Covington GA), they sell amazing candles. My favorite is the Leather Scent. Every one that visits my studio loves it
What's up Jason, thanks dude.
I recently got a Galaxy 32 also. What I did to expand is add an Orion 32 (Gen 3 in my case) and connected via MADI. Took 10 mins to route MADI out to MADI in and it's been off to the races ever since. Absolutely stellar setup and zero issues! Great video.
Love to hear it!
"filled with sand", very interesting. motown had a dirt floor. earth dampening is a fascinating concept. 🍻
Thanks for the massive shoutouts Andrew! We love what you do for the music community so much. Keep up the beautiful work!
Franklin audio!!
Where can we listen to music that were recorded in this studio?
Thanks for the Franklin DI headsup. Definitely need one of those. Tired of running long cables to my mixer.
What a great way to end a long day .. cold coffee, glasses polished .. headphones sucked on the head :)
Let’s go!
Fantastic vid yet again bro! Would be interested in seeing some more long form recording session content with clients. BTS style, and super un-cut
And I have watched you visit each studio! Thank you for sharing your valuable info. 🙏
Nice to see how a successful studio is set up. I'm in my basement and far from turning a profit but have managed to be on the right path. I have 64 analog inputs and outputs. All my gear is ready to go all the time via Avid HD Native PCIe and the Digidesign 192 16x8x8 x4. Icon proG2 plus 3 ext for DAW contol. 2 mio Xl's for MiDi routing. This was the best way to go for the price. I Would recommend this way for anyone on a budget. Great video.
Get yourself a semi pro printer, like a canon pro something, and that way, you'd have beautiful photos in your beautiful studio.
Really curious about your amp head setup. If they're always on and aren't connected to their own cabs, how's the load being handled? As far as I know, the Ox can only take the load for 1 amp head and the Kahayan switcher unit doesn't look like it handles any load so what's taking the load of the heads that are on but aren't being routed to the Ox. Thanks!
Amp heads are routed to kahayan switcher
@@itsstudiotime Thanks. I think you're putting your amp heads at risk by having them always on. You shouldn't turn on an amp head if it's not connected to a speaker (or load box, e.g. Ox Box) as this can damage the amp, especially with tube amps, as the output transformers need a load (speaker/load box) to function properly and can overheat without one.
You and a few others inspired me to completely change my routing to an always on setup. OMG... so good now. I went with a Ferrofish A32Pro Dante connected to an RME Digiface Dante which gives me the Ferrofish routing matrix + the Dante routing Matrix + RME TotalMix FX for mix routing and faders on all channels. The Ferrofish also routes ADAT to my Apollo x6 for tracking and Low Latency Monitor Mix with UAD plugs.
Nice!
@@itsstudiotime Stolen from your Bentley House video. That's where it started. Mine is nothing like the Bentley House but that is where the Dante spark fired.
People that have this much music gear-it makes me wonder how they afford it and how much music they actually release.
They run businesses that are successful. Usually producers or engineers. Not a lot of songwriters need this much crap.
Yep
Andrew , you’re a gem. So very intuitive, and I always learn something new watching your vids. One thing I’ve often wished to hear/see you show , is for lack of a better phrase, the “non hardware insert hybrid setup”.
As in , someone who would be coming out , but going out to a summing mixer that may have separated busses ( cascaded). Hence , not returning to DAW until it’s analogously summed to a 2 mix.
I’m quite sure I F’d that explanation up , but I have a feeling you understand. 😂
Thanks man, no that totally makes sense. I used to have to do that workflow when I had the burl B32 and the apollos. But in essence you would just operate the same as you would going to the summing mixer. Spread stuff out how you choose. Then insert the gear on the tracks you desire.
Andrew, for all the great ideas! What brand/model is that IP extender in your drum room? I've been using the Logic Remote app on an iPad, but would love to have more control over the session from the drum throne. Thank you!
ua-cam.com/video/0K2EeqcsLoY/v-deo.htmlsi=la8HZI8VkpyxeHk2
I don't record live drums but that overhead bar in the drum room is genius.
Haha well it’s certainly helpful! Thanks man
Awesome, bro! Thanks for the great content as usual. QQ: How do you setup / use the SANSAMP? Cheers!
Great question it’s a part of a 3 input system. DI, sansamp, and actual amp in another booth.
Beautiful Studio setup 😮💨 May I ask where or who makes those brackets that hold your acoustic panels up on the wall? very sleek design. Thanks in advance.
They're called french cleats. You can get them at hardware stores or amazon.
@ awesome! I appreciate the response, thank you! 🫡
Love your studio. A lot of GOOD INFO today. Thanks for the post. From the middle of the desert of New Mexico.,. Thanks again.
Dude this place is awesome and you definitely know your stuff. I love seeing all that gear! Also, tell us about that Butch Vig picture on your desk!
Thanks man. It's from a video I made with him that came out a couple of weeks ago.
I always see mic lockers with the mics out and ready to go. Is there no concern about leaving them out in the open and possibly collecting "dust"? I tend to keep mine in cases, or, if out on a stand, I have dust covers on them.
