Not sure what you mean on the first bit Ben (weight up and down). On the back foot I coach boxers never to let it go flat (planted), not ever. Acts as a brake and destroys mobility. Thanks for the question mate.
If any of you think these moves are too complicated to learn, remember this. Before you attempt to use any move against an opponent, you should practice it 10,000 times in a mirror. You should practice it 100 times against a sparring partner before using it in competition. Once you reach that point, the real learning process begins.
CHeck out the videos on the straight right hand and the long range right hook. You are right, to get true power the ball of the foot absolutely has to be planted to the ground, just not the rest of the foot.
I'm not talking about the corkscrew in particular. When he throws a right hand, his back foot pivots on the very tip of the shoe not staying on the ball of the foot. The less grounded you are, means less power transferred.
Part 2: ...in regards to the basic right hand. One thing I do notice is that the straight spine is a universal concept and perhaps that is the reason for the back foot not needing to be grounded, because the balance is there. Thanks for taking the rime to read this and reply.
I dig the speed ,strength behind ur hit n swings..I can tell wth a fake right, duck , close range left hook or upper cut, was all n one movements if optional... Sweat n powerful... I respect n really enjoy taking UR classes ..
thank-you Fran sands looked over your straight right video and like you said I was feeling vulnerable with my right hand and under rotating my hips corrected this some in my sparring session .and like you say I hit and got hit less because my opponent had to deal with a more well rounded attack.
+david schneider Excellent. Boxers are wonderfully resourceful. I little guidance and then you apply, learn and get better. Really appreciate you taking the time to feed back David
when you're feinting a uppercut like that and throwing a left hook another good thing about that is when you feint the uppercut your torquing your body to throw a hard left hook you getting your hips into the punch
Frank, love all your vids- u have a great ability explaining and simplyfying. Pity u are not also a muay thai guy ;) keep on posting these great vids and all the best 4u
You can over commit if you have a clear open shot especially if your opponent is unaware because of your angle, you want to ktfo of your opponent when you get the opportunity.
I'm a bit unfamiliar with fundamentals. There's a boxing/52 blocks teacher that says the best time to hit your opponent or take an angle is when your front shoulder is lined up with the opponent's front or back shoulder. Do you have more to add to the subject of when a good time to hit or take an angle is based on alignment with the opponent's shoulders?
Fran new sub and really impressed with you explanations, rationale and manner. very easy to watch and understand. great tips. thanks for the time and effort mate.
Fran, your videos are brilliant and you break it down to make it all so easy. If people watch your stuff and practice, practice, practice..... we'll have a lot of good young boxers out there!
Fran Sands Mayweather kind of does this. He'll duck down low like he's going to the body and then he'll throw a head shot at you. He does the same when he goes to the head too he'll be standing up a little straighter and then feint a head shot and then go to the body
Hello Sir, I am currently training in MMA, with a former background in traditional kungfu. I am a southpaw fighter and every time i throw my lead jab, my outside(right side) becomes vulnerable/exposed to my opponent(orthodox) 's left jab. How can i improve upon this? I have gone through your "7 ways to be successful with jab" video and I am implementing it in my attacks. Thank you for your awesome videos. They are very helpful.
Fran, I watch some old black and white boxing fights and when throwing wide body shots, around the liver and kidney area, they have he palm side of the hand facing 'out' and knuckle side of the hand facing 'in' towards the ribs. Seems a bit unnatural but even Sugar Ray Robinson did it. Don't see too many fighters throw body shots like that these days. Sorry, a bit of track but the punches your throwing in these vids, I was thinking are punches I don't see very often as well - they're great thou!
lastly not meaning to ramble. but the subtle changes in a game of inches mean everything which leads to not only a physical advantage but the mental advantage from the confidence cannot be understated .was wondering if you touch on the mental aspect of the game? and thanks again
+david schneider Good points David. Yes there are a few articles I've published on the MyBoxingCoach website that cover Boxing Psychology...worth a look.
I can’t land shit in sparring even though my technique is decent, I feel like I either don’t commit or pull them but either way I’m just not landing meaningfully
I like the deception in the feigning of a punch,it kids the opponent into a defensive move, and before he knows it bang you’ve landed,it’s a great tactical move,
Fran sands first off thank-you secondly as an orthodox fighter I am having good success with my left hooks and lead punches but having trouble mixing and landing my right straight s and counters any suggestions please?
+david schneider Thanks David. Yes, sounds like you may be under-rotating slightly and feeling vulnerable when you throw that backhand - this is quite common. Get in the mirrors and work the tech of the straight right again. Full, exaggerated rotation of the hips driven by that explosive thrust from the back foot. Check the straight right video.
Frank what's your feelings on Cus D'matto peek a boo style of boxing, I was wondering if you recommend ever switching from your stance to peek a boo during a fight ?
If u're not in top notch condition with great stamina, great timing, and great head movement - this style won't do any good for you. This style works only if everything is made right and spot on, if You lack any of these elements - u'll get hit badly. Pee a boo is a very stamina draining style and that's why every prime of any boxer who used this was so short.
Fran, amateur boxer from Canada here, also trying to be a doctor. Just wanted to say you channel is amazing and I use a lot of your advice. Would you be intrested in coming on my podcast via skype to talk some boxing? I've interviewed James Toney before!
I don't know if is his age or his calm....but he explains so well
Thank you

