    The SM7B is great for singers with bright voices and a lot of sibilance. It's also great for rock music and more aggressive genres. I absolutely love mine.
    The only thing I would say is that you need to factor in the price of an in-line mic preamp. Most interfaces and a lot of external mic pres won't have enough gain to power the SM7B without a lot of background hiss. An in-line mic preamp boosts your signal by about 25 db. I recommend the SE Dynamite. It costs $100. But most people go with the Cloudlifter, which I believe is $150 now.
    So yeah, it's still a very affordable microphone. But unless you already have a very powerful mic pre, you may have to spend an extra $100 on an in-line mic pre.

    Great video! As both a producer and vocalist I agree completely most budget mics are too bright; however, I’m a very low register bass singer who tends to make hyperpop type of stuff and for me budget mics can sometimes work great. When I first started working in the studios at my school I was so frustrated because some of the high quality mics (particularly ribbons) they had sounded so different than my shitty home set up and I just didn’t like that sound lol 😭. Found my sweet spot w tube clones of the C12!!

  • @gdanila
    @gdanila 5 місяців тому

    I think you shouldn't skimp on recording gear so if you want the sound you hear on most records these days your chain should look more like U87Ai (Telefunken U47/Manley Reference) - BAE 1073MP (or if you like the Nashville sound Api 512 or Capi 312) - TubeTech CL-1B (1176/Distressor for rock and aggressive pop/trap/rap). This is some general guide, not a rule, but more often than not you will find these in the chain regardless of music genre. This chain will set you back ~8300 Euros in Europe (assuming you can still find a CL-1B) , but if you really want the sound of the charting records, that's how much it takes (given that you have the talent to put trough the gear, both engineering and artistic wise). I'm not being a gear snob here. The idea behind this concept is simple: if you want a, let's say, Pino Palladino bass sound, you will get a P-Bass and put LaBella strings on it and run it straight trough an Ampeg amp; if you want Drake's vocal sound, you get a U87 and put it trough a Neve preamp and a CL-1B comp. Of course you don't have the right hand technique of Pino or Drake's voice, but the gear they record trough will get you in the ballpark.

I own a number of great mics, but I can't tell you how many times this mic is the mic of choice and even beats my more expensive neaumanns for some singers voices.. Its also great for acoustic guitars, percussions and 6 feet from a guitar amp w a 57 on the cabinet...

    Got the M4 because of you, David and I have yet to find even one thing I regret about it. Honestly for me, the less options I had with microphones, the better I got because it allowed me to focus more on technique than be obsessed with the gear. And for some reason these days, people just starting off tend to believe that condenser mics are the only mics that can give you a professional sound simply because they see everybody else with them. And that was me at one point. Spend a whole $500 on a mic only to find im happier with a $100 sm58. But the reason for that is not that the $500 mic was necessarily crap but I bought the $500 mic for all the wrong reasons to begin with. What did I learn from this? Always have your OWN reasons, not use someone elses and expect to be happy

  • @CHIBIXULTRA
    @CHIBIXULTRA 3 роки тому

    Great advice! Also, love the Bella Kelly stuff. The V4 is incredibly solid in that price point. If someone wants a vintage rock sound and has a sm57 laying around, try it. BRMC used it on plenty of charting songs. Dead Weather vocals were an old ampex dynamic through a guitar amp. Sometimes the scratch track makes the final mix. Probably not suitable for everyone though.

    Hi Dave, you talk about amazing MOTU preamps. I have an UltraLite mk4 and no matter which input I use (mic pre or line in), there is always pretty loud noise on the input. If I give the input a bit of gain, it goes up to a -30 dB peak at 18 kHz with a pretty big range around this. It's in fact so bad that I feel like I need to do a brickwall low pass on 17ish k to get rid of that peak tone at 18 whenever I record something. Do you have any idea if something may be wrong with me setup? A friend with an Apollo has much less noise on his inputs.

      One thing a lot of the pro audio channels overlook with mic recommendations: the environment that people are going to be recording in. LDC mics sound amazing, I love mine, BUT they pick up everything which can be a challenge in say, an apartment. I started using dynamic mics recording on tour in buses and hotel rooms and now I use them at home too. Have an SM7B which is great for male vocals, and I actually prefer a cheaper broadcast dynamic on my own voice: a Rode Procaster. Both need a lot of gain into the interface, but you can get a Fethead signal booster cheap for them if your pre isn’t up to it. Plugs right into the XLR and powered by phantom power

      @@GothicCoalition with that mic, at some point it will be really worth the investment. Even for tracking my own voice as a producer/songwriter I like switching mics up to get different textures on parts. If you don’t have a good dynamic mic though like the SM7B I highly recommend getting one. At first that mic is like “it sounds kinda muffled and boxy compared to a condenser mic”.... but then you compress the shit out of what you recorded with it and crank up some high freq bands without it getting harsh and realize *that’s* a sound you’ve heard a thousand times. If you can’t tell I’m a fan of dynamic mics haha.
