ORIGINAL: • 2CELLOS - Thunderstruc...
I have always maintained that Classical Music was just Heavy Metal without electricity.
You should check out some stuff with the shamisen…
@@FromRussiaWithLuv007 I learned to appreciate the shamisen after watching "Those Snow White Notes".
Beethoven was the OG rock star ❤
Apparently a lot of classical pieces that we know about are actually played slower than originally intended so yeah...some of them are supposed to be played like this kinda fast.
Beethoven, Moonlight Sonata, 3rd movement, on electric guitar and it's true to the original!
2Cellos, on tour, have stated that they bring a BUNCH of bows because they can go through several in one performance. In an interview they'd stated using 8 for one show.
Witnessing the death of two bows.
Haha😂😂😂😂
They're personally keeping luthiers in business with bow rehairs lmao
Shredded like these dudes' forearms, no doubt.
@amicooke1790 I would bet dollars to donuts they have 6-pack abs on their fingertips, too.
omg, people still discovering 2 cellos, years and years after they split and went their own ways and are now in their late 30s, almost 40 years old. this was when they were so young, fresh from universety... was at few of their concerts, literaly they do shred those bows, usualy 1 bow can handel 2 songs in their concerts coz they play so agressivly, check smells like teen spirit live in sidney opera, check full concerts videos and you wil see sometimes they literaly take new bow in a middel of playing..
The bow, regardless of what its used for, is always made with horse tail hair.
The metal strings used for an electric instruments chew through bows totally.
A lot of bows are actually made from synthetic hair. To buy a bow made from REAL horsehair is going to set you back a chunk of change.
@@Zoom_1012 Sadly true - the few synthetic I tried long ago felt HORRIBLE. Maybe I should test again, because my aggressive style on bass goes through a lot of hair! 🙂
male horse tail hair, for chemical reasons
I love watching videos of these two guys, they are so talented and I do love the sound of the cello! This cover of AC/DC's 'Thunderstruck' is amazing and it's great to watch. 2Cellos were a Croatian cellist duo, consisting of classically trained cellists Luka Šulić and Stjepan Hauser. The duo played instrumental arrangements for cellos of well-known pop and rock songs, as well as classical and film music. They split up in 2023 and they continue to be active as solo performers. Some other songs they covered are 'Back in Black', 'Candle in the Wind', 'Every Breath You Take' and 'Livin' On A Prayer'. Thanks for the reaction, Anthony.😊😊
They also toured with Elton John, a crew member showed him a vid of the duo and he was hooked. He had the manager call them up and offer a place on his tour.
Thank you ai
khm... Luka is from Slovenia :P
I've seen them in concert and they go through several bows. It is one of my favorite concerts. They are truly amazing!
i mean they can afford it
Are you familiar with Apocalypitica?
Love it when an artist can make the instrument sing, cello, guitar, violin, any instrument
I've seen this performance through a couple other reaction channels as well. Most are amazed, but I really like that AR stopped to look up a couple things he did not know and to explain some things I did not know. 👏👏👏
I was fortunate to go to a live concert of 2Cellos in Auckland (New Zealand) a number of years ago. They are incredible in concert, and their videos (like this one) are always brilliant. An extremely talented duo.
This band or Classical duet "2Cellos" has been my favorite classical group for 10 years...I absolutely Love them!!! They are extraordinary high tier musicians.
Had a conversation once with a friend where he said he always thought Beethoven was Heavy Metal and Mozart was Pop.
Beethoven is emo
Vivaldi is metal
That would make Paganini speed metal
Beethoven is is rock, not heavy metal, but if he doesn't listen to metal I do understand where he's coming from with that statement. Mozart is very poppy. Chopin played your love songs, but he was a romantic era composer, so no surprises there. Vivaldi is symphonic metal. Bach is probably best described as pop rock.
BTW, there was no looping- the bass/percussion was switched from Sulic to Hauser (and was switched back again). Watch again and you’ll see. They actually have two completely different styles to their craftsmanship, Hauser is more subtle. You definitely want to open this can of worms. I have seen them perform twice. Exhilarating!!!!
