This is a fine example of the WBCT working with contractors, when needed, to carry out work outside the skillset/time constraints of the Wilts & Berks volunteers. We supplied the excavator, driver and banksmen for the construction of the carpenters workshop.
You all do an amazing job Dave, it was great to see the canal so busy with volunteers. I did a walk with the dog to lacock and back a few days later and there were lots of people out enjoying your fine work
I’ve done lots of work for the trust on the pub they own, always for free, this being an actual canal use building though is going to be great! I’ve managed to get them a free boiler as well which I’ll fit for them.
Fascinating update on the new workshop, for which you are doing the plumbing, if I heard you correctly. Great stuff. It all looks extremely impressive - well planned and quickly executed. How secure will the site be - with I assume some expensive equipment around?
The site now is fenced off. When it is built it will be secured as usual. Is not easy to get to so to actually break in and steal would be risky to take stuff away and the only route passes a farm with 24 hour monitored cctv. You have to go through a locked gate and the farmer gets pinged every time a vehicle goes through it
This is really going to look great when finished. With the dry dock along side it’s going to bring the canal to life👍 Is it the Wilts and Berks canal, that comes out into the Grand union at Cosgrove?
No the Wilts and Berks ran from Semington near to Melksham in Wiltshire to Abingdon in Oxford on the Thames. It then had a branch at swindon that ran to the Thames and Severn (cotswolds) near Latton. You are thinking of the Buckingham I’ve done videos on that, I’ll add some links
I hope due consideration has been given to mitigating or precluding potential vandalism, arsonists and theft; maybe consider enabling self-contained camper van facilities until moored boats afford yet another tier of security. That leaning oak tree looks to need a supportive buttress structure if it is not merely a video distortion.
They have a very active green team down there and trees are monitored so I think it’s ok. Security is always going to be a concern until it’s completely connected, they have had some graffiti on double bridge but thankfully as it’s a mile or so away from anywhere most kids don’t go down there

Nice to see that you’ve been given the opportunity to mix your trade and your passion for canals.

Thank you for the walking tour this date. Always informative to see and digest. See you on the next. Cheers Steve! 😊
Thanks for watching!
