I met Johnny Cash in 1973 when I was 8 years old. He shook my hand and June gave me a kiss on the cheek. I still have his autograph and it is one of my most prized possessions.
My uncle told me he met Johnny Cash at the Memphis airport one time. Said he was just sitting alone waiting for a plane. My uncle said he sat and talked to him for over an hour and he was a real down to earth fella. I always love when he tells that story.
What was epic was his last concert. He couldn't walk, he was almost blind, he was shaking and so hoarse that they wheeled in a camel's hump between songs for him to parch his thirst. Then they put a guitar in his hands, he said "Hello, I'm Johnny Cash" and he sang about six of the most emotional renditions of songs he's been playing for years.
Well, it wasn't really age either, he was 71. While 71 isn't exactly young people usually show signs of aging (frail, weakness) in their 80's. Johnny had allready gone through multiple surgeries, but to name two of them; a bypass operation for his stomach and another one for his jaw. The jaw never healed properly and a nerve-damage was causing him constant pain from there-on for which he was put on prescription drugs to relieve it. He was also mistakenly diagnosed with Shy-Drager Syndrome in 1993 when he fell into coma,, a diagnose which was later corrected as Autonomic Neuropathy, which Johnny himself claimed in a 2002 interview. He also had diabetes. I hear many people say Johnny died from a broken heart due to the sudden loss of his wife June, and while that probably is somewhat true it isn't the whole picture. Autonomic Neuropathy causes many different health-related problems and is most probably, alongside the diabetes, the real reason behind his passing. My personal belief is that he looked after his health, but when June passed away he just stopped caring, and it all rapidly declined leading up to his death.

Johnny said " When God forgive me, I figured I better do it too". This are great words of wisdom and encouragement. There is so much I have learned. The greatest lesson is I have to forgive myself also. John will always be my hero and he changed my life. Thank you John. Too bad that most Christians haven't read the bible and would know that it says when you go to heaven you will spend every second of your life in the church praying to Jesus and God for eternity not flying around
About a year or so after his passing I chanced upon a free concert at a local park here in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. I recognized the music as country western and to myself, " No way I'm listening to this." Yet something made me stop for a few moments and just listen. To my surprise the tears began to fall and was riveted to the spot. At the songs conclusion the woman singing introduced herself as the daughter of Johnny Cash, and the song she was singing was about her father.
Dr: Yeah. But not everyone goes to heaven, like Johnny did. Most of us just rot in the ground...which is better than going to hell. Don't take no PhD to figure that one, right?
Kurt Loder was so lucky to have gotten to do this interview. Not because it was Johnny's last, but because to reminisce about times with someone that legendary is priceless.
I was born just five days after this interview, I feel a strong connection with him, I started to learn guitar for him, when I play his last song, the Hurt’s cover, I feel like he’s with me, my voice breaks every time while singing it. I’m reading his biography by Steve Turner, I feel like I’m not alone, idk. Rest In Peace, legend ❤️
this brought tears to my eyes, i can only imagine how many people he's helped and inspired with his music me being one. i am 22 years old and it's hard to find anyone as humble and with such a powerful message now. he's singing up in heaven for sure.
What an interview. Can't believe this was the last interview and he would pass soon after. He was truly amazing. I do believe that he had a broken heart after losing June in May 2003. I chuckled when Johnny said the secret to a happy marriage is separate bathrooms. All joking aside, they loved and cared about each other and looked after each other. I love hearing him reminisce about his career and other memories. He was an original.
When June I'll never forget the look on Johnny's face at the funeral home during the visitation. I knew then he wouldn't last long. They were so close. He truly did die of a broken heart. My great-grandparents did the same, dying two weeks apart. Johnny was a very genteel man, always welcoming the relatives when they came in town at his house. Not once did he ever act like it was a bother for people to come and say hello. I was fortunate, I knew Johnny all my life, from the time I was a wee girl. Unfortunately he personally never made it to the family reunions, but one of his daughters and grandchildren did. Great memories! I will never forget you Johnny and June! Sending you much love across the Galaxy.
Amanda P. That's how a lot of older people are. My great grandparents were that way. Grandpa had his bathroom with a shower, grandma had her bathroom with a bathtub.
Everyone knew that when June died that he would follow very soon after which came four months later. So glad I'm part of the generation that grew up and lived with his music. There are people here in Arkansas that knew and remembered him well. Johnny was always a people person regardless of their status.
Servant Yet A Friend did you not hear in the video that he said GOD forgives him so he figured he should forgive himself. That's disgusting for you to say he's in hell
It was 1963 ish and the tv was on and announced" Mr"Johnny Cash " . Out he comes singing a song keeping time with 2 pieces of steel . I was only 3 years old but I was awestruck by this Awsome man. Followed him all my life . He had a great deal of influence on my music and he was kind of a father figure to me as I had lost mine at 5yrs. When he died it effected me as if someone In the family had passed. I really miss him. Still singing his songs.
My dad introduced me to Johnny Cash when I was about 5. I was obsessed by the end of the first verse. I wish I could have met him...and I'd have loved to let him know kids and teens are still discovering and loving him
He was a drug addict and from what I have seen, he did not live a wholesome life as far as women are concerned. I would be very leary to name anyone just because of like or dislike, but character is the key.
Yes, at one point he WAS drug addict, but he got clean&had the love of his life marry him - AFTER he proved himself to her...we ALL fall short, he learned from his mistakes&became a better man for it!! That is all..
Such class, even in such a pitiful time for him. He didn’t have to do that interview. He didn’t have to be so candid and upbeat even. That’s a trooper.
So sad that Johnny is gone. There are three singers who go beyond being legends. They are Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Tony Bennett. Singers like these come only once in a lifetime. If there was a Mt. Rushmore for singers, these three would be on it.
You can believe the show or not but Ghost Adventures investigating Jonny Cash's house will always be rather emotional, catching his voice and all. I can't say I was ever a big fan of his but he certainly and clearly is a legend, gone or not.
To answer your question, crazy weird kid (haha), I went and checked and there's only the one clip where they believe they captured his voice. It's still pretty interesting. :)
I love Johnny Cash! What a shame his wife and he died. But hopefully, they're together in eternal happiness! Because they make me happy with their music!

