I just received mine and i love it There was no mess and my coffee mug works perfectly with it. It small and compact as well as quick. Good Buy for me.
*This replaced a smaller Keurig that I owned for 6 years **MyBest.Kitchen** I wanted the convenience of the water receptacle and while this unit is much larger than the previous one, I'm very happy with my purchase. The only downside to this larger model is having to move it from under the cabinets to place the pod and refill it. I was able to rectify this by purchasing glide mats for small appliances. Now, it's perfect!*
I currently have this flex brewer by Hamilton Beach. Even as a refurbished purchase from "Ollies" ($29.99), it has travelled with us well and served us very well. I had numerous requests at Thanksgiving to make a "good" cup of coffee for an Aunt!
I notice though that Brian doesn't mention that pushing the handle down that locks the brew top in place also ensures that you puncture the top of that kcup for the water to flow into it and into the grounds so that you get coffee. If you don't you just brewed a nice cup of hot water!(185 degrees to be exact).
It is noisy, it does spit water on your countertop, and three minutes to brew is precise! I am looking ahead for a replacement though for when this one sputters, fumes and refuses to brew another cup of coffee.
I'm considering the 49996. It caught my eye and I like the features....and the reviews rave!
My flex brew came with a steeping basket for the loose ground coffee. I bought it in 2014 and it still works today.

Mine works great. far as I'm concerned you can use any Kcup as long as it's round. he forgot to mention that when you pull the handle down you are also puncturing a hole on the bottom of the cup as well so not only are you puncturing a hole on the side while putting it into the unit you're also puncturing a hole on the bottom when pulling down the handle. Yes I did have a mess with the first one I purchased so I returned it got a second one and it works like a charm with no splattering mess to clean up. It also comes with a basket to put the grounds in or you can just dump it straight in like he demonstrated
I meant when pulling the handle it punctures the top not the bottom.😀
I don't recall exactly when I purchased this model but I think it was purchased in 2015/16. It still works for me, although I have to be careful of the K-pod style in 2020. It helps to alternate from K-pods to old favorite grounds in the brew basket. Dunn Bros. Pod style works great in this macine.
mine makes no mess at all. I love it. The only time I have made a mess was when I was an idiot and forgot to press down the part where you have said it just locks it in. No it punches in the top for the water to go in and then exits where the tooth punctured in the bottom. It doesnt just lock it in place.

I have the older style flex brew that uses a funnel type housing for the brew baskets no mess at all !

good review, i actually bought one of these as my first k cup machine, and to let you know, mine came with a separate basket for putting in loose ground coffee, that was removable from the main tray. I have used it that way, due to I bought the wrong cups for the k cup adapter. and it brewed up a very nice cup of coffee.
Well the HB flex brew I bought is undergoing destructive testing..... it's believed to be what caused a fire..... it has already been x-rayed now the destructive testing.....
we did have problems with mess as well... so if you have one do not leave it plugged up!

Yea I wish I had watched a review first, I had the one that could do the hot water on demand and the flexbrew. It only held like 2 -3 cups of water and on our first few runs it started reporting a warning saying " Purge " but the directions said nothing about this, considering this was all before the first cup was produced we are returning it.

It's being sold for $29.99 at Ollie's Warehouse in Anderson, SC Jan. 14th, 2016. At that price, I might give it a try.
We have this machine and it makes the first cup of coffee just fine. Manual says to give it a two minute cool down, which we have tried but it never brews a second cup. We have to shut it down and wait 30-60 minutes before trying to use it again.
i have a flexbrew and it's great. no mess at all. i use all the k cups and mine has an extra filter for fine grounds. i was thinking about buying a reusable, refillable filter cup but realized i don't need one since i can put grounds in it without the k cups. doesn't take long at all to get a hot cup of coffee. like that i can use the filter for ground coffee i already have and can add extra to make an extra large cup of coffee. also like being able to put a insulated travel container in it and brew straight to it. plus it was half the price of a keurig.

