A dying actor plays a dying man, giving advice to those who still have time to fix their lives and do better. Truly honorable, and it makes this scene that much more powerful.

To me this is the most emotional part of the entire series along with the part where Johnny is telling Miguel how he loves him and wants to be a father but keeps screwing it up and Miguel says "you're doing fine....I love you" and Johnny accidentally calls him Robby.

I love that line and this scene so much! I can really relate to the late Robert Garrison in this scene because I have been battling and fighting a terminal illness myself, so the "you still have time" really speaks to me!🥺

Rob Garrison died on September 27, 2019, at the age of 59.

He must have already been diagnosed with his terminal illness when they wrote the script for this episode. He really did seem very convincingly terminally ill - now we know why. You thought he was acting in this conversation with Johnny - no, he was speaking for himself through his character. This episode has multiple levels of "meta" / subtle fourth-wall breaking. The guy who has a terminal illness and dies is played by a guy who has a terminal illness and dies, and he's famous for saying "get him a bodybag" and he gets a bodybag, then so does his actor.

I think the greatest thing the series did was show how people can change over time, but also, how one single solitary moment in your life can make you rethink everything.
For the Kai, the turning point was that night at the tournament, even before the parking lot incident, you can slowly see all of them doubt Kreese's tactics and stand in disbelief at what he ordered both Bobby and Johnny to do.
Then, when push came to shove, Kreese turned on all of them and it was Miyagi who stepped in and saved them. I still remember thinking as a kid that Tommy's epiphany came right at that moment when Miyagi told Kreese to let Johnny go, as Tommy showed his first ever sign of respect by repeating "Yeah, MR MIYAGI's right, let him go!".

I know his death is sad, But think about it. What more could Tommy have asked for? (A) He did NOT die in the hospital. (B) He was with his friends. (C) He died totally redeemed. (D) He had a last adventure with his friends. (E) And he got to punch someone out (as a hero). This was the pure opposite of a "Game of Thrones" meaningless surprise death,

1:41 "Time. You still have time." It's not just what he says, but the delivery behind such a line. Then you learn a few months after this episode... Rob Garrison wasn't an actor, he was the real deal (the poor guy really WAS dying, that's why Tommy's final moments seemed so convincing).
Really hoping to see more of the Cobra Kai guys reuniting in season 3; seeing how poorly things are going for Johnny by the end of season 2, Bobby and Jimmy are likely the only ones Johnny can still trust, and similarly they're the only ones who still have any faith in him.

According to his coworkers, Rob Garrison wasn't sick at the time, he was just playing the part of a guy in his 50s who thought he had decades left and found out the hard way that as Death said, "you get the same as everyone else: You get a lifetime." He got sick a couple months after the episode aired (almost a year after it was shot) and died a couple months after that.

This whole series has been absolutely fantastic with showing who Johnny is inside. His high school buddies are still there for him, even though his whole life has been a mess. When Tommy says "You're the champ Johnny" it's reminding him that yes, he still is the champ. He just forgot when he got beat by Daniel in that tournament. We all forget sometimes that we're the champ when life gives us a kick in the teeth.

I must've watched The Karate Kid a thousand times as kid. My dad eventually hid the tape in kitchen cupboards above the microwave. This scene hurts, not just because of Tommy's passing, but because Dad and I would gather around a fire at our hilltop cabin on summer nights and speak of history, philosophy, human nature, and play chess. I was born late in his life... While my elder half-brothers knew the hunter, fisherman, the veteran, and hardass barfly, I knew the artist, the poet, the sage... Now? I'm into my late twenties, still young, but feeling old and tired already.
