I'm so happy you showed her the M777 Howitzer. I personally worked with the M777 and the M119. Both are capable of launching out of an C-130 or C-17 for airborne operations, with paratroopers (certified artillerymen) following after it. If you look hard enough, there are videos of various style of airborne operations (Artillery, Infantry, etc). I'm currently working on my Bachelor's degree so I can come back in the Army as an commissioned officer. One of my goals is to be stationed in South Korea so I can personally meet Kim Jeong-ah.
Good luck on your degree, I’m envious of folks that can and will serve our country. If I hadn’t lost the genetic lottery and I was in better health I would have joined after HS.

If you don’t mind, what was the M1 like? I’m in my senior year of Highschool but I’m hoping to go into the army and hopefully get 19K, I’m already small so size won’t be an issue but what was mobility and duty like, were there specified mechanics or did the crew also need to know how to repair and maintain the system. Any special training or were you lumped in with the infantry guys?
@@yaboikungpowfuckfinger7697 The actual tank is freekin awesome, especially the version you'll crew. Of course their ups and downs, but overall I loved it. Maintence wise , you're pretty much involved on any they have to fix. When I was in we did "play " infantry once in a while. You'd most likely go through some sort of urban training. Best advice try to stay low profile in basic, dont take any of it personal. Once you're at your unit, pay attention to your senior NCOs. Those old timers been there ,got the t shirt. You can benefit greatly from their knowledge. Hope this helps a bit, good luck brother
I was at Camp Hovey and the DMZ as part of the 2/503rd Infantry Battalion in 1988. It was a interesting place and time. Myself personally I was always worried about the vast chemical arsenal the North Koreans possessed.
@@yaboikungpowfuckfinger7697 I was in Signal Corps doing Satcom, but I'd imagine our Armor guys are about the same. We all play infantry from time to time. You'll learn in Basic that you are a Rifleman no matter what job you have. Take that as a badge of pride. You're going to be a Soldier after all. As for maintenance, there are different levels. I had to do much of what was called operator and maintainer level maintenance on my Satcom stuff and the vehicles (the HMMVW and FMTV) they were attached/carried by. You'll likely have to do the same.
I know you'll have to learn to put treads back on if they break, cleaning stuff when you get back to the field, and probably basic stuff like checking the oil and stuff. As kilo 19 said already, pay attention to your NCOs. They're likely people that went in when I did. They know a lot of information.
Following up on what KungPow said, how much of that promotional video they showed of the Abrams is accurate?
Her story about the women killed in her unit during the artillery training accident is incredibly sad. That must have been very difficult to deal with emotionally and mentally, even if it happened before she joined the unit. They were probably brave, kind women just like her.
Unfortunately, things like that happen in any Army units world wide. Just before I got to Korea, there was an incident in which a Sergeant got pinned between two vehicles because of a faulty brake line. That faulty brake line had been reported by the driver (which should have deadlined it), and the CO ordered the driver to take the vehicle out anyways. So it was a combination of one part technical issue with the vehicle and two parts human error (the CO ordering the vehicle to be used, and the Sergeant going in between the vehicle).
I was thinking the same thing. 12!?!? We’re killed. I wonder how many were injured. I was 13B and I feel for anyone in an arty unit in a certain way. I’m a big guy and the rounds were heavy for me. Accidents still happened but we trained and trained to try and mitigate to get our missions accomplished
12 dead is probably the entire gun crew, plus observers.
I just wonder at the failure that allowed the weapon to fire out of battery. Design, procedure, or material failure, it should never have been possible.
@@lairdcummings9092 The Norks use equipment that is dated by DECADES. I wouldn't be surprised if they're using 50 year old artillery pieces. So it doesn't surprise me.

That said, "old" doesn't *have* to mean damaged or in ill-repair; the USAF has B-52s in service - still highly-effective bomb trucks - that are being flown by the *grandsons* of their original pilots.

@@insanebe1 They are easy to attack.... if the Tank worked alone. However, tanks are never without Infantry, as is their role. They are usually paired with line or mechanized infantry, and cannot really be singled out.
As well, active protection systems are being developed and tested, combined with already existing ERA. Tanks are still quite a survivable asset. The problem is that the conflicts we've had use for them were laughably easy. At least for in regards to the U.S. So it seems a bit of a waste in comparison to their maintenance and operational cost which is the actual driving motivator to get rid of them.
However in a legitimate pitched land combat scenario, a Tank's only real counters are Infantry with dedicated support weapons and other Tanks.
If aircraft can get close enough to your units to start doing damage, you may be having more troubles than losing a few Tanks.

