w.e.b.n. 102.7 cincinnati and double q 98.1 lexington played shooting star all the time. great band! my brother was 6 years older than me and our softball games were the same night, so he'd let me ride with him and his friends. thought i was so cool hanging out with high schoolers and me just being in the 5th grade, but that's when i started listening to harder rock and goodbye to poppy and disco fluff on q-102.1. my brother died 23 years ago and i miss him everyday . i hear all these songs from back in the day and it makes me smile. i thank him for changing the radio station and thanks for letting your little sister ride to the ball games with you even though i'm sure mom made you take me . thank you dfastpitch5 for posting this song. lots of great memories.
This song was huge on the radio back in its day! I was relating this to my wife, who's just six years my junior and never knew this song, and I broke down crying over it. Radio must change with the times, but sometimes that's a tragedy!
They got exposure in Los Angeles. My mid western friends are surprised by that. I bought it on cassette way back then. I'm sure it's still in my storage. *Very* underrated band.
Exactly! Everybody has certain songs and bands that make up the soundtrack of their lives when they were young, and this band does it for me, along with April Wine, Rush, Sammy Hagar, etc.
A HS friend introduced me to this terrific band around 1980. I strive to spread the word - and videos- to people I meet, and I always get a "I never heard of this band" response - along with a "I like it very much." It is unjust that they didn't earn the money or admiration they earned.
This takes me back to when I was 15, too geeky to have a date, so I sat home on the weekends listening to great rock and roll like this; I love looking back on this band!!
I should have pointed out that this account is in my wife's name, who wasn't born until 1985, and the memories are mine, no hers, because at 15 she was a total hottie who had lots of dates!
I came upon this video today. I'd been searching for this song perhaps for about 10 years here on UA-cam -- I'd not heard it in nearly 40 years when it was aired on the album oriented rock FM stations.
So much talent, so little exposure...what a tragedy. These guys have been one of my favorites for close to 40 years. Every bit as good as journey, reo, foreigner, My mom would Jam "break out".
This band was my favorite back in the 70's and 80's. I was fortunate that a coworker was good friends with the violinist and I was able to not only attend, but to go backstage at a few concerts in St. Louis. They rocked it and had a distinctive sound! While they were popular in the Midwest, it's sad that for whatever reason, they were under the radar nationally.
This somber but powerful song was my introduction to Shooting Star as played by Memphis Rock 103 WEGR, circa 1982. I've never forgotten, never will. R.I.P. Van McLain
What a masterpiece. Superb electric violin playing. As many people in the comments have said, Shooting Star should have gotten much more exposure for their great songs.
Man these guys were the shit they played our big fireworks show in Cincinnati Ohio local radio played the Hell out of there music I guess 20.000 ,people on the mighty Ohio shooting star you guys have fans in CINCINNATI
To quote below Niko ! Great Great Great Song ! If this was Led Zepplin would have been a smash hit ! Yes ! the Violin solo tears and chills and goose bumps ! Such a great song ! with such feeling, the words are amazing !!! LOVE IT !!!
Incredible album coming off the heels of there fantastic debut album. Shooting Star's 1st 2 albums can match up with a whole lot of bands in terms of quality songs.
The drumming is sorta unimaginative, but I love this song! I couldn't remember even the band's name two weeks ago. But it came to me this morning. A little Google time, looking at the first album... not it... then! Hang on for your life! Flesh and Blood!
I used to beg the local record shops to keep an eye out for "the next album by the band". One of the few bands I followed relentlessly back in my early 20's. Never got to see them live, but I had every single LP... and 3 copies of the Best of CD.
If you live in Kansas City KY 102 did the best they could have to support this band they played a lot of their music that's where I learned of them two of the guys went to my high school years before I did this band was great they never got rich or major famous but are way more talented than the crap out today
the only thing I can figure is they were right before or right at the beginning of MTV and did not make the cross over from Radio to MTV visual. What a Great Band saw them in the mid 80's at Bogarts in Cincy and they were off the hook.
Willy Mase I think you are on the right track. And although I'm from the Cincinnati area, unfortunately,I never made it to Bogarts to see them. It was a time when radio got very picky and each station was very reluctant to branch out play different bands from different types of music. It was true in Cincinnati. WEBN was all over this band and gave them a ton of support while Top Forty station WKRQ (Q-102) wouldn't touch these guys,as far as I know.
+Willy Mase, There's a comment above about a dispute with the record company, causing a lack of promotion and production of their music. I suspect that's the real problem.
There is a documentary on Shooting Star, They were screwed by the record company because a top executive saw them as a threat to his kids band, so under the contract the record company was only obligated to release something like 10,000 copies of their first album and subsequent albums. so even though they had many many hits you could not find their albums. I am not sure how many years they were bound to the contract, but ny the contract end the singer had developed cancer and as far as i know did survive. A Horrible story none the less.
Paul W Van came out well. I'm not sure if they're still a working band. There have been several iterations of the lineup that I have seen when they've performed in the Kansas City area, but nothing for the past few years. There are some You Tube videos from their induction to (hold your breath) the Kansas Rock and Roll Hall of Fame where Gary West, the original lead vocalist, sat in for a couple of songs. They're worth a view.
Well he's working hard from when he gets up in the morning Til the night when he comes home and goes to bed And he breaks his back to find a life he's proud to be living Lord knows he kills himself to get ahead And he fights for what he needs And he fights for what he believes And he fights and yes he bleeds He's not just a number, number He needs love to feel at ease He needs love for what his body needs He needs love no promises no guarantees He's here right now, you're here right now Only flesh and blood, only flesh and blood Well he wonders while passing through time with such sorrow And such fear and anger running through our lives Will it all be worth it when you're looking back tomorrow Soon you'll be older but you'll see through the same eyes He needs love to feel at ease He needs love for what his body needs He needs love no promises, no guarantees He'll soon be gone he's a mortal man He's only flesh and blood, only flesh and blood Look at him as he sees the sun It's always so life-giving Look at him as he tries to makes some sense Of the world in which we're living He's a person, he's got feelings, he's not made of iron and his soul's alive in everything he does They say his love is never meant to hurt, but it always happens He says he guess that's just the price you pay for love And so he tries to build a wall And he tries to stay above it all And when the time comes to say goodbye He tries to be logical, logical He needs love to feel alive He needs love (he looks into her eyes) He needs love (and softly shines) When he hears her voice, he can't help himself He's only flesh and blood, only flesh and blood Only flesh and blood Only flesh and blood Needs love, love, love

