Disney's biggest problem nowadays is that they try so hard to pander to so many demographics, instead of focusing on making a great movie. That's why phase 4 of the MCU has been mid, especially the TV shows

Their approach to diversity is very checklisty, and it comes across as pandering… diversity means that their overall portfolio of movies should be diverse… but not every movie needs to be a perfect vertical slice of diversity. You can have movies primarily focusing on one identity factor, and movies that are more intersectional.
This isn’t necessarily always true…I personally loved Encanto and they pulled off the generational trauma story quite well and the diversity felt quite organic. Raya on the other hand was much less diverse within its own world and it floundered. At the end of the day, story should be top priority. If you have a good story that truly resonates, it doesn’t matter as much what identities one’s characters embody.
Also thought the flirting with Diazo was kind of cringe.

Since I brought up Raya, Strange World comes to mind as yet another example where the world building overshadowed the story… so much creativity went into the Avalonia city, and wish we had spent more time in it. Strange World and Raya should have been series…. Spending an episode in one location focusing on a few characters at a time, but both movies felt bloated with too many characters and too many substories…

    • @gaf407
      @gaf407 Рік тому +58

Also: not sure how diverse ethnicities even make sense in Avalonia…
      1. UNLESS humans are not from Avalonia and found themselves there through however the fuck, Avalonia is not big enough for humans to evolve such a wide range of phenotypes (ethnic diversity)
      2. Given how long they are implied to have been in that valley… assuming time immemorial given NOBODY remembers humanity before being on a giant turtle, one would expect whatever diversity there was would have mixed to the point where they’d be homogenous AND endogamous. It’s like the Human Zoo from Steven Universe… 5000 years of captivity in an alien space station and the population of humans was still visually diverse. Made no sense.

I use to be defensive about phase 4 cause how they making the formula and the creativity different from other phases however then I realized after she hulk, they probably didn’t really have a plan for a the story or what it’s gonna set up specially for the multiverse, cause I’m still trying the process the whole situation about the multiverse.

My favorites were Teen Beach movie and Enchanted because they were so self aware with those dumb old classics (sorry, I'm a 2000s girl here and I wasn't a Disney kid) and they were kind of making fun of the stereotypes from the old Disney movies (examples like, everyone singing, and the villains being characters you just wanted to punch)

My kids didn't ask to be born, nor did I. If I pproject my trauma onto them that ain't their fault, it's mine. And in turn it wasn't my fault my parents projected theirs onto me, it was theirs.
With time you learn that people who don't recognize their mistakes, or who are a bit too egotistical to do so, seem to be the more troubled ones. I've found great peace in apologizing, recognizing and working with my loved ones to be better.

The main flaw I found was how utterly childish this movie was.
I remember loving Encanto exactly because of how bleak it could be. It had moments of silence, pain, character exploration, subtlety, symbolism and just plain grief. Even more so with Moana: I cried during the reprise.
Some of my favorite Disney movies growing up - The Rescuers, Hercules, Robin Hood, Snow White, MULAN - had similar situations. They could be funny, they could be downright hilarious, but they had moments of grandeur, dread, solemnity and pain to balance it out.
People have remembered Disney for being a heart-tugger since day one: I found none of this in Strange World. It’s an endless barrage of slapstick, screaming, slipping, weird creatures being weird, over the top reactions, chase scenes and yammering. Even when it looks as if they failed to save the world it’s not explored enough.
This doesn’t feel like a Disney movie. This feels like a Blue Sky movie during their dark age - and even then, there’s more emotion in the scene in Rio where they show the favelas (just for the guts of a kids’ movie going there) than in any moment of Strange World.
The hideous character designs (mostly on the men, Meridian looks cute), Searcher’s lack of charisma being paired with Jaeger’s at time downright cruel behavior and the sporadic jabs at dark humor that don’t fit (one of the explorers DIED, did no one address this?), as well as the immature humor of Splat, which I hated, didn’t help the case.
Also the gay couple was fine and casual and respected but can’t hold a candle to the great Disney romances. They didn’t even try to give us queers something to bite.

i think strange world’s problem is it wants to say something, without really having anything to say. Encanto had a strong thesis about intergenerational trauma and took a very realistic look at high expectations from family, similarly Turning Red covered those as well as the conflict between modern individualism and traditional values, both movies having Colombian and Chinese culture respectively deeply ingrained into them too. both of these movies clearly had a driving passion to tell the story they did, while strange world feels like the sort of plot i might cobble together from nothing cause a 1-hour creative writing test question needed me to.

