Yep, the same thing happened to me before a title fight for kickboxing. Everyone kept telling me he's going to come in hard and heavy and I kept waiting for it so I could counter punch him and it never happened. I end up losing a close decision. Definitely a hard lesson to learn.
Thank you. Got my first fight next week. I asked my coach what we are going to do. His response was: we will do what we do. Adjustments will be made once we see what they can’t do.
I am watching this after AJ vs Ruiz 2 and 2 of those tips with the jab + mobility and the tieing up avoiding bodyshots is how AJ scored that victory in Dubai and brought that title home! These are exactly the tactics that allowed him to win!
sweet footwork fran you can still float around like a feather weight, impressive !! You are an excellent teacher and I love your stories and philosophies! :)
These advices definitely work, even at a beginner level during small sparring sessions, when you have to face this crazy dude who only wants to throw big punches to your face...
I love your films even though I'm an old guy 64 I like to use your stuff to keep fit and active just got myself a decent bag and go into the garden and get a sweat on the neighbours thing I'm puddled lol all the best from north wales
Excellent advice on the importance of movement. Certainly one of my flaws. I enjoyed you sharing that experience where you listened to a coach's input on an opponent. Very wise words. Unless you've seen it with your own eyes or done some homework, don't take on board what others say.
I am a krav maga instructor, but I took up boxing about 7-8 years ago to improve my striking (because krav is pretty basic in that regard). I don't claim to be a "boxer" because my striking is fairly polluted with other styles, but I'm OK. I've learnt more from watching a hand full of your videos than I have in 8 years. NOW the caveat is that it's probably taken those 7-8 years to get a base knowledge, and these are flourishes on top of that. Also my training has focussed on striking techniques rather than ring control and pure boxing tactics. Sometimes someone just has to explain something in a different way for it to click with you. You're a very good instructor / teacher.
Liked your tip, true in any sport.... Very helpful. Sorry you didn't get a chance to truly show your skills. With that in mind, you are a wiser person, coach, athlete and teacher going forward. Mr.Frans Thank you for sharing
Great work Fran. You are really one of the best boxing coaches out there on UA-cam, technics you present in your videos are world class. I don't really understand why you have so small audience. It really makes me sad. You deserve a lot more subscribers.
Fran Sands. I’ve been training in mma for the past 6 months with a focus towards boxing. The problem is that the gym I’m at right now focuses mainly on Muay Thai for standup, which includes only very simple aspects of boxing. I was wondering if you do any online coaching, like maybe I could send you some videos for you to analyze and critique? I could pay you for your time. Just wondering if your into this kinda thing.
For those going through these old posts, I'll add a fourth tip. Knockout caliber shots are not straight down the pipeline. They come from the flank, and they catch you while you are either planted on your heels or stepping forward. Occasionally they are mirror punches; a right thrown as your throw your own right, or a left thrown as your throw your own left -- you can't roll with that punch, and it lands more squarely. So the fourth tip is this... throw your rear hand AFTER the opponent throws theirs, not before. Tips one and two, throw crisp jabs and dance out of range after throwing punches, are the first half of things. The other half is what happens when the opponent gets frustrated and forces mid-range. Here is where you have to watch the opponent's body position and make sure that you don't throw your right and get caught by the opponent's right as a reply. You wait. Let them throw that rear hand, as they certainly will. As soon as they do, that's when you can more safely throw yours. When you face knockout caliber power, this is the only way to do things that isn't a huge risk. I realize this can be counter to how some boxers are taught. Typically you back off to throw a left hook over a right cross, rather than jabbing to bait the right hand and then throwing your own right. But when someone knows they hit much harder than you, especially once you frustrate them by jabbing and backing out repeatedly, they will get right in your face even to the point of being careless. Their thinking will become to take 2 punches from you to land 1 to you that does more than your 2. Most fighters, even experienced ones, are not patient people after taking crisp punches to the face for several minutes. In all the boxing matches I have ever seen, only a few champion caliber fighters were able to resist the urge to get past the jab no matter what it cost them.
great tips, and the cautionary tale was especially valuable. Thinking about getting into the Am's here in Canada and any info about the thinking/pacing of 3 round am fights is hard to find, so thanks!
My usual tactic against power punchers is "hit and run" using counters as much as possible. This kind of opponent tend to pressure, to go for you, and usually aiming the head only. So in response to that it is hit and run tactics. - keep the distance with jabs... jab and slip to the right to avoid a right follow-up. Jab the body and increase the distance - if he commits a straight right slip left and try a left hook counter (I was more confortable with liver blows coz usually iI drop my head when I slip a straight right). - if you see a right hook coming try to slip it with a pendulum and jab his face as you increase the distance moving to his back. The psychological dmg on this was really good. It makes the opponent commit even more opening more chances for good counters. If he gets mad enought he will try to turn and chase you like a bull where you can land a really good straight right while he is turning. This work coz when he gets really pised of the usual movement is he starting to move the body first towards you before recover the balance trying to catch up. You can clearly see he chasing you with his eyes over the shoulder and when you punch him in this position he can't defend himself. - Try to keep him at the center of the ring. you don't want your back touching the ropes and problaby can't pressure him to the ropes. So move around him. - If you see him stretching a jab to much trying to reach you it is a opportunity for short upper counter. When he over commit the jab usually the chin opens, they tend to incress the distance leaning the torso foward and this puts the chin in a dangerous position. Set up leaning back to evade some jabs, when he over commits istead of leaning back you do a close slip to the left and use a left short upper in his chin. A perfect timed one can lead to a KD. - And last i like to use some fake counters. you don't hit him, but if he start to believe it would hit him clean he will be over cautious and don't pressure too much. Without pressure he can't pin you down and now he is fighting in your terms and not in his, and like Dan story, he isn't fighting his fight anymore.
I'm currently 14 in a muay Thai gym. Everyone else is adults and usually I'm able to do well against them. But there's this 1 guy who is a heavyweight. He just rushes in with hard shots, even if I block them I feel it and it stuns me and I panic. I always beat myself up over losing against him but I always have to remind myself I'm 125 pounds fighting a heavyweight😂 It should be harder for me to fight him. Then after fighting him I went against a hard hitter my size and wasn't fazed at all from his shots. As always excellent video!
Yes never fear a man in any way shape or form go in and start the bout and decide for yourself what's what and then still try and win my only loss in street fighting was cause i decided to not fight back this hurt my ego and funnily enough a week later that same guy couldn't stop me when i was annihilating one of his friends and i realized i wouldve won had i thrown atleast one shot back after this i said never again and in training it's shown i will say be warry of certain things like size etc. but never ever fear a man or you lose the fight before hand.
Always love your advice fran. Could you do a video on how to pressure fight and cut off the ring please. Being smaller and with less reach than most of my opponents i have to close the distance a lot. I know it involves a lot of head movement and lateral steps which is something i try to practice as much as possible but would love to hear any advice you have even including what kind of strikes would be better to throw more often (overhands and hooks rather than long straights etc im guessing). Keep up the great work sir 👍

