So happy for you two! I would totally make the downstairs bedroom the guest room. That way they have their own full bathroom and if they are having issues sleeping they can watch tv or whatever in the entertainment space down there without bothering you guys. Also you wouldn’t have to use the office as a dual purpose room. I can’t wait to see wait to see what you do and love all of your ideas!
I actually disagree with this. Out of 365 of the year, how many days are guests actually going to be staying over? Don't inconvenience yourself for the short few days that guests may stay over. If tv is important, add it in your office/guest room. It can also be your "video previewing" tv too.
I would use the downstairs bedroom as a the craft room if you end up needed to turn the upstairs spare bedroom into an actual bedroom (aka if you have kids down the road)
I'm begging you & everyone else: keep your ceiling fans! 😂 They help so much with air circulation year-round & can lower your heating/cooling costs if used correctly!
I agree 100% You will be glad you did. Even just painting them white to match the ceiling is a good short-term fix to help them blend in a bit...replace with new sleek fans when you can.
I 1000% agree. I have found that the savings is much more than people think. Someone said that aesthetically they aren't pleasing BUT they can be made less noticeable. Check the wax toilet ring. It may just need to be reseated. Simple wax ring, cheap and easy.
Congratulations on the new house! The lock on the basement door could be to prevent kids/toddlers going down the stairs in the basement. That’s the reason why we installed a lock on the basement door.
When I lived in places where there were basements, they always had locks on the interior doors like that because basements typically also had stormdoors. I'd always figured that since there was an egress without a standard deadbolt, that one was added to the next most exterior door then.
It's funny how there's always some weird stuff with a new home, whether it's a strange closet or doors that don't close properly! I can't wait to see all of the makeovers and renovations you guys do!
So happy for y’all! I’d love to see like a small mock-up floor plan so we can get a vibe of how the house flows. It would be fun to see you move room to room while knowing how it looks!
I really love when doors don't open up smack into a huge room as well. I usually CREATE a space like that with a bench with storage for shoes under it. Since they also don't wear shoes in their house, I wonder if that wall can't be sorta.. hollowed out? and made into shelving to hold their shoes.
Aside from liking the separation and it honoring the architecture of a 50s house, I’d keep the wall for the simple reason that it won’t be easy to patch in replacement hardwood floor if what’s there is original.
Congratulations to both of you ❤ I would make the downstairs bedroom the guest room personally. That way you and your guests have more privacy. There is so much space to decorate!! Can't wait to see what you do.
I love how you kept in bloopers and really showed your personality in this and I really hope we get to see more of that. And the house is STUNNING I’m genuinely so excited to see what you do with everything 🥰💕
I am so happy for you and your husband. Owning a home is such a wonderful experience in which you can truly make something your own. I’m excited to see what you do!
Congrats Tina! I can’t wait to see what you guys do to make this house yours. You mentioned you guys have a lot of family and like to entertain. The playground set might come into use if you have family and friends with young kids. It’s a great way for the kids to keep occupied so the adults can have adult time. Also, if you plan to have kids in the future.
Congratulations on the new house! My family also has a similar tradition when moving. Before anything is allowed into the house, rice, soy sauce, and water have to be brought in first. Bonus if we include a bunch of leafy greens (money). I can't wait to see what personal touches you add to make the house your own.
Congratulations on your new home I am from Chicago, glad you have a garage AND Try Lu Malnati's Pizza or UNO's I like Gino's but it is #3 for me Lou's is number ONE! Can't wait to see what you do with the house....many blessings!
What a beautiful home. So happy for you both. My advice take your time on big renovations. You need to live in the house for a bit and feel your way around to see what you want to do. And how it will work! Congrats again and welcome home
Congratulations on the new house, can't wait to see what you do with it! I have always been told to hang a crystal from the ceiling wherever there are a lot of doors together, like your garage and backyard ones. I would definitely make the basement bedroom for guests since there's a full bath. Will you get a pet now?
Celing fans are everything! I don’t know of anything better to help lower utility bills. They will make a huge difference from spring to fall. This house will be such a wonderful patchwork of projects for you, I think you will have so much room for you to make it your home.
I love love your basement !! Its fantastic !! The natural wood floors, even a fire place... this is perfect for tons of projects for you ... so much space and rooms for you to be creative...so happy for you two , you were lucky to find such a nice place with a big yard and space to grow ...