I beg of you to put Treasure Planet on your watch list, it’s one of Disney’s biggest animation failures because my god it was done so dirty. It deals with generational trauma so freaking well, and it’s actually a fun action adventure film that kids and adults love.
It was a passion project for the producers (the same producers of The little mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules, Moana, and many more classics) for over 20 years and when it was finally finished it was flipped on its back and shoved off a mountain by the marketing team so they had concrete proof that it was time to cut 2D animation (and it worked, they finished the other two 2D films they were working on at the time then didn’t go back to it).
Treasure Planet is everything strange world tried to be, the crazy space-pirate-alien-steampunk-cyberpunk world seems so believable yet bizarre and the characters make the movie as amazing as it is with a villain “type” that I’ve never seen in another movie, and Treasure Planet came out 20 years ago! Not to mention the story may not be as well developed or fascinating. Disney is producing too much too quickly nowadays. They should start taking their time with projects. I honestly wanted RATLD to succeed and I was thoroughly disappointed once I saw that movie. I can’t even begin to bring myself to see it again. Its opening line spoken by Kelly Marie-Tran is ripped straight from the Tom Selleck insurance ads of the late 2010s: “I know what you’re thinking.” “Encanto” wasn’t interesting enough for me so I didn’t see it and it’s well touted musical number couldn’t bring me any closer to watch it. As for “Strange World” the politics didn’t drive me away from the film it was the blandness as I saw from the trailers which were released around August and September and readily spammed across UA-cam.

YES! I will argue this until the day I die. As an animator, myself, part of the art is the very subtle choppiness. It adds character. I think that the lack of perfect fluidity is a large part of why it's so unique. When I saw the animation for _Strange World,_ I was impressed, but weirded out. It feels like when someone takes a person (with a perfectly good voice) singing and adds 6 layers of autotune. It's off-putting. It feels unnatural, and it ruins the art of the piece.

The concept of the turtle having “life/universe” on its back it’s a mythical aspect of many cultures (like Hindu) so I found it pretty cool to be put into some cartoon tbh. And that’s also why I can’t find myself agreeing with the aesthetic of the strange world. As you said, Avatar’s forest, for how weird it is, can still be recognized as a forest, but the strange world is not an environmental habitat, it’s the internal organs of an animal. Regarding your point, though, about Disney animations being more for adults: I believe that was totally true for Turning Red (which I love, even as a 68-year-old man). I believe Turning Red was aimed directly at Millennials who were early teens in the early 2000s and whose children are just about to enter their own teen years. The theme of Lightyear, learning to accept failure and live in the moment...is for adults. But Lightyear lacks the comedic action and music that Turning Red used effectively to maintain the interest of children.

EDIT: Dreamworks knocked it out of the park with Puss in Boots The Last Wish in terms of making it enjoyable for children but also having very meaningful messages for adult viewers. That movie took some big risks and they payed off, including not being afraid to really go there and put very scary imagery for children to make the villain really feel intimidating and serious. Disney is way too corporate now to take those big risks and it's all just soulless cash grabs or a real artistic vision. They need to let their artists and creators off the leash and take risks if they want to make good movies again, a second Disney Renaissance if you will.

The floating things in streams eating globs and turning red is red blood cells transporting oxygen. The trees are alvioli exchanging oxygen and carbon dioxide (breathing) the big globe that attack ate macrophages trying to eat invading foreign bodies. And the turtle wasn’t sick and causing the plants to die, the plants were actually an infection that was poisoning and killing the turtle. We noticed how the things inside of the strange world are like organs and bllod cells and things like that, so for us the strange world made more sence cause we saw the simularitys to the real insides of a body. I think it's great that Disney also did a movie that is not targeted towards kids in the main focus. Animation is for everyone, so it's good that they didn't only had kids in mind. And the reason the movie wasn't successful was also cause Disney didn't even promote it, they gave the movie a Treasur Planet treatment... Regardless of whether or not this film did its world justice, I do think there is value in having fantasy worlds that explore surrealism and things that are disconnected from reality, whether that be in films, animation, games, etc. I think a lot of the fantastical elements are quite fun, and if supported with the proper story, can be really good, but surrealism can certainly be challenging to pull off at times.

