  • In this episode of ‘The Pulse’, our panel of industry experts discusses digital twins technology and where it will take our cities in the near (and far!) future. Fred Mills of The B1M is joined by Salla Eckhardt of Microsoft, Tim Johnson of Buildmedia, and David Weir-McCall of Epic Games to talk about how this emerging technology can achieve its ultimate goal of improving city residents’ quality of life, both now and decades into the future.

One of the best conversations around the multi-faceted subject of Digital Twins that I’ve seen for a long time!

Loved this discussion! We're having so many of the same conversations with our clients about the the definitions and use cases of digital twins. One thing's for sure, Unreal Engine is an incredible visualization platform. We always enjoy seeing our models in your content too! Keep up the great work

First of all, thank you for your great webinar.
I foresee that this technology is still in the stone age period and will develop much more in the next 10 years. I can even say that this progress is endless. I listened to you excitedly, thank you if you are all very valuable people.
With the developing architectural demands, the creation of digital twins in urbanization should be made a standard.

Playing a modded Cities Skylines or modded Sims4 is basically pre-training in starting a career as a digital twin urban planning/architecture consultant.

Great job guys. I hope to see more of this in the real world sonn - not in 20 years, but somewhere in the near future.
You gave really a good insight in the matter. Thank you!
It would really be gret if the "public data" all over the world would really become "public" and therefore usable by everybody.

For smaller companies / one person firms it would be great to be able to have just one software that can produce drawings and visualisations.

I just want a game based on a digital twin of the entire planet. Something like GTA, but built with unreal engine 5. All the NPCs could be based on photos from facebook...

This "tool" he talks about at the 3/4s was very much like the mostly defunct Google Earth project, the most successful bits of which were integrated into Google Maps. For all the effort and polishing that's gone into the creation of this, why would that application be more successful than Google Earth? Unreal engine is certainly "shinier" than Sketchup, but are you going to be able to collect enough data, especially on rural areas and very old buildings, without user contribution - or perhaps can't you call Google Earth and Sketchup an important predecessor to digital twinning in general? In fact why wasn't Google included or even mentioned in this video at all, is it because they are the major competitor to Microsoft's projects? Google Maps, for instance, already exists on the market, with simulated 3D of any street and live data streams of traffic, speed traps, store and location reviews, pedestrians in stores, even gas prices... It's more an augment to reality not an alternate to reality, but can you load anything more robust on a 4" screen over a satellite network anyway?

Or, since it seems the people in this video have strong ties to the UK, is it more of a "location monopoly" that's forming, where Google manages the users in the States and Microsoft manages the users in the UK? Is that ethical?

right now the current economic system, which is foundational to outcomes, is not set up for your ultimate goal to be realized. people talk about lofty goals but seldom really mean them. the public has been so evangelized with lofty sentiments and failed outcomes of fairness that anything put forward to address anything is a very hard sell. the trust environment is low. quality of life improvments, has up to current time, meant, only if you have the cash to pay for it will you live in that way. if you dont well your left in the financially harvested unconsidered side of the equation only. this massively un balanced economic system will prevent this vision from any kind of large scale realization except for those with large incomes in segregated communities. exactly the population that already has the least current problems. task one is re evaluating this frame work your limited by.
second cities and towns are strapped for money at least in the west. corporations are flushed with cash. for 50 years there has been a reluctance of the super wealthy to invest in their own countries and commonly held infrastructures. instead the wealthy have tried to isolate themselves in private enclaves letting the rest have less and less over time. this has been facilitated by their purchase of political power which they used to take money into themselves and away from public planning instead of invest in shared prosperity. thus resources at city and town level are currently extremely constrained artificially. this prevents any kind of broad planning and problem solving at large scale.
for now information is not just useful for problem solving its also power in society. so far all this power has been sequestered in large corporations and large govt entities which dont always have the average citizens interests in mind. in other words our current physical imbalances are reflected in how data is also used in society today as well. the few control the data of the many and the many have little control over their relationship to the data and how its used to shape their lives for better or worse. over the last decades this has only become more unbalanced. if these fairness road blocks are not dealt with you will not have the trust of people to go down this road or resources to do it or even a population of trained experts it will take to implement it in the first place.
the biggest challenges aren't technical but social and ethical. thats the foundation the society your talking about needs to function on. the fourth turning we are in with its chaos makes a de centralized approach probably the only workable way to do any of this. bottom up. but well see i guess. way i see it people want their startrek future but not the social and ethical work to get there...tech alone wont do it.
