I think Mr Miyagi was like Chozen or Johnny back in the day, he wanted to beat Kim and he did. Meanwile Kim might've been a pretty cool dude, untill Miyagi defeated him mockingly. Kim created Cobra Kai as a result of that beating, and it makes Miyagi realize that he needs to become a better man. It would also mean Mr Miyagi's past actions are the reason for Cobra Kai even existing.
Very good thought I like it! Maybe they fought in the tournament, and Kim injured Miyagi on his head, thats why there was blood on Miyagis bandana. Then Kim tried to kill Miyagi with one of these snake cobra strikes, which are executed like The Silver-Bullet, and MIyagi countered it with The Drum and beat Kim down, like Daniel did beat Chozen down with that technique. From a technical standpoint, The Drum is the perfect counter technique to these snake bite strikes, I mean the ones we saw Silver and Kreese perform. And I also think its very possible in the end it will come out, that young Miyagi was like young Johnny. They have many similarities: - Both didnt get the girl they loved (Yukie and Ali), - both knocked up a woman who was only a second choice (Shannon and the girl MIyagi knocked up), - both suffered same tragedy, Miyagi lost the girl and the baby, Johnny left Shannon and Robby, - both liked to drink and fight from time to time, - both worked as janitor when Daniel and Miguel came in their lives. This is my take. REMEMBER ITS 1947! Miyagi just got back from WW2 probably lost many friends and even had to kill some enemy combatants. While over there Miyagi lost his wife and his newborn son, his whole world just collapsed and had nothing much else left probably couldnt even get back to Okinawa. Miyagi hit the lowest point in his life anybody could hit and unfortunately went through a dark period where he didnt care and its that darkness that molded him into the righteous morally sound man we saw in the first movie
Here's some advice for Daniel going through the shock of learning Mr Miyagi was once a liar and a criminal. His best karate is still inside him. This is a very good time to use it.
The confusion of 1918 vs 1924. Based on this clip, Daniel looks at the photo of him and Mr. Miyagi (photo from KARATE KID 3). In Karate Kid 3, we find out that Miyagi was part of the 442nd combat regiment of World War II. Doing the math, if Mr. Miyagi was born in 1924, he would be around 15 years old at the time WWII begins 9/1/1939. However, if he was "born in 1918", that puts him at the age of 21 years old. So my theory was, if it's not obvious, Mr. Miyagi lied about his age and his name (using Keisuke Vs. Nariyoshi) to join in the army. Now how it all connects with what's to come, I don't know, but I am sure going to want to watch.

According to his tombstone, Miyagi was born in 1925. In KK2, he reminds Sāto that he was "Only 18 years old" when he left Okinawa. In this case, Miyagi left in 1943. In Hawaii, he meets his first wife and then the following year, in 1944, she dies of complications of childbirth. Still the question is, why does Daniel say 1924?

I have to admit I'm a little sad the way the writers have changed much to Mr miyagi I'm sad to see this change a lot of ways because I grew up with Mr miyagi always loved the character thought he was full of wonderful wisdom and advice that's the Mr miyagi I want to remember forever!
As i just posted, remember its 1947 he just got back from the war, he lost his wife and newborn son(crappy medical staff no doubt and that was due to racism) probably lost some friends in the war and he killed people to. At this point in his young life he has hit a very low point and being a veteran most likely suffering from PTSD and losing his family he didnt care much at that point but its this low point that would drive him to be the good man we see in the first film but some of that darkness lingered i.e. when he got drunk on his wedding anniversary
I hear you, OP, but at the same time I felt as though Mr. Miyagi didn't get much of a backstory other than a few snippets of dialogue in the 4 films he appeared in. And giving him a character arc the way they've given Johnny Lawrence one in Cobra Kai makes him _much_ more relatable.
It shows that no one is perfect, mistakes are made but the lessons learned from those mistakes is what makes one strong to move forward and not let past mistakes haunt us. It's what we call being wise.
It does seem kinda repetitive with him & Johnny, but the fact that the show is addressing "Keisuke Miygai" makes me think that they're setting forth the path for Daniel to finally meet Hilary Swank's Julie Pierce.
Mr. Miyagi said he never fought in the tournament, but he was the captain of his team in the Sekai Taikai. So he lied about fighting in tournaments. The greatest tournament in the world. No less. The blood on the headband makes me wonder if it was one of his opponents.

It's likely that the necklace belonged to his wife and the guy he beat up could've stolen it off her after she had passed. He was likely at the internment camps as a guard. Im pretty sure its nothing but a misunderstanding. The writers would never dare to tarnish the reputation of such a beloved character. This is just to explain why the inconsistency in Miyagi’s first name in the 4th movie and a plot device to finally introduce Julie Pierce.