Definitely using your ceiling fans will reduce your utilities year around. I had removed the fans in the den and a bedroom and quickly replaced them with fans that can change direction. Perfect for winter when your heat stays at the ceiling. Change the fan direction and it pulls the warmer air down to the living or sleeping areas.
Please be careful to cover the vents/pipes. I'm talking about that one in the entry closet. Don't try to remove on your own. They might be made of asbestos.
I can’t wait to see how you transform this home!! My husband and I are in the process of buying a home, and we can’t wait to do projects and make it our own.
Congratulations to you and Brian on your new home!!! Can’t wait to see all the beautiful DIYS that you will be doing. May your new home bring you love and happiness!!!!
Congratulations on you new home, how exciting. I just discovered your channel today and started by watching the bathroom makeover, then this one, figured best to start at the beginning for the home remodel. Traditions for moving to a new home - I was always taught, by my grandma who raised me, that you Never take an old broom to a new home, always buy a new broom. And of course a walk through with some lit sage!
I would use the basement bedroom as a guest bedroom since there is a whole bath down there :). Even family and friends can feel intrusive in your personal bath so it’s a super good set up! And visiting people can be super fun and eventful but having some separation is good for people to catch their breath
Great house Tina, congrats to you both on your first purchase as homeowners!! That basement is a great size, have you thought about installing a kitchen and renting it out as a large 1 bed basement flat?? It would pay a large chunk of your mortgage and is a great way to move up the property ladder or even become mortgage-free quickly. Just a thought but it's what I'd do, especially while it's just the two of you 😊
Aside from random house tips from me scattered around 😅 congratulations over all on both of your first house together and brand new home! Me at all your diy dreams come to fruition! I am Vietnamese as well and we do the rice, salt, and water thing.
Is a beautiful home with a lot of potential. Little by little you will fix it so beautifully. Congratulations!! May God bless your home and you guys as well.
i cant waittt to see how you transform this house!! also, i would love to see brian in your videos, especially in the renovation videos. i feel like seeing you work on the house together would be really nice instead of him always staying behind the scenes 😊
Ok. Stop shaking the toilets before you break the wax seal and get leaks, LOL. It looks like the bolts are missing, you may only need to get bolts. Don't know why the previous owners took the toilet bolts and closet rods, LOL. And tighten the bolts on the toilet seats as well. Or get new seats, I always did when we moved into a new house. I am so happy for you both. Your first home is so exciting. And I am really happy you moved back to your family. I had my extended family around for only the first 5-6 years of my life and I missed them very much when we moved only 1 hour away but I barely saw them anymore. I can't wait to see all your changes but don't go into debt doing it. Yous have a whole lifetime to change things. Best of luck to yous in your new home.
Congratulations!! That backyard is massive! What a gem that the previous owner was a landscaper. I would turn the basement room into an office or guest room. It's tucked away where it's quiet & you have a 2nd fridge. Win, win! Can't wait to see your new DIYs!
This house is a great blank canvas- congratulations! I look forward to all the new DIY projects! And the only moving superstition I have is that I always buy new brooms, mops, vacuums, and garbage cans. Never carry the old filth with you!
I was expecting an unfinished basement but omg it looks awesome!! Love that. Perfect for movie nights and entertaining. ❤️ love your new house! Cant wait for all the DIYS!
God, the house is huge! (says a girl who lives in a 30 square meters studio :D). I would turn out the basement room in a craft room to have intimicy for creating cool stuff. And the 3 main rooms: one for the house owners, one for the guests and one for the kids :) I can't wait to see how you will transform this house in a cozy home and hope you will keep the boho style :)
I have to agree with everyone else. Having 2+ levels the upstairs will never be cool enough or warm enough without them. Congratulations on your new home!
I just started watching your channel for the DIY stuff:) some ideas to consider: make the basement into the master bedroom (That is, if it has adequate heat/ac.) If your not planning on having children, combine 2 of the bedrooms into 1 room, and make that into your primary entertaining space. Echoing the other posters about the ceiling fans, please keep them, with those going, I don't have to have the ac as much.
Congratulations! Your new home is beautiful and your going to make it even better. I would definitely make the basement bedroom into a guest suite. Your guests will have their own bathroom and sitting area and even cold beverages with the fridge down there. Whatever you chose to do I'm sure it will be wonderful.
