- Undervolting Asus ROG Zephyrus M15, COOLER TEMPS and MORE FPS on Your Gaming Laptop
In this video I cover how to undervolt the CPU and GPU on the Asus ROG Zephyrus M15. This can also apply to other gaming laptops or even desktop PCs. make sure to stick around to the end of the video where I have charts of the final temperatures and FPS scores after undervolting. First I go through and get some baseline temps and FPS averages, then we undervolted the system and run all the tests over again. Luckily after it was all said and done, I got cooler thermals on both the CPU and GPU, and I got More FPS on all the titles.

Amazing tutorial!! I went from 90-100 FPS in Valorant with consistent annoying FPS drops all the way down to 30 FPS, but after this I’m getting a consistent 200+ FPS !!!
That's awesome Omar!! Glad to hear that!!
This video blew my mind.. the first time I watched it I thought it was all BS because how is it possible that undervolting will give you more fps if less power is going through the system, but then I was playing on turbo for a while and noticed my CPU temps were quite high, 95c, and I thought "I might as well undervolt it to see if I can actually lower the temps so I can extend the life of my laptop at the cost of performance" but after I did it, to my surprise, as you said, I got better performance and better temps, like, how come they don't design these laptops like that out of the box? It is illogical but whatever, you method works wonders, thank you very much for sharing this video on this specific laptop which is exactly the one I have
Hahaha yes it is a strange concept! Glad to hear you got some really good results from it!
The reason is because of binning. Not all silicon that makes the cut for a particular product line is of equal quality. They tune performance to make the worst silicon in the product line stable, which requires more voltage. If you get lucky and get one of the better chips, it can be undervolted and remain stable, therefore you get better performance because it can be undervolted and then pushed harder to reach the same thermal ceiling.
Got my laptop u were one of the major reasons why I chose this laptop

Beautiful and super informative video, I'm applying this to my Strix G15 and I got to some conclusions: 1- you could chose to get less noise and less heat but at the same performance, 2- have much better performance at the same heat and noise level 3- have them all by precisely editing the voltage curve in MSI afterburner. In conclusion, it will always be a win win scenario for you and your device : )
Are you using stock mode presets in Armory Crate or using manual settings with custom fan curves?

Hey Jake, dope video. It seems like the Asus M15 is still throttling on tougher games for me (tarkov/cyberpunk/etc) but I guess that is to be expected for these thin laptops. Also I think it’s great that you’re still responding to people, keep up the great work!

Having these settings does not shorten the life of your laptop asus? Good video served me a lot and it does not heat up, it looket like an iroplane taking off 🤣 tanks men
If anything, it will make them last a bit longer because they're not getting as hot under load
Theoretically it should increase the lifespan due to less heat dissipation and power
consumption to the components.

Nice!
Tested on HP Omen 2019 on Valorant. Went from 88°C to 75°C, same fps. Thanks!
I have no voltage-configuration on zephyrus Duo GX551QS, undervolting is not possible?!
Glad I stumbled onto you channel! Dude I was going to buy the same M15 but the sale went away. I needed a new gaming laptop quick so I ended up finding an early 2020 Blade 15 (9750h, 16gb ram, rtx2060, 2.5tb m.2 ssd, 144hz) for $1160 so I pulled the trigger. The day it got delivered the M15 went back on sale 🙃😂😂
I'm still going to see if I can undervolt at all. It seems like my hardware is tweaked a lot by razer but worth a shot! Laptop temps in general just seem way too high lol
Thanks Jake! I feel ya man, I bought the M15 on a Saturday and the following Monday it went on sale.. That is awesome you scooped up a Blade 15! I love the Razer laptops, really great fit and finish on them.
Undervolting has been a good move for me so far, as you saw see from the video I dropped the temps and gained some FPS. I havent done any video editing since I did the undervolt so I am still a little unsure how it will perform for that, I imagine I wont notice a difference.
Yea Asus is the same way with having some different settings out of the box with there Armory crate app. I'm sure you will be able to do some tweaks to the Blade 15 to help those temps.
Thanks. I love your videos.

