US Patriot vs Russia’s S-400 - which is better?
The Patriot and S-400 are highly sophisticated air defense systems that have the ability to intercept and neutralize wide range of aerial threats. These systems use advanced radars and sensors to detect and track incoming threats, and can launch interceptor missiles to destroy them before they can cause any damage. The Patriot is a designed by Raytheon and it’s name is derived from the radar used in the system. A single patriot battery consists of radar set, an engagement control station, launcher station, antenna mast group, and interceptor missiles themselves. The Radar finds and tracks targets, and helps the missiles hit their targets accurately. The Engagement Control Station calculates trajectories for interceptors and controls the launch sequence. The Launcher Stations hold and launch the missiles. The Antenna Mast Group is the main communications backbone for the whole unit. The Patriot is armed with a variety of missiles capable of destroying variety of aerial threats.
While, S-400 Triumf is built by Russia as an upgrade to the S-300 family. The S-400 is composed of various components that work together to achieve its target. The first component is a launch vehicle, which carries the missiles. The second component is a command and control post mounted on a vehicle, serving as the system's heart. Finally, the system comes with a set of radars with varied ranges to intercept targets from multiple directions at high altitudes. The Patriot is outfitted with a passive electronically scanned array radar. It can track up to 100 targets within a range of 93mi. On the other hand, S-400 uses a combination of radars with varied ranges. The 96L6E radar is particularly notable for its ability to detect and track low-flying cruise missiles and fighter jets within 186mi. The Grave Stone radar is another impressive sensor, which can detect and track ballistic missiles and stealth aircraft within 249mi of range. While the Big Bird acquisition radar can locate and identify 300 targets simultaneously within the distance of 373mi.
The missile can travel at speeds over 3,150mph with flight altitude of 15mi, and has a range of more than 99mi. It has range of 37mi and can engage incoming targets at high altitudes with speeds over 3,150mph. Whereas, S-400 system is armed with a variety of missiles mounted on a truck. For long range engagement, the system is armed with 40N6E missile, which is equipped with active radar homing to intercept air targets with blistering speed of 2,700mph. This missile has claimed range of 249mi and can target high value spy or support aircraft . How does it work? The patriot’s radar detects a target and gathers information about it’s location, speed, and trajectory. The radar sends data to a command center, where operators assess it and decide if an approaching object is hostile. Once the engagement is authorized, the launcher fires two missiles in a "ripple" 4.2 seconds apart to destroy the incoming object.
On the other side, the S-400 system operates by initially identifying a target through the use of suitable radars at hand. The information is then passed to the command and control center, which determines whether the target is friendly or hostile and chooses to engage the target. Subsequently, with the assistance of the engagement radar, the suitable missile is launched to neutralize the threat. For detailed conclusion, watch the complete video.

One of the main advantages of the S-400 is that missiles are launched in any direction in azimuth. 360 degrees without launcher rotation.
The petriot does not have this - to change direction by 180 degrees - you need to turn the entire launcher.
On the S-400, the radars also scans all 360 degrees.

You guys forgot to mention the single most practical feature of russian air defense systems; the angle of the rockets relative to ground. Patriot missiles are angled 45 degrees more or less in a specific direction that is why it comes with just one radar system that is focused in one direction only. This means that if you want a full 360 coverage you'll need 2 or 3 patriot systems pointed in multiple directions. On the contrary, the s400 is angled 90 deg upwards w/c means it's missiles can go in any direction of the incoming threat. This is also the reason why it has 3 radar systems since it will overlap it's detection on a almost 360 degree field of view. This is more practical in that you can have 1 s400 system cover an entire area compared to patriot where you need to really anticipate where the threat will be coming from

You forgot to mention that S-400 is also used in tandem with short-range systems to intercept smaller targets. And you completely ignored the fact that unlike the Patriot system, S-400 has a 360 degree coverage, which makes repositioning unnecessary.

US air defense system did not work as intended when Saudi's oil refinerry were attacked by low cost Yemeni missiles, so Saudi went to S400 of Russia.

Those systems are not intended for shooting down small and cheap BPL... One Patriot or S400 missile costs 1 to 2 million dollars. It is intended for targeting ballistic missiles and enemy aircraft - not for small BPLs.
Other systems are used for these purposes - type BUK m2/m3, TOR m2 or Pancir SM. Another reason why Saudi Arabia decided on Russian systems (there is no blackmail and conditioning from Russia, and the technical capabilities of the S 400).
And the S300 nor 400 is working on shooting down GMLRS MLRS/HIMARs rockets in Ukraine.. 🤷

