This guy gave me guitar lessons back in the eighties. I went on to record two albums n various radio stuff. He teachings served me well. So cheers Nick!!!!
Treble booster has consistently been my favorite solution. It fattens up whatever frequency you set the range to and it doesn’t add any unwanted frequency’s.
Addicted to buying OD's... There arent many that are "bad' and they all have their own flavor... One of my absolute favorite parts of being a high-gain player... 🤘
Nick Bowcott’s likeness should be used whenever or where ever heavy metal is spoken or displayed. I’ve never seen anyone so faithful and positive towards a cause. You are the coolest Mr Nick. Don’t let those Hoosiers up there make fun of you because you talk funny. By the way, there is a button in iMovie your guys can engage to turn you around so your not playing backwards and your guitars are not upside down anymore.
Thanks for the advice. I use A compressor as the first pedal to my guitar rig. I modified my distortion boost pedal and connected it directly to a toy microphone from a separate amp which creates a heavy distorted vintage tube amp echo effects after cutting out the microphone noise and boosting the first amp.
Riff master in his own right. The guitar sound on Grim Reapers See you in Hell is Huge. I still remember the first time that song was played on MTV, might have been the heaviest sounding thing i ever heard or that they had played up until that. Ozzy for sure had videos out, possibly Queensryche and Maiden but mostly it was like Def Leppard, Quiet Riot etc. See in you Hell was almost like Death Metal heavy in comparison, especially to the average 13 year old kid armed with a tennis racket air guitaring around the living room like a maniac :D That album was pretty much a direct conduit for me into Slayer Metallica Anthrax SOD etc shortly thereafter. \m/\m/
Watching Nick do a Sweetwater vid is like watching Dan Erlewine do a StewMac vid. A master craftsman sharing his knowledge and talent. Nick was awesome in Grim Reaper in the mid 80's and now he's awesome at Sweetwater in 2019. \m/
It is not fair to directly compare sounds with pedal OFF and ON, though. For example: the tube screamer boosts your sound, but you can have a boosted sound increasing the gain and/or volume of your amp as well. A fair comparison could be tube screamer on versus tube screamer off but a little more gain/volume on the amp settings. Let's see if I really need it or I can just set my amp in a different way
I pretty much have every amp in a box out there. My favorite is the Lovepedal Purple Plexi Old School Build. It's absolutely amazing. It stacks well with any OD pedal as well. As far as hitting the front end of an amp nothing beats the Fortin pedals (33, GRIND, etc.). They make my EVH sound amazing!
I have to admit as a hard rock player I used high gain amps like the Orange Dark Terror but I rarely pushed the gain past noon. I would use an overdrive with the drive set very low to pretty much tighten up the sound. Now I am running the Helix with a Friedman Brown Eye preset and I use the gain at a mere 2. Right in front of it is a tubescreamer model with again the gain set low. You'd be surprised how heavy that can wind up sounding and far more controllable than just a regular amp with the gain on ten.
AWESOME video Nick...Sweetwater is lucky to have you and so are WE.....THIS IS BY far the BEST informative video ....love Sweetwater....Lindset Becker ext 1674.....rock on!!!!!!
Very cool, man! THANK YOU! I have a Vox AC 30 (bass and treble at noon, gain very low, a touch of amp reverb), with a Boss Cmp/Sust, then a Vox Wah, a tumnus for boost, then a DS-1, a JHS Bonsai (any setting but on TS 9 mostly), then a Galileo (Brian May pedal) . I have all these, through the front of the amp, Then ‘sent and received’ the Boss EQ, Boss NS-2 (on full), then ambient pedal, delay, & reverb at end of chain. I wanted a B May sound but am in treble hell (irony? ) Lol ... I have the smile on the EQ. I’m just about to pull my hair out. Lol I tried a Blues Driver and a Danelectro Metal pedal in place of the aforementioned OD’s now in, to see if a change, but still high end crazy. I have good cables so checked that box, but I’m in over my head. My tone sucks and I don’t get it. Im guessing I’m bypassing the kids and that’s doing it. It just has no balls at all. Lol This helped me a lot, mate. Thanks so much. I probably deserve need a Iil amp and one overdrive. Lol I’ll be looking for more of ya, mate! Cheers.
Great video, good information. Get your practice amp, turn the gain down and stick a tube screamer in front of it to drive some great metal tones. Behringer do an excellent one for pocket change....sings with my hotrailed strat.
4:12 Can NOT be understated. I play hard rock and love tones from the 70s (and some of the 80s like Appetite for Destruction), and I never thought to back off my Marshall and start hitting it with pedals until roughly 15 years into playing. Mind you, you don't need a ton of pedals to get incredibly thick saturation of them with your amp, but when you do start doing this, you'll see your tone take on a whole new form.
Come on Nick. Admit it. We all know you just played Eruption on that guitar right before you filmed this. 😀 Seriously though, excellent stuff you and Sweetwater are doing.
He’s not wrong. My main head is a Marshall TSL 100. High gain amp, but I tend to back off the gain and use a couple different OD pedals depending on what I want. Sometimes I use a plain ol’ Boss SD-1. Most of the time I’m on my Zakk Wylde Berzerker OD pedal.
I have the same tsl. Can you share some settings on the head? I'm really looking to have one channel be 80s hairband. One channel early metallica crunch and the clean channel clean metallica like the ajfa album. Been tweeking and I'm getting close. I'm going to try to bump the front end with a meta zone. Also going to try bumping it with my compressor. Any advice would be appreciated. Cheers
I play punk and i like to have a “looser” tone that feels more washy and full. All down to personal taste though, some people want the in your face tone that a boost gives you
Grim Reaper is and was thee shit...I love them and MR. NICK BOWCOTT IS ONE OF MY FABORITE GUUTARISTS AND A RIFF MONSTER BACK IN TH DAY.STEVE GRIMMETT IS AWESOME TOO THO
Hi Jeco, thanks for your message, hope you’re well and safe. Regarding your example, the mid focus of the Tube Screamer was an asset for amps with loose low end response (think Rectifier). A modern high gain distortion pedal won’t have the same response character as a tube amp, so adding another pedal may not be needed. That said, there are tons of great sounds to be found by cascading one pedal into another. You lose nothing by trying! Please contact us direct with other questions as you have them! When using any of the aforementioned pedals to goose the front end of an amp do you put the eq's at noon on the amp and then set your tone from the pedal ?

