Making A Handmade Book - Part 5 - Finishing the Book - Marbled Paper & Casing In
Вставка
- Опубліковано 13 лют 2021
- Follow along as I bring the Handmade Book project to its conclusion! In this video I finish work on the case of the book. I trim out the leather and in-fill with card stock to bring the boards level with the leather. This has the effect of pulling the cover boards out of shape, so I line the inside covers with bond paper to counteract the pull of the outer paper.
Next I take my handmade marbled paper and burnish it with beeswax and an agate burnishing tool. From there I cut the outer papers and glue them to the book covers, finally completing the case. Then I paste down the endpapers and nip the book in the press overnight.

Never thought I'd watch 5 videos about bookmaking!
There was a time when I never thought I'd make 5 videos about bookmaking! Thanks for watching.
I watched all as well.. it's the most peaceful thing ever.
myself either, but how cool, Isn't it?
@@welland2026 yep
me too 😂😂
Bless your hands sir, that was a lovely journey with you. I am so happy people still making quality books and journal like that , I just love it so much a beautiful art indeed.
Thank you kindly!
I was mighty tired today after hours of work and classes both from home which is indeed affecting my health. I called it a day, started UA-cam to watch old Discovery Channel videos in bed on how crisps, chalk, etc are made in factories, that led to watching how they print the NY Times, that led me to you. Watched the first two parts, got up, brewed coffee, watched the remaining 3, amazing mood, rush of energy and now I'm back to my books again.
My point is, thank you kindly for these excellent videos and spreading happiness. Best wishes to you
Spreading happiness is a worthy achievement! Glad you enjoyed it.😊
as someone who's new to the book binding world and working on projects, your videos are incredibly helpful! I don't always need full tutorials, just a "here's the order do to things in" and your videos are just fantastic for that. Watching you work is so soothing
With these videos I tried to aim somewhere between a tutorial and a documentary, so I'm glad they work for you!
I didn't exepct to feel like crying at the end. This book just came into being so beautifully 🥲 Thank you for these stunning videos
You are so welcome! I'm so glad they connected with you.
The entire process is just mind blowing, I knew there was a lot put into making books but never thought it was so satisfying and the way you made it was just so delicate, I absolutely loved the series!
I'm glad you enjoyed the series. Thanks for watching!
Several years ago, as a spinoff of leather tooling, I began repairing some worn Bibles and tooling the covers. I am of mixed opinion as whether or not I wish I’d seen your series before I did those precious books. On the one hand, you taught me a LOT that I wish I’d had the insights into. On the other hand, if I’d seen the beautiful, skilled work you did here, I may have been too intimidated to attempt it. What little I did learn from others at that time, I learned from an Algerian bookbinding craftsman. I spoke none of his language and he spoke none of mind, but from our non-verbal communications, he understood what I wanted and did a masterful job of showing me enough to get me through my projects. You just showed me a totally different level of skill! Thank you for doing that!
What an intriguing story! I haven't had the benefit of an old-world mentor, only other books and online resources. But I'm glad you found something worthwhile in my videos.
I sat down to a movie with food.food cold and tea cooled down... Mastery in your performance. Best regards
You can really tell the amount of love and hard word out into this piece! The amount of detail and making sure everything is perfect is outstanding.. you are a true master of your craft! ❤️
Wow, thank you! I wouldn't call myself a master, merely an enthusiastic student. This project wasn't without its mistakes, but I'm always trying to learn and improve. I do appreciate the feedback though!😊
Solamente dos palabras: ADMIRACIÓN y RESPETO. Enhorabuena.
I especially like you to be left-handed like me :) I am fascinated by the bookbinding world
Hello to a fellow lefty! Thanks for watching.
Mai visto niente di più bello....complimenti il tuo talento è indescrivile, sei un patrimonio dell'umanità.
Wow you have always made quality content. Great filing. Love the voice overs you do now though! I learned so much just watching you in this video though. I am going to be making my husband a book for his first Father’s Day as a father 💕
Just watched all the others 3hours ago
Today is my lucky day
Glad to have made it a little bit brighter!
Beautyful craftsmanship! Dear sir, you are a good teacher! If i ever get a chance to own at least a garage, i'll start making books too. Some are dreaming of burning cities down, im dreaming about making books. :) Thank you!
Thank you, the world needs more dreamers like you.
Beautiful.
Wonderous!
THIS IS ART.
What a lovely end result and process. Thank you. I'm starting to try and start getting into bookbinding to fulfill a desire to make my own notebooks and this is incredible inspiration. The medieval build was always just amazing. Always love living breathing history in the form of technique and trades!
From start to finish, what an amazing craft! I can see the importance of precision cutting. Not that I will be making a book like this anytime soon, but I sure enjoyed watching all the steps it takes to make an incredible and beautiful handmade book. Even if it has no 'talking', thank you for this well done tutorial.
Thank you very much!
Beautiful! 💖
Excelente
Perfect job 😮
Quelle satisfaction!🙏👍 Certains gestes et actions mériteraient un petit commentaire pour comprendre.
This is not just a book, it's a jaw-dropping masterpiece!
Thank you, you are too kind!
@@FourKeysBookArts Do you sell these books?
Not the one in the video, but I have a nice selection of other books available in my Etsy shop here: etsy.me/2VGqhcr
Merci. It is beautiful !
Looks absolutely beautiful
Now I see what you meant by the PVA setting up faster and being unforgiving compared to the Wheat Glue you use in other videos. It was obvious when you cut the teeny strip of blue leather. Meticulously done! ♥
What a beautiful book!
Guauuu!! Bellísimo...
Absolutely amazing
Thanks!
Beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
Mesmerising! Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
Absolutely breathtaking!
Thank you very much!

