Hey lestro here to explain some things. A while back during some updates I don’t remember the spells got bugged some effects like buffs didn’t trigger with them this may be why the damage was so low earlier with the spells. Second thing rot woman’s first phase can’t be finished off by a crit. It used to bug out and spawn her second phase at around 5-15% health. Fromsoft’s fix to this was to make her not able to phase transition during a crit and a few seconds after leaving her not able to be harmed. Hope i said all that right, cool video and this was my first stream. 🍞
Yeah, there are problems like that in the game still. The most notable I’ve found is that the Incantation “catch flame” sometimes doesn’t want to have a hit-box
For Bestial Sling, it's not designed to be a main damage source. You use it as a complimentary damage source because it attacks very fast. Let's say you dodge an attack, but you're not close enough to get a melee in before another attack. That's when you use Bestial Sling, it keeps the poise timer up and let's you still get in a little damage.
or just use throwing knives. They also reset poise timer, they 'come out' even faster, they don't use FP nor do they require equipping a seal, and you can make them for basically free, oh and 9/10 cases, they actually do more damage than the sling.
@tulokthebarbrarian2033 I know this is an old comment and won't get a response, but I don't care. He might actually be using the short sword or the long sword or literally any melee weapon. He said its side tool used for its fast casting time and to keep poise damage up while retreating, so this comment makes no sense, I'm sorry and I loved seeing you edge😊
I know how much work ends up going into videos like these from getting the actual footage and then stitching it all together in an entertaining format. Hopefully this comment helps with the algorithm. Your elden ring builds are a highlight for my fridays!
Just so you know, there was a bug when critting Malania to kill her phase 1 which insta killed her phase 2. They fixed this by making her unable to die to crits in phase 1. She is also unable to 'phase' when hit by a spirit ash and some magics. All hits do work however.
So, I noticed something. At 18:30 when you're talking about the questionable hitbox. It's not. Morgot swings the sword in his right hand off the spear when he's finished the attack. You were hit by a sword, not a janky hitbox. Also, I think you were just hit by the shockwave of the slam for the Borealis fight
i haven't actually used the blue insignia, only the ritual shield, but if it works the same way (it should) then fextra's math is correct but obtuse it should just work as if you had a fifth piece of armor with 50 damage resistance across the board since all damage reduction effects are multiplicative, if you have 30% reduction on your armor (0.7x damage taken), the talisman would then be another 50% reduction on top (so 0.7 * 0.5 = 0.35% total damage taken) this is equivalent to fextra's kinda confusing formula where it's 0.5x + half of your armor (0.3 /2 = 0.15) for a total of 0.65% damage reduction, or 35% damage taken. not sure why they decided to word it that way / make up an unnecessary formula for it, it's adding complexity where there doesn't need to be anyway, that means that with all your buffs, instead of adding together like that, (24 + 20 + 10 +10) / 2 = 32 +50 = 82 it would actually be 0.76 * 0.8 * 0.9 * 0.9 * 0.5 = 24.624% damage taken, or 75.376% damage reduction again, i think the confusion stems from the formula saying " 50 + (base negation) / 2" and assuming that you know that negation effects are multiplicative and not additive . note, you can verify in the status screen where it shows all your reductions and doing some quick math with the negation that your armor pieces provide (give or take some rounding errors since the game only shows a certain amount of decimal points, but the math i think uses floats so there's more decimals that you can't see
For future reference on faith caster builds: on equal upgrade levels the godslayer seal is better than the finger seal from it's 27 faith wield requirements on to like 61 or so faith where the erdtree seal is best. Sticking to the finger seal is a bad idea
Actually the Erdtree Seal surpasses it later than that, until you reach the magical 69 Faith the Godslayer's Seal is the strongest general-purpose pure Faith Seal. Now if you were doing either a Dragon Cult or Fire Monk/Giant type build and don't feel like dual-wielding seals, then the Seal that boosts those types of spells will outperform the Godslayer's Seal, aside from Electrify Armament. However if you're like me and tend to run a mess of different spells and are looking for the best Seal without factoring specialties, the Godslayer's is the best from 27-68 Faith. This fact made the no Crimson Flask Run quite painful to watch.
@@AceAviations2 thanks for the correction! But yeah, that 20-30% damage boost from specialized seals tends to outperform godslayer on direct damage spells. ...yeah it really hurts to watch youtubers do faith builds tbh
@@BigHatLoganGaming the trick is to use the seal with the highest scaling as the casting tool. And then have the one with the buff In the off hand. They took out the same specific damage boosting double seal buff. But this build uses the shield off hand. So not on this build.