Glad I'm not the only one who cries to this.
I rocked to this band in the 80's and saw them live in a bar in Jersey! They were brilliant! Make a come back Shooting Star!
Very under rated band. I wish they would have gotten more exposure back in the day but I listened to them a lot. Another mid west band that was great.
They got exposure in Los Angeles. My mid western friends are surprised by that. I bought it on cassette way back then. I'm sure it's still in my storage.
*Very* underrated band.
Kinda hard to get alot of exposure when KANSAS came from the same place. I do TOTALLY agree with you though. WAAAAAAY underrated.
Many great road trips jamming to this on tape with a friend who has now passed , RIP Chaunch
RIP Van McLain March 3, 2018. Your music lives on forever. One of the best bands that was not heard by enough people. Sad day in rock and roll.
kdrew oh my i am a big Fan of his & this band, was he sick or suddenly pass, what a fun band, my 2nd fav band next to Zep!
Now thats sayin something!
As long as I was able to hear them I'm happy some bands aren't meant to be completely famous they will live on forever
Wow! I had forgotten about this album. I used to listen to the entire record over and again. This brings back memories.
this bands songs are a special part of the soundtrack of my life !
+z1inspector Big huge!
Exactly! Everybody has certain songs and bands that make up the soundtrack of their lives when they were young, and this band does it for me, along with April Wine, Rush, Sammy Hagar, etc.
Very underated.
fuckin great track from a fuckin great LP from a great fuckin band, the violin solo makes me cry every time

The violinist ROCKS this tune!
Favorite band always. Know it's real since early 1980's. Luv listening to all Shooting Star music.
An all time favorite...lyrics and music speak to my soul on this one!
This takes me back to when I was 15, too geeky to have a date, so I sat home on the weekends listening to great rock and roll like this; I love looking back on this band!!

There is no back in the day with these guys... They are eternal for the music in tenders.
This is the greatest band ever, period! This brings it back from the early 80s with Triumph, April Wine, Saxon, and the Heavy Metal soundtrack!
Good band but not even close.
Zebra
You are correct sir!! YES!!!!! Don't forget Axe, Utopia, and Kim Mitchel
Absolutely right! This was their best album!
I'd compare Shooting Star more to bands like Kansas.
Another great band that for whatever reason was under the radar I'm still listening this should have been a top 10 hit
I came upon this video today. I'd been searching for this song perhaps for about 10 years here on UA-cam -- I'd not heard it in nearly 40 years when it was aired on the album oriented rock FM stations.
Indeed! great to hear this again. They used to play this on WMMS in Cleveland Oh. I requested it all the time.
So much talent, so little exposure...what a tragedy.
These guys have been one of my favorites for close to 40 years.
Every bit as good as journey, reo, foreigner,
My mom would Jam "break out".
Thanks for posting!!!! I listened to this whole album back in 1981....great times and great song! I didn't think I could find this one anymore!
This band was my favorite back in the 70's and 80's. I was fortunate that a coworker was good friends with the violinist and I was able to not only attend, but to go backstage at a few concerts in St. Louis. They rocked it and had a distinctive sound! Gary West is the vocalist on this song. The guy could flat out sing! Great band from the Midwest, with a Kansas influence!

