The Grunge pedal was made by DOD at the time (now by Digitech), with bass and treble labeled Butt and Face (respectively). They also made the Death Metal pedal with different, creative names for the controls (Guts, Blood, Scream, Pain, or something like that...). It was silly, but man, I miss the 90s...
The chorus and delay sound super great.I think the metal pedal is a one trick pony. It offers up what it does great, but only does that one one thing well. I hope we'll get more mini's from Ibanez in the future!
I like when both Lee and Rob play during a review it helps give a better representation or feel of whatever instrument or accessory that people are looking to buy keep up the great work guys
+MarkJohnsonMusic High output pickups sometimes do weird things to pedals, a lot of pedals (especially cheaper or mass produced ones) just don't have the headroom to deal with that loud of a signal being pushed into them. The overdrives and distortions get farty and gross, the modulation and delays get distorted and blurry.
A cool thing happened when I watched this, in deed very nice, demonstration. Just at 5:51, you play something briefly that instantly made me think of the song "One vision" by Queen. I thought: It would be nice to add the other two pedals and play that particular riff. So it felt really cool and sort of confirmative that Lee does just that at 18:27. Thanks for a nice demo and some good laughs! :)
Hey Rob.. Tell the Capt that he forgot to mention the lights on the pedals! Ibanez has made them much brighter on these small pedals as compared to the regular sized Ibanez pedals. Cheers and Heather Locklear FTW lol
guys seriously. if we're going to be able to judge a distortion pedal you need to plug it into a clean amp. you 'clean' sound, as usual, was anything but.
I'm agree with you guys, the "Super Metal" sounds like DOD American Metal or Hard Rock Distortion (FX57) or can compete with the traditional Boss DS-1. Very nice sound of your Chapman Guitar.
Super Metal seems to be quite picky about the gear. I have it in Laney Lionheart's clean channel with bright switch on. It's surprisingly low gain pedal, but you can kick it with an OD pedal to add sustain and gain. EQ is super active, it's easy to destroy the sound by using too much middle. After careful tweaking you can get nice heavy metal sound out of it. It does have kind of strange round something in the sound, but at least it's not one of those really super metal pedals that can do only one thing (badly).
Might be a bit melodramatic, but how about a quick mini amp review? orange, fender, marshall, 3 watt. Maybe something similar or better for affordable price. BTW purchased the HT5 for home use(aprox. 1 yr ago) and i'm absolutely loving it. Very nice variety of tones.
orlock20 Metal Zone sucks, but it sounds nothing like this blue thing. In his infamy, metal zone is actually metal, and you can get a black metal or an industrial tone out of it. This blue thing can give at most a stoner kinda sound.
+tockusa That Ibanez guitar was meant to sound like that for the band Periphery. It has super high output Dimarzios and the pedals aren't made for guitars like that. Yes the cap10 sounds beautiful and I really enjoy the Duncans in it, but the Ibanez puts up a pretty strong fight for what it was made for.
The original SM9 was great, 2 of the original Tube Screamer chips in it. It sounded great with gain low and eq knobs all boosted. I never liked it as a metal pedal, but excelled at a raunchy tone. I am interested in this new one, but I know it won;t sound anything like my original one.
I have that analog delay. It sounds gorgeous live. I'm still interested in that super metal pedal but need to try it out, I'm having second thoughts after their impression of it.
That metal pedal reminds me of the old little Peavey practice amps. Like DOO DOO!! The Chorus is nice though. Kinda traditional. I like the chorus Tone City has more.
my fav grunge pedal setting was the hole in the head setting that setting was really messy sounding but it cleaned up well if you used the mop control.
"dual concentric" well us with our broken old danelectro wiring diagrams called em stacked controls but then again that's when hell of a buzzword, great demo btw guys
With those "High Gain pedals" I always get the feeling that they work best on a really clean amp, because the sound is so compressed and processed that it really f***s up the input stage of the amp. It's like trying to push an apple into a bootle neck xD Just a dirty mess. Becomes all fizzy.
I like state amps clean, you increase the volume with out sacrificing the tone and get a better pure pedal sound that doesn't depend on the amp. Solid state Orange amps are pure, just pure but if you want some growl, then tube amps but I find that your pedal may change its feel.
Don't you feel the Chorus pedal a bit too bright ? Is it my ears ? I feel the Omicron mini chorus is warmer( saw ot on other videos !!!)....thanks for your answer :)
Evh 80s shred machine- blues junior- mini TS- those 3 pedals- mini crybaby- pedaltrain nano = fuck me pub rock band rig of doom. nice sounding pedals for the money. Nothing to set the world on fire but nice sounding simple and probably reliable .
"This is our bland, *clean* tone" [plays an overdriven riff] I don't think you understand what "clean" means. I hate seeing reviews like this where they put distortion pedals...on an already distorted/overdriven signal; that muddies up the pedals' sound so damn much and makes it sound like shit overall.
A JB Duncan humbucker is one of the highest output pickups Duncan makes. Maybe the blackouts, dimebucker, invader, & black winters have more that's about it though.
Its a high output pickup. Look at the Duncan website. It has more output than the Dimebucker and the same as an Invader. Its under the "high output pickups" section. I own one myself and is not a medium output.
the chorus pedal gave me the "black hole sun" feelings RiP Chris );

