  • Relax as I take what could be an 80-90 year old dip pen and introduce it to ink for the very first time. My son and daughter-in-law gave me this pen as a gift. It is a pen that was sold as a souvenir at a tourist attraction called Cave of the Winds, in Colorado. I believe it to be from the 1930's but cannot be certain. Perhaps it is newer, but then again I suppose it could be older...who knows. Headphones or ear-buds are recommended for this video.

    • ASMR Vintage Writing S...
    The pen is made from what appears to be brass and has a Mother of Pearl body. Also in the box was a nice hand-painted, Mother of Pearl letter opener. I must admit that I was surprised by not only how well the pen writes, but by the amount of line variation I was able to achieve. This video is not a review, but rather me simply enjoying a very thoughtful gift. For all of you eagle-eyed types, yes, I realize that I wrote a word or two twice, that was intentional because I wasn't happy with the first one, so no need to call me out on it. Out of habit, I also wrote "fountain pen" when I should have wrote "dip pen". No biggie, just relax and enjoy:)
    If you are wondering what I am writing at the time a massive drop of ink fell from the over-loaded pen, it was just some information I found on the internet about the Cave of the Winds attraction. I was going to read it after I wrote it, but due to the video taking an ugly turn, I decided on the fly to just post it here in the description. Enjoy:)
    Cave of the Winds info:
    Discovered in 1869 and opened to public tours in 1881, Cave of the Winds has been a place for visitors to explore the underground world for 130 years. But the history of the caves goes back even further -- it's millions of years old!
    Early legends of the Jicarilla Apaches, who migrated through the Pikes Peak region around 1000 AD, told of a cave in the Manitou Springs area where the Great Spirit of the Wind resided.
    In 1869, a recent settler to Williams Canyon named Arthur B. Love became intrigued by a cleft in the canyon's western wall. When he investigated the opening, he discovered a large limestone archway and a cave entrance that would later become Cave of the Winds.
    The modern era of Cave of the Winds began when brothers John and George Pickett went looking for new caves on a scouting trip in Williams Canyon in 1880. They discovered a small shelter cave near the limestone archway.
    When they lit their candles, they noticed that the flames flickered in the wind that blew from a nearby crevice. When they crawled through the passageway, they emerged into a large chamber that promised a world of exploration.
    That world of exploration was opened up by George Washington Snider, a stone cutter from Ohio who traveled to Colorado seeking fame and fortune. In the fall of 1880, Snider excavated passages from the Williams Canyon caves and discovered Canopy Hall. "It was as though Aladdin with his wonderful lamp had effected the magic result," Snider wrote.
    Snider continued to excavate and began preparations for guided tours. Cave of the Winds has been in continuous operation since February 1881 -- making it one of Colorado's original visitor attractions!
    Electrical lights were switched on in the caves on July 4, 1907, and visitors began traveling to Cave of the Winds in even great numbers -- first by carriage and railroad, and now by car and SUV!
    Congratulations! In reading the description, you found the secret bonus video!

      your mind will repair itself. It's your job, as the owner of your body and soul, to keep your self alive just long enough to pass through the threshold and begin the healing. Thanks to you I decided to give fountain pens a try, got my first pen last month (11th dec., a Lamy Al-Star), I stopped writing by hand when I was 8 (I'm now 27) when I got a computer because of my dyslexia, and outside of a few quick scribble of notes.
    I've shied away from writing, until I got the fountain pen, and after the fact I realize it's probably because gel/ball-point pens didn't really give the feedback that I would like when writing.
    For now it's getting used to writing, and experimenting a little with spicing up the style a little, seeing how you do it gives me some ideas on how to make it look nice as well, next to being functional.
    Thank you so very much for making me curious enough to poke my nose in the bottle of ink, and I hope others do as well, I'm just looking for reasons to write, instead of looking for reasons _not_ to write.

