Hey everyone, it's Charlene here, and today I'm diving into something truly unique with Jinjer's "Pisces." If you haven't heard this one yet, brace yourselves - it's a wild ride from start to finish.
From the first note, Jinjer sets a hauntingly beautiful tone. The smooth, melodic intro pulled me in instantly, but what really caught me off guard was the sheer intensity that followed. The transition from calm to chaos is nothing short of jaw-dropping.

Welcome to Jinjer. That's all her. Perennial live at Wacken shows her talent well.

She actually screams like this. There are some extra backing layers added to this live recording, but it is all her vocals. For a song with just singing Bad Water official live video would be the best choice. They only have a couple others and those are intro/outro songs from the same album as this.
Harsh vocals can be an acquired taste for many people, but once you 'get it' they add another layer of emotion and expression to music that nothing else really does.

I have been a Jinjer fan for 6 years now. I was never a fan of harsh vocals, aka growling, until I started listening to Jinjer. Every Jinjer song is different and somewhat like a thrill ride when you hear for the first time. This is a band that does it's best work live. The Jinjer song "Beggers Dance" is an example of a totally jazz Jinjer song. Also, the song "Just Another" which is Jazz metal. Tatiana is the bands front person and has one of the best voice ranges in metal today.

At the point this was recorded Tatiana was 30 and had been practicing growling vocals since was 15. Her growls grow on one. Tati has a real talent for delving into deeply human stuff in her lyrics and pulling out genuine nuggets of wisdom and extreme realness. The growls are just a tool to dramatize that the stuff she's talking about is rough. But at the same time she doesn't rely on the technique to express her intent but expresses herself through it.

Welcome to Jinjer. That is all Tatiana; she is a vocal goddess. The band is a collection of amazing musicians. For less harsh vocals I would suggest "I speak Astronomy" (OMV), Wallflowers (OMV) and "Bad Water" (Official Live version). for a great live performance that showcases all her talents, I recommend "Perennial" live at Wacken 2019. Good honest reaction. (subbed)

You have so much to hear and see! Perennial live at Wacken, Judgement and Punishment one take vocal,
I think you’d love their song Wallflower. Also Bad Water is all clean sung vocals.

The Jinjer song “Bad Water” has no harsh vocals, but it’s not really typical of what the band does. “Wallflower” is one of their more approachable songs and only has as bit of harsh vocals near the end.

She uses her growling voice everywhere but in some songs she does it less often. If you want melody and space then listen JINJER - I Speak Astronomy (Official Video) | Napalm Records.

    Great video also.

Haha Been along for the ride since your beginning since im a big Floor Jansen fan and glad you got to meet Jinjer from Donetsk Ukraine. They are quite proggy (progressive) with their musical compisitions combined with Tatianas beautiful cleans and her powerful primal vocals. Its usually a 50/50 mix. They are alot to take in so reactions like yours are pretty common..lol You just don't hear music like this in the US. Because of the war the bands HQ is in Warsaw Poland where Tatiana is currently recording the vocals for the bands 5th album. Previous HQ was Kyiv the capitol. The guys live in Bulgaria and Poland now and Tati with her American husband Alex in Los Angeles. They are pretty heavy but since they are so knowledgable they know how to build a good melody. If you want to see a wide variety of her skills try Perrenial live at Wacken 2019. Or Wallflower OMV from their last studio release called.... Wallflowers in 2021.

    Welcome to the Jinjer Family!
One of the best rabbit holes to go down.
Bad Water Live is just her without the harsh vocals
But Jidgement & Punishment One Take Vocal Performance or Perennial Live at Wacken 2019 are great next stops.
    Cheers!

