That moment when you realize Quasimodo has been taller than Frollo this whole time was so good
Same with the slam of the trap door when Quasimodo closes it it's so good
Victims of abuse usually are.
wait, he’s taller than frollo? I didn’t think Quasimodo would be taller than his master Frolo! If he is, Frolo is going to comment that during the show lol and he’s going to say you’re taller than me. r
@@theenergetichopecat7006 Quazi is for sure taller it's just hard to tell with the hunch back
Yes I’ve noticed now that you pointed it out. I never thought about that before, if he’s taller than his master, his masters and gonna like it at all! Lol.
I think the most profound moment for me is when the actor who plays Quasimodo walks on stage and sings "who is the monster and who is the man?" Before transforming into Quasi right in front of us. Think of the symbolism. There was nothing at all distinguishing him from the other actors on the stage, he was no different from them, until his appearance changed. It embodies the message of the entire show in less than 30 seconds.
I really wanted the ending when they sing that part to have him be center and as he’s signing that line, spotlight on him and to stand completely upright and relax his posture in statue lighting. I also pictured statue like lighting and posture for Esmeralda and Pheoubus as if time had gone on and we’re back at the legend.
It beyond captures the spirit of Hugo's message, and why I consider this the most faithful adaptation of Notre Dame. Phoebus and Esmeralda are vastly more capable and beautiful, but THAT to me is the spirit of adapting Victor Hugo - that we should evolve for our millennium, and to quote, 'the new will kill the old'.
I adore that part!
Just did this at Youngstown OH ( set design and construction) This is the best show I have ever worked on, and I've been doing this for 25+ years. It's a handful but ... wow!/
Also the fact that the one who dressed Quasimodo and made him the hunchback was Frollo himself. Becomes even deeper
I thank the master who filmed this quality bootleg for us all. If this show never makes it to Broadway…at least we have this.
@@alisond929 I know.
He uses bits of sign language because he cant hear well.. Thats a really nice touch
Good catch👍
Would've been better if he used French Sign Language instead of American Sign Language in my opinion.
I love Quasimodo using sign language. I mean if he is a character who uses sign language it’s because he is very timid man that’s pretty cool. I love it! Wish they could’ve incorporated that in the 96 Disney film.
@@araw_buwan then the american viewers with hearing disabilities (of varying degrees) wouldn't understand it.
@@araw_buwan Michael Arden, the actor who played Quasimodo, knows ASL. He didn't learn it for this production. Besides, the production is in English, why translate it to French and then French SL when I'm willing to bet they didn't have anyone to consult on its accuracy?
34:42 I love how one of the first words Esmerelda says to Quasi when she saves him is “don’t be afraid” i think the choice is words really help support why Quasi really liked Esmerelda. Realistically, he was only read Bible stories. And what do angles say when they show up? “Be not afraid” Quasimodo did say she danced like an Angel, and her rescuing him? She’s his guardian Angel.
Idk lol, as someone who was raised on the Bible, I noticed it and thought that it really helped with motivation and stuff lol
I think thats like to represent that quasi saw her as an angel from the start, but in the last 2 times i watched this i didnt even realise she says that!
“The wicked shall not go unpunished” AND “What makes a monster and what makes a man” are the two GREATEST reprises of this entire musical.
Still hate that Frozen was chosen over this for Broadway play.
Frozen Broadway is definitely a better production than the movie but I agree that Hunchback of Norte Dame should have gotten a chance on Broadway. Thankfully it’s immortalized through this bootleg which only makes me wish for more professional recordings of live shows and putting them on streaming services/digital like Hamilton
I wish I could’ve seen it at the La Jolla Playhouse. But I have seen it on UA-cam. I want this musical to go to Broadway and I want Michael Arden as Quasimodo and Patrick page as Frolo and Sarah Renee has Esmeralda and Andrew as P and the entire cast to play Their respective characters again.
Troll Time...
actually they were to play alongside each other because they both had potential to be great musicals and were too good to be ignored. But In Light of the pandemic Frozen despite its outstanding performances in the time its been on stage will not return, and instead be replaced with musical based on King Of The Hill . And In light of recent Controversies The Hunchback Of Notre Dame will not be going to Broadway as they see it is too controversial, and will be replaced with a musical based on Beavis And Butthead.

@@theenergetichopecat7006 i heard it was never meant for broadway, only to be liscenced out which is more profitable than broadway since then anyone can perform it as long as they can afford the rights to it, and if hundreds or thousands of theatres are buying the rights it adds up to more than broadway ticket sales
It was too expensive. I’ve heard of it were on broadway they’d have had to pay the entire choir actors rates. In order to keep the choir they had to do it off broadway.