Wow. These things happen! In a kickboxing 'exhibition fight' in Glasgow, back in 2002, my coach told me to take it easy on the opponent as it was 'just an exhibition fight'. Well, the opponent had a different idea. I had to switch it up. At the end, he told me that he'd never before been hit so hard! Obviously the judges didn't agree as they handed the cup to their boy lol
Fran please help. Need some tips on head movement. Do you automatically move your head ie slip/roll after you’ve thrown. Or wait for a shot to come back first??? And also how do you gauge head movement? Will you do a head movement vid please. Thanks. Love your tips.
He has a good video on proactive vs reactive defense; forgot the title, however, so you may have to search through. Basically, his answer to your question is to always use your proactive defense (like slips) during your offense.
If they told me to be careful of a guy cause he hits hard id say as long as its restrained by a cup its okay but somebody enjoys their boxing a little too much.
He needs to be careful, Povetkin like most Russian fighters is tough and very smart. I reckon Joshua will take the centre of the ring and keep it long range for at least the first 4 or 5 rounds. We'll see, actually has the makings of a good scrap :-)
Fran Sands for what it's worth, I agree. Povetkin has a huge right hand, but can be caught as his last fight showed. I really enjoy your videos, please continue to educate those of us without your skill or knowledge.
+Fran Sands I felt that this would be the way to deal with Wilder`s power, keep that jab in his face and stay off the center line his right hand is really straight and central, also Ali used your method of movement to stop Cleveland Williams getting set in that amazing performance, would it be more difficult to do this with D.Wilder because of his long reach? I`ve seen him lean forwards in fights offering his head to the shorter guy, I really think the jab could bother him.
Yeah, good points Mark (especially the Ali observation against Williams...superb performance). Wilder is unorthodox, I do think that he is limited at close range so I would have that as a part of any strategy against him.
Unless a fighter has a longer reach or is taller than Wilder, the jab is the wrong way to go. Once he sets the timing for a short jab, he will come right over the top with that right. I doubt most heavyweights would risk that. I think Joshua and Fury could use an effective jab on Wilder, probably D White as well but it's likely Fury has the better distance, chin and reach to withstand Wilders power although Tyson Furys inactivity and conditioning would hurt him late in a fight if he fights Wilder within the next 9 months.
Stay outside the lead foot and check right hook and Move there's something I had to find out if your opponent can hit you with his jab that means u can hit him as well in the exchange or before the punch tbh Im a offense counter puncher I want my style to be the greatest and open my boxing one day
Hey Fran do you think as a taller heavier fighter I should fight like a tank like Anthony Joshua or just try to be elusive and smart like Canelo Alvarez. Also when do you think would be the right time to throw a big punch? Thanks, Saleem
Brilliant all across...although I don't agree with placing a head on the opponent's shoulder 'cause I know a dirty trick to pop his head back up...but I'm not sharing it.
google moroccan kickboxing championships, everyone trains to have big power and good cardio then judt charge forward the whole time.. no technique, i was a nerdy guy and all i had to do to beat everyone in the championship is : 1- have a good check hook 2- cut sharp angles fast with balance as they're coming EZ
Fran I enjoy your videos but you take WAY too long to get to the demonstration!! And make your demonstration longer , basically less standing and talking and more showing !! Thanks 💯🙏🏼🙏🏼
Yep, the same thing happened to me before a title fight for kickboxing. Everyone kept telling me he's going to come in hard and heavy and I kept waiting for it so I could counter punch him and it never happened. I end up losing a close decision. Definitely a hard lesson to learn.
I just run around the ring like a small boy being chased by Jimmy Savile.
I bet you're just a blur with that kind of motivation :-)

Thank you. Got my first fight next week. I asked my coach what we are going to do. His response was: we will do what we do. Adjustments will be made once we see what they can’t do.

There ya go. Always on the toes moving to the left and right and a constant jab works well for me.
Excellent advice on the importance of movement. Certainly one of my flaws. I enjoyed you sharing that experience where you listened to a coach's input on an opponent. Very wise words. Unless you've seen it with your own eyes or done some homework, don't take on board what others say.

I know mate, always easy to talk it. But, armed with the knowledge and with some perseverance it can pay off ;-)