Oh man! I wish he would have given Johnny Cash an open question. I really wanted to hear him speak freely. I bet he had a life story to tell. And we missed it. So sad that's in heaven now. His music will love on forever... It's just so depressing that we lost an absolute legend 😪
Johnny passed three weeks after this video. His physical body failed him, as will ours someday. However, your soul will live in eternity. Take a cue from Mr. Cash and get your heart right. Simply kneel at the Cross, believe, and repent. Please don't wait.
This guy died when I was three. I remember running around and singing ring of fire on the Fourth of July while making circles with sparklers. I knew who he was and i knew he had died. Back then I didn't think too much about it I was practically a baby still. Now when I look back. A lot of my best memories back then were singin his songs around a camp fire. I wish he was still here. His music effects me even still today. In an era where music is basically brain dead traditional country and rock n' roll sooth a troubled soul. When I listen to his songs I get misty eyed Johnny will always have a place in the hearts of the broken and the heroic. God bless.
had the good fortune of seeing him and June perform several times. my greatest memory is cruising with my dad in his old truck blasting Johnny Cash on the 8 track singing along with all the songs.
It breaks my heart to see John in this condition. He's so sick...still he did those great recordings almost on his dying bed. And, yes... Along with his illnesses a broken heart from losing June "killed" him. He gave up...without June he felt he had nothing more to live for. Rest in peace where ever you are, John.

Johnny said " When God forgive me, I figured I better do it too". This are great words of wisdom and encouragement. There is so much I have learned. The greatest lesson is I have to forgive myself also. John will always be my hero and he changed my life. Thank you John. I do know it is too late for me to thank you in person but someday I will meet you and my Mum and my grandmother

Too bad the only way to get to heaven Is Jesus!

That was heavy. What a man. God bless you Johnny Cash.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the real deal.
Even until the end he was singing and making hits, not many artists can do that....LEGEND
I love that, separate bathrooms, he is probably very right about that one.
Yup!
Amanda P. That's how a lot of older people are. My great grandparents were that way. Grandpa had his bathroom with a shower, grandma had her bathroom with a bathtub.
It made a huge difference even before I ever heard of anyone doing it
My grandparents lasted till my grandmother passed, 53 years. They had separate bathrooms the last 30.
why
Everyone knew that when June died that he would follow very soon after which came four months later. So glad I'm part of the generation that grew up and lived with his music. There are people here in Arkansas that knew and remembered him well. Johnny was always a people person regardless of their status.
I spent hours at his and June’s grave today, I was the only one there, it was eerie!! #RIP #Cash

So sad that Johnny is gone. There are three singers who go beyond being legends. They are Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Tony Bennett. Singers like these come only once in a lifetime. If there was a Mt. Rushmore for singers, these three would be on it.

My dad just passed away. He really love Johnny Cash music. Great Men. I miss my dad.
God bless.

71 years old? Wow -- he lived hard.
It breaks my heart to see John in this condition. He's so sick...still he did those great recordings almost on his dying bed.
And, yes... Along with his illnesses a broken heart from losing June "killed" him. He gave up...without June he felt he had nothing more to live for.