I think it was hinted well enough that the energy plant was a big bad. Unless by twist you mean the turtle, in which case, I think it's pretty obvious in retrospect (just looking at the imagery). Not only that, but it seemed so inconsequential to the characters. I mean, the Jager Clade simply walks away in the beginning and 25 years later, Searcher just doesn't seem too phased by it, having moved on and started a family.
I just didn't have the respect for the whole father/son dynamic as I did for it in "Finding Nemo" or "The Lion King" or even (going outside of Disney) "Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs."

If you want a movie with a really wholesome father/son dynamic, "Barnyard" is a cult classic (from the 2000s, and it's a paramount movie, and "Rock Dog" is an adorable Tibetan-American movie about a dog that goes after his dream of becoming a rock star instead of a sheep protector.

Omg thank you. What’s so upsetting is Jaeger is supposed to be wrong in that beginning, immediately after he:
      1. Saved Searcher’s life
      2. Trained his team to do a very specific job for the community which was to find what’s over the mountain
I first thought they were portraying Jaeger as a GOOD father; he takes his son adventuring with him, asks if he’s ok or too tired to go on, and has a positive demeanor throughout all the obstacles.
But then there’s this random fight between him and Searcher because Searcher wants to look at a plant? No tension had been set up between that for that situation to escalate like that. And THEN, Jaeger’s entire team sides with Searcher, a child??
It was so inauthentic and rotten story-telling. It made me sad for Jaeger and I went in thinking they were the bad guys for letting him walk away alone.
Searcher is a cry baby, and is only after his own interests and to me, THAT is bad parenting. This should’ve been an Ethan/Jaeger buddy movie. Searcher was the villain in my book.

@@Jules2439.5 another thing is that folks like to talk about the whole "gay agenda" but the problem is that the gay character's love interest wasn't central to the plot. You could literally remove that character and it wouldn't change the movie in a meaningful way. Now, there could have been a way for Disney to have a gay agenda but they don't dare do this; what if the story centered around Ethan Clade and his interest in the game 'Quality Culture?' What if the "Strange World" was a sort of representation of him going into the world of the game and that is where he meets his gay love interest. A native of the world. Could Disney have made the audience like the gay love interest and become emotionally invested in the mission to protect the world? Who knows.

How did Diazo know that Ethan was a searcher rather than a farmer? Maybe have a sequence of them playing the game as childhood friends with Ethan being gifted at the exploring aspects of the game and Diazo loving him for it. We get no back story as to why they like each other. Diazo quite literally drops in for 2 seconds with their friends and leaves with barely any context or exposition as to why. Yes, he’s telling us Ethan is a searcher but SHOW US why.

This isn't to say of course, that I wouldn't want to see gay characters in movies...but let them have a GOOD story, don't just shoehorn them into things to check a box, or make their sexuality the focal point of their entire character. There's nothing different between a gay person or a straight or whatever, and it's like...these companies are incapable of writing anything decent that features them, because they treat the characters as if they're in fact 'different' from the start...and they're not.

Every creature, every “biome” in the strange world, is representative to an actual body; the streams of those little flying fish type things is actually the blood stream, the reapers and splat’s kind are parts of the immune system, the soft outer biome is the skin, and as explained, the windy biome was the lungs, acid ocean was the stomach, and the heart - self explanatory. The ENTIRE movie is a representation of how humans and our inventions/discoveries are killing the world. It’s not the best movie ever, but the art and portrayal of everything is pretty cool