Thank you! 😊
This brings back long forgotten memories and a gratefulness. Mr.Amery was a teacher at my junior school, 9to13 yrs. he taught us art and craft, and bookbinding was one subject, we even marbled our own paper! This brought back happy thoughts and a realisation of the hobbies/ crafts Skills I now use to make a living.....I’m a framer, I glaze copper, I I draw.....and am pretty happy. Thanks mr amery!
I wish I had had a Mr. Amery when I was younger! Instead I had crabby math teachers.

Wow, thank you!
I'm never taking a book for granted again. Good work!!
You and me both!
This is one of the most beautiful processes I have ever witnessed. Like others have expressed before me, I felt as though I could weep for the sadness of this lost art, and the joy of its representation.
This whole process was absolutely mesmerising. What a beautiful book.
Thank you for saying so!
Fantastic
Thanks
Dude youve got so much time! No seriously its brilliant.
lol - and yet there never seems to be enough. Thanks!
Clicked to see the first one, ended up binge watching the process until the end. Thank you, for demonstrating this awesome craft, I am sure I will try to make a notebook for myself :)
Thanks - have fun!
Thank you so much from algeria 💖
Welcome!!
I really enjoyed the series. I began with the intention to learn one thing but learned other things. From a theological and bibliophilic perspective, it is much like the beginning of creation. The process is a rational, generative potency, a new creation from the likeness and mind of the book's creator. Yet its full potential, promise, and life still lay ahead. Free to wander and wonder, but dependent. Its dependence becomes independent when fully expressed in the words, then its essence becomes communicable and hopefully, fruitful. Thanks, I really enjoyed watching it.
I often contemplate what my journals will become. A blank book leaves my hands and in time becomes something altogether different, transformed by the mind and hands of another. Thank you for such a thoughtful comment!
ABSOLUTELY STUNNING....you are amazing and although I've never done bookbinding, I was totally immersed in the tutorial. Thank you!
My wife and I make hand made books but not of this style. I really enjoyed watching the art as it progresses to the finished piece. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Such perfection and care.
I would love to own a hand made book.
Amazing
