Our story begins as Vox Machina, the heroes of Emon, arrive at the cavernous underground city of Kraghammer. After wiping out a grave threat to Emon’s emperor, Sovereign Uriel Tal'Dorei III, the band of adventurers has been sent on a journey by Arcanist, Allura Vysoren to find Lady Kima of Vord, a Halfling Paladin of Bahamut, who was drawn to Kraghammer upon learning of a great evil resting beneath it. The party get their bearings in the sprawling, dwarven city, meet a few of its more colorful denizens, and learn that the dwarves have been dealing with unnatural creatures spilling out of the mines in recent months. The mine’s overseer, Nostoc Greyspine, barely finishes explaining their troubles, when a pack of goblins and ogres come spilling out of the mine’s entrance, pursued by something far worse.

Good luck and enjoy!!! One tip for you if you want it. Dont feel obligated to watch the episode. Put it on in the background while you're doing something. I download one episode a day and listen to it while I'm at work. It makes the many many many many hours of content go by much quicker.

This first episode of campaign 1 is not the first game session. It seems that the gang were playing D&D for fun before deciding to take it online. For the background story up to "Arrival at Kraghammer" go to Campaign 1, Episode 36 which contains an origin story during the break (at 1:36:23 in that episode); it covers the adventures of Vox Machina up to the point where Critical Role 1 begins.
This episode: Character origins begin at 1:09 and run to 12:30. This animated introduction is blurred out over some copyright issue, but the audio gives you the gist; however, there is a live-action introduction the players put together that appears at the beginning of the episodes from 50 on.
Story Summary begins at 17:51, game begins at 20:00. Break at 1:31:50, game resumes at 1:43:49 and runs to 3:02:36.
I give these time markings for all the other episodes as well. Please make comments there, too, so those threads stay near the top for people to use. Thanks.
1/16/23 - Well, it's taken me two years, but I've finally watched and time stamped all 115 episodes of Campaign 1! I've gone through and checked and my comments are all still available. I've always been into dimension 20. This will be my first time watching critical roll. This might be a while but I'm excited.

The reason that the intro scene was blurred is because they used other artists and companies artwork and not their own.
They didn't say who it was but one/few(can't remember how many) wanted royalty fees paid to them every time they aired said artwork/intro.
They felt it was best to blur what they had and they eventually got rid of the lengthy character intro all together.
They ended up replacing it with their own much shorter live action version instead.

I'm an hour into the episode and I wonder if there was a campaign before this? I hear all there references like the Grog's persuasion check on barbarian goliaths, the ox in the bag of holding and the troll dick so far, and because of those references it feels like I missed something, it feels incomplete. Do you know if there's anything to find that can be watched or did they just play a campaign previous to this one off cam?

I was going to start a year ago; didn‘t understand a thing, decided Critical Role was probably still too much for me, me being an absolute beginner and all, waited and decided to try again now - started with the podcast, understood the vague picture but had trouble with the actual spoken lines, migrated to UA-cam for the subtitles and pictures of who is talking when and now I actually understand thing wohoo
I've known about CR for years, just now building it into my routine so I can finally enjoy their stories :)

@@savary5050 I once tried to make the subtitles for a 7 minute long video. After 1 hour I wasn't even halfway through it...and didn't even realise that much time had passed. So I can't even imagine how long must that have taken them to make these subtitles. Kudos to the team

@@savary5050 I used to do subtitles for a youtuber (unpaid... I just did it because I liked the content and the creator) and I probably did about an hour of accumulative subtitles and it honestly wasn't too bad. The hardest part is making sure everything is timed correctly. UA-cam has since disabled community subtitles and I hate them for it because there was no reason to remove it (keep in mind, the creator has to accept the subtitles).
They keep making reference to previous events is this the first campaign or not because I’m confused

They have a new production company called MetaPiegon (so named for the Meta Gaming Pigeons) 2 movie deals and a bunch of other stuff. I believe full creative control. I'm thinking (and this is only my assumption but other people think it too) EXU Calamity is going to be a movie.
Maybe EXU Prime too as a prequel to Bells Hells? Who knows.

The first couple episodes are rough, I'll admit, but as they go it gets better. If it REALLY bothers you, I highly recommend you skip the live show episodes bc the audio is actual garbage in those for the first season, but in studio after a while they get the audio significantly better, I think after the Kraghammer arc! Dont let it dissuade you though, if you can power through it its worth!

For those who started this campaign after watching the animated series and are asking who is Tiberius and why wasnt he on the tv show. There was a partying of ways with Orion and he leaves around ep 27. Also the character bios are blurred out because they were part of the twitch stream and not allowed to be used on you tube. The sound quality gets better. It just the first episode and they ran into a few tech issues which they sorted out quickly. Enjoy the ride. I think the briarwood are starts at approx ep 24-25 i think but i wouldnt recommend skipping. You'll miss the fun.

As the OP commented it is blurred due to copyright. From what I heard, one of the artist's credit got covered by the stream layout and they threatened for copyright or something. The whole thing got messy as a bunch of misunderstandings piled up so they decided to remove the entire character introductions. They just blurred everything and this will get no issue with copyrights.

This is the first episode. They started streaming a campaign they had already started.
I can only speculate as to why. Maybe they had this campaign already and decided to stream it. Maybe they wanted to start streaming a campaign and no one wanted to host them so the started the campaign and then found someone to host the videos. Either way, I thank Felicia at Geek and Sundry to give them a chance.

Crimson Victory Actually That's not true. Matt had some images made of the characters to celebrate the launch of the show but at some point later one of the artists whos work hed used was unhappy with the way they were being used. They contacted Matt about it via a lawyer so matt had the images blurred. Theres a reddit post that Matt personally replied to regarding this.
You can find it uncensored on youtube. Eventually it does appear properly in later episodes

I have fewer regrets than not starting to watch the series when I first heard about it around episode 15. It sounded cool and I saw some art so thought it was animated then saw some people in their stacked window talking weirdly and...it was 4 hours long!? I backed out slowly back then and, over the years, got curious but kept getting put off by the per-episode length. Finally started listening in during campaign 2 and...still haven't really started watching Campaign 1's episodes.
Finally, now, maybe?

Found critical role during Campaign 2, been watching Campaign 3 live, finally coming back for the very beginning. Love yall, anyone starting this journey have fun, its an absolute joy.
Just starting, got SEVEN YEARS of stuff to catch up on. If any of you guys want another campaign to follow, I highly recommend the Oxventures series, though they basically ignore many/all rules of DND in favour of fun. They’ve done Blades in the Dark as well.
