I’ll be honest, I bought into the 4k hype for my youtube channel. But from the first video I made with my new camera, I realized that the lighting still sucked, the audio still sucked and the colors were still off. It took another 6 months experimenting with lighting and positioning the mic to really get the quality I was looking for. Lesson learned; shooting in 4k isn’t going to solve any of your video problems, it’s just going to make them higher resolution. For anyone who genuinely wants to up their production quality, examine your current lighting and audio first. It’s a lot cheaper (though admittedly less exciting) than buying a new camera.

It's just the same with 4K as it was with HD. I can still remember everything digging into FHD when it was new, only to find out their computer was hardly able to process the data, their disks ran out of space in no-time and exporting took ages. 'But HD...'
I always tried to get people to see that most video's on the internet are hardly worth a look at and more pixels won't change that. Until June 2017 or so, I used a 4:3 PAL videocamera. Yes, that was 720x576, but it was sufficient for me and I never pretended to be such a good video-idiot ;)
Since June 2017, I made the step into the Full HD era and it's something I still have to get used to: if it isn't for the fact my footage is now recorded on far more convenient SD-cards (where the camera before that used miniDV tape), it is for the increased resolution: if I take a shot from a sign or so, I tend to zoom so much that I can clearly read the sign in the viewfinder (Which is not a full HD viewfinder, but only has 450.000 pixels or so).
In reality, the sign can be read from great distance when viewed on a FHD computer screen.
So far, FHD is good enough for me and with the amount of control I like over the camera (rings that mechanically alter focus, zoom and iris), 4K is also too expensive for me.
Pair it with a computer that nearly dies when I edit 4K (I did it once to show a map with a route being drawn on it while moving a FHD-frame over the 4K footage to show where the route was going) and you understand why I also won't be switching ;)

Good lighting and audio is more expensive then any little camera that i can think of! But you are right in one thing that 4k maybe will not solve much problems for you guys that do small UA-cam videos, but it does give you so much flexibility at very cheap price and it is going to save your butt if you are actually making living from making videos! And guys please stop advocate for 1080p anymore! It is 2019 and 90 % TVs sold in past 4 years been 4k. And even those who does not have 4k TV or monitor are going to benefit in many ways of 4k resolution! My 2 year old Asus that costed me 300$ new can edit 4k and it is very low end notebook with i3 processor and no dedicated GPU!

I've been using HD 1080p for basic interview sets or any recordings that require longer recording times because its easier to render the video files in post. In regards to 4k, I'll use it for more of a action, or fast paced type of video but will record only up to 10-15 secs for each clip to help with rendering. So far it has worked for me. But I can honestly say I have been shooting more HD lately. Great video bro!

Great video. one note, if your paying that much for hard disk space you need to shop around. I picked up all my western digital 5tb drives 2 years ago for less than $120/drive. and actually final price was cheaper than that. picked up the external enclosures with 5tb drives. got 6 of them. raided them in stripe to make one massive 30 tb array, that pushes a actual throughout of 700megabytes per second (amazing for editing). here's the catch. installed all those drives internally. then took the enclosures and listed the empty enclosures one by one on eBay starting bid at $6. each enclosure sold for about $70!!! so each $120 drive minus 70 = $50/drive..... so 30tb of storage $300. brand new western digital. no special deals for the $120. walmarts regular price at the time. CHEERS!

KmanAuto I agree. I don’t worry too much about disk space. Same reason I find most of this cloud business is useless for saving space. It is helpful for moving things around or looking at a certain library of music or video etc. But I wouldn’t spend a whole lotta money buying cloud space. When Hard drives are soooo cheap as you have shown.