Agreed. The latter bullet point would also factor into Mr. Han helping Miyagi out, since he wound up taking a trip to China at some point in his life. It would all be tied together by the final letter he wrote to Yukie, which was shown in season 3. The letter would reinforce that, for years, Miyagi felt lost because he often looked at signs -- and not people -- to show him in the right path until he met Daniel in 1984.

I did some digging After reading Mr. Miyagi’s news clipping on the assault. Let’s start off with the name they gave Miyagi. We know Miyagi helped someone Connected to the gym. They said his name was keisuke which means a respectful helper. Next we have the person he supposedly assaulted. Jim watkins of lodi. The name watkins can also mean another name which is walter. If you put the name together you have Jim walter. Which was a corporation back at 1946. The news clipping is a year later 1947. The sign reads Jim Walter corporation homes built on your property no shortage of mortgage money here. Maybe the corporation was collecting payment and do to them not being able to pay. They tried taking that valuable necklace and Miyagi stopped them but they lied and said he stole it. Im lost on the lodi. I know it means idol spelled backwards but not sure where that leads to.
That wouldn't have a strong bearing on Mr Miyagi's character. The assault victim was able to give a full name identification of his attacker which means he knew Mr Miyagi beforehand. The necklace was likely a possession of his wife and Watkins took it from her after her death in the camp and Mr Miyagi wanted to retrieve it. Watkins likely provoked Mr Miyagi by insulting his dead family which resulted in his beating.
Yeah Daniel lapusso would be glazing Mr Miyagi so goddamn hard throughout the show and it’s annoying as fuck, he even worships him like he’s was the second coming of Christ. The show is addressing "Keisuke Miyagi." Only one of Miyagi's pupils (as far as we know), was introduced to him as such. And incidentally, much like Tori needing fighting as an outlet for her anger over her mother's death, this pupil also needed fighting as an outlet for her anger after her own parents' death: Julie Pierce. She's gotta meet up with Daniel, and perhaps talk some sense into Tori. Definitely gotta be some roundabout way for Daniel to follow the breadcrumbs that lead to her. Though they do have to address why she potentially wasn't at Miyagi's funeral, but hey... this show has had a wicked way of both poking fun at, AND honoring the different facets of the Miyagi-Verse lore lol.
I know for a FACT that we all actually wanted to see a photo of Mr. Mijagi and Julie Pierce!!!! But no. Instead we get ANOTHER secret backstory about mr. Mijagi. Come on man.
Admittedly not a huge fan of this subplot, at least not at this point in the storyline. We knew as early as the very first film that Miyagi wasn’t perfect and had demons, why bring something like this into play with so few episodes left to wrap up the ENTIRE series. Also don’t like how the characters were written within the context of this plot device, especially Daniel and Johnny.
Its probably there to get it through Daniels head that his mentor wasnt perfect and that if he didnt go through those dark periods in his life that he wouldnt have been the mentor that Daniel needed. But there could be more to the story.

The confusion of 1918 vs 1924. Based on this clip, Daniel looks at the photo of him and Mr. Miyagi (photo from KARATE KID 3). In Karate Kid 3, we find out that Miyagi was part of the 442nd combat regiment of World War II. Doing the math, if Mr. Miyagi was born in 1924, he would be around 15 years old at the time WWII begins 9/1/1939. However, if he was "born in 1918", that puts him at the age of 21 years old. So my theory was, if it's not obvious, Mr. Miyagi lied about his age and his name (using Keisuke Vs. Nariyoshi) to join in the army. Now how it all connects with what's to come, I don't know, but I am sure going to want to watch.
Is it possible that Miyagi lied about being born in 1925 and was really born in 1918 because that would make better since given that he looked older than 59 in The Karate Kid

In Hawaii, he meets his first wife and then the following year, in 1944, she dies of complications of childbirth. Still the question is, why does Daniel say 1924?

I have to admit I'm a little sad the way the writers have changed much to Mr miyagi I'm sad to see this change a lot of ways because I grew up with Mr miyagi always loved the character thought he was full of wonderful wisdom and advice that's the Mr miyagi I want to remember forever!
As i just posted, remember its 1947 he just got back from the war, he lost his wife and newborn son(crappy medical staff no doubt and that was due to racism) probably lost some friends in the war and he killed people to. At this point in his young life he has hit a very low point and being a veteran most likely suffering from PTSD and losing his family he didnt care much at that point but its this low point that would drive him to be the good man we see in the first film but some of that darkness lingered i.e. when he got drunk on his wedding anniversary
The writers confirmed they aren’t undoing the good Mr Miyagi did. They are making him realistic into how he becomes the great man we see him as
I hear you, OP, but at the same time I felt as though Mr. Miyagi didn't get much of a backstory other than a few snippets of dialogue in the 4 films he appeared in. And giving him a character arc the way they've given Johnny Lawrence one in Cobra Kai makes him _much_ more relatable.

