Controversial take, but I think this film really could benefit from the live action treatment. Remove the gargoyles and take advantage of the PG-13 rating. Into the Woods showed Disney isn't afraid to do darker musicals
There was a great stage production in the 90's at Disney's MGM Studios (now hollywood studios) in Florida. It was epic. Theres an off broadway production lying around online somewhere too. The best stage production ive seen was in Seattle a few years ago with a deaf Quasimodo. It was excellent.

There is a line in the song that points this out. "Now here is a riddle to guess, if you can, sing the bells of Notre Dame. Who is the monster and who is the man??" It's the last part of the song.
In the novel as well. Victor Hugo played a lot with the person's outward appearance versus their character. Those who physically appeared to be the most pure of heart had rotten morals and vice versa.
The film has indisputable tone problems, it wants to be seriously epic and Disney at the same time (the gargoyles and physical gags) but my god, the soundtrack is masterful. I listen to it regularly. It gets me every time
@@brennaleigh3 i think it would've been too dark if they'd left out the gargoyles. Even as an adult I appreciate them because they not only add valuable emotional depth and character development in the scenes with Quasimodo, but they also provide some comic relief which you need in a story this intense.
Let us all pray for Notre Dame and her scars to heal. "From the big bells as loud as the thunder, to the little bells soft as a psalm", she shall sing again.

I thought, that in the context of the movie, this music was stirring and ethereal. But sitting here, listening to this incredible group of singers, I am still shivering with chills hearing this being sung here. You are all superb and well chosen for the parts you're playing. Kudos to each and every one of you, for your sterling and stellar performances.
Even as a kid, I knew note-for-note that The Hunchback of Notre Dame was and always would be the peak of Disney's musical magnificence. Don't get me wrong, they came out with some good ones afterwards, but the music in this film hits my choir spirit just right. You all did a great job of evoking that feeling, the spine-chilling awe and wonder I felt the first time I saw the film in theaters, and every single time after when I heard this song.
It's arguably the best soundtrack Disney's ever done. Sure, others were more fun, more catchy, more memorable, etc. But from a technical, instrumental, and lyrical standpoint, this soundtrack does things no other Disney soundtrack ever comes close to accomplishing. God Help the Outcasts alone is more poignant, powerful, and unapologetic than most musical songs in general. The only animated musical OST that could stand equal is Prince of Egypt (though Lion King gets pretty close, I suppose).
Yeah this and Prince of Egypt. Though I'd argue Prince of Egypt is a far stronger film that's stood the test of time (despite the cringeworthy super white cast) and Hunchback has the better soundtrack (tho Stephen Schwartz is utterly brilliant) The "God" theme, Deliver Us, and Plagues stand out for PoE; this song, Heaven's Light/Hellfire, God Help the Outcasts and the general score of Hunchback stand out. The film itself has more problems (oh the gargoyles 🤦🏼 and ugh "gypsies") but I still love it.
That last “bells bells bells of notes dame” - there are no words to describe the absolute chills it gives me (in a good way). If they do a live action, they can’t change the music

As a french woman and HoND fan, thank you very much ! I am glad that our literature inspires such genuine interest that it motivates talented artists to create and perform. I don’t know if you’re aware but foreigners are sometimes even more interested in French art than french people themselves 😂
That tends to be true in many countries, even here in the US, that people from outside the country are more interested in its history and culture than those who reside there. I think there's a fascination with the unknown and the way things are different in another part of the world, especially when there's a rich history and culture that thrives there.
I hear they're supposed to be making a live action movie... I'm not sure how I feel about that given their run of live action movies. If they go the direction they did for the stage show, get people who can actually sing, and don't act embarrassed about people singing, then it could be good. Of course, it's rather a shame that the real Notre Dame burned down...
I guess they didn't put it on Broadway because it doesn't have a happy ending. I have seen it in Germany in 2001 and I didn't know. Went out of the theatre feeling like shit, because the cliche of 'Disney always ends happily' didn't apply. It had a total run of three years, if I recall correctly and only had a revival in 2017.
Oh no, I wasn't crying by the end. I was outright sobbing. I miss singing in my choir so damn much, and this is one of my favourite soundtrack pieces of all times - and not just from Disney movies - and the impeccable performance along with everyone coming together to sing it so... Amazing. Thank you for making and sharing.
I read the novel. The best scenes made it to the movie. Read: the *only* good scenes (that didn't have Pierre Gringoire; he's the best character). Esmeralda is such a frustratingly *stupid* character in the book. I was cheering for her death by the end. Disney spoiled me with their version. Frollo's descent into madness was decently done, I'll admit, and I admired book!Quasimodo's entire lack of fucks to give. The rest? Eh. It's a wash for me.
@@VNightmoon I wouldn't say Gringoire is the best character in my opinion, instead of saving Esmeralda, he chose to save Djali, even though Esmeralda saved him first, but couldn't repay her back properly

Having been apart of a choir, i will always have an appreciation for choral music. I haven’t heard a choir sing in over a year and i have forgotten how beautiful the music is. This video was so well done and i tip my hat to all of the talented and committed singers that gave me chills for the entirety of this breathtaking piece. Amazing job. this made my day.
This needs more attention. When I was younger I really didn’t like this movie or it’s music. I never went to church and the music I heard in that age (around 6 I think) was Michael Jackson and other Disney music. This movie and it’s music were different, way darker and mature. My brother began to show me TheLegendOfZelda and it’s music and he is in a choir and plays the piano and most of all the organ. With that he introduced me to music like this, the theater and the opera. Now days I love music like this and would love to see this live on stage. I know why it’s not and why it probably never will be (looking at how sensitive everything has become), BUT this is art. It’s more than music or a movie, this all is a whole masterpiece and needs to be shown to more people !
Clopin, for this number alone, is such a vocally demanding part. Bravo to the performer.

