Choosing My Guns With Purdey Gun Makers | From Suit To Shoot | Episode 7

- Опубліковано 6 чер 2024
- In episode 7 of our series From Suit To Shoot, Kirby finally makes it to the holy grail of gun makers, James Purdey & Sons. This historic company is a British gunmaker based in London, specializing in high-end bespoke sporting shotguns and rifles. Purdey holds three Royal Warrants of appointment as gun and rifle makers to the British and other European royal families.
There is no one better suited to helping Kirby select the perfect guns for a shoot up in Scotland than Purdey. Luckily, their director of gun sales, Andrew Ambrose, was on hand to walk Kirby through their incredible history dating back to 1814! Then it was time to look at some of their amazing guns.

Kirby...i know you see it in the comments, you've caught lightning in a bottle here buddy. Whatever it is about this series in particular, that has all of us fans of yours, so excited to see each new episode, I really hope you can recreate the air of this series going forward. It's simply amazing to watch you go so in depth to so many various heritage houses. Thank you for showing all of this to us, we would not have known any of this otherwise.
Thank you! It will be a difficult one to match… but we have some exciting new ideas in the works!! Learn more about them on our Patreon! 😉
@@kirbyallison stfu you fraud haha. You gotta be in the blood line, not act like it, yank.
Amazing dynamic and productive tension between your roles as connoisseur, journalist, PR man and entertainer (perhaps even trying to make a buck/defray costs as a UA-camr). There is a reason I turn to UA-cam to experience the cutting edge of culture and you are part of it, Kirby.
@@markjones2781 Thanks, Mark! Still working on that last bit! But it’s sure been a fun journey!
Kirby, I know I say this a lot, but your content quality has grown tremendously in the last couple of years. This series is a testament to that.
But I know what you need to do next:
I want to see Kirby explore the world of quality craftsmanship and tradition and go find himself a Bentley, or even better yet, a bespoke refurbished Bristol 410!
Tell me you wouldn’t look amazing driving around Dallas in that. And we could watch the video of you having one refurbished
Kirby, this is without a doubt one of the most vivid and descriptive videos you have made on the channel. I would have never known of Purdy, its heritage and how seminal the brand is. Well done.
Indeed
'Never heard of Purdey'? That's like saying that you've never heard of Rolls-Royce.
This can easily be suitable for Netflix, or BBC, or any other network! The dedication to quality is evident.
For sure these videos are first rate.
BBC would never show this. Guns are a danger to society, and there are no persons of colour to be seen!
Yeah let's market this to the almost extinct boomer class, on outdated platforms they exclusively use, so we can fail to make money back on the project.
The ads on UA-cam are way better financially than TV ads, and extremely less painful to set up comparatively too. The pain comes on the viewer side if you don't pay the $15/month for premium, of which is an absolute steal compared to the $100+/month cable bill, plus the extra packages, then you need to buy the box, then subscribe to a network you like... just for them to release clearly politicized films with enough dramatic pauses to stretch a 30 minute show into 2 hours... or to tune into "news" networks that read the exact same script as one another because that's a sign of true education and not indoctrination.... dare I go on? The platform only exists because it buys votes, stop pretending otherwise.
Nah. Not Netflix. They are anti-gun goons.
They would ruin it

Unbelievable how I one day stumbled upon this channel at age 26 and thought it wasnt for me and now I am utterly obsessed and plays a huge part in who ive become today.
Unbelievable each of yours new episodes surprises me with quality.... quality of storys, peoples and things that been made! Thank you so much.
Another fabulous episode, thank you Kirby! I’ve always known of Purdey so it was really interesting to see the heritage behind the name. On a separate note, the production values of this episode, and the series as a whole, has been of the highest quality, it makes it much more pleasurable to watch. Congratulations to your team. The teaser of the next episode and the smile on your face makes me look forward even more to watch it.
This has been by far my favorite series yet! Thank you for showcasing this tradition of upland hunting
I love the fact that he checks every gun before he hands it down to Kirby.
This is the law! Always and by ALL!
@@vladimirmihnev9702 You hand me a gun and I am going to check it myself. Its the trust but verify- Old Russian Proverb.
Too bad Baldwin didn’t.
@@misterbobo8139 Wouldnt have mattered. The gun was supposed to have been loaded with blanks. That was %100 the armorer that had no experience other than that her dad had been a movie armorer and Hollywood nepotism. His mistake was hiring her.
@@andrewdriver3318 oh hey, I found the person who doesn't know a damn thing about firearm safety. Even a gun that can only fire blanks, with the single exception being side/top venting blank guns, should never be pointed at someone and fired. Blanks can and will kill if fired at a close range. If Baldwin followed even one out of the 4 basic rules of gun safety, the accident would've never happened.
My goodness…This series continues to out do itself…episode after episode!! #Outstanding 👍🏻👏🏻
One of the best shows you have done. The artistry of the guns and clothes is timeless. Learning that engraving is being done by a new generation gives hope for the future. Thank you, Kirby.
Absolutely my favourite video in this series, & they've all been !fantastic! Videography in the Long Room was excellent, we really got a sense of scale, grandeur & history.