I will add that the Patriot has a dead zone of 50 meters from the ground, Tomahawk and Kalibr cruise missiles fly at 15-20. The Patriot radar has a narrow sector, it is not circular like the C400. The Russians repeatedly offered competition between systems - the United States refused. In Syria, the Israeli F35s fly around the C400 in a wide circle, they have a ban on approaching. Turkey was offered the Patriot and included back in the F35 program if they removed the C400 - the Turks refused. Since the summer of last year, the C500 has been entering the troops. The C500 is the only system to shoot down a target flying at hypersonic speed along a ballistic trajectory (like Trident, Minuteman) in the Arctic, twice. C550 is currently being tested

Assuming your analysis is correct the Russian S-400 out performs the US Patriot System in both range and target acquisition. This also seems confirmed by China, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Iran all having acquired the S-400 System and one would assume prior their purchases their military experts would have evaluated all available Air Defense Systems effectiveness. We are also hearing Russia is now finalizing testing of its S-500 System which will have a much more lethal operational capability.

Don't even worry about the s400. Even the old s300 system has a longer range, radar and greater fire rate than Patriot. US generals themselves say Patriot systems are incredibly expensive and you need a lot of them to be effective. US generals themselves say US didn't pay attention to air defence as they believe the best defence is a good offence. So they prioritised US fighter pilots instead of air defence. In particular, how to make fighters more stealth so that they can spy and sneak into other countries air space like a thief. Ask a F35 pilot "what do you do when you see a SU35 coming directly at you". They will say "We are told to...run!"

This means that ALL Russian systems can exchange data with each other.
On the one hand, this massively increases the effectiveness against practically every threat and, on the other hand, it makes it more difficult for the opponent to fight it successfully.
Even if the S-400 system is used completely autonomously, it has its own short-range defense system (Pantzir).
This makes successful combat using e.g. HARM practically impossible.

I do not know which short or medium-range system can be integrated into a combination of Patriot and THAAD.
For example, the Russians use the Pantzir short-range system as close-range defense for their S-400 and S-500. This makes combating these systems with anti-radar weapons more difficult. AND the Pantzir systems can access all radar data from the S-400 or S-500 systems.
In addition, the Russians can also integrate long-range radar systems such as NEBO-M.

To protect any object, you will need 4 sets of Patriot, radar and launch containers of each installation should look to the north, south, west and east. 4.5 billion dollars stand guard over one object. The S-400 has a 360 degree umbrella. Radars rotate and scan everything. The launchers are vertical, which means the rocket will find a shortcut to the target by itself. 700 million dollars reliably protect the facility. The Russian system is better in all possible aspects, both technical and cost. And this means that if Russia puts its system at an equal cost as the US 4.5 billion, then this dome will be impossible to break through.

i do wonder, how does russia make the S400 so cheap? my only conclusion is they are effectively liying on how much the system actually costs, military hardware ins't magic and the olligarchs are by no means making things more efficient.

I think Turkiye said it best. They gave up hundreds of millions of dollars spent on the F35 to purchase the S400. The US even offered the Patriot and would allow Turkiye to remain in the F35 program and Turkiye still said NO by purchasing the S400 anyway.
Actually before that the Us didn’t want to sell the patriot system to Turkiye the only time they wanted to sell it was when Turkiye was in the process of already buying the s-400 systems . As a country if I wanted to buy something and they denied me multiple times I would go for the better and cheaper system .
I think Turkiye will re-sell s400 to US with multiple price soon.

Yeah no... You need to realise, that even the S-300 model from the 80s is easily superior to the most modern model of the Patriot system.
USSR learned from WWII that it could never assume that it would fight with air superiority, so it spent a CRAPLOAD of resources on making sure that it wouldn't matter. That even if its own airforce was completely destroyed, anything daring to fly over its groundforces would be shot to pieces.
This was later reinforced by Natos and USAs excessive focus on airpower, as it basically made the Soviet airdefences potentially REALLY overpowered.
Which was also blatantly shown in the 1973 war, when a limited amount of export model Soviet SAMs, fielded by personnel and support of questionable quality, still came close to utterly shredding the Israeli airforce.
The USN SAMs are better, but still not comparable.

S-400 is way, way better - it is far more modular, can deal with more targets. More missile types, more of everything. It can engage from much further.

I actually cannot confirm anything you said. At the end of the day both systems have similar roles but are also different. S-400 is actually not proven against peer enemy but there are many reports for failures like against the Israeli F-35. Also there is no evidence to suggest longer range defenses.