I have ROG zephyrous m15 and I’m never undervolting my laptop ever again. I tried doing this and it caused my laptop to go black screen for several hours when it’s on and now it’s on automatic repair.
Maybe you did sth wrong, because I did the same and it is OK, but it haven't helped 😅
Found out the hard way you can't undervolt the ROG Zehyrus M16. Even when I went to adjust the GPU with Afterburner, when I'd click one of the nodes to drag it, the computer would seize up and 'think' for a moment before the line would budge. I'd see on the metrics how the numbers would jump. When I tried to benchmark afterwards, the numbers are reading into the 100's, yet there's a visual stuttering that kept occurring in 5-7 second intervals. The fans would also sound as if a plane was taking off in my office and the heat was troublesome. I've decided to take it back, there's something seriously wrong with the device.
Ironically, however, I've applied these same techniques to my previous gaming laptop (An MSI with an RTX 2070) and with some tweaks to make the game more comparable to the Xbox Series X specs, I've been able to play Red Dead at a solid 70 FPS. The trees look a tad flat but, hey, at least nothing is at risk of melting or burning XD.

Different CS:GO maps (you show two different maps in the "benchmarks") have different performance. That's why we have specific benchmark maps in CS:GO. You should consider them for future tests.... Were the fans cranked to max in these tests?
I will have to see what maps are official benchmarks for a future test, as I wasn't
aware of this. On CSGO, I don't believe the fans were maxed but probably around 60-70%

It worked well for me as shown in the video! Possibly, I do not own a cooling pad but I would consider picking one up for a video.
@@JakeVirdenTech am gonna do the same and see if it makes a difference
I haven't played with the settings at all, mostly because I'm new to this hobby, and I don't want to tear up my machine.Great video, lots of great tips!
I use a liangstar cooling pad when I play Skyrim. It really seems to work great.Any thoughts on cooling pads?
Cooling pads are amazing I get around 55 degrees celsius when playing a game like skyrim or even black ops 2 thanks to mine. I'd get a cooling pad that can be elevated for more airflow.
I have this exact laptop, and lately (few months now)whenever I’m in a game (whether just on menu screen or actually playing ) the cpu temps are at a constant 93-96C on turbo or even performance sometimes (in any game, even something as old as cod black ops 2).I tried undervolting the cpu and gpu in the same way as the video shows, and it certainly improved performance (shadow of the tomb raider benchmark was 69 FPS at high, now it is 98) ,but now, depending on the game, cpu temps are either 84-96C (Overwatch) or 93-95 (shadow of the tomb raider )(sometimes I even see 97-98C for a sec) . So undervolting certainly did do something, but it is not enough. What more can I do to reduce the cpu temp? Gpu temp is perfectly fine between 64-75 on turbo. I already got my laptop’s fans cleaned at a computer store to see if that was the problem but nothing changed,so that shouldn’t be the problem
Have you thought about maybe opening it up and reapplying thermal paste? External fan that sits underneath it?
Did you ever find a solution?
Hey jake awesome video! I have the 2060 model m15 and my idle temp is between 50-60c. I was shocked to see 45c on your afterburner and was curious if there was anything else I could do to possibly lower my temps ?
Thank you!! Unfortunately we are kinda limited on what we can do to cool down laptops,
but the main things are the CPU/ GPU undervolt if possible, using a cooling pad, gaming at lower
settings. Other things I would do, disable high performance/ turbo modes in armory crate and
create a more aggressive fan curve in bios or armory crate.
What does Undervolt means? Thanks for making this videos
No problem! Undervolting is basically the action of reducing the voltage and power going to your core components like the CPU and GPU. The goal of common undervolting is to decrease thermals and sometimes get increase in fps due to temperature reduction.
Undervolting is almost the opposite of overclocking, usually the voltage is increased for a GPU or CPU overclock.
Hope this you out and thanks for checking out the video!!
@@JakeVirdenTech Well, I tried the Undervolt since I noticed a thermal problem on CPU temperatures but I wasn't able to get the system boot up and have the voltage at 75 :( But it did work at 50. I have also limited the CPU with QuickCPU. You think it will work?
@@hyperion8650 Yea this is where siliconlottery comes into play, certain chips might not like the lower voltage. I am not sure on the quick CPU settings, I havent messed with them myself.
@@JakeVirdenTech Via the Undervolting up to 50, doing the arrangements on quickcpu and using a custom curve, I manage to lower the excessive temperatures of the CPU (which were hitting 98-95 all the time) to 85, 83, 88. I'll probably send the laptop to repair, but it works for me

in after burning could definitely help.

from what people in the comments have been saying.
12:13 I have asus rog strix g713qr but I dont have dynamic boots settings in nvidia control panel ??
Easiest way to understand power your CPU but leave your GPU without anything complicated is to go under power options under processing state and change all the maximum to 50% as under games under load barely use like 20-30% of your CPU and just adjust it when you get any slow downs when normally using your PC my CPU temps went from 96 C to only 50 C and games run even better now as no thermal throttling and then can even overclock your GPU
I cant undervolt using throttle stop or intel xtu ( im using ROG Zephyrus m15 ). The core voltage setting is greyed out. I try to downgrade the bios. But the bios is not avaible in older version
Yea unfortunately Mohammad, Asus is really trying to prevent
users undervolting.