@@LUTYTV and that's why you have a backup (presumably in a 3-2-1 system: You have 3 different destinations where the same file resides, on 2 different media, one of them in another location/always with you.
You can even take it one step further by having one of those backups 'tailing' the other: should a back-up get infected by something, you can always revert to your last backup.
My back-up strategy is not the best (one big drive with everything I also have on the disks in my computer, always on top of the computer) but at least I have a backup and not a 'backup' (read: 'Please help me! My back-up disk crashed and now I lost everything!' 'Well, buy a new one and make a new backup?' 'You don't get it! My back-up disk contained everything I don't have on my computer!' 'Ah... so it's not a backup then...' '........' )
If you buy space at Google, I can think you can be sure they will have reduncancy in place. But I will never ever trust my files to Google for that sort of things. My files are my files, and they don't have anything to do with that. It also won't be the first time a big commercial company changes it's terms and conditions overnight and removes everything, or makes it invisible as long as you don't pay more.

A sensible review. My latest camera is a Sony FDR AX700 and by using the HLG settings I get 1080@60 that looks very good. Very careful post sharpening bridges some the gap to 4k but at 1080 size. The main difference after careful post work is in the texture, 4k with its higher resolution shows fine texture detail better and that effects some outdoor shots where you see the detail in trees and similar. As far as future proofing with 4k, I don't believe it matters as 4k@60 is available now and the sensors and memory cards will only get better. Thanks for the review.

Most people thru no fault of their own believe that a brighter more vibrant image automatically means it was shot in a higher resolution. For me and my outdoor videos... 1080p does the job for now.

This largely depends on what kind of look the person is going for, for instance, most cinematic videos are done in 24fps, while some vloggers might use 30fps and high action sports might use 60fps. The frame-rate can actually contribute to the overall experience of the video and if the 4K footage is more of a nature cinematic set of clips, then 24-25fps can help aid to that experience.

I purchased a custom made desktop with the highest level i7 CPU ( at the time) and an NVidia GPU and up'd the RAM to 32 GB. I have at least 10 TB worth of external HDs. BUT, I find I still primarily shoot in HD and post my recent footage to UA-cam In HD. Its the processing time and the amount of storage that has kept me from shooting more. The local computer shop has offered to get me external RAID storage. I may have to go in that direction. Spring 2017 events are coming up and I may chose to add more 4K but the quality of HD still produces good editable/viewable footage.

A Proxy is a low res lesser quality version of your footage, that's in a codec your computer can decipher more easily. So when you import footage into Premiere Pro if that's what you're using, you can choose to create proxies of your files so that you edit lowres files. Then when it comes time to export, you just switch out the lowres files for your original footage. Bam! It's great if your computer struggles with 4K or even 1080p H.264 footage.

I'd rather have a well composed video from good editing work with smooth previewing for increased editing accuracy than a sharper looking less perfected video composition due to limited or nearly nonexistent video previewing.

    Hi Ed
I was having the same problem, the more cuts and edits I made the slower the video would get. Adding sound created more slowness and then slow mo or speeding up created even more stuttering and jerkiness during editing. I had good hardware but the 4K was slow as crap on Premiere Pro. As someone else mentioned I found the solution which is the Proxy option. It eliminates all the problems. Yes the computer takes a bit of time at the start to make the lower res proxy files but after that you can edit with the low res 1080P clones and they play the video smoothly. The final product is made using the original 4K footage so it looks the same when your finished. You can toggle between the two while working if you ever need to.
Check out this video. A guy named Svavar and Robbyg on Mavicpilots bought the solution to my attention.

Good to hear something sensible in this area, well shot and carefully post produced 1080 looks very close to 4k, the main difference if you use a large enough monitor is in the texture when you shoot UHD 4k. 2.5/2.7k can be shot at 60 frames which really improves horizontal panning where 24, 25 and 30 frame are hard to get good results unless you pan very slowly.

There is also another input to take into account when deciding to shoot 1080 or 4K: the max framerate. Most drones allow only 24-25 or 30 fps, whixh, I believe, results in really jerky footage, unless you are shooting landscape while moving slowly. 50 fps allows you to shoot moving scenes really smoothly. Another hint if you want to reduce jerks is to use and ND filter in order to allow longer exposure (1/50 second)

Sometimes the stuttering is caused by the video codec. Computers have a hard time decompressing the video as you scrub or play it. A good way to test if this is the case would be to convert the video to a lossless compression format and then edit with it. (the hugest downside to this is the size of the video files, but you will usually find they scrub and play really nicely).

