Had one... He was an absolute unit of a hunter.
Snakes, Centipede, Geckos, Rats... They don't stand a chance. A bird flew in our house and couldn't find it's way out, he chased the bird around, leapt in the air and grabbed it mid-flight. I had to rush in to stop him from killing the poor thing.
They're ridiculously athletic.

I have a long hair dachshund. I would say this is pretty accurate. Excellent guard dog, very, very affectionate. She's a pretty good hiking buddy too. At 9 she still hikes several miles with me just fine. She is not trusting of little kids but is fine with strangers. She's ok with other dogs as long as the other dog doesn't come near me.(very possessive and can become aggressive) LOUD bark but she is quiet as soon as I ask her. Pretty obedient, smart but yes, definitely stubborn at times. She lives with my 15 year old cat with no problem, but is very jealous when the cat is getting attention; she just inserts herself between us. I love her exactly as she is.

Wife and I have 2 mini doxies! Love them! They are great! When they see ________ (fill in the blank) anything move dogs, cats, critters, birds they loose their minds and have to get them no matter what. Very determined! Very Funny! They play tricks on each other and seem to be very smart.

My family has had five: one full-size doxie when I was young, then two pairs of miniature doxies after I grew up. I loved visiting my folks to play w/ them, & always got down in the floor w/ them. They loved that. Names: Mr. Longfellow (first one); Little L & Tootsie (first pair); Max & Rosie (2nd pair).

Say what you want, but their combined refractoriness, independance and affection makes living with them so engaging and rewarding. I live with 3rd standard wirehaired doxie now - 1st came when I was 6, now I'm 36 and me and my own family are having a blast with her. They do need tailoring early on though for most of them will be testing boundaries of dominance - what worked for me was love and consistency, NO FORCE (it's so counterproductive with'em). Beside exposing them early on to people, other dogs and animals generally (we own a parrot and a cat) and rewarding them to stay near you during walk, I didn't give them no particular training. It would've been futile anyway.

Mine looks like #2 but mine is a mix. Doxiepoo. The only poo part is his muzzle and longer legs poodle paws. Otherwise he is stubborn. Loves everyone and loves to play. He loves to mess with my hubby. Jumps in his seat before he can sit down.