Hey Jake! If you don't see the feature, unfortunately you might not have it
due to a locked CPU or a bios version that does not have it.
80c is ridiculously cold for laptop. With stock paste I was thermal throttling down to 2.0ghz at 99c (Undervolted) then I found out that the heatsink bracket is not pushing down enough to the cpu surface so I fix it and I repaste it with Noctua NTH2 now it is full speed 85c.

Hi Stella! Unfortunately not all laptops/bios/CPUs support bios undervolting.
If the CPU is locked, it is unable to have the power settings and clocks adjusted.
Some bios versions also do not have this setting.
@@JakeVirdenTech Aw man, that sucks... :(
You mentioned a range of 70 to 80, is it more undervolted the higher the number or less? For example would 80 be a bigger undervolt?
Good question, in the case of the cpu undervolt in the bios the higher the number
the more voltage you are taking away from the system. So yes 80 is a larger more aggressive
undervolt.
People cant undervolt because asus has locked the option on most bios' after version 304.

the updated Bios that does not have these features.

So when I undervolted my m15 2070 Max Q (literally the exact laptop you have) and applied each setting you had mentioned it seems as if it has WiFi connectivity issues when trying to play warzone, although I did notice a pretty nice and welcoming FPS increase. Any tips on how I can keep the game running less laggy? I ran a WiFi speed test as well and I’m averaging about 190 mbps download with 12 mbps upload.
Hmmm that is a strange issue. There are so many factors when it comes to WIFI connectivity, Most of the time it is related to
distance and clearance from your WiFi source and other networking equipment. I would go into armory crate app and check and
see if you have any driver updates for you Wireless NIC in the laptop.
Hi jake! Im searching for laptop for architecture, im going to use softwares like Revit, Archicad, Photoshop, etc, and in between this Zephyrus M15 model or the Hp Omen 15 Ryzen 7, i wanna ask you about what model do you recommend me and if in this programs fans are loudly, thanks bro! BTW GREAT QUALITY REVIEWS IN YOUR CHANNEL!
Hey! Gotcha, I have thrown quite a few challenges at my M15 and it has handled them all very well.
I have done a fair amount of photo editing in Adobe Photoshop and 3D modeling in Fusion 360
and this laptop does great with it. Unfortunately I cant speak directly for Revit and Archicad since
I have not used those programs on this laptop and am not very familiar with them in general.
If it was me I would definitely go with the M15 over the Omen, Personally I just haven't had much
luck with HP in the past. I do Recommend laptops with AMD Ryzen processors, AMD tends to
provide more cores and threads for the money vs Intel. Intel is falling behind when it comes to
cost to performance, and they are also loosing the title of always having the fastest clocks and
in game FPS. But there are still lots of applications that are intel optimized. As far as the fan noise
goes, the M15 can be loud if the fan curve is set on the aggressive side. I have mine set to silent and
it stays super quiet while using photoshop and fusion 360.
Thanks a bunch for the positive feedback Adrian! Much appreciated my friend!!! sorry for the long reply, hope
this helps and let me know if you have any other questions!
@@JakeVirdenTech thanks for your great answer, i will go for my M15 then! 😎
@@adrianramirezrodriguez9615 No problem! I have some more videos on the M15 as well that go a little more in-depth on the laptop itself. I do also like some of the gaming laptops from MSI, Razer, and Lenovo has the new legion out that looks really nice!
@@JakeVirdenTech the lenovo 7 or 5?
@@adrianramirezrodriguez9615 the legion 7. I use a lot of Lenovo hardware working in IT and I have had great luck with it!
Why when i put the core voltage offset in 75 the computer get crashed
I would probably true a lower offset if you are experiencing crashing. With the way silicon lottery
works, you particular CPU might not favor lower voltages.