She is a professional through and through. My admiration and respect for her is great. I am a veteran of the US Air Force. She would make an excellent professor at any one of our military academies in training our young officers. Her amazing graps of logistics and attention to detail is impressive.
Sir, respectfully, look up how many main battle tanks they have on command. We don’t even have the full number, but they have North Korea well defended with their number alone. This doesn’t include apc’s or their mrap/Bradley equivalents. They have ballistic missiles that reach most countries around them, not to mention that Kim spent most of their wealth on military prowess over feeding their people. This channel is propaganda
@@drivethroughthearttracksla6736 NK has numbers and that is it. Their troops have minimum to no training, including their heavy equipment operators due to a lack of resources as Kim spends the money on the equipment without concern for the realities of actually fighting a war. The best plane or tank doesn't do anything if you can't keep it fueled and in spare parts. So the core strength of NK will just be throwing bodies at the problem hoping it dies before they run out of men. A tactic that is significantly less effective in a modern environment, which is why the enemies that are the smartest don't try it anymore instead relying on guerilla tactics.
@Mir Baloch They are obviously well-trained in certain aspects, but when they can't afford to train with live-fire rounds or maintain equipment that doesn't mean much, they would struggle greatly against a well equipped army like the US. Still wouldn't wanna try though.

I would like to meet Kim Jeong-ah someday. In her pervious videos she has seen some of what the US has or does. This included weapons but also food and culture. I think it is hard for her and other North Koreans to grasp the size of the US in several ways. The US is the third largest country in population. It is also the third largest based on land mass too. Then add in the largest GDP and largest exporter of agricultural products, makes the US hard to compare to North-Korea. It saddens me that things are so bad for the average person in North-Korea. I would be honored for her and her family to visit my home for a visit/meal.
Can I ask you sir, have you actually looked across the water at especially the U.K. and just to it’s right Europe? There is many fighting nations there that easily surpass the US , the U.K., France and Germany have real history and not made up history. We don’t stand there and tell our country men lies, we don’t claim to be the greatest on the planet by lying and filling in voids, England,France and Germany are real countries with real military history the greatest military history , but we don’t lie and stand there telling everyone that we are the greatest on the planet, we don’t have to, we are! The sad thing about the NK and SK and why they still haven't reunite is because China is holding NK's hand, they rather have this bumper state that can withstand the first impact than have nothing at all.

I saw a Chinese official or someone like that talk about how they wanted a peaceful reunification between the two Koreas as well. I dont know how trustful his words are, but from the look of things even chinese people are wanting the reunification of Korea. If Korea can walk a fine line between America and China, then China would see benefits in Korean reunification as well. Trying to be indifferent between America and China is the hard part.

@@711jastin Sadly, you're probably right. The North Korean military is so weak nowadays that South Korea could likely crush them on their own without any US intervention. So most likely they'd have their soldiers blend in with the civilian population and try to take out US/South Korean soldiers in guerilla warfare.
@@Geckogold Yep, Guerrilla warfare is pretty much the only viable tactic against a far superior force, which inevitably makes any war against guerrillas drag on and on, with much higher instances of civilian killings as it's hard to distinguish one from the other. It does afford the guerrilla army a much higher chance of actually repelling an enemy force though, which is why it's so commonly used.

@Alexi Malenkov Those were different battles. No military is good against insurgencies unless you have blanket authority to bag everyone. Russia ain't no good, France ain't no good, surprise, the US ain't no good. Eastings though was a display of raw power. A 1 on 1 slug fest between two nations that had standing militaries built for war. The US though, ever since world war 2, built our entire army to fight a conventional war. That way, if another World War was to happen again we'd come out on top.
During Eastings the US fought tanks specifically built for that climate and at the time, were the best in the world. The US Abrams tank was untested and this was it's first combat. It dominated. There isn't a nation on earth that can touch us and all your nay saying and emojis aren't going to change that. Stay in your lane.
The Abrams tanks that have been captured and used by ISIS were, surprise surprise, tanks we gave to Iraq. Which was fucking stupid as they don't know how to use them properly. Even then, those are export versions with all of the top notch gun systems, computers, armors and rounds taken out. They're Abrams tanks in Chassis only. Everything else is boot leg.
@Alexi Malenkov I think the point he was trying to make is that event might be representative of a engagement between NK armor and US/South Korean armor should it happen in the near future. NK's equipment is mostly ancient by any standards with very few modern copies and as she mentioned "for decoration" The crews are poorly trained and untested. Regardless of where NK's equipment might come from unless someone gives NK a bunch of modern stuff and the resources to train to use and support it, if a conventional war breaks out, armor battles will be one sided. NK does have a lot of artillary .. or so they want everyone to believe which some consider a deterrent. If NK was to invade 100km into South Korea, the soldiers would be rather confused to find everyone they conquered is better fed and housed and has things they can't even dream of.

