Most of us would have gotten "slid" by replacing the switch. With today's complex circuitry with smart intelligence built in, "firing the parts cannon" will get you in trouble. Excellent diagnosis!

last time we had a power window complaint after pre ordering regulator assembly per customer request, we removed door panel, used power probe to run window up and down. was working fine. look over at driver side master switch and customer had window lock on. the look on his face was priceless

Awesome job. To do the relearn all you need to do is roll the window all the way down then roll it all the way up and hold the switch up for about 10 seconds. then it will be programed in. If that doesn't work then there will be a button on the motor that has to be pushed. Can't remember the whole procedure for that one though. Been a while. Glad to see you back.

Yep you are right... But some customers you just can't convince. They think you just want to sell them a new motor... Always check all new motors current ramp before installed.. not because motor is a new motor means good. Check before install.

Hey, if you have some factory scan tools lying around I'd be happy to put them to work! :) Just like any tech we with work what we have. Sometimes the only way to get things done is to find a workaround. Yes, it may take longer in the video, but I think it helps teach the lesson to people because the majority of people working on these cars won't have access to the factory tool.

Ugh, frameless windows, I remember the days of the Australian manufactured Mitsubishi Magna @ 1996 to 2005 that came with manual and electric frameless windows, that didn't wind up or down automatically on using the door handle for that gap between the weather seal and the glass, and had multitudes of problems.... broken glass from opening or closing the door, wind noise, tight regulators, window motors that would cycle open and closed, burnt switches from customers trying to get the window more closed. The procedure for regulator and glass assembly replacement and ADJUSTMENT (adjustment was 99% of fault and cause of fault) used to take over 1.5 hours but pay only 0.6 on warranty, it was an artform.
I have refused to take on the physical jobs on frameless windows since then, I will never ever pull one apart and then put one back together again, there are jobs I won't take on and this is one of them because adjustment issues can cause comebacks over and over and over and over.
Ps. Great vid Mike, yet, no scope pattern or evidence will ever convince me to take on a frameless window job again on any car, too many variables that can lead to rework, a knick in a window felt/guide rubber that gives a false reading, a worn gear set, a cable roller that only gets onto a flat spot every 50th time the window is raised, a customer that has had someone throw up in the back seat whilst thinking the glass is down and now everything is sticking, sub-standard replacement parts.... you get the picture..... no doors or glass.

This makes the reason for using a scope when diagnosing a problem like this. Couple vehicle age and the worn bushings & brushes in the motor and BOOM! There goes the switch. I guess this vehicle is not like the newer ones that use the door window switch as an input to the window module and have the module control the power. Or they have integrated the power portion back into the switch like on older vehicles that didn't have the modules. Looking forward to the Feb 7th video. Thanks for this info. I can't wait for the temps to go back up around here so I can get into using the Pico again. I know my older Nissan has a bad ground for the start circuit. Ya, I know, why haven't you fixed it already. Well I'm going to use the Pico and my Fluke DMM to prove there is or is not a problem. When I did the work last July, I found the main battery ground was mounted to the front timing cover, and the bolt holding it was kinda tight, but not real tight. Consequently, the side of the terminal facing the aluminum cover was showing signs of arcing, as was the engine cover. Note here. The ground is up front on the ALUMINUM timing cover and the starter motor is mounted at the right side back of the engine to the engine and bellhousing. But the engine is all aluminum. I'm thinking there maybe some voltage drop here. The ground cable was not replaced during the repair. I chose to wait and do the testing to see if it would be better to have a cable going from the engine front to the starter mounting bolts at the rear of the engine. The truck's only got 105,000 miles on it, but in the last almost three years, most of the driving has been around town, so, I think its time to do a thorough test of the cranking system. The battery's a Nissan type, and only a couple years old. So, time will tell.

Good lesson Mike. I learned two things today. First, always try to address the root cause, not only addressing symptom. Second, Luxury car owners are the most frugal. It makes me wonder why he didn't just get a Nissan Sentra to save even more.

@@GoTechTraining Actually some of my customers that have daily meetings prefer texting so if I have any questions I text them or have them call me. I usually take photos and send them the diagnosis and estimate so when they agree to the repair I have a record of them agreeing to it...never had a problem.

This reminds me of a ford fusion window motor I replaced one time. The motor was integral to the window control module so I couldn't. Jumper the motor. The switch worked but it wouldn't move or draw current. Turned out there is a transister control in an engine bay electrical box that kept it isolated. Unit was replaced and have had no complaints.