Yesss so excited for you both! Just a tip, you can tighten a bolt on the bottom of the threads of the toilet to help it to stick to the ground/not jiggle around lol
Congratulations on your new home. I can see you had a lot of work a head of you. I would be looking forward on seen all of your creation and DIY project.
Haha this was the funniest empty house tour, couples therapy in the closet 🤣 I remember feeling the same way when we first moved into our house and pointing out all the areas that need improvement. Congratulations on the new house, that fire pit looks amazing!!!! Super excited to see what you do. I know you’ll be so much faster than we were working on the house so hopefully I can get more ideas from you haha
Congratulations on your new home! --Oh, the joys of home ownership...since your home was built before 1978, please be careful of lead paint and ,as others have mentioned, asbestos. --For a lot of your projects, you & Brian (and UA-cam) will be able to do! For those times when you need help, it is so hard to find a good/great handyman! So ask friends/family, etc...also pay by the job, not by the hour. --Ceiling fans are your friends!!! --Bi-Fold closet doors suck!!! Tina, you & Brian will create a home that is perfect for you! Thanks for inviting us into your new home and all of the many wonderful projects and updates to come!
The downstairs basement area I would use that for a guest bedroom and they have their own bathroom situation and where the refrigerator and that nook is ,I would put maybe like a kitchenette area so that way when your guest come over they actually have like a mini apartment downstairs….. but your home is lovely it’s pretty big and spacious congratulations Tina!!!!!
I absolutely love your personality! It's so vibrant and positive. I recently visited Chicago with my bf and loved it there. We're from CA. Would love to meet you one day
Congratulations on your new home. I really love it and cannot wait to go on this journey of renovations with you guys! I would definitely use the basement for guests.
Oh Tina and Brian what lovely news, house looks beautiful and with your touches is going to be even more beautiful. Good luck in your new home and well done to you both, big love xx🐝🌻☀️🙌🏽🥂
Guuuuurl this house is amaaazing! I'm in love with it! Soooo big and you can make so much out of it! I'd make the downstairs bedroom with the closet into a guest room. Soo happy for you!
Congratulations on your new home. I love your basement. I’d put the guest room down there. They’d have their own bathroom and fridge very close. More privacy too! Enjoy. It’s a lovely home.
What a great house! I'll be honest, I would make the downstairs bedroom your guest room... especially since there is a full bath down there. AND, there is so much privacy there as well. Then you could use your upstairs bedroom as an office. Just a thought... I know you will make this house just beautiful, but take your time, it doesn't all have to be done all at once! (I'm quite impatient, so I know how you must be feeling!)
Well, welcome to the Chicago area (where I live) but why on earth would you leave beautiful California to come to ugly, gray-wintered Illinois?!! Haha. I want to eventually move west. Our winters in the Chicago area are so dark and there's no sun (only grey skies) for weeks. That house looks like such a typical Chicago bungalow with all the quirky "upgrades" of previous owners. I'm sure you will make it so much better. My house has those ducts in all the closets too because central air conditioning was added many years after the original construction, and there was nowhere else to put the aircon ducts. Looking forward to seeing all your diy projects, but I would suggest hiring an actual licensed plumber to fix the moving toilets. They definitely should not be moving that much so there may be something seriously wrong with the way they're installed.
As someone that also made the cross-country move to CA, I can offer that housing prices are REALLY bad out here. You become blasé to the earthquakes and fires, and the me of ten years ago would be aghast at that. But mostly it's the housing prices, cost of living as a whole (gas is pretty terrible). A lot of my friends here are moving - either up to the PNW, or down into Mexico.
Welcome back to Chicago! Congratulations on your new home! I love it! I love the the yard and all the light you get for the plants! I can’t wait to see how you make it your home.
I can't remember having such fun on an empty house your😂😆👌! Tina, you burnt the house down! You and Brian (forgive me if I spelt that wrong) are a hoot! So much space! You were right about the swing and the backyard. That room with the six windows is awesome for plants! The basement is a whole house in itself😰! That extra room? Wow, idk. I live in a tiny, so let me think about it. I'm so excited for the millions of makeovers to come and excited to see your craft room! You made my Sunday because I'm sore from tackling a few DIYs of my own😆. Thanks for sharing.
What an awesome first house! So happy for you! I am a crafter as well and although I do have a dedicated craft room, to have a space like your basement bedroom with a huge sink right outside the room would be ideal! and a quiet place where you can record your videos! Something to think about! It would be nice as well as a guest bedroom. Good luck with you new endeavor! Can’t wait to see what kind of new diy’s you come up with!