Not a bad idea to have some little plastic covers for capsules but I don't worry about that. Someday I'll get some little baggies that i'll then immediately lose lol.
What is the lapel mic your using in this video?
Great video - beautiful studio! I have one question which wasn’t answered but I am very interested in, regarding the „always on“ principle: how do you switch everything on / off. Separately and manually or do you have some kind of master power switch you can recommend and which is save also for analog gear?
The always on, is probably better described as always setup. But yes to power off, the equipment runs to power conditioners. So you switch off the power conditioners in the racks.
@ thanks for answering! Just to be sure: the gear is switched on permanently and only the power conditioners are used? Is that save / healthy for the equipment? And if so, can you recommend a specific system?
150 studios...wow bro! I'm loving the practicalities that you've acquired
Where did you get that cool lighted sign?
That SSL UF8 would be a nice addition to my home studio. 😍
I think you'd like it.
Hi Andrew, how are you doing? Good video of studio ideas. I have a question. I have two different summing mixers. Do you know of a good switch box I can use to switch my audio between the two? I would like do that during the premix stage. Any ideas will be appreciated.
Nice video. What about the desk in drums room? Where did you bought it? Link, please?
Awesome video as always, I'm also on sweetwater every day lol. Can't wait to see more about the SSL interface! 👀
Thank you, always scoping out new stuff! Working on a full production using the SSL interface, should be coming out soon.
Hey Andrew! Sweet video! What material did you put in the panels?
I got my panels from Music city acoustics. The few panels I made have rockwool safe and sound in them.
People like to crap on Antelope but they sound great and offer great flexibility and affordable I/O. Have you had any issues?
Literally none, it's amazing
Looks great, but where can we go th hear recording you have done in your studio.
It would be nice to hear how your studio sounds. As we all know, it's about the sound.
Do you have a group you're working with that has an album out that you recorded from your studio?
Great question, at some point this year we're going to build a player to add to my website of projects that have been recorded here. It's a hodgepodge of drum sessions, vocal sessions, full band, mixes etc. But that is a goal of mine is to build out a playlist of stuff that we've done full production on here. Stay tuned. Otherwise my past work are records with Artists like Weezer, Sum 41, John Legend, Dawes, Jim James, Tegan and Sara, James Blake, Justin Timberlake. Some engineering, some assistant engineering. I generally don't harp on credits in videos because it's tacky, I'd prefer to share things that I've learned from the work I've done that others can apply to their work.
Great video and info! I do not like to boast either but when I was a camera man I worked on a couple of films with Travolta.. Not John, his little brother Joey. 😁 ✌🏼
Such a great studio! I wish I could afford a setup like that! Love the tips thanks!!
I appreciate it! What are you trying to do in the studio?
@itsstudiotime Thank you for all your videos that i love !!! I am very curious to understand how your hybrid mixing is patch (antelope, ferrofish, eqs, comps etc) to get no latency
The antelope has hardware delay compensation, so it compensates for the latency making workflow effortless. It rules.
@@itsstudiotime but hardware compensation is for protools and not logic pro, right ?
Thanks for the tips! What KVM switch/extender are you using at time stamp 13:49?
I might have to implement that keyboard rig setup
Thanks for the list. The always ON aspect is an interesting concept. While I completely agree that often times if it takes too long to patch things you could lose energy in a session. That said what I worry about with having everything pre-patched is the sounds you create can become too repetitive. I have a lot of different mic’s and a lot of different flavour preamps. I generally like to match an instrument, player, and musical part, to a mic-preamp combo on the session. I might also change mic’s and pres between takes if the music warrants. My workaround is to have all of my analog world patched through a patch bay so some of these choices can be made quickly. Anyway, thanks again for the info and I enjoy your channel.
Of course man thanks for watching. The always setup doesn't limit the ability to switch things. It just allows for immediacy. Nothing is permanent in my studio haha, I'm changing stuff and trying new gear and setups literally every day.
Did you sell the Apollos because of the Console app?
haha that’s a fun reason, but no I didn’t.
Didn’t want this video to end. Such a good watch
Appreciate it!
Just heard Jake Reed studio tour coming! Very excited. 🔥
Jake is the man!
This was such a fun video to watch. I'll definitely check out Magic Mind.
Thanks Laney, you'd love it!
wow your studio is amazing thanks for all the ideas!!
Thanks, great drumming and covers! Shout out to your dad for being awesome.
What is your desk?
Dangerfox
Lovin it ..Thanks for a great video!!!
Thanks!
Don't tube mics need at least 30 minutes to warm up once you plug them in? Seems that would slow down testing different mics on a source
I'm sure that the more the tube warms up the more consistent the sound you'll get. But with that being said I've worked with hundreds of engineers for close to 2 decades and never on a session has a producer or engineer said "how many minutes has the mic been plugged in? we must wait 30 mins" lol. Neither have I haha. You plug the shit in, get a level and you go. In an ideal world you have it plugged in ready to go before hand - but no one on a real session is counting minutes after plugging in a mic, or a compressor for that matter.