Gotta love the editing that goes into these videos, especially the sound effects. These videos always sound great!
Tries to get a clean tone, uses one of the highest gain amps ever made..
The chorus and delay sound super great.I think the metal pedal is a one trick pony. It offers up what it does great, but only does that one one thing well. I hope we'll get more mini's from Ibanez in the future!

pedals made by actual players, get it....its a kirk hammet thing.....(crickets)

Couldn't agree more when Chappers called the Captain a great guitarist! You're playing is awesome dude! And keep up the great work with the vids!
I wonder how many "long-haired Rob" videos are still in the pipeline :)
+jdock2 I think the long haired chappers mighta been really old
i dont play electric guitar but man i love these videos because of the editing and the funny gibberish :D
Rob and Captain, I love that the video production values have increased so much over the years that you have a Canon L lens filming the pedals. :)
The combination of the three sounds like something straight out of Surfing With The Alien. Pretty awesome throwback sounds.
I got some Def Leopard vibes from Lee's playing. Well done Captain!
Gotta admit, I just love it when Chappers speaks in Maltese. It gives me that warm fuzzy feeling ;-)
Hahaha! I love watching you guys. You have fun and that makes it so much better than just a dry review.
i like all chappers and the captain videos. ive "wasted" my life soaking in their guitar skill and knowledge. also love the captains shirt. i need one
Can we expect some Fender Bassbreaker amp demos?
I think the Cap 10 takes that metal petal way better than the Ibanez.

@@TimothyPage06 this is 100% true in my experience as an EMG user. The pedals that do take the output usually sound incredible though...
You guys are seriously OCD lol ! But extremely funny ! Those pedals are cool and that ibanez is sick ! Great video gentlemen !
Just add a phaser a wah and turn everything to 10 and you have Zach Wild tone
Don't forget the pinch harmonics
ZAKK WYLDE..I PLAYED LIVE WITH THE FIDDLE MASTER
"It's not impossible. I used to bullseye womp rats in my T-16 back home. They're not much bigger than two meters."
I was thinking about buying a metal pedal but bit anymore. Thanks for saving me the dough

I wonder if Ibanez will do a mini flanger after this. I bet a TON of people will buy that.
Turns out... they did... and, they did!
guys seriously. if we're going to be able to judge a distortion pedal you need to plug it into a clean amp. you 'clean' sound, as usual, was anything but.
nice catch, there, Cap'ain, with the "good far East"...
Love Lee's bits at the end :)
Long hair... so this is and _old_ video... ;)
I've been waiting for a demo of these pedals, awesome!
I love the that Ibanez jbm20, black and gold is a beautiful color combo imo
"I just flicked your knob off across the floor" ~Reb Chepmun
Knob Chapman*
Chorus pedal is amazing
I remember my ibanez PT5, I really like the delay and chorus.
I remember my old Peavey Triple XXX head had Hair, Body, and Bottom.
You guys should do a series on the types of pedals and their applications.
I'm agree with you guys, the "Super Metal" sounds like DOD American Metal or Hard Rock Distortion (FX57) or can compete with the traditional Boss DS-1. Very nice sound of your Chapman Guitar.
the metal pedal sounds, GREAT! when it's turned off
Sweet pedals guys! Are you guys going to do a review of the Ibanez talman series?
Super Metal seems to be quite picky about the gear. I have it in Laney Lionheart's clean channel with bright switch on. It's surprisingly low gain pedal, but you can kick it with an OD pedal to add sustain and gain. EQ is super active, it's easy to destroy the sound by using too much middle. True, however... It depends, if you're looking for a pure 80s rock guitar feel, so far this is the closest I know.
what about IBANEZ CHORUS MINI compared to TC corona chorus mini ?? which do you think is better ? thanx
Might be a bit melodramatic, but how about a quick mini amp review? orange, fender, marshall, 3 watt. Maybe something similar or better for affordable price. BTW purchased the HT5 for home use(aprox. 1 yr ago) and i'm absolutely loving it. Very nice variety of tones.
the cap10 slayed :)
Holier Than Thou!!!!!
Super Metal sucks, or at least they picked the wrong name.
+ChristianIce I believe that one is a clone pedal. There is a host of "metal" pedals, such as the Metal Zone, that sound like that pedal.
orlock20
Metal Zone sucks, but it sounds nothing like this blue thing.
In his infamy, metal zone is actually metal, and you can get a black metal or an industrial tone out of it.
This blue thing can give at most a stoner kinda sound.
+ChristianIce Metal Zone can do a Sabbath tone too~
+ChristianIce For me, metalzone is just good in your own room. To play live is a superbee that disappear on stage.
+Dhiego Lucio This is the most accurate analysis I've heard about the Metal Zone.
What a priceless moment when chappers just flicks off the captains razor switch off his guitar. I just started laughing my ass off
God that initial guitar sounds terrible. I think that Ibanez was a bigger bottleneck than the amp/pedals. The cap10 DESTROYED it.
Not sure if anyone said anything but the quote is "Just like Beggar's Canyon back home"
When Lee plays, I hear the Van Hagar-era sound.
i almost expected rob to "shwing" when lee mentioned heather locklear haha
The original SM9 was great, 2 of the original Tube Screamer chips in it. It sounded great with gain low and eq knobs all boosted. I never liked it as a metal pedal, but excelled at a raunchy tone. I am interested in this new one, but I know it won;t sound anything like my original one.
By the way, DOD was the company that had all the crazy names for their pedal dials like Freeze, Juice, Death, and Butt.
(The end part of the video) Reminded me a lot of Paul Gilbert's tone on Get Out of My Yard!
I...I...I need that shirt. My body needs that shirt!!
I think it'd be cool if rob did a video of all the pedals he likes in descending order
Good effort on the maltese rob :)
That chorus sounds pretty decent.
Lee is a great player.
I have that analog delay. It sounds gorgeous live. I'm still interested in that super metal pedal but need to try it out, I'm having second thoughts after their impression of it.
It depends, if you're looking for a pure 80s rock guitar feel, so far this is the closest I know.