True, more and more people watch content on their phones, and 4k doesn't matter when it's that close.

    • @NexusNine
      @NexusNine 2 роки тому +1

@@EdRickerVlogs yes, there is that, but even the industry hasn't really pushed entirely for the adoption of 4k filming. While big-budget blockbuster films have moved to filming in 4k and 8k, the indie scene still very much embraces 1080p and 2k. Television, especially broadcast television, still leans heavily towards 1080p, with animation, especially Anime, still favoring 720p. Live sports still opt for 1080p as well, largely because 1080p cameras still have better bit rates at more affordable costs.
My working theory falls into two categories. One is that the adoption of HD as the standard is still actually really young, only really being THE standard for a little over a decade, and even less with television. People already put a lot of time, money, and effort into updating to HD. It's too soon to ask the mass population to adopt yet a new standard after JUST making a commitment to HD.
And this flows into my second point -- people just don't care. The average consumer still supports standard definition. DVD sales made up over 70% of home video market sales last year. DVD provides what the average consumer considers video quality that's good enough. Some networks have opted to release their television shows on DVD but not Blu-Ray (look at The Orville). And to build on this, 1080p just looks good enough.
I find that freelancers and amateur filmmakers are the ones who care the most about whether 1080p is good enough or if they should shoot 4k. And I think that's because we think that's what a professional would do, use the best tech available. But that's not really the case, and we're all kind of overthinking it.

It really depends on what I'm shooting and what I'm shooting with. I'm I'm on a commercial I tend to shoot 8k on either a red or an alexa. If it's just a personal project I tend to shoot in uhd on a sony or gh5. Documentaries I tend to film uhd on a c300. It's all down to personal preference really and what your filming for. Most companies now prefer shooting hdr instead of 4k as it keeps the nice detail but is easier to edit.

Well said. It’s about a year on since I started shooting in 4K (or actually UHD) on a Lumix GH4. I’d resisted it for a while as I didn’t have any display that could use it, but I have one now. One of the difficulties with my camera in 4K mode is focus accuracy, particularly if the subject has fairly soft contrast. Almost essential to use ‘focus lock’ before shooting a clip, otherwise the odd frame can be out of focus, which undermines the idea of using 4k at all! No doubt more upmarket cameras can cope with it. At present, I upload 4k to my UA-cam channel, and downscale to HD for creating home made Blu Ray output.
While almost all new domestic displays are 4k, they are often too small/too far to be beneficial, and the other issue is the transmission speed needed to support it.

I'm the classic example of what you addressed in this video. Received the Mavic Pro as a gift from my awesome wife and I started shooting videos in 4K only to quickly realize that my current computer can't handle 4K at all...stuttering and crashing so much that I can't enjoy any of the raw footage, let alone do any editing.
So, now after watching your video, I will try the 2.7 and 1080 to see what works best with my current setup. Headed up to the Sierra's to do some skiing and will have lots of time to play around with the Mavic to test out different settings. Both have there place. I think people are used to bad 1080p like what UA-cam delivers and also alot of DSLR's. If you ever have used a good cinema camera, the 1080p out of it looks stunning, not far off from 4k at all surprisingly.
I used to shoot everything in 4k with my Panasonic G85 because of the bad 1080p, but since I have had my GH5s I have used the 1080p in a lot of projects because it looks great. Saved me a lot of time for smaller projects as well as I don't need proxies.
One thing I would note, if you are using 1080p is to upscale to 4k when delivering to youtube. As the compression is massive!

But not everyone has a fast Internet, and some of them without jerking only in 720p or max. 1080p, rather than in UHD 2160p, these films often do not look good or blurry. Other than those who still put in 720p or 1080p pure, such as the professional Lutz Dieckmann. The latter have, if filmed well, rather the better result.