Thanks for the reminders and good new info. I don’t think any of the scan tools would include amperage draw as a pid. U might b able to control it bidirectionally but that would b about it. Perhaps another way to get the pattern would b to go to the fuse and use your amp camp with a fuse loop. Next one I do, will b checking not just amount of current, but also the pattern with my trusty little Vantage Pro. Thanx again!!
Hey Bill, yeh you're probably right with the PID data. As for the fuse idea...that's perfect. You could check this think out without even removing the switches! Some cars are hard to get the switches out.

I saw your video on the window motor and switch problem. It is funny, you made A good video and have lots of nice equipment and a clean shop. The one thing that you are overlooking is using UA-cam to watch and learn for yourself. You are always learning in this business so keep an open mind because that's how you get better. ;First off you said that it is a smart switch and smart motor right? What's happening is that the new cars are using computers to run things. It use to be we used basic fuses and relays when we fixed stuff. Its a one dollar fuse or a five dollar relay. Nowadays we have modules and computers. So when your window switch or window motor module or computer goes bad it can cost you hundreds or thousands of dollars.;. So you need first off to scan and or ask your car what's wrong by simply hooking up your scanner and look for codes or in layman's terms ask the computer what is wrong. Simple right? hook up your scanner because then you will see in the BCM (Body Control Module) there is a reset procedure or a relearn for this car. First you but the window down and hold the switch for five seconds then you put the window up all the way holding it again for another five seconds then just cycle the key 0ff and on you are fixed. The car as had a new relearn procedure and the computer will tell your smart switch and smart motor how to act. The window will raise and lower in time. and everything will work right again. there are lots of cars using that procedure . it is like shutting off your maintenance warning light .Or your ABS lamp warning or your check engine lamp, you need to scan and check for codes and or relearn procedures. with the age of that it is very possible that that motor will physically work, but not be correct. there may be an identical one that is wound or made differently for use on a smart switch system. physically fitting is not always the only concern. great video as always.

Nice video. I would have checked the current, but only have an ammeter and clampmeter. I wouldn't be able to slow down time and see the noise. I don't think. The average might have been different enough. But I might not have figured out it was a poor quality part. thanks for taking the time to make this video.

It's something we do as a no brainer in so many other things...Brake pads are worn out, but worn uneven. Must be sticking caliper slides or something. You don't just slap a new set in..you repair the cause. Sometimes people just have a hard time relating that back to electrical diag.

To be complete you probably should have evaluated the effort required to move the window up and down by moving the mechanism manually. As you eluded to there could be something wrong with the mechanism (gears, slides etc) that are causing excessive load and the motor(s) to draw excessive current. Especially since the motor was changed and the problem persisted. Cheap motor or not I would be surprised if it would draw 3x the current of a "good" one. It might have just required simple cleaning and lubrication. Followed by a current check again. I'd like to see you try that as a follow up.

Hey, thanks for watching! No, I typically don't replace both. The drivers side likely sees greater failure because it's used significantly more. When it comes to power windows, I typically only fix what's broken.

I get a written "CDR" from the customer, declined repairs can get you dragged into court, cover your hindquarters.
Do it yourselfers are always trouble, "DIY" will take a chance and renew the window motor themselves and who knows how that will turn out.
I weed out the diy types, it just makes life easier.

That still leaves an unanswered question. It may or may not have an affect on this video, but still a good question!
What was the original issue? The motor was replaced, but did not fix it. The switch was replaced, and temporarily fixed it, but blew out the switch again. So, it appears that the original window motor was replaced, unnecessarily. The switch was what was bad.
Was it that the original switch went bad, and the original motor was still good. But the replacement motor was low quality, but didn't fix the switch problem. Then, when the switch was replaced, was it a good quality switch, or a cheap aftermarket product? And the additional switch that you used in the video, was it a good quality part? Did a cheap switch destroy the aftermarket motor? Was the aftermarket motor bad all of the time? What caused the original malfunction, and can you condemn the replacement parts on quality anyway, when the original oem parts failed, causing this whole chain of events? This leaves a lot of head scratching moments! I hear a lot of comments about the sole use of original oem parts, only! However, the original oem parts have failed, that's why the repairs are being done! What is to say that a more expensive oem part, that has already failed, will be of a better quality than an aftermarket part! Many times, we see this on older vehicles, anyway. Do they plan on keeping the vehicle another 15 years? All parts are subject to malfunction. I guess it's now more of a service dept guarantee on a repair, and a trust with whether or not a part will outlast a repair warranty. Certainly, a two week fix is only acceptable for any part from a vending machine, downwards!! For a repair shop, I certainly wouldn't accept that time frame. And as a shop operator, I would go to the supplier for warranty reimbursement! Or no longer buy replacement parts from them! But, at this point, can you actually point to a specific fault for any of these malfunctions? Did a bad switch cause problems with a good motor? Did a bad motor cause problems with a good switch? Will Luke and Laura ever make up? Find out tomorrow on...no wait, that's a different show. Lol

Don't know why as the 2 main components had been replaced prior to me seeing the car. This happens a lot. I can't say for the motor, because it didn't come from us...but his switch was top notch quality from us! Thanks for watching/commenting...

