Cool dragonfly! The legs folding up makes it feel that much more organic. I believe the reason why it would not fly perfectly level is because its wings are not actually making lift, only thrust (or rather lift they do make on down stroke is cancelled when they move up). Giving them some down tilt by double-stacking steering hinges where one still acts as a free pivot would fix that. However, i do think that this 'no lift' was a part of what made it so agile. By not having a predetermined 'up' it could fly equally well in any direction and/or position.

@@Cax.S why you throwin smoke my way bruh? im literally agreeing with most of your statement, i js think swearing isnt as big of a component as you deem it to be
Awesome build, Dragonflies are my favorite! Again, the automation for the take off sequence and leg movement is what takes it to another level, just like the doors and hatchs on the Hank Tank.
This is RAD!!!! An evolution type battle like what you did with those battle drones or Cargo vs Fighter videos would be SWEET with these! All of you guys have a dragonfly with a Canon and try to take out the one person with a parrot ornothopter, longest flight time wins. Reminds me of an old game I used to play, Drakenguard, the dragon fights in the sky were so cool!
I'm really glad you finally make actual ornicopter, well done, its not just working, it's working great! Now, i see you become better and better with logic stuff so i challenge You to try build V-tol Jet with function to hover in place. I belive this stuff is actually easier than ornicopter.
Fantastic! I think the sails are colliding in the tail section causing the sparks, maybe place a block or pipe bit between them to space them out slightly more. But dam! That thing flies!
definitely one of my favourite creations you've made you nailed it! keep on doing what you're passionate about your last few creations you can really see the love you put into them! thank you for the hours of entertainment and laughs! PS: really wanted to see that dragonfly underwater more and see if you could get it to take off from underwater, idk if that's even possible 😂
instead of adding the tiny tail fins to the whole tail i suggest make one pair of the wings be for roll, and the other for yaw, just make sure the wings go back level when its directional key isn't being pressed
That was cool, I need to experiment with the logic gates a bit more I don't fully understand how they work but that was such a cool way of utilising them and having a separate pattern for take off was a neat idea! Well done
Awesome! I love to see experimental builds that end up working well:) Nice work! Multi-player Monday idea: A race track with 5 Gates that need to be opened in order to finish the course. Each contestant has their own lane. In order to open the Gates, you need to pick up an object and place it in the corresponding Lock. The objects get larger and more cumbersome as you progress down the course. ie: First object= Dragon Ball, Second Object= medium sized cube, Third Object= Concrete Rod that needs to be slid inside a tube, Fourth Object= A Dumbbell shaped object that needs to be balanced on an upright post and of course, Fifth Object = Atlas Ball= Needs to be Lifted over an obstacle before being placed on a counter weight that opens the final Gate to the end of the course:) Just a thought:)
At 12:40 I believe the reason it pulls down is the center of mass and lift are likely far off center, and pointing the tail up shifts the center of lift even further away causing the opposite effect desired. Fixing the tail moved the center of lift forward likely very close to inline with the center of mass. I say this because I believe it will help you design any sort of flying machine in the future.
The dragonfly is pretty cool, works well. Hummingbird next? Something like stay in place flying/turning and also normal flying. You know, hummingbird stuff.
What a nice creaation ! As impressive for the logic that the design. I think the sparks are coming from the wings toutching the legs when they flap down.
I think you would love the game Starship Evo. It is an open world sandbox based game where you can build spaceships and all kind of vehicule and mechanical contraptions, and last but not least it has draggable wedges!!!
I think adding a way to fold the wings back would make for cool stunt dive bombs. Adding magnets and an open/close button to the legs could be fun to dive bomb, snatch something up with the magnets and then fly off.
Awesome build! Super functional and super cool looking. The thing that bothered me the most is when the tail curls up during take off. It's unnecessary because the ornithopter is taking off from a stand still, and the tail is already at the ground with an angle. Other than that one thing for me, you really did an amazing job creating it. Love the vids!
Hey Scrapman, I would like to suggest some ideas on fixing some issues. The fins on the front are a great idea, but might be why you're getting that downward pull. You could try putting them on the sides of the head to help with horizontal stability and maybe even some gliding. The tail could rotate to give roll as well as well as yaw. The head itself could be a diving bell but I don't remember if fins can be attached to the sides or not.
Regarding take off, I feel like things would go 100% smoother if the default position for the wings were like an actual dragonfliy's where they would point straight up. this way the initial thrust to take off would simply be going from vertical to horizontal with the floor (both sets of wings would have to do this), once that happens the sensors would realize you're no longer on the gorund and flap normally. This would help with the jerking that you experience on take-off
I absolutely love the design - the only thing I would suggest is that actual dragonflies push off of the ground with their back legs - they are angled a bit like a cricket's but not over the wings. That could give a little bit more distance for the wings to begin their flapping motions. On another note, another could be a hummingbird - the animation is very similar to that of a dragonfly's front wings but just angled upwards.
kudos for your dragonfly, the maneuverability far exceeded that of my parrot, had i only more space for logic, could only roll on the down stroke. really good job only one thing, dragonfly's dont have fins on the tail but would be hard to balance ^^
It’s really good, though imo it flies more like the Stormcutter from HTTYD than a Dragonfly, I say this mainly because how a dragonfly flies and propels itself in various directions is very complex, still though it’s a good attempt especially for not having done something like this before
ornithopter speed challenge. also, series idea, evolution season 2, but you start each new challenge, with the winner from the last em. start with a water race, with the traditional rules. then, for the second ep, you have to start with the ultimate winner from the boat race, to make something for off-roading. keep changing up the challenges to be the worst possible thing for the last vehicle, and enjoy the chaos. like real evolution :P
I think you should try the method bellow, like a drone sorta. Basically make the wings flap diagonally instead of 2 rows! Drone method: + - - + Row method: + + - -
Seeing the low flight over the water makes me think that you and the guys should do a multi-player challenge grabbing something(s?) out of the water. I'm thinking like an Osprey catching fish.
I would like to see you try to go as fast as possible with wings again, now that you know this method works. Maybe we need a new breakthrough for the sound barrier but I think you can get a creation to go really fast even if it's not really controllable
Very well done. An ornithopter repurposed as a submarine would be an ornithoscaphe - a bird-boat. The publishers should introduce a function to show you which parts are colliding, so you don't just have to guess from the sparks.
But it's not floating on the surface of the water as boats do, isn't it? It's more like… an ornithosphere (from bathysphere)? Or ornithomarine, perhaps
@@zh84 Huh, hadn't heard of bathyscaphes before. But, from what I can tell, Scrapman would have to put BCD's on his ornithopter to better approximate the floats, and it seems like it might get a bit bulky
Not that the creation in this video isn't good, but I feel like to challenge yourself more and to make the creation more similar to a dragon fly you should try to make it able to hover.