🔥Welcome to Jinjer, Charlene! I just found your channel, saw your Jinjer reaction and subbed, great reaction! It's always fun seeing reactions of people new to Jinjer and no worries if you ultimately decide the growling just isn't for you! Thank you for bringing the fantastic genre twisting music of Jinjer to more people! I love their energy, how tight they are, how down to earth they are, the heaviness mixed with complexity and groove, beautiful singing and growling and especially Tatiana's lyrics!
The first time I heard Pisces in 2019, I hadn't liked any metal with growling and it took me a few listens to start liking it, but now Tatiana is my favorite vocalist and Jinjer my favorite band (Pisces has been my wake up alarm for a few years and I still love it more every time I hear it, snooze is a thing of the past).
TLDR: skip to the last paragraph 😂
Sorry for the long comment, I just love Jinjer too much and love seeing people discover (and usually fall in love with) them and each of their songs!
My three favorite comments about Jinjer that I've seen, "terrifying levels of talent", "I hate it when a Jinjer song ends", and a mother quoting her four year old wanting to see the "lion lady" again 🤣
All four current members of Jinjer have essentially no formal musical training except Vlad the drummer who studied classical piano. For most of their songs, the three guys write most of the instrument music, then Tatiana writes most of the lyrics and melodies (she gets tons of well deserved credit for her vocal and stage performance abilities, but maybe not quite enough for her lyrical and musical composition abilities). Roman the guitarist has written a lot of the instrument music in the past, so he's a huge part of the beautiful sound of Jinjer, but Vlad the drummer (who also plays guitar and classical piano, but so far not in most Jinjer songs - I think he played piano in lainnereP) has been writing more of it and wrote nine of the eleven songs for the latest album Wallflowers (and the next album is over 80% done). Eugene composes some - he wrote the instrument music for one song on Wallflowers and a few songs on other albums, and I know that apart from his amazing work on the bass, he adds riffs and has written lyrics for a few Jinjer songs.
Jinjer has been a tour-heavy band, touring almost nonstop from 2013 to 2020 and much of the time since then (with interruptions by covid and the US backed coup/proxy war), hard work that has made them fantastic live performers. The band (all members have been Ukrainian, with Russian their first language) started in eastern Ukraine (Donetsk) in 2008 as a group of three (then five) with none of the current members (they consider the official start of the band when Tatiana replaced the male vocalist and Roman joined as lead guitar 2009/2010), Vlad is the fifth drummer (joined in 2016) and it's been a group of four since 2015 (though they consider their road sound engineer Sasha to be a fifth member). I think they're still friends with all the former members and you can see their former guitarist turned actor, Dmitry Oksen, in older videos on guitar and a more recent video (Disclosure) playing an interrogator.
One of the things I love most about Jinjer is the messages in Tatiana's lyrics and the way she combines growling and beautiful singing with Jinjer's fantastic instrumentals to be so powerful for expressing the anger and pain in those messages: the anti-war message in Home Back, the anti-greed in On The Top, Mediator and No Hoard Of Value (also the horror of the coal mining industry in their home Ukraine), the protest song Who Is Gonna Be The One, the anti-fascism of Sit Stay Roll Over, the anger at people being narrow minded in Teacher Teacher and Judgment & Punishment, the struggles with mental health in Pit Of Consciousness, Vortex, Wallflower and Perennial, the giving voice to mother nature angry at humanity for letting capitalism destroy her in a bunch of songs like Ape, The Prophecy, Cloud Factory, Noah, Outlander and Bad Water. Other favorites are I Speak Astronomy, Retrospection, Words of Wisdom, Just Another, Captain Clock, Scissors, Exposed As A Liar, I Want It I'll Get It, A Plus Or A Minus, Dip A Sail, When Two Empires Collide, lainnereP, Prologue and Beggar's Dance (those last two are short album bookends that could do well together in one reaction if you're so inclined).
I haven't found a Jinjer song I don't love, so I think you can't go wrong if you choose any of them, but a few good choices might be Perennial (official and/or live at Wacken 2019, both are must-see), Teacher Teacher (official is the studio audio with some great footage from several shows), Judgement & Punishment (official and/or Tatiana's one take performance, again both must-see), Pit of Consciousness (official and/or live in Kiev/Kyiv, a third where both are absolutely must-see) or the heartwrenching plea against war in Home Back (official video).
Thank you, Charlene! I hope you'll keep trying out more Jinjer songs and enjoy! ❤🖤🤘

Tatiana Shmayluk (Tati) is able to sing like an angel and scream like a demon because she has total control of her false vocal chords (or folds). She her deep growl is all hers. Ironically, there was some minor effects used on her clear voice. A little doubling here and there, and some slight echo in places. But no effects on her growl, that is all her!!! I'm 60 and I had the pleasure of seeing them open for Disturbed with my 20 year old son.

There's a few of us out there that simply live for these reactions! Watching someone's brain literally glitch when a female singer does gutturals is almost my favorite pastime. It helps to not think of guttural vocals as "demonic" and instead think of them as using different muscles in the throat to sing without phonation. It takes a great deal of practice to not only do it well but do it in a way that doesn't damage the vocal cords. Fortunately, a great way to come around to harsh vocals when they don't quite fit the pallet, is to listen to as much different music with harsh vocals as you can. You'll discover what you like, and what you don't like and let me just say that no one likes all metal music. I'm not a huge fan of djent or deathcore, but thanks to Slaughter to Prevail, I'm coming around to it. Enjoy the rabbit hole for the channel, your subscriber count will thank you for it! :)

Personally, Jinjer and specifically this video was what finally opened my mind to growls/screams. I'd been exposed to it periodically for years (I take part in a game where we listen to and rate songs, and one of the participants is a metal-head), but prior to hearing this, I had not really liked any fry screams (I think that's the proper name for the style) that I'd heard. When Tatjana does it though, I could actually pick up some of the lyrics, even before looking them up - she enunciates surprisingly well, considering the technique used (using false vocal cords). And it helped that I liked the music instrumentally very much.
Now I'm more open to this style of singing, though I am still quite picky about what I like and what I don't, and most of the fry screams and growls in metal go into the "not for me" pile.
I think it takes some getting used to adjust to the style - initially it's just such a shock to the system that it can sound like just noise.

If you want a really deep, wide and surprising rabbit hole for the reaction channel, you could check out more of the Japanese women rock / metal / punk scene, beyond Band-Maid. Lots of great stuff that generates great reactions, has plenty of the unexpected just like this, and tends to pull the bands respective fan bases to the channel as well.

I never cared for this kind of singing, or growling. However this vocaliste and this band....... This little miracle of a band changed my perception. Maybe the trick is the very high quality each member brings to the table. A lot of people find this song Pisces one of their weakest, but I think its the pearl in their crown, with its beautiful arrangements, musicality, lyrics ........ I think its one of their best.

Totally cool to not like harsh vocals. We like what we like! But I will step on the notion that harsh vocals are "demonic". It's just another way to express emotion. And sometime emotion can be aggressive. There's plenty of Cristian bands out there who's entire discography is praising God but they use this style of vocals. Flyleaf for example.