he's god's gift to the role of the phantom tbh
Is there any chance you might do “Deliver Us” from The Prince of Egypt? I think your repertoire would sound so strong and rich with a song like that, or maybe “Plagues” from that musical... what a production! Also, a fantastic job with this, it’s become one of my favorite versions of this song, completely amazing!
We would love to do a number from the Prince of Egypt! However, we want to make sure we have a more diverse and representative cast who would want to be involved, to perform it before we do xxx

And have them pronounce the French names correctly! Quasimodo is ka-see-moh-doh. And Clopin is kloh-pahn.
I agree with you. The Hunchback of Notre Dame is one of my favorite Disney movies from my childhood.
Disney is doing a live action version of the film, Josh Gad is directing it I’m pretty sure! Hoping they take the dark turn that they did with the animated classic!
@@Princess-ie2cf RIP Hunchback, it’s going to be awful. Directed by Olaf, who’s only ever been comedic relief, and hasn’t directed anything in his life.

"It's a tale of a man... and a monster!"
I never picked up on it before but Clopin may be calling Frollo the monster and not the man.
Yes. That is the plot of the film as well, in case you also missed that.
@@Butterfly1025A It's been a long time since I've watched the film so I don't remember the specifics. It was one that I didn't like when it came out in theaters so I didn't watch it again until I was an adult. But I listen to Disney music all the time.
Tell you one thing.... Frollo was only in his mid-thirties during the movie..... I had always thought that he was in his sixties
The film has indisputable tone problems, it wants to be seriously epic and Disney at the same time (the gargoyles and physical gags) but my god, the soundtrack is masterful. I listen to it regularly. It gets me every time
I would love for someone to edit out the goat and gargoyles so we can have the tone problems straightened out haha.
@@brennaleigh3 i think it would've been too dark if they'd left out the gargoyles. Even as an adult I appreciate them because they not only add valuable emotional depth and character development in the scenes with Quasimodo, but they also provide some comic relief which you need in a story this intense.
@@dirtnbloodnotherkidsI do love the Symbolism of Notre Dame (An obvious stand in for God) rejecting Frolo and banishing him into the fires of Hell.
Let us all pray for Notre Dame and her scars to heal. "From the big bells as loud as the thunder, to the little bells soft as a psalm", she shall sing again.
Too bad the enemies of Christ will not be punished for it cause other religions are apparently more important.

The performer for Clopin did phenomenally. What a tenor! Congratulations to the entire ensemble - you did Hunchback (and Hugo) a great service!
He sounds kind of like Nathan Lane!
I thought, that in the context of the movie, this music was stirring and ethereal. But sitting
here, listening to this incredible group of singers, I am still shivering with chills hearing this
being sung here. You are all superb and well chosen for the parts you're playing. Kudos to
each and every one of you, for your sterling and stellar performances.
How many tenors hit Clopin's D6 at the end ??! have always long revered any men who sing Clopin. Bravo.
I'm pretty sure it's a D5 (D6 is difficult enough for sopranos to hit!), but still absolutely incredible. And he really nails it.
@@laurelrose7018Both are a pain in the ass for contraltos, and I think it's a D5.
The guy who plays Choplin... his voice is divine! Just Chef's kiss.
Same
it is probably one of their greatest works ever made just in terms of the story, scope, music and etc.
I still enjoy playing the sheet music on the piano and clarinet .
Always an oldie but goodie to me .

Omg this brought me to tears as a former choir singer turned now former singer this is the most beautiful rendition I'm not calling it a cover cuz there's never been a choir this amazing that brought me to tears
As a french woman and HoND fan, thank you very much !
I am glad that our literature inspires such genuine interest that it motivates talented artists to create and perform.
I don’t know if you’re aware but foreigners are sometimes even more interested in French art than french people themselves 😂
I noticed that
That tends to be true in many countries, even here in the US, that people from outside the country are more interested in its history and culture than those who reside there. I think there's a fascination with the unknown and the way things are different in another part of the world, especially when there's a rich history and culture that thrives there.
Victor Hugo made great books that translated into great musicals. Can't thank the man enough for his contribution to the arts
Oh yeah... I love French movies myself like Jean de Florette, Manon des Sources, and La Gloire de Mon Père.
Bravo! The singer for Frollo sounded PERFECT! And the singer for Clopin owned that finale!
Can they PLEASE put this on Broadway already? Can’t believe this lost its spot for the Frozen musical 🙄
Its not that unbeleiveable. Frozen was a better business decision. Hunchback of Notre dame would have attracted half of the business that frozen has.
You need to do the whole film, honestly.

As much as Disney's version is a total abomination of Hugo's original, the songs are among the best ever written for any of their animated features.
Check out the stage recording- much more true to the novel
Yeah, the Stage Version that Disney released is much more closer to the novel and even has the novel's ending
It’s an amazing movie though
@@VNightmoon I wouldn't say Gringoire is the best character in my opinion, instead of saving Esmeralda, he chose to save Djali, even though Esmeralda saved him first, but couldn't repay her back properly
“He saw corruption everywhere except within”
“Who is the monster and who is the man”
“You can’t hide what you’ve done from the eyes of Norte dame”

This video was so well done and i tip my hat to all of the talented and committed singers that gave me chills for the entirety of this breathtaking piece. Amazing job. this made my day.