In your mind set you guys seems to believe that it's going to be 5 M1 tank vs 20 T72 or something in the battle field when in reality it's not. When that "overrun your enemy in large numbers tactic" don't work you guys always reverse to saying,"Dat becuZ it's CheAP EXpoRt versions!" or you blame the middle east people for using "poor tactic" when they are using SOVIET tactic aka your tactic. Also the M1 tank's main idea was created to combat the Soviet T62 tank but it was cancel due to cost and refunded again. So speaking M1 tank and T72 are not that old from each other. Maybe 9 years at the most. But to say that M1 is "decades" ahead of the T72 is 100% false.
The M1 Abrams doesn't use a standard engine. It uses a Honeywell AGT1500 gas turbine engine, much like those used for helicopters.
Runs on JP8, jet fuel.
Leopard 2 (all models): 1500 hp uni-fuel engine, runs on anything from lighter Benzine, Petrol, Jet fuel, Diesel, Vegetable oil, Alcohol, (from Methanol, Ethanol, to iso-Propanol), paint diluent, brake cleaner, liquid butter ...
It has to be liquid and inflammable.

In case she happens to see this, here's some more info on the M1 Abrams (this is all from memory, so apologies if I get anything wrong):
Firstly, not one Abrams has ever in it's entire service history been lost to enemy fire. Loses have only occurred due to a few friendly fire incidents and mechanical failures. It is also a 40 year old tank that has undergone numerous upgrades, making it's service record even more impressive.
The Abrams is armed with a 120mm cannon that is gyroscopically stabilized and is controlled by a targeting computer that allows the Abrams to hit a target at 2 miles away while the Abrams is moving at full speed, which it did in Iraq during Desert Storm. It is also equipped with numerous sensors that make finding enemy targets much easier, such as built in night vision and thermal imaging. It can fire numerous types of ammo from High explosives to depleted uranium armor penetrators.
The Abrams is also very fast, as stated in the video, and is powered by a jet turbine engine. Fun fact since she seems to have a mind for logistics: the engine for the Abrams and all of its drive train can be pulled out as one power pack and quickly replaced in just a few hours, making fixing one relatively easy.
A notable safety feature it has for the turret crew is its blowout ammo rack, which is designed to blow out panels on the top of the turret in case the ammo rack is ever hit and direct the fire and explosion out and away from the crew. It is also extremely well armored and it's exact armor composition is actually classified information.
It is a _very_ powerful tank. It may not be the most powerful in the world (debatably), but if I had to pick a tank to serve in, I'd pick an Abrams in a heart beat.
Pretty certain the part about loss to enemy fire is no longer true, unless you're picking nits about the deliberate design of the Abrams (hose the remains of the crew off the inside & send it to the repair depot to be reissued).
None operated *by Americans* have been lost to enemy fire aside from Iranian IED's in Iraq, but several have been lost by the Saudis.
I would prefer the Leopard 2A6 or A7.
Multi-fuel engine, better gun stabilization, faster (80 km/h), 120 mm smooth bore Rheinmetall cannon (o.k. the latest Abrams finally got it, too) with combustible casings, quick change engine (15 Minutes)...
In shooting contests, the Leo 2 outgunned the Abrams by 1:4 in precision, especially when shooting while moving on rough ground.

@@lordcommissar7813 That's what the USSR did; they literally call them "Monkey Models" (which gives you an idea what they think of Middle Eastern Muslims). If I recall correctly, for example, they never made the T-64 available for export.
The M-1 was the first to have Chobham armor (developed in the 1960's) and the British Challengers have it as well. It doesn't need to be secret if there's no way in Hell that the Chinese can replicate the process (Russia has the GDP of New York State so it's not like they'll manage to mass produce it). Many of these 2nd World nations can't even produce commercial goods, so they're far better off producing (or buying) composite add-on bits, which Israel & others manufacture for sale.
I'd bet these M-1's are hand-me-downs from units I worked with back at the end of the Cold War. We had a LOT of leftover tanks... so perhaps your impression is because these were originally M-1's retrofitted to supposedly M-1A1 standards? That would account for the armor not being as good as the contemporary version, and I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't get the most current version of other packages either (sensors, active armor, &c)
@@fyrchmyrddin1937Saudis get what they pay for. The M1A2 SEP Abrams which the US uses is highly expensive. Kinda like car shopping if you want a certain car but can't afford the luxury package version then you go with the base package and thats what the Saudis did.