I guess a cheaper motor is less effective and it will turn slower and electrical motors draw more amperage when turning slower (just a guess), but it might not be in this case, more resistance (slower speed) as you also mention can cause higher amperage draw, Great as usual Mike
Hey G Johan, thanks for watching! It's a theory, sure sounds kinda possible. If you look close at the current waveform though, you can see the red channel drops to 0 sooner than the blue trace. That's because the new window motor is actually finishing its travel faster. So, the new motor is actually faster, not slower.

I.HAVE nissan 350z 2007 roadster which is faulty. The issue is the passenger side windows works intermitently. I have replaced the switch and the motors without success. I have followed all the diagnostic tree from the service manual the only so have ruled out the harnesses. The only thing left left is the bcm. Have you seen anything thing like this in the past
So if you’re able to jump the terminals and power the motor and the window moves up and down, does that verify that the switch is faulty?
Also, the window can’t be operated from driver or passenger side switch
When I took off the switch, all the wires came out now I don’t know where to put them back in. What goes where the red the green where it what hole does it go into? Can you help me out on that?

Even though my power windows do work on my 2006 G35 coupe, when I do open the door and they do drop down slightly but when I close the door they automatically go up 100% on their own. So I guess that's a good thing then I'll stop worrying so much about this car it's used but new to me

Did we really complete this diagnosis? Cause and Effect right... What if the motor was not installed correctly or there was a problem with the regulator. I would think that any binding would cause crazy amperage no? especially with the amperage that we see going down..
Hey RJ_Make, great questions! This one was replaced as a motor/regulator assembly. The customer confirmed the part was an economy line and did not approve any money spent upon confirming the ugly amperage draw any further. The part he purchased was 1/5 the price of the OE.

Please help, 2005 g35 sedan. No windows work. If I jump black and white wires the window moves. Changed master switch still no go. Plus at night the switches don’t light up. Any help would be great.

I don't think it's binding, the window was actually fast to go up and down before the switch and the motor burnt

Hey Israel, sounds like it's going to be an electrical issue. I agree it doesn't sound like a window switch casuing the turn signals to not work. Maybe an intermittent connection/corrosion in some shared connector that lead to both?

(Naturally I'm here because my passenger side window is not functioning. Exact same issue, now I'm wondering whether to buy a motor or a switch)

All my windows stopped functioning... along with just the lock button. The unlock works. My motors are working bc i like a dumbass used my key fob to roll them down and now they are stuck down. I think it is an issue with the master switch. But could I just bypass the switches to just get them back up until I can resolve the problem completely? (Been rainy where I am)This is a 2013 infiniti g37x sedan. But I imagine itd be similar to what you did with the passenger window to check the motor.

Hey Mike, Great video as always . never heard of having to go throu all that stuff just to diagnose a window motor, but i guess they're all different. Does the bcm also work the power windows?
Hey Jeremy, thanks for watching! Yeh, this was a definitely a lot more than just a simple window motor diag. They get even more fun on newer cars that run door modules.

@@GoTechTraining what's a door module?
A door module is a networked module that controls the doors electronics. power locks, windows, maybe memory seat buttons, power mirrors, etc. That module then networks off to the BCM maybe. No we have a lot fewer wires running through the door jamb. Power, ground, some comm lines...but we aren't running load wiring to each window/door lock of the whole car. Module to module communication is a wire saver!

Is it possible that the passenger side door had something wrong causing the higher amp draw like a tight window track, seal, dry regulator etc?

Hey Sancte, only one...and it wasn't a frameless. I had pulled the regulator and motor and had the window held in the frame with tape overnight...came in the next morning, tape let loose....window shattered in the door :(

Haha yeh, i really hammered that point home! I did watch someone else do it. Late 2000's Mustang i think it was. One of those where he grabbed the door and slammed it like he normally would...except the second he let go of the door he remember and tried to grab it back...it was too late. Bad day for him!
