I don't think a drum solo has ever made me cry with joy before. One of my most favourites of his. There's so much life in this! What a great job with the transcription, man! Kudos!
Natty not great haha it's going really slow but I'm not going to give up I'm in love with this solo and I'm not going to let my brain or my hands get in the way of my future! 👍
WOW! I don't know how I haven't come across your channel yet! This is outstanding and remarkable! Great work with the transcription of this epic drum solo! Thank you so much for creating this!!
Tony transcribed two songs for me, and then I just had to hire him to play them !!!! Working with a transcript AND watching it…great way to learn Tony is a true professional, always easy to contact, and humble But I still can’t believe he did THIS Tony, would you play it ?
Hey Patrick! Thank you so much for the words of support - you are very kind! 😊 It was a lot of fun doing those transcriptions and recordings for you and I'm glad they were helpful. I would certainly give this transcription a go, but it would take me a LOT of practise to get anywhere near Larnell’s level.
Really appreciate your work!!! I've learned so many from your music and transcriptions. Can you do more Larnell Lewis solo transcription? Thanks a lot!!!
Hey thanks for the transcription, it very helps ! But i've been working through to play it, and after listening carefully i've noticed a little mistake at bar 14 about the rythm. Here's what larnell really plays on that bar : - two first triplet on BEAT 1 - two half note (swing) on BEAT 2 - one half note on the "and" of BEAT 3 - BEAT 4 & 5 are ok On your part, it's like it's shifted by one triplet, if that makes sense for you. Tell me if this is correct! Thanks :)
Hey DrumZy! Good luck learning the transcription - it’s definitely a challenge! By bar 14, I assume you mean as per the score on my website? So the phrase starting at 0:35 ? I’ve checked this and, as far as I can tell, what I have transcribed is correct. Larnell definitely starts on the upbeat (triplet feel) and outlines a rhythm matching the afro-cuban bell pattern, which is very familiar to me, so hard to mistake. Like anybody, I do make mistakes though, so do let me know if you spot anything else as you learn the solo 😊
@@DailyChops Hey ! At 0:35 everything is fine, there's no mistake. The phrasing i'm talking about is at 0:57 (when he plays 4 buzzs in a row) . It corresponds to the bar 14 on your pdf, assuming 1 bar equals a 11/4 time signature. Do you see it ? By the way, i wonder how much time did it take you to transcribe the whole solo ? I guess you saved me a big amount of time :)!
Hey@@Tomariokart, ahh, ok I see what you mean. Yes, it’s certainly open to interpretation - as Larnell is playing quite loosely (i.e. with feeling 😊) it’s difficult to tell if that first buzz stroke of the quarter-note triplet is intended to land on the first beat of the bar. So, yes, the quarter-note triplet at the end of bar 13 could be two dotted quavers, with the buzz stroke landing on the next down beat, and continuing as you suggest. The solo took me about two days to transcribe. I’m really glad you like it and would love to see a video of you playing the transcription 😊
Beware of the aliens! I somehow missed this one. Tony, you're great! Would love to see the process of how you write this stuff out, and how long it takes - would be awesome. My guess is (and the way I do it whenever I take songs) you put an excerpt to a repeat mode and write the stuff down, right? Anyway, it's beyond me at this scale and with such performance level. How long did it take you to just get the first raw notation out of it?
Thank you Alex! You're right - I tend to transcribe small sections at a time. The size of the sections depends on how complicated the music is. This could be four bars or four notes. I play the section through and on each pass add more detail to the notation, with a final pass of the whole phrase to check the accuracy. I think this one took me a couple of days to write out the notes.

The transcription is as impressive as the solo itself! Well done! This is not an easy task to transcribe this.
Thank you! 😊