That song is awesome takes me back to the partying back in the day

Thank you for uploading this. It brings me back to buying my first car, and the cassettes I played to death. I loved their music.
What a masterpiece. Superb electric violin playing. As many people in the comments have said, Shooting Star should have gotten much more exposure for their great songs.

Such a rock and roll violin!!
One of those nice nice songs which can carry me completely away when I'm playing it on the violin...
Great song about being young and in love, finding your way in the world.
This song makes me wish i had stayed 18 forever.

Man these guys were the shit they played our big fireworks show in Cincinnati Ohio local radio played the Hell out of there music I guess 20.000 ,people on the mighty Ohio shooting star you guys have fans in CINCINNATI
From about 35 miles from cincy, howdy.
They were excellent. A lot of people confused them with Kansas.
@@larenzofaltner3810 :They were NOT music fans obviously.
I love this band!
To quote below Niko ! Great Great Great Song ! If this was Led Zepplin would have been a smash hit ! Yes ! the Violin solo tears and chills and goose bumps ! Such a great song ! with such feeling, the words are amazing !!! LOVE IT !!!

Yeah back then Q-102 was more likely to play pop & disco no good R & R, WTUE, out of Dayton I believe, and WSAI 96 FM rocked also!
Lucky...
Southern Ohio here. 👋
@@bluesrocker79 one more reason why i never listened to Q102.
Just true music..i have every album at least 3 of each

They could have toured USA like Rush …maybe poor management or that was a shooting star💫
1981'soundtrack in NW Oregon. Plus I got to see them for $2.92. Rising star concert for KGON.
very few vocalist's whose vocal chords are as strong as any instrument!!!!
Good band from Michigan. 👍
Kevin Halligan kansas
These guys were good, most people don't know them...I'm not sure why I know them. Like Point Blank!?

They can take our Flesh and Blood Cuz I'll never take our souls
This band always reminded me of " Kansas", which isn't a bad thing at all!
La intro amo la intro😎
StJoseph Mo is proud of this band
The musical equivalent of a well aged rye: smoooooooth!!!! finishing with a kick!!!
Where is the great singer from the storm that sang show me the Way?
Excellent album cover. U think ?. Shooting star. **
If their indeed a documentry out there of this bad, SOMEONE POST THE LINK , please!!!
Kansas lite.
I had this record
Stan fast people
Come clean it come out of The Matrix
Music has turned to trash these days. I am glad I got to experience real musical genius.
this song could go on for 5 for minutes with that violin jamming away...
Great song, but shitty audio quality
Well he's working hard from when he gets up in the morning
Til the night when he comes home and goes to bed
And he breaks his back to find a life he's proud to be living
Lord knows he kills himself to get ahead
And he fights for what he needs
And he fights for what he believes
And he fights and yes he bleeds
He's not just a number, number
He needs love to feel at ease
He needs love for what his body needs
He needs love no promises no guarantees
He's here right now, you're here right now
Only flesh and blood, only flesh and blood
Well he wonders while passing through time with such sorrow
And such fear and anger running through our lives
Will it all be worth it when you're looking back tomorrow
Soon you'll be older but you'll see through the same eyes
He needs love to feel at ease
He needs love for what his body needs
He needs love no promises, no guarantees
He'll soon be gone he's a mortal man
He's only flesh and blood, only flesh and blood
Look at him as he sees the sun
It's always so life-giving
Look at him as he tries to makes some sense
Of the world in which we're living
He's a person, he's got feelings, he's not made of iron
and his soul's alive in everything he does
They say his love is never meant to hurt, but it always happens
He says he guess that's just the price you pay for love
And so he tries to build a wall
And he tries to stay above it all
And when the time comes to say goodbye
He tries to be logical, logical
He needs love to feel alive
He needs love (he looks into her eyes)
He needs love (and softly shines)
When he hears her voice, he can't help himself
He's only flesh and blood, only flesh and blood
Only flesh and blood
Only flesh and blood
Needs love, love, love
LOVE this song!