So, small note, if you need a Malenia cheese in the future, Burn O Flame (the fire giant spell) goes off surprisingly fast, covers a ton of ground so she cant really dodge, can stunlock her, and deals crazy damage (more than flame of the fell god but a lot more reliable). Remember Ancient Lightning strike from the all elements run? Yeah, Burn O Flame is basically a fire version of that that also throws humanoid enemies skyward like a monster hunter hammer golf swing. I almost beat her just with that without really building super hard for it but i ran out of FP and had to smack her a couple times. You'll probably be able to take her down with this strat, uncharged cast to put her in stun, gives you time to fully charge it up
Imagine having low health in fortheight. Clutched the victory royal against fort knight . Keep up the good work. This run in spirit feels like metal bat from one punch man, the hero that gets stronger after taking damage.
Happy birthday Phil! I'm so happy that you got to finish on this edging run just in time, I hope it felt great to be done! So glad Malenia didn't ruin it for you ;)
I've been laughing at all the "You're probably watching this on a binge and don't even realize you aren't subscribed" and then I realized I wasn't subscribed
Anyone else notice that each video lately he's been counting on the final Draconic Tree Sentinel in Farum Azula? He's at 7 now, as of this video. Well played, Tulok. Well played.
I remember at some point in the patch history damage buffs weren't applying properly to spells? It seems like something like that might've been going on, because those damage numbers were rough. Imagine, an Elden ring bug, in Fort Haight?
Happy birthday Phil! You're one of my three favorite Elden Ring youtubers and my very favorite D&D youtuber. I can't remember the last time I went a whole day without watching at least one of your videos. Thanks for everything!!
Hello, I have been subscribed for a while now, and I have to say, I've been looking up everything on my work computer, and me and the IT guys have never been closer, thanks!
Frenzied Burst tends to be my go-to cheese on Malenia for faith builds due to the AI being unable to detect it. Makes phase 1 super free, but you'll want a summon for the overly aggressive phase 2.
12:40 Tricia's main job is to give you buffs. Her uplifting aromatics were a lifesaver on my run where I had daedicar's woe for a playthrough 18:29 That looks like the slash that he accompanies the charge with, he has a slash hitbox for his sword on some of his holy weapon attacks, notably his hammer and spear attacks 19:43 The shockwave on the ground counts as the hitbox and it looks like you got knicked, really dumb though 21:20 You can i-frame dodge the lightning stomps but the timing is very tight. How I learned to dodge the jump one is to wait until you see him start to fall, some bosses have a small part of their animation where they fall slowly before the attack itself and that's your dodge window (except Malenia, fuck her) 30:46 A large part of what makes Rykard's Rancor useful is that it keeps stance pressure high even if you're backed away, but it's an unorthodox spell that isn't for everyone 43:33 She needs active damage to go to phase 2, critical attacks and poison are counted as passive damage. She's the only boss that also counts critical attacks as passive damage as far as I'm aware
Rykard's Rancor pairs pretty well with Ancient Death Rancor, they're both slow-moving projectiles, one of which is a bunch with pretty crazy tracking. That and you can throw in other spells with delayed damage things like Discus or Triple Rings of Light or the Phalanx spells. When there's so much shit flying at your target, at least a few things are going to hit.
About the boost stacking, if I remember my old DS3 theory crafting days correctly, there was a soft cap on defenses. after about 80 percent you's hit HEAVY diminishing returns on defenses, so I suspect that something similar is happening here, there's probably a softcap on defense, so one or more of the buffs becomes superfluous.
erdtree seal for better faith scaling, and radagons icon for better casting speed? the casting build could’ve been pretty good also could’ve gotten sepuku in the mountaintops to lower your health rather than use bloody slash the whole game 😸
the reason the three rings of light isn’t good is because it can only hit an enemy a few times and will not do extra damage if it hits more than the limit allows.
Eyy Happy birthday dude! You're a day after my brother. This one caused me physical pain so i give you a ton of credit for forcing yourself to complete this challenge lol
Happy Birthday dude, you just gained a new sub! Also going up the ballista path to Stormveil Castle, you can just up the path to the left and kill everything up top. It keeps you from getting hit and dying multiple times.
If you use pyromancy in future rememberances runs: Giantsflame Take Thee! is a bit easier to make work on Malenia. It doesn't have the janky trigger time, still knocks her down pretty easily, and has decent damage. Hope this helps!