Hi Kirby, this by far the best and most educational and informative series that I have watched. I have been enthralled by the amazing craftmanship and professionalism of everyone you have met so far. You have been truly a great ambassador for what Britain still can be super proud of - artisan heritage and tradition.
Kirby, I’ve been watching your content off and on for a while. The journey you have traveled from the Hangar Project to now is simply amazing. This particular series, along with the father/son Sahakian family cigar series, is by far and away the best there is. Your content is now playing out as nearly cinema and its most enjoyable to watch while on the road with work during down time. As a fellow Texan, I say thank you.
Whatever new editor you got, give him a raise, phenomenal work. Youve come a long way.
holy moly, I am blown away by this series each episode out does the one before it. I don't want this series to end lol This gives me Discovery channel vibes :) thank you for sharing we all appreciate the work that goes into these videos thanks all around involved.
All natural conversations, nothing scripted, more on craftsmanship and your ready for the history channel, BBC or PBS , very educational
James Purdey & Sons commitment to heritage will forever place them in a category of their own. Quality craftsmanship and tradition can only be gained through time.
And Kirby summed it up beautifully. "A work of art that is meant to be used."
I will never in my life be able to afford a Purdey, thank you for showing the process, craftsmanship and art that goes into these pieces.
Amazing lifestyle, amazing folks, amazing place, amazing music, thank you for bringing all to us, Kirby!
Kirby, this whole video series is incredible. The quality of your videos is unmatched. They are all a pleasure to watch!
Old world / modern world craftsmanship to a level that goes beyond most folks understanding. Art meets tool and the imagination never stops. All are amazing but Damascus steel is on another level of amazing.
Kirby, this episode was absolutely outstanding. To be in the great house of Purdey, experiencing such rich heritage and craftsmanship, at the highest level would be a dream come true. Thank you so very much... ❤️🇦🇺
Every video in this series I’ve treated like an event. I make sure to set aside the time to watch and appreciate it. Best UA-cam series I’ve watched in a long time. Fantastic job.
Absolutely perfect, I'm 21 years old and you are giving goals in my life that I want to achieve, thanks Mr Kirby Allison, from the bottom of my heart

I thoroughly enjoyed watching that. There is something captivating watching a master craftsman speak about and demonstrate his work.
It’s 1.40 AM and I can’t stop watching this video. Fantastic work you’ve done Kirby!
I was in trap shooting in high school. Watching this brought back so many wonderful memories. I absolutly love this series! Keep the videos coming!
This entire series is flawless! Kirby, you have completely outdone yourself! It would be awesome if you could do a video where you combine a visit with the Sahakians, the Foulkeses, Tom Chamberlin, and many others. Perhaps another walk around London where you meet up with these folks during the course of the day. Perhaps a video into British car manufacturers such as Rolls-Royce, who offer bespoke traditions and services.
For those of us who cannot financially pursue this level of craftsmanship, thank you for pulling back the veil and allowing us a realistic glimpse into a world of surreal “quality, craftsmanship, and tradition”!
I used to work for a company that heat treated the parts for the guns and knives the craftsmanship in the engraving is stunning to see up close.
Fascinating series, really wonderful to see this traditional craftsmanship
This series had just been incredible the professionalism involved has really set the bar
Unique series. Top quality. Feels like Christmas watching this.
I have absolutely enjoyed this series and the exemplary quality of these fine purveyors.
Kirby, I came across your channel because of this series. Stunning work, I've really enjoyed this. I can't wait to see the shoot.
What a great detailed story about Purdy & Bros. Great video and always looking for more of your adventures with friends. Love the suit. 10 stars
It’s the journey over the destination. Never satisfied. Always want more or different. Love this stuff.
Thanks Kirby. I will very much look forward to seeing that. All the best.
THIS is THE episode, in this series, that I have been eagerly awaiting. Please produce more content on the bespoke sporting arms, clothing, equipment, and traditions of the UK please!
Another excellent episode ! Thank you, Mr. Kirby !
Super fascinating and interesting interview/episode. Such an amazing company, top notch through and through.
A very longtime ago I suggested you to visit a traditional english gunmaker and you replied it was on your mind and in the pipeline. I am so happy that you followed up and it is very interesting to hear you ask the right questions. Although I will probably never own or shoot such a magnificent work of art I very much appreciate how you presented this subject to us viewers..from The Netherlands, thx Kirby.
Very interesting, I know very few people who still shot side by side in the UK. Purdy are basically functional art. It's fantastic that craftmanship like this still exists.
I shoot side by side purely because my gun is inherited, I don’t think I know more than a couple who would buy a side by side anymore
My grandfather had a beautiful pair of Purdey over and unders, I never had the chance to shoot them unfortunately but I spent many an hour admiring their beauty.
A tremendous series of videos, many thanks
This is truly amazing I appreciate videos you made on this subject
Finally. The channel I’ve been waiting all my life for.
its a credit to kirby for always finding the absolute best and most traditional people to showcase on this channel for our viewing pleasure
but purdey isnt the best neither is it the most traditional or the oldest in the uk
It hurts our lower class pocket but yes, when you see craftsmanship like this, it’s worth every penny. Good on these people. Beautiful art.
Amazing, everything. Thank you.
I have a few items from Purdey including the shoes, the filed coat, jodhpurs, tattersall shirts etc. They are extremely durable and the attention to detail is great. One thing about the boots though is that you have to break them in. You really don't want to wear them on a day shooting straight out of the box. I have relatively sensitive feet so it took me a couple months to break them in and they are still stiff due to the Goodyear welting, but they look amazing
Beautiful content as usual, keep up the amazing work Kirby!
Very interesting Kirby loving this series, keep up the good work
Fascinating video, held my interest the whole time.
This is what I have been waiting for!!!!!!
03:26 Inside these doors contains the best shotguns in the world. I've wanted a Purdey since the late 70's. Thank you so much Kirby for this peak inside this company and their "Best" guns.