The twist and your confusion of the forest are pretty tied together. It was pretty clear to me from the onset that it was going to be the inside of some sort of giant lifeform just because the animations and character designs reminded me alot of educational specials and being inside the body.
Don't get me wrong though it did still confuse me a few times on how the scale of the world worked and how crossing the mountains could be such a big deal when we finally see the relative size of the world. Still several areas reminded me of children's animations where we see moving fibers inside the lungs and the stomach being a dangerous acid area made since in retrospect. I dunno maybe I just remember Magic Schoolbus a bit too well lol.
The movie was fairly mediocre I don't know if I agree with all of your reasons or not. I think maybe a focus could've helped though what I would've wanted for an action piece wouldn't really be Disney. For me I've mostly always found Disney to be on the tame bland side so it makes it trickier to say what would make it work better, usually I'd say songs but I don't think every Disney film needs to be a musical.
You mixed Pixar in with Disney films and they're theoretically supposed to be separate brands. I think traditionally Pixar is more character/emotions based which fits for some of the slower character talky moments. Disney used to be mostly fairytales but they have broken from that several times so I really don't know.
I have a fear of complaining too much when Disney feels very focus group produced anyways, I don't want them to learn not to try things I wish they'd let the animators and writers choose more projects even if they fail. I just love weirdness. Which is why I suppose Strange World disappointed me, it wasn't even weird enough as a failure.

I have to agree that it wasn't amazing from a story perspective. There are definitely many reused tropes, and i agree there!
However, I think I liked it a bit more than you did (based on the way i understand this video). I think the reason I may have liked it a bit more is that I started to suspect that they were in something's immune system pretty early... the first time the river of blood cells showed up, I said to my daughter, "That reminds me of a circulatory system" and after that i started to notice that the scary killer things resembled immune system killer cells, and the little blue blob guy is an immune system scout cell... once I was on to that, I remembered that to get into this area, they punched through a barrier that was probably the skin. After that, I just kept seeing all the similarities... and my daughter was frustrated that I was pointing them out! So when the plot twist showed they were inside an animal and that this was all the different bodily functions, I felt vindicated and not at all like it came from left field.
I know this movie wasn't your favorite... but if you ever re-watch it, keeping this in mine, you will see that it's not out of left field at all. From the moment they punch through the skin, these are all normal bodily functions that exist inside most (if not all) mammals. It's not out of left field except that they don't tell you what it is until much later when the characters figure it out.

Not only do you point out the flaws, you also give credit when something positive is done despite how difficult it is to view a bad piece of media as having a redeemable quality. Looking forward to view the rest of your catalog.
Regarding the movie, the lack of cohesion and recycling of plot tropes are not the main issues. It's the delivery that bothers me about this film. Chaotic films and recycled plots CAN be done good, but that's because there's a narrative WITHIN the chaotic mess, and something new is done with the plot trope itself. How about make a sibling rivalry instead of parent-child disagreement? Damn, why not make it child VS parent and one of them has to go? How about the dread of dealing with relatives that directly contribute to a character's demise? Encanto did this and look how well it did. Or maybe even just spousal conflicts that threaten the relationship and maybe it ultimately does? I wanna see THAT, not the overdone "dad/mom doesn't like what I do so imma rebel" plot. Also, When viewers are left confused and bored of the story, the film company has failed to deliver a message and make good movie and/or good plot

All this and we still don’t have an African Disney. Or a black ANIMATED Disney princess who want an animal for like 85 % of the movie

Yeah, this movie looks like all the ideas ended up on paper but never got revised enough to make a good story. Also, I dislike how unappealing the art direction and character design is.

I think you're right that Disney is out of ideas. Just look at the Elemental movie trailer.

Disney remakes have been dividing a lot of fans however I was hoping that wouldn’t be the same for animation but after raya and the last dragon including other animated movies made worried about the future of Disney animation. God I miss the golden age of Disney animation

As someone who loves Turning Red for these same reasons but didn't feel the dad/son thing in Strange. I get where there should be wider spectrum for different demos of Disney kids.

    OMG THEY PLAGIARIZED WINX
Ok, maybe not plagerized, but there’s a show called winx that had the same cast concept of the plants are dying but it’s arcusully a giant turtle island.

The planet dying is a common trope in recent writing in general and the idea of the world being on the back of a giant turtle is as ancient as humanity itself. Many, many cultures around the globe, in their mythologies, explain the Earth as being on the back of a turtle.

While I agree with basically the rest of the video, I think that at 6:43 it can be seen as familiar because it is just anatomy. As soon as we saw the creatures on the inside i was able to understand that we we in lungs. However this requires an understanding of anatomy that not everyone has and they didn’t execute it the best. Further supporting your idea that it was meant more for Disney adults. The turtle carrying the wold is also a very popular world wide mythos thing that is seen across cultures. Otherwise great video!