The TS9 is not bad, but you know ~ i find the BOSS GE-7 or MXR 6-Band Graphics EQ's does what the TS9 can do & MORE !

Well said Nick. I front end amps, in the analog and digital world, all the time.
You rock Curley....
I love how he says he is Mitch Gallagher if you don't like it
🤘
Hi Nick!
Been a very long time!
Great video, funny and informative - thanks Nick!
This video totally makes sense
I have an EQ that sounds different than all I have used. It gives me awesome crunch.
What a great video! Thank you!
Probably one of the BEST Sweetwater videos I've seen....Nick Rocks!!

This should be common knowledge for any metal player by now.
Good advice. I really don’t like the scooped sound, and I’m glad you are showing that mids are important. I have the EVH pedal and it’s great.
Nick is the man!
Howd i miss this gem?
Ibanez Tube Screamer settings you used in this demo?
Great overview, and yeah, you cracked me up.
Excellent advices. Above all, no smiles ...
Does it work the same with high gain distortion pedal?
Front ending it with an overdrive, say the tube screamer?

Nick! That last riff and tone was mean and dirty!
Do you know what pedal did he use for that one?
@@maspesasmasperras5554 Not sure, maybe still using the TS-9??
Love this !
So is this the only pedal that goes to 11?
why didn't you play see you in hell riff
I don't like that trebly Tube Screamer sound. Maybe it's good to make leads cut through, but I prefer a bassier rhythm tone for metal.
When using any of the aforementioned pedals to goose the front end of an amp do you put the eq's at noon on the amp and then set your tone from the pedal ?
Nah get it as good as you can on the amp and then click the pedal to push it into the stratosphere
Do i need a noise gate
thank you
Thanks fellow Lefty!
But slayer makes me smile 🤠
So there’s no right answer?
Just personal preference?
Always what I have went by.
good info, here...
Grim Reaper glorious metal.
Is it worth it to boost an amp in a box pedal with the echoplex ??
Yes! Stacking drive pedals is a good thing.
I came here because I chain an Eyemaster and Fangs together 😭
Lolol
That must be chaotically pleasing, are you using the Fangs in its scoop mode?
How does it sound? I've been thinking if doing this very thing but don't want to buy a fangs pedal unless it will stack well
what good pedal to stack with my mxr evh5150 od pedal? I want more tight metal sound for solos
I use an sd-1.
@@HIGHTOP203 do you use an sd1 with a mxr 5150 od pedal? What is your knobs configuration in both pedals?