These guys are exceptionally talented, no doubt. But there is 100% looping xD Yes, they do sometimes switch back and forth. But you can clearly see at 7:53 that one is hitting the back of the cello, the other is doing the melody, and neither of them is playing the back and forth sound that is constantly playing in the background (a variation of 2:25). Hard to explain through text. But there is very obviously 3 parts there, and that is just one example. When he calls out the "ting. ting" in the background at 9:10, one is doing the melody, one is doing the lower base part. Neither is playing the part he called out, there are probably 4 parts being played there. the variation from 2:25 and the tings from 9:04
2 cellos is one of the best instrumental groups! Played cello in high school and the bow is horse hair and has to be restranded more than once or twice a year lol
It's called rehairing the bow because typically it is made with horsehair and you apply a resin to it to give it the proper ability to slide across the strings. And breaking it like a rockstar would be insanely expensive cellos can be like 10 - 20 grand.
My "beater" cello is $3000. My cheap bow is $300... and even they can run up into the $1000+ range.
The rosin [ made from purified tree resin ] is not so much to make the horsehair bow 'slide' across the strings, as to provide friction and 'grip' the strings, causing them to vibrate.
@johndeeregreen4592 interesting, when I was playing violin, my cheap bow was around $50. I'm curious why the price difference
You have to see at least 1 more video of theirs - a live performance called 'Smells Like Teen Spirit" - two words: ELECTRIC CELLOS !!!
thank you.... :D Here I go...
If you like electric cellos you should check out Apocalyptica
They actually do this live. No looping ...however they have added a drummer a time or two and yes Angus surprised them.
Hi Anthony!!! You appeared on my tablet and was so surprised to see you were reacting to 2 Cellos and curious to see how they did Thunderstruck. This wss so much fun to hear and watch. I had the great pleasure of seeing them live in 2012, as the Opening Act for Elton. I was blown away. During a song they played with strings flying around the whole time. I guess they were using new bows in between songs but I didn't notice. I was captivated by their music and genius at doing classical and popular modern songs as well. Thank you for wanting to expand your horizons and those of your followers as well. Appreciate your appreciation of all genres. Next time......🎼🎧🎹🎺🎸🎷😊
I first saw this when I was 11 years old...it blew me away! I binged watched it for weeks and then I discovered classical music. I have never gone back.
These guys can also play this live, so I don't think loops were used. They could have put a few takes together for the film, but they do these songs live too.
Absolutely brilliant. I love these classically trained musicians that bring in rock or techno. Vanessa Mae doing Vivaldi, Lindsay Stirling, even The Charlie Daniels Band doing The devil went down to Georgia.
I recommend watching their Verona concert. No re-takes there, and you'll also meet their incredible drummer too
Watch their live performances, they're AWESOME! & yes, they shred the bows, which are made from numerous strands of horse hair!
Even in classical music, some musicians caused quite a stir. Franz List's music made people faint--and there was even a term for it: Lizstomania. Like Beatlemania, but in the 1830s.
And then there was Stravinski's Rite of Spring--which caused a riot in 1913.
Their concert in 2012 at Nîmes in France was so crazy. They are so talented
It is common for the strings on the bow to break, but they wear out according to use. These young men use them hard!
I took my teenage kids and their friends to a 2 Cellos concert, and they LOVED IT! So did I. Awesome stuff!
Saw them live a while back, they do change multiple bows in a performance. R.I.P. 😅
I have seen them preform this live. Legit one take at the concert I attended.
I was at a 2 Cellos concert once. I didn'd count how often they changed bows, but it was almost after each song, 2 songs at the most
4:31 it's a bow
Usually, in music videos, what you see is not them playing the take that you are hearing. This makes it easier to first make sure you have the song, and then you can make it look good.
So we got the silence twice.....and you talked through it both times. Well done!
I LOVE these guys! They do it all! They’re serious artists, they do rock, classical, and they are very funny!
You literally hold your breath during the silent moment waiting for the beat to drop again.
Shredded that BOW 🎶 🤘🏻♥️
Saw them in concert in Seattle, they were amazing!
Aaahh yes. This cover is a certified classic at this point. Thanks for reminding me of it, I’m going to listen to it again. Also I was impressed by your commentary. You clearly know what you are talking about.
Yes they loop for live concert
Can you imagine only hearing church hymns and minstrels then hearing a full orchestra in a concert hall.