S400 is better: it's vertical and cold launch allows the rockets to fly and hit targets coming from any direction. Patriots are hot launched which means they can only be launched at an angle so the exhaust can escape, and that limits them to a narrow sector. S400 would be my choice every day any day

S400 Radar can track Stealth Aircrafts like the F-22 or F-35. For that task there are multiple Radars needed.
S400 has differing radars for acquisition, and targeting. The Aq radar (lower frequency) can "see" the stealth aircraft...but the targeting radar (higher frequency...providing weapons grade lock), required for guidance can not till much much closer range. So the S400 will know the F22 or F35 is there...but that is not the same as targeting it.
Russia's own performance claims are that the low-frequency arrays leveraged by the Nebo-M can detect the F-117 Nighthawk at a range of 350 kilometers (217 miles) in an environment free from electronic warfare (EW), and potentially as far as 72 kilometers (45 miles) under heavy jamming. This detection range is the basis for many S-400 counter-stealth claims, but it fails to acknowledge the difference between detecting a stealth fighter and targeting one, let alone the dramatically smaller RCSs of the F-35 and F-22
The figures above represent the detection range for the S-400 system’s low-frequency radars versus the F-117, which offers an RCS that’s approximately 30 times larger than the F-22 and at least twice the size of the F-35. As a result, both detection and targeting ranges for these more modern fighters will be reduced dramatically. However, it does give them a huge advantage over regular aircraft as the distance they can be seen at is shortened greatly and the ability for a good targetting lock is harder. It has never been about being invisible, but rather breaking a necessary step in a kill chain. People love to point out that stealth isn't perfect, to which I would say, "if stealth can be seen and targetted, what do you think happens to a fourth-generation plane?...they can be seen and targetted at much, much greater distances.
If stealth didn't work, then countries would not be spending billions of dollars chasing it.

For now, the Russians possess theist Effective air defence capabilities. Why won't they? While the US Concentrated on projecting military might as its concept of deterrence, ie F22,F35 and their patients, Aircraft carriers, establishment of foreign bases etc. Russia concentrated on Defensive capabilities ,even their best fighters are 1st great interceptors , air defence integration with advanced Jamming devices and all that
The US is also well invested into its defenses. After all the USN destroyers are almost entirely built around the defense of the carriers which are the offense power. AEGIS is a defensive system. It is only logical that the US made something similar for their ground-based operations.

Jets is Debateable, the SU-34 out classes most tactical strike aircraft the US has with the Exception of the strike Eagle and only the F-15 can really match the SU-30. The Su-35 and SU 57 only are matched by the F-22.

No interceptor either from Patriot or from S-400 has the same capability in one package. It's also the cheapest as it only cost around 700k to 1M USD. Hence why it is adopted for the Patriot system under Raytheon's PAAC-4 SkyCeptor.

If I wanted point defence for example, defending an airfield or a base I would choose the Patriot every time because thats what it's designed to do. If I wanted area denial air defence the s400 because that's what it's designed for.

You can't because they fill different roles for different militaries. That also does not make the S-400 better. The Patriot is a small part of the US's "layered defense". The S-400 tries to do more with a single system. In other words, it tries to fill part of the role that THAAD would fill for the US. They are not really directly comparable.

The S400 is superior in every way. With a defense budget as massive as ours, I would think we would have the better system but that’s simply not the case. We need to upgrade our middle defense systems drastically and now to meet the new threats of today.
We also need to figure out a way to make US military equipment and weapons more affordable. It seems our defense contractors, as important as they are for keeping our country safe, are taking advantage of our rich defense budget simply because they can. They have been getting away with overcharging our government for years and something needs to be done. Russia and China already have systems far superior to ours and they will continue to our pace us until something changes.

So many modifications and improvements have been made and thus the results are only for historical comparisons rather than an overview of how it would perform today. That's a big mistake I see many people do. To compare platforms with their current versions. Like in my country there are debates for and against the F-16 and many people against the purchease of the F-16 are point how old this system is. Seems every single comment I've read says the S-400 is best-- often pointing out the same advantages it supposedly possesses over the Patriot... Yet, simultaneously, I am watching a video on Twitter/X of a Ukrainian Neptune missile blowing an S-400 installation off the face of the Earth in Crimea two days ago-- in broad daylight-- while a Ukrainian surveillance drone loiters overhead recording the whole thing in glorious HD-- with nary a hint of a response from the S-400 battery. 🤔Maybe the Russians just forgot to plug it in? 🤷♂

It is absolutely impressive that Russia has equipment that out competes American military equipment considering that Russian economy is 15 times lower than the American economy. They don't just outdo America in defensive equipment but on offensive weapons too, they just have fewer stockpiles but higher quality.

You don't know how Russian MIC operates !! They have a huge advantage over us because all MIC are state owned and they can produce at any given time for the cost. @@wadopotato33isn't this video an example of how the Russians get a lot more bang for their buck than we do? It's pretty obvious that of the 800b/year we spend maybe 75% of that is lost to corruption/over pricing etc. So you can't just compare dollars spent and that's the value of a military.
Look at how the Russians are outpacing the us in terms of tanks, artillery ammo, man power, armoured vehicles and missile defense systems...
