      I think a cool scenario would launching all Kinzhals produced at a combined Patriot and NASAMS with a carrier group defending a port would be cool if they could catch them. You could add other cruise missiles to add difficulty

    • @bekeneel
      @bekeneel Рік тому

      @@Mystical922 I think Nasams can't even defend to ballistic missiles, so ye hypersonic won't either. It's hard to make a realistic simulation since who knows how good this missile is? Or how accurate? It might be defendable tho with supersonic sam systems, since even hypersonic missiles aren't hypersonic full trajectory. Ideally would be to have pac3 & thaad to defend, or aegis perhaps.

      @@bekeneel radar is linked together should provide a better radar picture than a single Patriot battery plus if the NASAMS is at the target location it could possibly intercept if it’s let’s say to the right of the target by 10 km it probably wouldn’t do anything but I’m not sure if IBCS is modeled in DCS. Aegis and PAC-3 and THAAD would be ideal

      Why not use irisT SLM instead of SLS? Better. The plasma created from hypersonic missile tho supposedly makes it "stealth" for radars, tho ur right it's not exactly invisible if you have the right detection/tracking methods.

      @@ColdBloodedAddictions hahahahahahahahahahahahaha, if definately didnt, as Ukraine only has 2 Patriots and only 3 Kinzhals have been fired at the Patriot. Of those 2 Patriots, arguably one was shot down (though it was most likely a shot down Iskander, or the shot down Kinzhal from the days before the May 16th attack. But the most likely case was that after the initial saturation attack, 2 Kinzhals made it through, with one missile missing the site completely and the other either directly hitting or hitting near one component of the Patriot battery. Which resulted in it either being lightly/heavily damaged or destroyed, though the component being destroyed is unlikely as it was operation and engaging aerial threats/missiles only a couple days after.

    also it would be fully intigrated to the air defence system so the IRIS-T SL would know about the incoming Kinzhal befor i could see them but i get that is not what this war game is about and DCS could probably not handel 100+ sam batterys to moddel a countrys air deference system but i would be really cool

    Flares don't work against IRIS-T. It has a very special seeker that uses a rotating senser with a slit and uses radar on approach. It can identify targets and is so precise that it goes for their weak spots and not their hottest spot. It can turn 180 degrees, acquire targets after being fired and also does home on jam. If you are a pilot tracked by an IRIS-T you are basically dead, except if you counter it with an IRIS-T maybe.
    And they are also comparatively cheap, they cost Germany just around 400.000€ per piece including development.

    The tail section might just be for drag reduction in the the cruise or possibly to ensure good stability until the engine lights and pushes the missle supersonic, the X-15 used a blunt tail for hypersonic stability. A blunt tail is very high drag compared to a cone, so in the cruise nice to have the cone. Having the misses fly right at the SAMs really advantages the SAMs. A more likely scenario is that the missiles just fly through part of a SAMs engagement area on the way to another target, that really limits the intercept as the interceptor has to catch up, in this case with a missile that is faster than the interceptor. If you set up these attacks as fly past at say 5-10nm rather than fly over its more indicative of the usual situation. Also the whole melting thing was solved in the 60s with X-15, they use nickel alloys, similar to jet turbine blades, Inconel in the case of X-15 if I recall. In the case of this missile its a solid rocket booster, to regenerative cooling with fuel is not possible.