And just what it would be like the be on the receiving end of the Abrams' 120mm gun, plus just what exactly an Soviet tank can do to the Abrams (i.e., nothing).

@@kentuckyace1068 Look up the vid called 73 eastings.. It is about the armored push that stopped at the 73rd latitude line on the map for the Iraq war... The M1 ran over a mine field and the tank crew was like " is someone throwing rocks at us?" the driver pipes up with something along the lines of "nope they are mines" as he keeps driving over them. Think they where anti-personal mines ment to take out troops and jeeps/trucks, and not the heavy anti tank mines to stop a tank.

If you read this at this time. The M1 is not considered the king of the hill by its specifications, it is arguably the bast tank because of the crews training.
M1s are very well rounded tanks, with an increased dedication on crew survivability, to the point that the M1s engine can work with almost any type of fuel available worldwide, and while that does have its disadvantages, it comes at the ability to let the crew operate for a prolonged time away from supply lines, which comes in handy if you are cut off.
Apocryphally, General Creighton Abrams met with the designers of what would become the M1 Abrams. They were balancing all the priorities of a tank, and had crew survival near the bottom of the list. General Abrams walked to their design board, erased all the numbers, put crew survival at the top of the list, telling the designers to work from there.
I don't know if that actually happened, but the resulting design doesn't undermine the story.

I think her experience is in armored personnel carriers since she made comments about the North Korean tanks carrying a squad and commented on how small it is inside the M1. Main battle tanks usually don't have a lot of space inside.
I'd put money on you being correct. Go to The Chieftain channel and look at old soviet tanks. You'll get a feel for the space.

I slept overnight in the crew compartment of an M60 once. Hellish experience. I was twisted in a C shape and had protruding chunks of metal pushing into me the entire time. Sleeping in an M113 was heaven in comparison.
The inside of the crew compartment where the gunner, loader, and tank commander sit is only big enough to take a round out of the ammo compartment, turn it around 180 degrees, and load it into the breach of the main gun.
They should show her a documentary of the battle of 73 easting, to show how training and tech really decide the outcomes of battle.
73 easting was with just the A1 variants of the Abrams as well. Now and days we have the V2s transitioning to V3s with CITVs, Trophy systems and etc.

I've watched quite a few DIMPLE episodes with this wonderful lady. I am always impressed with how kind and gentle and naive through no fault of their own N.K people they are. I cannot imagine the hardships they've endured and to see their wide eyed joy at simple things like a birthday card or food package is bittersweet i'm crying both happy and sad tears for these lovely people.

The inside of the K9 is bigger than the M1's because they are two different vehicles-the K9 is self-propelled artillery, which requires a larger crew compartment so the operators can load shells quickly at a stationary point. The M1 is a combat tank and is designed to shoot while moving.

@Chris Seals I don't agree with the Corps' Force Design 2030 concept. Having Marine heavy armor units has always been a big part of the air-ground combat team. Marines certainly can't depend on the US Army when they are called in to perform amphibious assaults and hold objectives. I think the SecNav, SecDef and Commandant need to get their collective heads out of the arses before their incompetence cost more Marine lives. Bring back the tanks and artillery! Semper Fi!

As a retired tanker of 22 years I am both happy and sad to see this. Folks in the North deserve much better. I have spent 30 months total in S. Korea and can honestly say I would love to hear of the day 'Cooperation" is finally achieved.

I think the K9 is an Self Propelled Gun (SPG), a mobile vehicle with an artillery gun. They don’t have much armour and stay away from direct combat while providing mobile artillery support.

Actually, I feel that the NK and the US militaries does looks eyes to eyes when it comes to military tactics. Both appreciates the need to put artillery pieces onto mountains. It’s just that the NK does it more primitively and more costly than the US does.

One of my cousins repairs tanks while deployed and while back home. He saw one where a projectile was put in the barrel in an attempt to take out it occupants. It blew the end off they survived and continued to fire it then brought it back home to have it fixed instead of abandoning it behind enemy lines. He said that when the guys got home and had leave they would come by see if it had been fixed yet. One guy was able to use it again next time he was deployed over seas.

She keeps comparing it to the K9, the K9 is not a tank, it is a self-propelled gun in the same category at the M109 Paladin. It is a much bigger vehicle with an artillery gun, not a tank. The K1 is the South Korean equivalent. Though the M1 outclasses everything North Korea has. Though keep having her, she is amazing to listen to.
Another interesting video, though I suspect that, when she said the North Korean vehicles ran out of "oil," it was probably a mistranslation, and that they actually ran out of FUEL.
Other languages use words that don't directly translate to English. I had a Filipino co-worker and he called fuel "croodoo", it's a spin on the word crude as in crude oil. It still meant the same thing.