Try to use the feint to add power to the next shot. This happens with each of the demos on the vid. A bit of practice will pay off.
6 years old but still the best boxing content I’ve seen on YT
Christine Bennis, hero
Great job being motivated and making a difference of showing hope and determination

You are most welcome, thank you for your kind words.

Exactly right, 2 very complementary punches
CHeck out the videos on the straight right hand and the long range right hook. You are right, to get true power the ball of the foot absolutely has to be planted to the ground, just not the rest of the foot.

This is absolutely excellent...those deceptive punches are excellent. Povetkin used that body to uppercut shot against Whyte 🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊
this video is a lot help to show my boxers, thanks for all this advice your videos r awesome
Thanks so much Martin - really happy that you feel confident in showing this stuff to your boxers!!!

it actually opened up my uppercuts as well when I was more free with my back hand.
you're a great coach your videos are very helpful make some more thank you

My lip has been busted plenty of times with that shot. Never knew it was called screw shot. Trust me, if they lost power I'm glad they did.
when you're feinting a uppercut like that and throwing a left hook another good thing about that is when you feint the uppercut your torquing your body to throw a hard left hook you getting your hips into the punch
Excellent
I always thought a screw shot was more like a long range uppercut where you finish with your arm almost straight and your knuckles facing the floor.
Very good coach can learn a lot from you.
Thanks fran always pick up something new each time like a good shady bar
P
+774CISCO Hahaha - love those shady bars!

Thank you, that's very kind of you to say.
Don't you loose power if your going up with your body weight instead of down and also if the back foot is not planted when you throw the right hand?
Can boxers beat people who aren't bound by combat rules? Such as street fighters?
hi
how many champions did u train?
were u a pro?
u good.
Bien explique coach merci pour la vidéo yassine d'Algérie
Perfect!!
Fran, your videos are brilliant and you break it down to make it all so easy. If people watch your stuff and practice, practice, practice..... we'll have a lot of good young boxers out there!
Why don't you do a exhale on the shots in the videos if you don't mind me asking?
I like the idea, unfortunately disqualification would not be far behind :-)
Thx for the tip sir

The sweet science of boxing
I can’t land shit in sparring even though my technique is decent, I feel like I either don’t commit or pull them but either way I’m just not landing meaningfully
We all get like that from time to time. Work through it, use some feints and singles to get into it.
great video much appreciated!
+david schneider You're welcome, thanks David
Nice job on fitness app
Thanks very much and you are very welcome.
Enjoyed it. Thanks.
That jab is fast :O
Why do you hold your breath when punching? I may be wrong, but I can clearly hear you breathe but not while you're actually throwing the strikes?
I do breathe out when punching, sometimes I make noise, sometimes not.
your opponent won't really expect these punches coming that's what i really like about this
very good
Thnx sir i cant pay a personal trainer so this is a great addtion to fine tune my techniqe