Frollos actor is so good just the way he portrays stiffness and maintains his poise its cool to watch.
I love him, he's so good
Patrick page, man, he’s awesome
@@Raveirtheblue but obviously nothing beats his performance as The Green Goblin in the universal hit musical, Spiderman: Turn off the Dark
@@collin3987 ah yes green goblin. Clearly better than Frodo and Hades. His best performance yet.
Patrick Page has the most incredible voice! He is also Hades in Hadestown. 😍🥰
Anybody else notice how Quasi speaks straight when he's by himself (or with the gargoyles), but then his speech is fractured around other people? It shows how he thinks compared to how he looks to other people; That he's totally capable/ competent, but comes off as the opposite to everyone else.
That's an awesome little touch!
I didn't even realize what it meant until him and Phoebus argue with each other about rescuing Esmeralda...on my third or fourth watch
The animation doesn't do this. Also, this is a much more interesting take on Frollo
I also noticed Quasi sometimes uses little bits and pieces of signlanguage when he feels he cant express himself enough
through words!
@Megan Maclean élève
I know! Im really happy they let that show as well!
I did Tarzan a few years back and noticed the same thing! It's really neat.
As an immigrant, I can relate so much to this... (I'm not comparing myself to Quasimodo, of course, just to this aspect of the role...)
Frollo is much closer to the book version here. He's more complex and even slightly sympathetic in spots. But he's still torn between faith and duty, and his human needs.
i honestly don't know why this didn't reach Broadway. This is gold.
I read an interview where the director was forced to cut the choir if they were to go to Broadway. He chose not to cut them. I think he made the right choice.
@@josiahlkareck4271 he definitely made the right choice
I wish they at least did a professional taping of this whole show like Hamilton
unfortunately because the full choir is onstage the entire time, they would have to be paid as union actors which is quite expensive, and the songs truly aren’t the same without the choir
this is a masterpiece! We need to have it on Broadway! We need Quasimodo story told everywhere! And I think people should know it!
This really should have gone to broadway instead of Frozen smh
true, but atleast Ciarra Renée was in Broadways Frozen for awhile before the whole covid fiasco
I like Frozen the Musical, but I 100% agree
MTI should make a Jr. version of this!
Yes, but I can see why they did it. Frozen was the safe choice. This would have very much upset the kiddie’s parents.
frozen is amazing too, specially with the original broadway songs. no need to put one down to compliment another. they both should be on broadway!
I like that they created a blood bond between Quasimodo and Frollo, it gives Frollo much more motivation to keep him alive other than fear for his Immortal Soul
It’s closer to the original story
It also makes his abusive relationship with Quasi even worse, because you shouldn’t hurt anybody like that, but you especially shouldn’t hurt family like that.
@@JameZayer I read the book a long time ago, but from what I remember Quasimodo was left in someone else's cradle by the gypsies because he was so ugly, and they stole the baby who had been in the cradle and raised her as a gypsy instead (later it's revealed that baby was actually Esmeralda). The family whose baby was stolen later left Quasimodo on the doorstep of the church. I'm not sure if it was ever mentioned that he was related to Frollo (his younger brother was still alive in the book), but again it's been a long time since I've read it.
@00ammy00 Nah they just did this to strengthen Frollo's hatred of Roma people
I heard this was done because it is a common misconception that Romani people steal children, they did this so that people wouldn’t come to that conclusion.
The moment he puts on the quasimodo costume is a powerful reminder that despite his outward appearance, the person inside is is the same.
man frollo is so much more gross in this one I really couldn't handle his scenes with Esmerelda and I think that's great. It's due to the fact that in this version he's not a villain from the beginning but a well meaning and slightly misguided man who could've gone either way. He becomes a villain over time as he is poisoned by denial and his inability to hold himself accountable for his actions.
Much like Frollo in the books
In the book, Quasimodo is described as having a wart growing over one of his eyes. This renders him half-blind in addition to being mostly deaf. I think this is what he is alluding to in "Made of Stone" when he says "My one human eye will never more be dry".
Yup! If you also look closely, Michael smeared some of the black paint on his right eyelid! I think that may signify that blind eye
So is no one going to talk about how when they all walk on stage at the end as their “true” selves, Claude Frollo comes out dressed as his younger self- the broken, lost, moral young man? Because that really got me. Best tragic villain of all time!
In this production Frollo is played by Patrick Page, who was nominated for a Tony for playing Hades in Hadestown! He would make a FANTASTIC Judge Turpin in Sweeney Todd.
Omg! He would be a fantastic judge! I never even thought of that holy crap
No way?! He plays hades too? Omg this guy is incredible!
And Scar on Broadway! Patrick Page is a man for any baritone (or anyone at all) to admire
Believe it or not he also plays Lumiére.