Damn! It's not even April Fools Day till tomorrow and I hears Lee ask for "More gain" on his Super Metal pedal....holy shit, Batman!
my fav grunge pedal setting was the hole in the head setting that setting was really messy sounding but it cleaned up well if you used the mop control.
....dude, those 5150's...beautiful...
EVH 5150 III I think they are
Man Rob's hair grows back fast.
5:36 may the fuzz be with you...always 🖖
Rob's neck pup looks like it's about to drop into the cavity, is that a particularly powerful pup?
the 'dual concentric' knobs I've normally heard just called 'stacked pots'
ooh Rob's learned the claw!😉 love the delay pedal but not the metal pedal just something I can't put my finger on?
The combination of all pedals reminded me an EVH kind of tone
I'm really not big on the Super Metal. As you guys said, it's raspy. I prefer something a lot punchier. it definitely has it's uses though.
6:38 exactly what Rob's saying here, "it's more of a lead pedal than a rhythm pedal"
"dual concentric" well us with our broken old danelectro wiring diagrams called em stacked controls but then again that's when hell of a buzzword, great demo btw guys
+Disc147 Man that chorus is actually pretty killer
that's a nice looking ibanez
The Super Metal sounds more like High Gain Blues Based Hard Rock Guitar Hero, but that prolly won't fit on the case.
the super metal pedal sounded awful ran through the ibanez guitar sounded way better through the chapman
i just can't wait to see a video with Rob with his hair cut... this videos are filmed i while ago...
The Captain rocks at guitar! Why so serious Cap?
Hey Rob, any tips on practicing hybrid picking? Any tips on starting?
The super metal pedal sounds really grungy. Everytime I hear it I think of Negative Creep from Bleach.
+Dala Pojken I was thinking the same thing
Hey Rob, is your guitar tone inspired by Joe Satriani. Something about your playing reminds me a lot of Joe Satriani.
probably should've brought in an amp with an actual clean channel
Or a guitar with less high output pickups.
That jab at Kirk was pretty great. While his statement was pretty ignorant his pedals do at least sound really good.
What pickups, including the SH4, is the captain using? It's sounds sooooo good!!! :)
Lmao I think you guys just came up with Ibanezs' next ad campaign..."Ibanez...it's less stupid" 😂
Should have dug out an Ibanez mini tube screamer to put in the chain, just to see if it makes a good set, otherwise solid video.
God Bless da Queen! \m/
With those "High Gain pedals" I always get the feeling that they work best on a really clean amp, because the sound is so compressed and processed that it really f***s up the input stage of the amp. It's like trying to push an apple into a bootle neck xD Just a dirty mess. Becomes all fizzy.

"Here's the clean sound", doesn't sound clean lol.
I think Rob has been hanging around with Christian praise and worship guitarists with all those swells haha!
loud, low, high, grunge for the digiCrap pedal
loud, low, high, and grunge where the knobs on the grunge pedal.
Love the cock rock cameo......Who's idea was it to blackout Chappers highlight the Captain???? That was so classic !! 😉
Got a little tube screamer and it's my favourite pedal
I agree, Lee, Girth is probably the worst replacement term. lol
"This is our bland, *clean* tone" [plays an overdriven riff]
I don't think you understand what "clean" means.
Jb is between medium and high output in terms of pickups in general
Its a high output pickup. Look at the Duncan website. It has more output than the Dimebucker and the same as an Invader. Its under the "high output pickups" section. I own one myself and is not a medium output.
+buzzsaw63 that's in relation to as pickups. There are plenty of pickups that are way higher output.
+Droid96 sd not as. Thanks auto correct
you can start a sludge or black metal band with a super metal pedal
sounds like randy rhoads....please do this one his sound is amazing and shredder heaven!!
hey Rob, when are you going to post the vid with the peavey and that new chapman??