  • @timbaskett6299
    @timbaskett6299 Рік тому

    Those tailcones could serve the same purpose as a boat tail on a rifle bullet, reduced drag on the missile and the carrying aircraft. I'm curious of a tracked AAA using a GAU-8/A would make a worthy "CWIS" against a hypersonic missile. @@adamtheninjasmith2985 I too don't think that it's able to retain a hypersonic speed during maneuvers. However, the Russians did state that it does at least cruise towards its objective at a hypersonic speed.
      I also went on to verify a unique piece of footage capturing the Kinzhal mid-flight over Ukrainian territory, at a "low" altitude straight and level trajectory. The footage comes from the earlier months of the war, when Russia was testing/flexing all its PGWs. I think they fired a total of like 2-4 Kinzhals during those days. Here's the title of a video containing this footage (first few seconds):
      "Kh-47M2 Kinzhal - first ever footage in flight. Ukraine war, 18 March 2022."
      Now in terms of the verification procedure: In supersonic, compressible fluid flow, an object in relative motion with a fluid, from a macroscopic (zoomed out) perspective, "tears" the fluid apart in 2 domains: one where the fluid is completely undisturbed (the information of the object-fluid interaction hasn't reached there yet) and another one where the fluid is disturbed (the information has managed to reach all the points in that domain). These two "seam" together very far away from the object, but we don't care about that in this case. The "disturbed" domain is conical in shape (often refereed to as a "Mach cone" ) and so is the boundary surface separating the 2 domains (the so called "shock wave").
      The angle between the axis and the surface of the cone (the so called "Mach angle"), obeys the following equation:
      sin(mu) = a / v = 1 / M
      Where "mu" is the Mach angle, "v" is the relative velocity between the object and the fluid medium, "a" is the speed of sound within that fluid medium (e.g. 343m/s for air @ sea level and 20 deg Celsius) and "M" ( = v/a ) is the so called "Mach number" (a unitless measure of velocity using the fluid's speed of sound as reference. It's what we actually refer to when were counting Machs).
      You can see that if we know either mu or M we can find the other one in a heartbeat. And so it begins:
      Observation:
      From the video, we observe that at the instant when the sonic boom starts to be audible (denoting that the camera has been just hit by the shock wave and is entering the very disturbed domain of the Mach cone generated by the Kinzhal), the angle between the ground and the LOS from the camera to the Kinzhal is extremely oblique, at around 5 degrees (correct me if you see something different).
      Educated assumption:
      As stated earlier, we assume a *straight, level* flight (footage visually backs this up and so does the published Russian data).
      Application of elements of geometry theory:
      With the assumption of level flight, the trajectory of the missile is parallel to the ground, and thus the Mach angle and the angle we just tried to eyeball, are equal to each other, as alternate interior angles (in the system of the 2 parallels and the intersecting LOS between camera and missile). So mu ~= 5 degrees.
      Application of elements of supersonic compressible flow theory:
      Thus, sin(mu) = 1/M --> M = 1/sin(mu) --> ... --> M ~= Mach 11.5.
      The result is of course highly sensitive to the value of mu @ mu ~= 5 degrees, due to the function f(x) = 1/sin(x). For example, an estimation error of +-1 degree yields a Mach number calculation error of +-2 Mach @ mu ~= 5 degrees!
      So this slightly excessive value in observed speed can be attributed to an estimation error in terms of the ground surface-LOS angle.

It follows a weird aeroballistic trajectory, during which it initially dives to low altitude to occlude itself from long range AD systems. During its midcourse flight phase, it keeps cruising at that altitude at hypersonic speed until it reaches close to the target area. Then, during the terminal phase of flight, it pops up, gains some altitude and starts diving, homing on the target coordinates while maneuvering erratically at still incredible speed. It's absolute hell on earth for every single air defense system in existence and absolutely no specific countermeasures have been developed against it.

The exhaust of that engine is then dumped in a ring around the nozzle which created a film that keeps the nozzle cool. Still very hot, but cool enough not to melt.
    You're probably thinking of the Space Shuttle engines, which do in fact use liquid hydrogen to cool the nozzle, since they don't have any kind of generator exhaust to use. This keeps the engine nozzles nice and cool, cool enough that frost can form on the outside while the engines are firing.

First of all Russia fires many different missiles (not only Kalibr) and slow flying Kamikaze drones (and the latter is way more likely what it was). Plus they fire decoy missiles. So, while its possible that it was a Kalibr cruise missile, i very much highly doubt it that it was Kalibr. US is planning now to ship Patriot missiles to Ukraine, but only a single battery. They would be manned with very rapidly trained Ukrainian crews that have never operated them, so why give them max skill? The problem is with this video is that the fragments would simply not catch up with the hypersonic missile in time, even if the defending missile would proximity detonate. Basically the timing would need to be perfect and as we have seen if the missile is destroyed at the last moment, its fragments will still impact the target with quite decent damage. The tracking is not realistic in this game and the physics are simply not accurate enough in this game, plus Russians would fire decoys and the hypersonic missiles should have variable trajectory. Kinzhal is basically a beefed up air launched Iskander missile.

Munitions normally expose them selves and slow down before striking a target, so by putting the patriot on the far side, it has a better angle of attack as the incoming munition is likely as exposed as possible. The easiest example is how a tomahawk rides low to the ground, then slows and jumps up realativldy high before striking a target.

    At 15:00 you mention the Patriots poor performance against the Scuds. Keep in mind they redesigned the fuse on the Patriot to be more effective against balistic missiles. The Patriot's problem in Desert Storm was that it would detonate too far away from the incoming Scud because it was designed to shoot down aircraft that are much more susceptible to fragmentation than a ballistic warhead. Modern Patriots should be theoretically much better against ballistic missile threats than early 90s Patriots, not just in terms of guidance and kinematics but also because they have purpose built ABM fuses.