I love Frollo's actor here so much. He's incredible. Especially the delivery of "We must show kindness to this... creature." It really sells the point of the character trying to preach to the others to be kind while simultaneously dehumanizing Quasimodo. He clearly doesn't really see him as an equal, as a human, and holds some disdain towards him for being ugly even if he's telling others to show kindness to Quasi
I love this musical more than I can express. The “yes you do” during the finale is sooooo good Im screaming.
I bet when he is singing hellfire he is also thinking of his birthday and the gypsy Quasimodo's mother and how he tried to seduce him. He is thinking about Esmeralda and his first encounter with a gypsy.

Yes, made of stone gave me chills! Literal chills! Quasimodo has so much emotion in his voice! During the song he’s actually try not to cry, when he’s singing, at certain parts, I could hear that he was literally holding back tears while singing. I don’t know if he refuses to let them out, or if he’s just trying to stay strong while singing, or I don’t know why, but I felt that was an interesting thing I wanted to point out. I guess it shows that Quasimodo can be very strong, and tough, but very sensitive still and emotional.
@@diamondbaker5331 thats so coool
Dude, this has the same potential as Les Mis. They need to put this on Broadway!!
I guess you like Victor Hugo, then
@@ShukaHusk yep!
This makes sense, since Victor Hugo wrote both Les Mis and Hunchback. I'm curious to see a musical adaptation of 'The Man Who Laughs', another book by Victor. I haven't read the full story, but I heard a little bit of it. And how the story is about "the parallel between the mutilation of one man and of human experience, Hugo touches on a recurrent theme in his work "la misère", and criticizes both the nobility which in boredom resorts to violence and oppression and the passivity of the people, who submit to it and prefer laughter to struggle." And knowing how shows like 'Squid Game' are getting popular and relevant today, I feel like a musical like 'The Man Who Laughs' would be good too.
I sure hope it gets to broadway someday soon (pun intended)! Unfortunately there's a lot of logistical stuff holding it back. Namely, in negotiations to take it to broadway, they realized the choir would not be insured by the actors' union. Stephen Schwartz (rightfully) argued that the show wouldn't be half of what it is without the choir, so it's been in a sort of stalemate ever since. It sucks because this would be a LEGEND on broadway. Hopefully one day we can get a pro shot on Disney+, but I'm not holding my breath for that either since Disney Corporation would never take a risk in the year of our lord 2021. This is in my top 2 musicals of all time, competing for number 1 with Les Miserables ironically enough lol.
it deserves A spot on Broadway. They need to put it on Broadway! Quasimodo would be so proud that his story is being told by the public. I think his story should go and be told everywhere. It is up to us as the people to never forget this musical. And I think we should never forget Quasimodo or his story.
It's such an interesting detail for the bells. When Quasi talks to the bells, the bell "speaking" will ring before the actor/actress speaks. I never noticed that before, I love that subtle/not really subtle detail in this production. It's so cool!
I love that! The bells are speaking before the actor or actress is speaking. Quasimodo speaks to the bells the bells ring the actor speaks as they ring I just love it!
OMG 😲
I love that return of "the wicked shall not go unpunished"
Quasi just towering over Frolo is so powerful and so impactful. I can't imagine this moment any other way

I do wonder what are the lyrics of this version of the Tavern Song.
Anyone else cry through literally the entire musical??
Me as I wipe my eyes...."No. :("
I’ll let you know that I stayed tough until the finale, and I only cried for 20 minutes.
Yess, it’s impossible not to 🤧
Legit sobbing
I don't care how many times I watch this
I always cry lol
I do love the detail that in this one it seems as if Frolo genuinely does to some extent care about Quasimodo.
All throughout the musical there are these pink moments where he genuinely seems to care, like where he stops the crowd from attacking him, mentioning how the world is cruel and uncaring but seeming to tell this out of genuine concern.
Of course you also get the impression that he's doing it for himself to save his reputation but they're still at the end of the day this sort of undertone that he cares with Quasimodo being the last family he has left and feels indebted to take care of as a way to honor his brother.
Frollo’s reputation is hurt more so by keeping Quasi in the bell tower than exiling him at all, at least based by the reactions of the congregants when he was made the king of fools during Tupsi Turvy day. Thus in the end, Frollo’s love for his brother was so great that he was willing to keep Quasi for him, maybe trying to protect his religious ego he justified it as being a challenge from god.
I love in 55:00 when Frollos tries to imprint his lustful thoughts onto the innocence of Quasimodo. It shows that from the beginning he never took responsibility for his feelings towards Esmeralda

If you wonder why this didn't go to Broadway (and it seems a few also ask why Frozen was instead), there's a simple reason for both.
