    Looking back at our recent Bangkok Weekend Market video, we snuck in some quick video of a mammal that many of you couldn't recognize. With so many questions in the comment section, we decided to take it upon ourselves to take a deep dive for you all. These Bamboo Rats were bred in China, Vietnam and Laos for food...but in Thailand they became popular as pets. We don't believe these are in the pet trade in the USA so they are something new. This particular farm is in Sakon Nakhon, Thailand and if you would like to get in touch with them, please contact Khao Suay Bamboo Rat Farm via the Line app @ ID line 0860125229. Thanks for watching!!!

    Oh my gosh! I loved ❤this. Those Bamboo Rats are just adorable. I spent some time after watching g this researching more about them! They spend a lot of time borrowed underground so besides not being able to chew out, those concrete containment areas likely make them feel secure as well. They do usually tunnel though so not sure how they don’t tunnels out.

    • @DMExotics
      @DMExotics  7 місяців тому

      I am pretty sure those concrete cylinders have a bottom. They aren't made specifically for those animals, they were just something that worked. Open bottom are typically sold to grow plants and are filled with soil. Closed bottom can be wash basins or hold fish. Those should be closed bottom below and then one open bottom stacked above. I agree that they probably feel somewhat secure and would maybe like something even tighter. Lots of wide ranging comments on this one, food bowls full of "sand", lack of water, sad conditions, etc, etc. I am no expert but I can tell you it was clean, had no odor and those animals were all fat and pretty content. Now don't ask me about some mouse and rat breeders I have been to in the USA, well now that is on a whole other level. You ever been told, "sorry, no rodents this week...had one chew through the gravity fed water line and they all drowned in their bins". I have heard this many times over.

    Dan I love the channel. I know you’re weren’t happy a while back but keep on makin your vids. It’s great to see the different cultural surroundings and different reptiles. So it’s like a double delight. But I will mention to you that your channel was unsubscribed this mornin. And I did not do that so thank you UA-cam!!! Also I’ve noticed a lot of my channels notifications have been switched to “personal”. I didn’t do that either!!! So you may mention that to your peeps!! You guys rock, keep up the killer work!! Oh and I think it’s awesome that you rescue all snake, poisonous or not!! You’re a good soul!!!

      Thanks for the heads up on that but I cannot change it....this platform doesn't do a whole lot to help the small channels. It wouldn't surprise me if they also sub you to bigger channels without your doing lol. Glad you enjoy our content...we don't have plans to stop but it definitely is frustrating.

      Peninsular Malaysia It is a very unique place which connects the large part of SE Asia to the north and then connects in the south to Indonesia. Many animals have evolved to just be different in color and often times size(some species in Malaysia are larger). There are different climate zones as well. It has always been super interesting to me.

      In nature they live underground in holes so I am not sure if they would want giant cages. Probably a smaller diameter tube but longer and pitch black would be more preferable for them. Not sure, we have snakes lol. At least they were clean and didn't stink...I have seen a lot of rodent breeding situations in the USA that were actually sad.

    • @DMExotics
      @DMExotics  7 місяців тому +1

      @@sdqsdq6274 Yes, they were a very popular food animal in China and then during the pandemic when everybody was trying to put the blame on the source of covid, China banned those and other food animals. They absolutely are still eating them, Vietnam and Laos also. Somehow when they came to Thailand, they became popular pets and not food. Buried alive seems a weird decision as they live underground....maybe it looked good on video but the animals probably were happier being underground.

      There is a pipe running on the floor outside and each enclosure has a nipple inside providing water. Similar to the way my rat rack is set up for watering multiple cages.

    • @DMExotics
      @DMExotics  7 місяців тому

      Yes, exactly about the water. Another breeder told us that if you give them too much water they will die. In nature they live underground apparently. Think about rodent breeders in the US? Not sure those conditions are too amazing…except they smell horrible.

    • @DMExotics
      @DMExotics  7 місяців тому

      Oh, I missed “bowls of sand” lol. These rodents gnaw their food so that is actually bamboo dust that is the by-product of them gnawing and eating. It can be itchy on human skin if ingested or gets on your skin. Just wait for my new video, “I brought a bamboo rat to PetSmart”.