Think I will try this machine as Hamilton Beach makes good products at a reasonable price. Kurig single serve coffeemakers work well for some people, but in my experience two machines clogged up easily and subsequently stopped working completely, even with the vinegar clean-outs. Time to try something different.
Still kicking it around to buy , but the reviews have pretty much makes me think I'll just keep using my four cup maker .my little cheap four cup maker was real cheap and doesn't make a mess. Do like the way it looks but that's all . No sale for me , and thanks to the people that gave there reviews on Amazon - 60% were good and some bad -and I have relied on reviews when buying something.

my problem was using refillable kcups. i can take the filter baskit out but what i encountered was i had to pull the needle back on the bottom and the lid doesnt go down easy.

I bought this for my wife for Christmas because she was always talking about a Keurig but I wanted to be able to use any k style cup. Unfortunately, this "Flexbrew is a disaster ! I would push the start button and it would just blink, indicating it had no water, which I just put in. I would have to unplug it then plug it in again. Sometimes it wouldn't give us a complete cup when we put a complete cup in. You could turn it upside down and no water would drain out; but surprise, the next cup would overflow ! I've since returned it and am searching for ANY reliable machine.
I was looking for more detailed explanation of how the k-cup insert works. Mine doesn’t seem to fit into the base well & then I can’t get both pieces to lock into the machine. Oh well. Just for future reference, don’t skip over obvious steps. Just because you know how it works, doesn’t mean we all do! And your hand was in the way to see how the 2 pieces fit together when you were displaying that step. 🤷♀️
I'm surprised you called it a safety it pushes the k cup up to puncture it.

Got this for free awhile back, finally hooked it up and started using it. My dumbass didnt understand the water situation bc im used to keurigs but oh well. It works great for k cups and my roommate who is not a coffee drinker uses it with the ground basket to make hot water for tea and the basket helps control the water flow

I like to have a cup of coffee about 10pm, I have a Bunn coffee maker I use in the mornings so I find one today at a garage in and for $5.00 I couldn’t pass it up, throughly cleaned it and did the vinegar cleaning. Used my own hazelnut coffee in the little basket & used 12oz of filtered cold water and wow was it delicious! I have reverse osmosis I use for coffee, the taste was great. I used one and a half scoops of coffee,
we have it and it just refuses to work correctly like it doesnt fill the cup even half way and grounds get everywhere so we plan on buying just a normal keurig this week

My NEW machine ALWAYS makes a mess every single time!!! Pressure buildup at end of brewing forces pressure/vapor out the top of the k cup holder and all over!!! extremely upset i threw the box away and wanted to know my options to return... i do not recommend this machine as during brewing, I'm using DD bag coffee and seems like mesh filter holes might be too course as every single cup of coffee ends up also with grains all over the inside of my cup, again EVERY SINGLE TIME!!
+Jorge Torres mine came with a second filter for fine ground coffee. just bought it so maybe that was added after you bought yours.
I have had my HB Flexbrew for two years now and really dislike it!! It has always been more noisy than a Keurig and more messy. Now it has begun exploding the K-cups, which means I end up with grounds in my coffee every single time. The machine has been cleaned and cleaned and it still explodes the K-cups! I have to do extensive cleaning every time I use it. Will NEVER buy another one!!
Exactly how many ounces or cups of water are needed to completely fill up the water tank?

Yes i'm still upset set so i decided to get to the bottom of two issues with this machine, the mess and the coffee grinds ending up in my coffee (i had a third doubt about the locking mechanism), yes I'm a thinker hence my name curious george.. The locking mechanism where you push down every time, i looked at the configuration/design for several days and even the pressure of pulling out the k cup holder to see if the push down actually did anything.... It does nothing, no latch that actually locks/latches or rings that push up against anything to lock anything... I will call HB to speak to an engineer (seriously, i'm not doing anything today but get my wife another coffee maker but i always like to know why things work or don't work), The issue with the spills and coffee grinds in my coffee i had to figured it out, the pressure at the end causes vapor and i took pics after the mess with the cup removed and the BACK of the holder has a little hole on top, i can actually see grinds coming up to that hole (yes i used no more than 10oz) and a line actually coming down so that shows my back mess, as for the front seems the pressure sometimes shoots out the front, but at least i figured out the grinds in my coffee and mess in the back of the k cup holder. How many thousands of people are pushing down on the mechanism they say you MUST do , waste of energy and time.. If anyone says I'm wasting energy and time calling HB, well not really, I'm making things better for HB and I so they can design a better one!

