Finally back with another transcript vid! This episode features Larnell Lewis, drummer for Snarky Puppy and many others, blazing through this track "Change Your Mind" from his new solo album, which is absolutely killer!
This was probably the most challenging transcript vid i've put out in recent times! His phrasing and touch behind the kit is just unreal, so i wanted to make sure that I written out everything as accurately as possible, including ghost notes, pedal hats and of course the insane solo towards the end which features some over-the-bar line fills which are also unreal haha!

I can't get over how good the groove at 3:36 is. The kick phrase ends on 1, but 1 never feels like a "downbeat" and the beatbeat on 2 starting the phrase over again gets all the emphasis. I know it's not really a big deal, but it's still kinda blowing my mind how well they pulled that off. Veeeery tiny tweak in dynamics or arrangement and it's a very different feel.

This is an incredible transcription, however, the song is fully in 4/4, and there is no bar of 5/4 anywhere. I heard Larnell talk about this once, and he insisted the whole song is in 4. When you count it out, it makes sense:
The drum solo section is a 4 bar loop, where there are 2 bars of empty space for him to solo, followed by 2 bars with shots to catch, the first shot being on 2, and the second shot being on the 'a' of 1.
To make that more concrete, count this out, but each X is a shot:
1 e + a 2 e + a 3 e + a 4 e + a
1 e + a 2 e + a 3 e + a 4 e + a
1 e + a X e + a 3 e + a 4 e + a
1 e + X 2 e + a 3 e + a 4 e + a

Great transcription. I got stuck at 3:08 on the second bar because there is an extra floor tom. the snare should be on the three.

@@AlexBlackDrums the beginning of the solo break at 146 is really 2 bars of 4 and not one bar of 4 and one of 5.
The entire section is just 4/4. The solo shots are :beat 2 and ah of 1.
It's a really tricky phrase to solo over for sure!! That's what makes this 10000x harder. He's such a great manipulator of time