For those also confused by the results at 36:55, here's the logic and a calculation. Each source of damage negation is multiplicative, so that each source always reduces your damage taken by the stated multiplier compared to if you didn't have it. Apply a new 20% negation buff, take 20% less damage than you were before, whether you had loads of negation or very little. So to speak, you take 80% of the damage you were taking previously. Using just the Commander's Standard, Black Flame's Protection, and Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman, the mathematical phrasing of the physical damage negation isn't 20%+20%+35% for a total of 75%. Consider instead how much damage each source lets through: 80%, 80%, 65%. Multiply all of these, and that's the total damage allowed through to the character (41.6%), and if you subtract this from 100% you get the damage negated (58.4%). Applying that same process to the buffs listed in the video for slash damage (noting that Opaline Hardtear is 15% resist in PvE, not 10%, and that the two pieces of armor apply separately) you multiply 80%*80%*85%*35%*87.1%*92.6%*50%*90% = 12.834% slashing damage not negated. Subtract that from 100% and you get 87.166% slash negation, which is what is displayed at 37:20. None of this gets into how the "Defense" stat works by the way, that one is way more complicated if you want exact results.
Really cool run. The build is similar to my death cosplay. Used the same talismans and the royal remains and scythes and found out how badly death magic fits this build, and I wasn't good at the game, so I died a lot and eventually played minecraft instead. Also I like the color of your guitar.
There’s a really consistent drop down to placidusax that has made me like the boss more. Falling off getting to a boss sucks. Look for a rock that’s just a little lower and pokes further out. Incredible run. Good work
my personal fextralife betrayal was when they convinced me hoarfrost stomp, a skill that works about half the time, was worth investing 9 somber smithing stones into
And one more note for me about Malenia and fire spells. For Flame of the Fell God, her AI knows to dge a specific point after any projectile is cast, including that spell. She will usually dodge and reset to neutral before it's anywhere near her if you keep an OK distance. Even better than spamming those though, when the FotFG knocks her down, rush in and use Burn O Flame (the pillars one from the Giant) and you will hit her with at least one pillar and knock her on her butt again. Fall back as far as you can, cast another Fell God, repeat. Be careful about when she waterfowls and keep your distance and you can kill her surprisingly easy. Phase 2 is a little tougher but only a little, and you can use Giantsflame take thee when she is stuck in place during Aeonia. If you are bored and have focus to spare, Frenzied Burst can be used to snipe her when she's far off.
Bro I watch iasip religiously the amount of references you put in makes me smile each time I see it I’ve subbed 100% for that alone plus love the vids keep it up man 👏👏
In case no one else mentioned, the Malenia phase 1 transition thing is known. if you stagger her raight at the edge of death do not use a critical on her, just hit her normally. maybe even wait for her to stand up.
37:51 honestly I agree. if you go through the effort to get all the necessary gear to get insane damage reduction, like, c'mon fromsoft, let us have this one
What I do for the ducky dance is start running in one direction, then when she does the final slash before she dashes forward, dodge backward. Works almost every time. ✨️
Ah, my people. I am a mediocre soulsborne player who also didn't make it very far in Sekiro cuz shite at parrying/deflecting. Glad to have found this channel.
I know I'm not a Patreon or member, so my suggestion has no sway, BUT as a fan of the dnd content, I think it'd be fun to see a challenge run in Elden Ring where none of your stats can go past 20
Giant Crusher RKR is what imagined the endgame to be when seeing this build, maybe bit biased to the Unga Bunga but always felt buffs like this are just better on bigger numbers. Pest threads sure, every little hit gets extra damage but if your damage is low with the hybrid setup it won't make it OP all of a sudden. My immediate thoughts were Giant Crusher or ornamental swords tbh, either Big boost for big number or still being able to powerstance with a decent weapon and stack the decent hits to strong numbers.
Just on the odd chance you havent learned it in 8 months lmao i figured id help explain why the damage resistance is funky here. Every source gives multiplicitive damage resistance, diminishing returns which is why Fextra says the branchsword halves other sources. Whats happening is the branch makes you take 50% damage, and having 20% more reduces the damage you take AFTER the 50%, so instead of taking 70% less damage you take 60% less, or 40% damage (50% being reduced by 20%) This is applied to every individual source, even individual pieces of armor which is why you get less defense than you would if you just added, say, the slash resistance of four pieces of gear.
Blasphemous blade AoW heals you for *30%* of yor HP?!? Where are you getting these numbers? It's 10%. Also, on the bubble perfume, only the extra 10% damage is an aura buff. The bubble is a separate buff. You can use it, get the 90% damage reduction bubble and then use Golden vow or commander standard and get that buff and still have the bubble on.
Edging can be tricky and time consuming.
I'm sure the payoff is well worth it though!
@@tulokmango6684 with this channel, it’s always worth it.