    • @RelaxingASMR
      @RelaxingASMR  7 років тому +17

      That's great! Stick with it and you'll never regret it. Now treat yourself to a nice notebook that has high quality fountain pen friendly paper in it and just write. Write anything even if it's the same word over and over again. This is how you train your hand.

    • @thorerik
      @thorerik 7 років тому +2

      Got any tips on where you can get some good quality paper internationally or what to look for? I've heard 90-150g/sqm has a "rule of thumb" for paper thickness.
      One of the few places that did specialize in high quality paper and writing implements got acquired by staples and later kicked out of the building and decided to call quits then :(

    I never could get the hang of those pens. I would always just scratch the paper or somehow release too much ink at once. Lol
    I like your handwriting! I wish more people still used cursive. It looks so nice and it's a kind of art. I'm glad I was in school when they still taught it. It's so much quicker and easier to write in it rather than printing, at least to me.

      +VerityLain I learned cursive, never got into it because they forced it on me too much. They made it less of a "See how beautiful your letters can look?" thing and tried to pass it off as "Everyone ever uses this so you have to!"

    • @isak2209
      @isak2209 9 років тому +1

      +VerityLain I learned it from 3rd grade til like 5th, but could never write without stuttering and forgetting how to write some letters. Then they stopped teaching it because it is literally useless in life. I'm 16 now and only 1 person I know still uses cursive.

      Julie Rakotovao Besides my sister, nobody I know here in America writes in cursive (my coworker says he can't even read it) but I still do just because I like the look of it and it. It makes me a little sad that no one uses it and even dislikes teaching/learning it. I guess with how messy and hard-to-read some people's writing is, their cursive would be even harder to read though so maybe it's good some people don't use it. lol

I love the handwriting too, quite fancy compared to mine, I tend to write with a little less of a forward slant and my letters are a bit taller and more slender, but I don't do the J style s just mainly because my hand doesn't seem to want to get used to it.

      The trick is to practice writing your words in bigger font, then working your way down. It's not that hard nor does it take very long when you practice correctly. Also, fore arm muscles are your friend, lift your arm and hand, don't try to stab the whole table. If you put too much pressure into your hand, you will get frustrated and your form suffers for it.

    • @taimao2
      @taimao2 8 років тому +21

      it's actually not a phobia. misophonia is a condition more related to synethisia. In some individuals the brain may connect certain sounds to the part of the brain processing anger and pain. It started for me at the age of 9 or 10. I could no longer bare the sound of pencil against paper. It was causing what my mind could only interpret as physical pain. There is barely any research into the condition. Some of my information may be incorrect so I encourage you to look up the condition on google.

    I absolutely loved this and hate to be so anal, but at 14:13 I couldn't help but see it written as 'Discoverd' and everything fell apart.
    I had to skip ahead until it wasn't in the frame anymore because my eyes kept drifting up to that because I knew it was there. It simply means you do a great job with your content (thank you for sharing) and also brings to mind conversations about misophonia and ASMR, and whether or not there's a correlation. I think we all perceive the same things, but simply react (or don't react) in different ways largely but not entirely due to conditioning.
    Also, nice pen. :)

      +TehMvnk Sorry about the missing "e". Many times as I'm writing, for what ever reson I'll leve out a leter and I usully know it right then, but keep going, hoping that it won't be noticd. As for a correlation between Misophonia (the hatred of sound or certain sounds), the only thing they might have in common, in my opinion, is that both conditions may have developed in early childhood. Thanks for watching and commenting.

      ***** Misophonia is the auditory equivalent to the visual response I described above, just a kind of severely uncomfortable reaction and strong aversion to specific sounds. Imagine if every time you heard a doorbell ring (or nails on a chalkboard, or styrofoam and cardboard rubbing) that you not only cringed, but perhaps got so angry you were trembling and inclined to release that wrath on the source of the sound or whomever was causing it; ultimately the Yin to ASMR's Yang.