Love Kirby's stuff and this "From Suit to Shoot" series is right on dope, but I do take a shot for every time time I hear the word "proper" . Keep up the stellar work sir!
As a long time gun nut I, really appreciate this.
The quality of your videos is consistently great Kirby
Note to self if I walk into a gun shop in England and there is a cellist playing in the back ground. I probably can’t afford to buy anything in there. Lol
Especially if they hired a musician like Yo-yo Mah.....

OH BOY OH BOY OH BOY.... this has only just come into my UA-cam feed/suggestions. Very nice, thank you for your time and effort making these videos.
A British friend had a great influence in my bird hunting proficiency. He introduced me to the 'butt, belly, beak, bang' method that he learned from his grandfather on his estate in N. Ireland in his teen years. I learned to follow the bird and smoothly swing from the rear of the bird and follow its flight and when you swing past the beak you fire continuing the swing which creates a string of shot the bird flies through. Before I was just trying to shoot the head which had me stopping my swing as I fired.
This trick also applies to anti-aircraft guns as well as warships...
Do you remember what the estate was called? I live in Northern Ireland
I've been bird hunting in the US for several species since I was 8. I'm now 30, and I have never once heard of this technique; thank you for commenting this, I'm going to use this to help my son learn.
@@BigSkinnySlimm you should look up Mike Yardley. He has a few really great videos showing wing shooting techniques. It has helped me a lot
What a beautiful experience with Purdey. I am so glad this still exists in our world. Thanks for taking us along Kirby.
For people that say they are not into art I say if this is beautiful to you then you are into art. There is, to me, no finer work of art than a beautifully handcrafted gun.
Mr Allison, I very much enjoy your videos and are looking forward to seeing you in the highlands with your fantastic Purdeys. Beretta from Italy is a company that also has a great history. They are soon to be 500 years old (founded in 1526) and are still owned by the family.
Absolutely brilliant work Kirby!
The B-Roll on this video is absolutely beautiful. I was captivated.
For someone to enjoy such quality, as well as functionality. This matter so much. Just as much as it used to.
Kirby you make amazing videos. Keep up the awesome work my friend.
Had to watch this twice it was so good.
🙏🙏
Beretta (IT): 1526
Purdey: 1814
Let's put things in order.
Which would you rather have though? Me? I'll take the Purdey.
What are the earliest German and French gun manufacturers ? Are they still in business ?
Fascinating.Yes,the German firms,V.C. Schilling,Mauser, and the Austrian Feurlach, many others, all makers of fine sporting firms, lost their records in WW2.Exceptional that Purdey has kept theirs
That might be because they were making guns for the nazis, and got bombed as a result. Or the russians destroyed them, like they did with Karl Walther and others in Zella-Mehlis.
Very fascinating. I just got into shotguns and trap shooting. He's very knowledgeable about his calibers and even checked to see if a round was chambered before handing it to you. I believe the 16 and 20 gauge are popular in the United States now but everyone who owns a shotgun has a 12. This is my first introduction to Purdey. I would shoot it a lot and put this on display in my home.
Good day, Kirby,
Allow me to felicitate you on such superb work. Loving this series and the filmmaking is exceptional. Great work by you and the team.
I was waiting for this episode so longingly.

Thank you for taking us on this journey.

Beautiful Art
Great Presentation
I have to agree with the other comments. As far as content within an individual video, this is top notch!
First of all, thank You for the video. Excellent insight into one of the top English gunmakers! Personally, I'm more into long range target shooting than hunting, however I absolutely LOVE the quality of the Purdy range of products. They really are art, but also displaying the natural beauty of premium quality wood and steel. The quality of them puts them in a very strange category.....TOO beautiful to use, for fear of damaging them, yet it really would be a crime to NOT use them for their intended purpose!
You don't need all of that stuff to enjoy life "properly" :) That said, this was very well written and artistically executed production. Congrats to you and your team.
42.51... you hold up a side by side then your holding and over and under.. then a side by side again..... ! Love the content .

That Damascus side by side is beautiful. I think a tiger maple stock would really suit the pattern weld.