i haven't actually used the blue insignia, only the ritual shield, but if it works the same way (it should) then fextra's math is correct but obtuse

since all damage reduction effects are multiplicative, if you have 30% reduction on your armor (0.7x damage taken), the talisman would then be another 50% reduction on top (so 0.7 * 0.5 = 0.35% total damage taken)
this is equivalent to fextra's kinda confusing formula where it's 0.5x + half of your armor (0.3 /2 = 0.15) for a total of 0.65% damage reduction, or 35% damage taken.
not sure why they decided to word it that way / make up an unnecessary formula for it, it's adding complexity where there doesn't need to be
anyway, that means that with all your buffs, instead of adding together like that,
(24 + 20 + 10 +10) / 2 = 32 +50 = 82
it would actually be
0.76 * 0.8 * 0.9 * 0.9 * 0.5 = 24.624% damage taken, or 75.376% damage reduction
again, i think the confusion stems from the formula saying
" 50 + (base negation) / 2"
and assuming that you know that negation effects are multiplicative and not additive
.
note,
you can verify in the status screen where it shows all your reductions and doing some quick math with the negation that your armor pieces provide (give or take some rounding errors since the game only shows a certain amount of decimal points, but the math i think uses floats so there's more decimals that you can't see

80%*80%*85%*35%*87.1%*92.6%*50%*90% = 12.834% slashing damage not negated. Subtract that from 100% and you get 87.166% slash negation, which is what is displayed at 37:20.

So many use cases of these low HP mechanics would be so much easier to use/generally better if the Low HP threshold was 25% instead of 20%. (Or, 18%?)
it's all active at 20%, the armor he wears just only heals up to 18%
34:50 nah its not sunken cost fallacy its schadenfreude
Happy Birthday!! have a good one
Bro I watch iasip religiously the amount of references you put in makes me smile each time I see it I’ve subbed 100% for that alone plus love the vids keep it up man 👏👏
Happy birthday, Tulok!!
Your reaction after finally killing malenia sums up mine when I killed her for the first time.
Absolutely worth it for that over the top ending! Happy birthday 🎉
happy birthday man great video
Babe wake up new tulok and mango vid
Have a happy birthday Phil! Love the Elden Ring and the DnD content!
"And Shields aren't weapons" oops sounds like you just started a Captain America Elden Ring challenge.
What I do for the ducky dance is start running in one direction, then when she does the final slash before she dashes forward, dodge backward. Works almost every time. ✨️
Happy birthday, Phil! Here's hoping you have a great rest of your day!
I have nothing insightful, just saying happy birthday to who is easily my favorite youtuber right now :3
I'm loving the changing number of tree sentinel
I'm so relieved the icon on the ranking table is the skull and numbers. I was expecting, like, a box of tissues or splashing milk or something.
Ah, my people. I am a mediocre soulsborne player who also didn't make it very far in Sekiro cuz shite at parrying/deflecting. Glad to have found this channel.
Hey, Happy Birthday, Tulok!
lol yeah that dragon attack actually does have an extra hitbox from the head that hits right after the feet do
I know I'm not a Patreon or member, so my suggestion has no sway, BUT as a fan of the dnd content, I think it'd be fun to see a challenge run in Elden Ring where none of your stats can go past 20
Please, don't take a shot of water for every sexual innuendo, you will drown
That low fall to a death was caused by a Zip. I experienced the exact same thing in Caelid when on my way to talk to Gowry.
Whats happening is the branch makes you take 50% damage, and having 20% more reduces the damage you take AFTER the 50%, so instead of taking 70% less damage you take 60% less, or 40% damage (50% being reduced by 20%)
This is applied to every individual source, even individual pieces of armor which is why you get less defense than you would if you just added, say, the slash resistance of four pieces of gear.
i was so scared at the end thinking you would die before getting the great rune
The sleep pot strat is: sleep pot, 3 fully charged heavy attacks, critical hit, sleep pot. Then repeat
Amazing video already loved the pun
just downloaded twitch just to watch you live, love your content
Oh, jeez, you kept it up for almost 18 hours? You're supposed to see a doctor after four, I think!
As a person who has trued spells, the best one is the Moonlight Greatsword
And pest threads spears
I may be a liar, but it’s definitely possible to dodge the ducky dance with near perfect positioning and perfect dodging
Happy birthday bro. U share it with my brother n mine was 2 days ago. Anyway, love the videos/watching you lose your mind. Keep it up
percentage boosts are multiplied not added together ie 24% x 20% x 10% x 10% is 80% /2, 40% x 50%, 2.1 times boost
Happy Birthday :)
Thanks for all your vids, they are awesome!
Tulok paid for the whole seat but he only needed the *edge*
Are we now supposed to NOT hope for a Captain America run?
I got fired for using my work computer for all my elden ring tulok recommendations. Now I have more time for edging with Tulok.
Everytime you go to fort haight... i know what's coming... i know what you're going to say... and it fucking gets me everytime xD
I hope you never finish your time making such amazing videos!
Alright, the Edging in Fort Haight bit got you my sub. Take it and go.
Nice, when you introduced the theme I was hoping you would have the Gaga song