Oh Tina I'm so happy for you and Brian! I have missed so much content dealing with our recent hurricane. But I'm trying to catch up! Can't wait to see all the neat things you will do to your new home! Jo
So happy for you two! I would totally make the downstairs bedroom the guest room. Ditto on the downstairs room! Makes it so much easier so they don't have to share your bathroom!
Yes!! And as a guest it is nice to feel like you have some privacy and aren’t a burden on the host lol
I actually disagree with this. Out of 365 of the year, how many days are guests actually going to be staying over? Don't inconvenience yourself for the short few days that guests may stay over. If tv is important, add it in your office/guest room. It can also be your "video previewing" tv too.

I'm begging you & everyone else: keep your ceiling fans! 😂 They help so much with air circulation year-round & can lower your heating/cooling costs if used correctly!
Second that!! Keep them. If you want a different one then do that but keep them!
I love my ceiling fans!! They help with getting rid of smells, great in the summer and just wonderful to have.
Agreed! You can do a nice little diy upgrade on them but you guys should really keep them fans!
Ready to make so many amazing memories with you ❤️. I love you!
Our best adventure yet 🥰🥰💛
Aww... Good on you, Brian! Congratulations & Best Wishes!!! 🏡🏙️🌆🌃
The fact that you'll be decorating your home without restrictions OMG can't wait
Congratulations again, you guys did good......

That's what I was thinking 🌱💚

In Germany we give salt and bread to people in a new home to wish them well.
Very excited to see what you'll be doing with the new space! :)
That’s so interesting! How is it given? In its original package? Cup? I’m intrigued 😅
@@namelastname8273 yeah, usually it’s bread from a bakery that‘s in like a paperbag and then a package of salt to go with it :D

I am so tempted to keep the half wall near the entryway as is and build a slat wall with stained wood. 😍
Great house and a super yard! My only advice is to live in the space awhile. Once you know how it works for you the design decisions will be easier.
Very happy for you both, a beautiful house and very excited to see you DIYing here. Congrats.
Amazing! We’re in the home buying process too and it’s so stressful!
Beautiful home :) hope you make some happy memories and amazing DIYs!
Good luck to you!!! It’s stressful but very worth it. Thank you for the support, Koninika 💛💛
Congratulations on your new home. Can’t wait to see what you do with the place.
Would love to meet you one day
Oh my gosh it just kept getting better and better!! I love it. Congratulations🥳❤️
Keep the fans ! They use less electricity than air con and they help provide air circulation for plants 🌿💕
Congratulations on your new home. I really love it and cannot wait to go on this journey of renovations with you guys! I would definitely use the basement for guests.
Congratulations on home ownership! I know from your DIYS you'll have fun and it'll look great when you're done!
Congratulations on your new house. I look forward to watching you making it a home.🤗
We also have a new broom when moving. It's due to sweeping away the problems from the old house and not bringing them with you.
Wow that is really a HUGE house! The rooms just kept going on and on!
Congratulations!! Can't wait for the upcoming videos!!
Oh Tina and Brian what lovely news, house looks beautiful and with your touches is going to be even more beautiful. Good luck in your new home and well done to you both, big love xx🐝🌻☀️🙌🏽🥂
Hi Tina would also love to see the front of home outside too. Your bonus room would make a nice home office.
You should repaint the kids slide and sell it. That would be so much fun to see how you’d upcycle it!
Guuuuurl this house is amaaazing! I'm in love with it! Soooo big and you can make so much out of it! I'd make the downstairs bedroom with the closet into a guest room. Soo happy for you!
Awww. Thank you so much, Letícia! 💛💛
Congratulations! Can't wait to see what you do!
What a lovely home! Congratulations!
Absolutely agreed. I don't know how many long term guests you might get, but having that degree of separation is amazing.
Beautiful house. So much potential to make it your own. I look forward to each project along the way!! Congrats again!!
Awww awesome congratulations to you guys!!! Very big deal your first home you deserve it can not wait to see what you do with the place!!
I cannot wait to see how you style your new home!! I’m so happy for you guys!! I just know the videos after this are gonna be 🔥
Thank you sooo much, Vanessa! 💛💛
Jo
I hope you are doing alright, Jo! Thanks for always showing your support 💛💛