@@itsstudiotime Honestly great to hear, that'll save me so much time switching between my tube mic and my solid state ones, thank you.
Why don't you just use a mixing console? This seems like the most difficult way to patch and route gear.
Patching gear is the same process as selecting a plug-in. I had a mixing console, it didn't have automation, it was huge and in the way, had to physically patch gear anytime I wanted to use it. I will jump between 2-3 different sessions a day - can't be doing all that.
Where is your headphone mixer getting signal from in your side rig?
From the headphone module, over ethernet. It's the P16 system.
Curious as to what brand model IP extender you’re using for your keyboard and mouse in the side car? Appreciate all your videos 🐐
oh and what s the brand of this ip connector for your "remote contol" (i like this name :) ?
I don't remember - there's a video on this channel that shows exactly how to set it up and has a link to it. Check that out.
@@itsstudiotime which video? just searched forever lol. Very curious as well about the IP extender route. Thanks, Andrew.
I didn’t find it either!

Triad Orbit are simply pure classic
What desk is that?
dangerfox custom console desk
I’m from there! Hit up Shawn at red alert use to track there. He is right there to.
What?
14:30 if you're looking for a name it's kind of relevant but not, in the computer world a computer on a cart would be called a crash cart. And since it's in the drum room… Maybe it is the perfect name?
That’s a great name.
AmpWall 2:12 hehehe! cool stand design!
Great video, thanks. Have you ever made a "Trash studio tour" video? 😅
Just my own ;)
Could you do a top 10 of your least favorite studios?
hahaha That sounds cooler than it would be. I honestly love all the studios I've been to. I was kidding in the intro. I'm not a super serious person.
Wow amazing ❤
Appreciate you!
Nice studio:)!
Appreciate it
7. Side-KICK ☺
Franklin audio are the
Ambiance is everything.
1:48 Put a Water Cooler or Coffeee bar in your drum closet.
But I have a kitchen right next to it with both of those things, I need shelves for more drums in the drum closet.
LOL my everything mic is a 58
Love it
😍😍😍😍woow
Call the side rig "Johnny 5."
That's pretty good
what must your electric bill be??
about $100 or so.
hi !
Hey there
no studio is trash
haha Juilian - love seeing you in the comments bro. I'm just messing around to make a fun intro.
You stand corrected.... Mine is fucking attrocious... lol.
What are your control room dimensions?
@@itsstudiotime Image kindly opening the doors of your studio for you to call it trash for a fun intro. Seems youre the one not liking the fun comments about samples... ;)
lol stop it!
The video title is grammatically incorrect.
Nuh uh
you need more cowbells
True. I’d also love a few tiny tambourines
Need less time spent on tech, more time spent on songwriting.
I'm an engineer, not a songwriter..
clean clothes. no. drum storage. yes.
all these yourtube producers are just constantly drowning in gear all the time. You almost never see a cool technique or trick, just a list of expensive gear. It always looks like a Guitar Center showroom in their studios. There are never wine stains on the rug, or loose spring reverb tanks scattered about, or cables being soldered in the corner... not sure I could get anything done in these studios.
Because these are mainly just Sweetwater "remote UA-cam advertising showrooms", far more than they are studios - imagine if he'd actually have to PAY for all that gear, at the price any ordinary Joe gets, with the provents from music actually made in that home studio... Pretty certain there would be a LOT less gear.
🤷🏼♂️
Is it cool to watch?
Yes, sometimes and in some aspects.
Are there some useful tips being given?
Sometimes yes.
Is it Promote-Like-A-Pro over & over again?
Most definitely so.
Totally. When I was working as an engineer only, I couldn’t afford all of this gear. Even working with a-list artists on Grammy winning records. It’s brutal for guys that only do one thing. Once I started running a business and not just doing session gigs everything started to actually grow.
The business here is to make videos that other people want to watch; and with that being said I’m super grateful you guys stopped by.
Holy jump cut. I can’t watch it homie. I feel like I’m spazzing out. There’s like 4 jumps per sentence. Sucks cause I’ve been missing some content from you.
Sorry. Not trying to be mean.
We are training a new editor, that’ll happen as they learn.
Isn’t it called a side car?
I like side piece..
It's rude to say you went to Trash Studio. They open their homes and room to you and share their setup with you.
I'm kidding, don't take this stuff so seriously. Also, yes I can be rude. I remember you telling me to stop making videos like these because you only subscribed to watch tours. How come you still watch these videos you told me to stop making?
26 minutes of "look what analog gear i got" good for you congrats but i dont see any valuable tip for people that really want to learn new ideas....
Sorry that’s how you see it. None of this is about the analog gear. It’s about workflow, setup hacks, and efficiency. And yeah most of the 150 studios I’ve been to, use a lot of analog gear. Hence why I stole a lot of ideas for my studio and share them here.
Nugget
Lots of nugs
damn you look like a rich man xD
also can i get a job? no joke
Who's were trash lmao
My own lol