I feel there's more to the story, though I'm hoping Mr. Miyagi did had a darker, sketchy past and decided to become a better man that he was today.
What do we expect that is dark?
It shows that no one is perfect, mistakes are made but the lessons learned from those mistakes is what makes one strong to move forward and not let past mistakes haunt us. It's what we call being wise.

When watching Daniel & Johnny argue about their karate styles again I was like “didn’t they both come to terms with each others styles 2 seasons ago?”
It does seem kinda repetitive with him & Johnny, but the fact that the show is addressing "Keisuke Miygai" makes me think that they're setting forth the path for Daniel to finally meet Hilary Swank's Julie Pierce.
They may also want to ensure that the late Pat Morita is still remembered and not forgotten as a character.

It's likely that the necklace belonged to his wife and the guy he beat up could've stolen it off her after she had passed. He was likely at the internment camps as a guard. He also was able to identify him by his full name which shows that he knew him before the robbery.

Agreed. The latter bullet point would also factor into Mr. Han helping Miyagi out, since he wound up taking a trip to China at some point in his life. It would all be tied together by the final letter he wrote to Yukie, which was shown in season 3. The letter would reinforce that, for years, Miyagi felt lost because he often looked at signs -- and not people -- to show him in the right path until he met Daniel in 1984.

In back to the future, Doc's father changed their names due to the first world war likely because of the backlash that German immigrants were facing from the American populace.
I do believe that Mr Miyagi faked his age so that he could enlist. His real name is Nariyoshi and his real birthday is 1925, the passport just has forged information.

I did some digging After reading Mr. Miyagi’s news clipping on the assault.
Let’s start off with the name they gave Miyagi. We know Miyagi helped someone Connected to the gym. They said his name was keisuke which means a respectful helper. Next we have the person he supposedly assaulted. Jim watkins of lodi. The name watkins can also mean another name which is walter. If you put the name together you have Jim walter. Which was a corporation back at 1946. The news clipping is a year later 1947. The sign reads Jim Walter corporation homes built on your property no shortage of mortgage money here. Maybe the corporation was collecting payment and do to them not being able to pay. They tried taking that valuable necklace and Miyagi stopped them but they lied and said he stole it. Im lost on the lodi. I know it means idol spelled backwards but not sure where that leads to.
That wouldn't have a strong bearing on Mr Miyagi's character. The assault victim was able to give a full name identification of his attacker which means he knew Mr Miyagi beforehand. The necklace was likely a possession of his wife and Watkins took it from her after her death in the camp and Mr Miyagi wanted to retrieve it. Watkins likely provoked Mr Miyagi by insulting his dead family which resulted in his beating.

I 100% totally understand that Mr miyagi was like a father figure to Daniel in the original Karate Kid movies, because his dad died when he was little, but damn it’s been like 20 years, he needs to move on and let that man rest, he could remember his sensei all he wants and I understand that he’s trying to honor his legacy, but just worshipping like he’s the greatest man that ever walked the earth is not going to fix anything. “It’s just not the Miyagi do way” my ass, I’m in Johnny Lawerence’s side with this one 🙄

The show is addressing "Keisuke Miyagi." Only one of Miyagi's pupils (as far as we know), was introduced to him as such. And incidentally, much like Tori needing fighting as an outlet for her anger over her mother's death, this pupil also needed fighting as an outlet for her anger after her own parents' death: Julie Pierce. She's gotta meet up with Daniel, and perhaps talk some sense into Tori. Definitely gotta be some roundabout way for Daniel to follow the breadcrumbs that lead to her. Though they do have to address why she potentially wasn't at Miyagi's funeral, but hey... this show has had a wicked way of both poking fun at, AND honoring the different facets of the Miyagi-Verse lore lol.
I know for a FACT that we all actually wanted to see a photo of Mr. Mijagi and Julie Pierce!!!! But no. Instead we get ANOTHER secret backstory about mr. Mijagi. Come on man.
Admittedly not a huge fan of this subplot, at least not at this point in the storyline. We knew as early as the very first film that Miyagi wasn’t perfect and had demons, why bring something like this into play with so few episodes left to wrap up the ENTIRE series. Also don’t like how the characters were written within the context of this plot device, especially Daniel and Johnny.
Its probably there to get it through Daniels head that his mentor wasnt perfect and that if he didnt go through those dark periods in his life that he wouldnt have been the mentor that Daniel needed. But there could be more to the story.
As annoying as it is to see Daniel and Johnny butting heads, I hope they get their act together when the series is over