At 60-70 tons, the M1 Abrams is too heavy to maneuver on North Korean roads & bridges as well as the steep mountain terrain of Korea. This is why South Korea designed the K1 tank, which is a lighter copy that has improved suspension & engine for Korean terrain. Now South Korea has introduced K2 tank which can fire KSTAM smart top-attack munitions, which is a fire & forget round that can choose its own target.

Infrastructure and resources... that's why the state of the North Korean army is what it is.
You can't properly train soldiers on vehicles that you don't have the oil to operate, you can't drive vehicles on off road conditions unless they have been specifically designed to withstand that type of punishment. No helicopters to move gear and artillery.
Having the soldiers hand move artillery placements through mountainous terrain seems like complete hell....
I wonder if they have anything like mountain artillery. From the way she described it, it seemed like they have just normal artillery. Carrying that into mountains would be hell even with horses. But mountain artillery, if well designed, can be carried even by a small group of people (even though it would be less powerful than normal artillery, but it's usually enough).
She did mention that their artillery wasn't as big, so I'd expect that it is designed somewhat with the terrain and movement capabilities in mind.

If you're referring to North Korea, their tanks would likely be taken out by airstrikes from either the US or South Korea. With how badly maintained their vehicles are, and how little fuel they have for them, I think they'd probably have to use their tanks as static defense in the form of a bunker/turret, similar to what the Germans ended up doing with their tanks late in WW2. And which would also likely be taken out by an airstrike or artillery barrage once its location was known.
@@Geckogold yes the north Koreans, I honestly don't even think the airforce would waste its time bombing obsolete tanks, as seen in the Iraq invasion. tanks were left to fight the american tanks which were crushed. so its likely it would be left to tank units, light anti armor units or just infantry squads coming across one, and each squad is guaranteed to have some form of anti armor with them.

No offense to Kim Jeong-ah or the other former NK military people who do reaction videos here, but the NK army is a joke. They have outdated equipment that is poorly maintained and has very limited spare parts and fuel, but most importantly, they have no experience at all. It's a paper tiger. In a conflict between the US and NK, the US would roll over NK in a matter of days, just like it did with Iraq (remember, at the time, Iraq had the 4th largest army in the world). The US Navy alone could destroy most of their military infrastructure as well as their entire air force without a US soldier ever setting foot on NK soil. The only reason NK still exists as a state is because China wills it so, and we don't wish to go to war with China. Yet.
Probably thought the same back in 1950, lol. US came with dozens of countries and still couldn't beat the KPA and Chinese.

When the KPA invaded, there were about 300 US troops in SK, so the KPA rolled over the South Korean army, which had no artillery or tanks. American troops had to brought over from Japan and arrived piecemeal, always vastly outnumbered. Once MacArthur landed at Inchon on Sept. 15, it took about six weeks to push the KPA into China. And BTW, though it was a UN effort and there were a dozen other countries involved, 90% of the non-Korean troops were American. The other countries sent token forces for political purposes. Then the Chinese crossed the Yalu with a first wave of 200,000 soldiers. Very soon there were more Chinese soldiers in Korea than all of the Allied soldiers combined (~ 3 to 1), and we fought them to a standstill.
If we could build strong enough ties with China and promise to care of refugees (which is what I think China's primary concern is as China is sick of Kim's shit too), then we might be able to ask China to look the other way while we get that monster out of NK and reunite the country. It's a humanitarian nightmare. It will take generations to deprogram the citizenry though just like it took generations to make it that way. Our only concern in a land war in NK is him nuking his own populace along with SK IMHO.
The thing that isn't pointed out in the video is that the M1A2 Abrams tank does not rely on roads....they can go cross-country. And also, even at top speed, (41.5 MPH) they can target and fire at full speed, and fire their 120MM cannon at distances of 4km. Their target acquisition system is capable of firing day or night, at full speed over rough terrain, from behind any sort if visual hindrance. They also have multiple 7.62 machine guns. They also have new age (depleted Uranium) armor, capable of deterring any known anti tank ordinance. Some M1A2 tanks are equipped with missile countermeasure devices, intended to detect and jam guidance of the laser-guided missiles. These tanks are completely bad ass!

I happen to know that in Gulf War I, the Russian tanks used by the Iraqi Republican Guard units -- even the T-80 and T-90s -- could not hit an M1 at range. But the M1 not only out-ranged Russian armor, they were getting hits on turrets from 1.5 miles out or farther.
The only downfall is fuel. The M1 is one of the thirstiest tanks in the world, consuming its entire fuel load at top speed, in only roughly 120 minutes.
