    The only thing to add to this is to ensure you spot the exit to the water crossing before you enter the water. Not all exits are visible from the entry point.

    IMO you can't get enough of these videos if you're interested in safe 4x4 off road driver. Just when you think you know it all, that's when you're likely to come a cropper.
    But for some of us that aren't out there every week learning and practicing, nothing quite beats a video like this for those 'light globe' moments.

    Great point about the bow wave lowering the water level behind it! I hadn't thought about that before

    Mad Matt, I love your videos. Been 4x4ing now for a few years. Mainly on the sand. I live in California and we have an awesome beach and dunes to drive and play on. Even across continents, your tips are great reminders and very helpful. Keep up the good work.

    Most don't wait. I have diff breathers fitted but still stop for 15 or so to cool like the first river crossing at Bendethera.
    Look fwd see the new rig. I'll do a vid with u when it's ready....wife's building up a JKU for these type of tracks.

    love this easy peasy instructions. my plan was to cross a river, but i did not do it. first it was a step down slope, to about up to the hood and air intake. i did then walk in to about 1 meter of depth. i realize then it was a to large angle, going up on the other side. that my trailer hook would get caught due to overhang of the rear. so i backed up, abandoned the idea of i could cross the stream safely.

    In Cost Rica, I learned that some people drive their cars through deep water crossings backwards in reverse! It apparently creates enough of a bow-wave at the rear of the car to keep all the electrics and air intakes "safe"...

    • @MadMatt4WD
      @MadMatt4WD  7 років тому +3

      Yeah ok, I'm not sure I'd do that but I can see the thinking behind it.

    When we go through deep rivers over here in Colorado we often will hook a kenetic rope from one Jeep to the one that’s making the crossing, more than one time that has allowed us to stop a Jeep from being taken away by fast moving water.

    • @MadMatt4WD
      @MadMatt4WD  4 роки тому +1

      And I've seen some of the rivers you guys drive. I would think that technique would be essential.

    • @franksmith8210
      @franksmith8210 4 роки тому +1

      Yeah but more often than not people don’t do it. The biggest mistake we see is people just don’t do enough checking the depth before they attempt to cross. They just go for it.

    Cool vid. Can you please explain what you mean by using the starter motor to drive the vehicle when the engine dies? Thanks in advance

    • @MadMatt4WD
      @MadMatt4WD  10 років тому +7

      Hi R6IXY, basically you can use the starter motor as a small engine to drive a manual 4wd. What you do is engage 1st gear low range, clutch out and then turn the key to start and the 4wd will move forward provided it's not bogged. Very effective if you drive a petrol vehicle and the ignition system gets wet and the motor won't start.

    • @R6IXY
      @R6IXY 10 років тому +2

      MadMatt4WD Oh righto. I think I've accidentally done this when I forget to put the clutch in and I try to start the car, and the car lurches forward. Very handy tip indeed!

    Hey matt, you forgot one thing.....let the diffs and brakes cool off a bit before hittin the water.
    When are you gunna do a video punchin the old girl up Dustys, Mt Walker, or Jackass Hill???

    • @MadMatt4WD
      @MadMatt4WD  10 років тому

      69rollarok your dead right about the diffs etc but in reality it's better to fit diff breathers in my opinion because I doubt any of us are going to sit for an hour while they cool down unless it's Nolans Brook :) I'm going easy on the hard trails while I set up the new truck with barwork. But yes they are amongst the tracks we would like to show. Cheers for your comments.

    40 PSI??? good lord man, that is nuts. on the street i run 25 to 30. too high and my rubbers wear out in the middle. the tread wont even make full road contact. what do you guys normally do?

    • @MadMatt4WD
      @MadMatt4WD  4 роки тому +1

      I’ve since dropped to 36psi. It’s a heavy 4wd though.

      @MadMatt4WD  4 роки тому +1

      Correct it's not a video about how to best prep a vehicle for a water crossing but rathe how to do a water crossing. You can do a crossing without diff breathers. Many vehicles have a basic system in place that works well enough unless you stop in the water.