I have a question. Is this machine supposed to pop a hole in the back of the k-cup? I know it's supposed to puncture a hole at the top of the k-cup but I also see a hole at the back of it too.
From other reviews I have seen this is normal. Instead of a hole in top and bottom it does a hole in top and to the rear. It doesn't seem to affect performance at all. I'm looking to buy one soon myself and that came up in my "research". lol
I have had my HBflexBrew, single cup for several months. No matter what pod I use, there is a metallic odor and taste to the coffee. I have cleaned the machine with white vinegar followed by multiple rinses; but, nothing seems to help. Did I buy a lemon? No one else has posed this concern. Thanks.
+Joan Kisska The metallic taste is a common issue for me with any Keurig or pod coffee makers. The solution for me is to use filtered water, not tap water. I think it is the chorine in the tap water causing the bad flavor.
Can you make the apple cedar kcups?
Hm...I want a single serve machine that can use both k-cups OR my own ground coffee - and can brew straight into a travel mug. I also want it to be under $50. Is this my only option or is there a better one out there...?
+Silfverr this one does all that. i love mine. mine also has a second filter that you can put in it if you want to use fine grounds.
I like my machine. The problem I have with it is that mine makes a lot of steam and I usually get less coffee than the water I put in. Anybody know why?

+Kirstyn Frady I do not think that would work but you can add half the water to brew and use ice in the mug you are using.
+Kirstyn Frady you would need to use hot to make the grounds work. i put ice in the mug and brew straight to the mug or just add ice after. with this one you can just add any kind of grounds and make it as strong as you want. i don't think ground coffee will do good without hot water. the good thing about this is you can get any kind of ground coffee you want and make it as strong or weak as you want. plus if you have a bean grinder you can grind and then add it fresh.

I just got this machine because I thought it can use soft pods which I thought meant San Francisco Bay OneCups. I tried one and it didn't work. It didn't puncture anything. Am I doing something wrong? I am so mad I got this machine. $39 down the drain!
+TraumaER Oops! When they say coffee pods, they mean totally soft coffee pods that resemble tea bags (google Melitta coffee pods) not the pods that have the foil tops on them that are meant to be brewed in a Keurig. What you are going to have to do to make your OneCups work is to empty the coffee out of your OneCup into the basket meant for brewing loose coffee and then brew it that way. Hope this helps.

i use all the k cups in mine
Instead of just talking about the mess it can make and wiping it away, do a close up and let us see it happening! If it's just from splash over the cup, get a taller cup.
it's just a couple of drops on the counter there's not a flood. i'v had my mine for around 4 years.
Warning, you can not use all "K"cups including Keurig, type.
I've kept a small list of what I can get k-cup wise that works. As far as the regular real k-cups, the one I'd noticed does not play nice with it is the ones for Eight o'clock. For pods, I've ordered off www.coffee.org - the pods all brew good with the machine - fool proof.
+Clifford Krimmel i used all the decaf ones that are made by keurig and any one else and have had no problem. i don't use the ones with caffeine so don't know if those pose a problem.

Why in God's name is nobody discussing the leak???
Yes, there's some splashing that goes on, but seriously, what is it with the leak at the top of the machine near the end of the brewing cycle????? If you watch the right side (same happens with mine) of the top of the machine, it just pours out.
Are you considering this part of the mess, because it looks to me like a major design flaw that should've been corrected before it hit the store shelves.

So glad I didn't purchase this machine. Kmart had it on sale for $39.99. Something just didn't feel right about it.
Should've got it, it works well with no issue for me and worked with all K-cup and I don't get any mess from it. I got a second one for the house...
How many times is he going to say the word "mess"... Too funny. I have the same coffee maker and haven't noticed a mess. What's up with the use of a Starbucks cup as demo for tall cup brew. I feel that was a subliminal message... Why couldn't he just use a generic travel mug instead. Hidden motive?

This machine is crap. Clogs in less than a year and cannot fix because they use screws that cannot be unscrewed. Don't waste your money. I can't wait for the guy that did this review try to unclog it when it clogs....and they all eventually clog. Thanks HB for putting in screws that prevent owner from fixing it.
i'v had ni for 4 years and it runs fine. and you need to run vinegar through it to keep it work the way it should.