The tone was simply too dark. The risk was just too high. Frozen was chosen because it didn't have such a dark tone and it had proven to be far more profitable. Besides, Frozen's tonal problems are far easier to fix than Hunchback's.
While it is a shame we couldn't get both on Broadway, I'm glad the Frozen one was good (despite my expectations, I didn't think it'd come close to the original) and Hunchback still got this stage musical.
I heard it was also because if this went to Broadway they would have to get rid of the choir and the creator didn't want to sacrifice the choir for it to go on Broadway.
@@littlemissroses202that’s the reason. The entire huge choir would have to had been paid as union members which is very expensive (although worth it imo) but Disney basically told Alan Menken he’d have to cut the choir and he refused so it didn’t transfer. 20:35 for anyone who is also obbsessed with the bench trick
“Someday” is so beautiful 😭❤️!
46:00 I MELT when he sings "No, my lovely, nor should we"
OMG. Quasi and Phoebus, I'm fangirling for both of them. They're so good...
This is beautiful. I hope I can watch it live one day somewhere-that score and the choir must have just been incredible.
I never realised before, but Captain Phoebus would make a perfect Adolin. The characters are so similar... and that would mean Clopin is Wit, which I can completely see. Damn Worldhoppers...
Made of Stone is E-P-I-C
every day i thank whatever powers that be that there are people brave enough to record shows- thank you for the opportunity to watch this.
I always loved that they took the weakest part of the movie, the gargoyles, and made them one of the best parts of the show. Such a great use of the one good line they had "we just thought that you were made of something stronger."
And 2:00:22. Chills every time. So unsettling yet darkly satisfying.
I can't tell you what this musical means to me. The Hunchback of Notre Dame has been my absolute favorite movie for a long time. Hearing the musical for the first time was life changing. Getting to watch this brings me so much joy and comfort and emotion. Hopefully I'll get to see it live someday, but until then thank you for bringing us this
After having seen the Disney’s 1996 (and am glad it was made) and this performance, it has got me wondering what would it have been like if Disney had done The Phantom of the Opera back then.
If Disney ever did a live action version, I hope they do this adaptation. I love the animated movie but I think this one would work better as live action
I hope the dont, because I know theyll ruin it, theyll probably center the whole movie to Esmeralda being an invincible strong female minority repressed by society
The whole thing is amazing and deep and whatever but can we talk about how smooth it was when Saint Aphrodisius put his head on
someday and the finale make me cry every time! also, does anyone else love frederick as if he were a lead, too? he's just so wholesome🥺
Ciara Renee's "God Help the Outcasts" gave it a Belle-like number, the feels "Is This Home?" She HAS to play Belle! Or possibly Plumette... (I know she also played Peggy and Maria... and Elsa)
I have the soundtrack, which is incredible, but I always wanted to see the musical. It was so beautifully done, moved me to tears, I got chills too.
As you have noticed the Tavern Song did change between this production and
Papermill Playhouse. I am wondering what the lyrics of this version.
I can't believe I only just learnt this existed. I love how they married more book elements along with the Disney music. I'm just happy now I have another HOND/NDP musical to indulge in
27:38 I think I’m a lesbian now
She's beautiful
Honey I'm already a lesbian and now I'm 200% gayer
the power of ciara renée...
Ciara Renée is a literal icon
Sometimes I wonder if I’m faking my bisexuality.
Then I see this and think “oh yep, never mind”
IM WATCHING THIS Past THE 1 YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF COVID!!! ITS SO SAD BECAUSE WE NEVER GOT TO PREFORM IT AT MY HIGH SCHOOL😭 I PLAYED FREDERICK IN THAT SHORT TIME OF PLAYING HIM I LEARNED SO MUCH!
My senior year I saw this at my friend's school. I hope your school gets a second chance with it.
This is the best live action Disney remake and it isn’t even a movie.
As powerful as the actress who plays as esmerlda is, i feel like she was more angry than humbled and vulnerably emotional. During her "God Help the Outcasts" song
Couldn’t believe the ending. Thanks for sharing this. I saw a clip on TikTok & couldn’t find it anywhere else to watch.
My God; this perhaps 1/2 a peg down from Le Mis. It is hard to comprehend how this failed to make it to Broadway despite contractual issues. If it did, it likely would still be running...
Seeing this makes me wonder what would have happened if she waited for frollo to finish with mass she seemed to be getting through to him
2:00:24 The moment the gargoyles whisper "Yes you do..." as Quasimodo contemplates throwing Frollo off the tower made my blood run cold. This show is an absolute masterpiece of theatrical storytelling.
The stagecraft, the music, the references to the book as well as the Disney animated film. Masterfully done.