They are shredding the bow, fantastic video.
Who knew wood could be so metal!
Anyone into folk metal
@AllanTidgwell Rammstein??
Slavic power! They're from Hrvatska 🤘🏻
You should see these guys live. I saw them at Radio City Music Hall in NYC. Absolutely incredibly entertaining show.
This is absolute excellence, with the cello. My Dad played and wow, it is not easy. An excellent review and critique of same....Thank-you............
Your stunned expression at the beginning was hilarious. I will point that that they are exactly the same when they perform live, because they are usually swapping roles.
One video you need to see is their live performance of Smells Like Teen Spirit at Sydney Opera House.
It is a brilliant rabbit hole of 2cellos to traveĺ down. I especially love With Or Without You, Demons and the various heavy metal they liked performing
I believe each of them got through several bows each live concert.
Catch this one live - these guys' concerts are 🔥 One of my favorite pieces is "Mombasa", performed live at Santory Hall in Tokyo. So glad you discovered them, and hope you continue down this rabbit hole! (check out any live concert performance, too) Thank you for sharing this!
"Could you imagine if metal came out at that time?"
Baroque period 1600-1750
Antonio Vivaldi 1678-1741 (he composed La Follia around 1705, and at about 7:30 you'll basically hear heavy metal)
Thia is honestly historically accurate. It's just the specific composition that's an anachronism
Dang! He tore that bow up! So cool.
I love 2 Chellos!!!!😊❤
You should see their cover of 'They don't really care about us'.
En sus conciertos la tocan en vivo y es asombroso ❤
These to guys are crazy good!!🔥🔥
They do Smooth Criminal and many more you will love it.
Music has been around for a *very* long time and instruments used to be non-existent. :) Harpsichords came before piano's and sackbuts came before the horn we hear today. When you think about it, a guitar is just another stringed instrument. Have fun. Music is a universal language and all are welcome.
Straight 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Called a bow!
"imagine if heavy metal came out at that time",
My friend let me introduce you to Wolfgang Amadeus
I always liked their take on The Trooper the best. Video is awesome too
Johnson will love this........... ha ha
Also, have you heard of a group called "black violins" it is 2 african american brothers and they do hip hop violins!!
they also have videos of live performances playing this and other songs.
Cello is a sexy instrument. I love it soooo much. XD
While the cello is sexy I will say that the double bass is sexier
If you want to hear and see all the amazing ways you can play an acoustic guitar, I suggest something from Alexandr Misko. He covered many classics, from Michael Jackson to Linkin Park, but his original track "Dubstep Guitar" is still my favorite.
People forget the lifestyle of those "classical" musicians being paid by kings, lesser royals and even the general public before wax recordings were available, but they were living the rock star life style of their own time.
Or at least they were living it, even if they couldn't afford to do so. They needed to have the talent and the oomph even on instruments that couldn't do what the piano introduced to the classical music when joined with other traditional stringed instruments.
A piano is a percussion instrument. A guitar is similar because it doesn't employ a bow to lengthen the note, although I guess it could but the the register would be rather high and quite bad to the ear.
Check out Apocalyptica's Cello cover of Metallica's Nothing Really Matters (Metal played with classical instruments) and their concert cello cover of Edvard Grieg's In the Hall of the Mountain King (classical played as metal played with classical instruments as a metal concert).
Re the bows, yup. For every concert they have like 5 bows each LOL. Passion, man.
Totally fantastic 👏
Even the strings are destroyed.
There is a drummer playing in the background, also plucking the string in 6/8 time...very cool.
The silence is called a Rest.
I would like to hold a little bit of silence for the instruments in this song.Because you know they've gone through at least 4 bows and 2.
String to instring the instruments
I never thought anyone could spoil this 2 cellos segment ever but you did.
I’m going to see HOUSER in concert in May! He is amazing!!
I guess you're not ready for that kinda music yet... but your great great great great great grandkids are gonna love it!
Oh Strings are definitely meant to be used for percussion. The most basic technique is to just slap or tap on the body, for bowed instruments like the Cello there are also techniques involving the bow. You can use the back of the bow to gently tap on the strings, this is called "col legno" ... There's actually 2 variations of this, the one used in this performace is where the Bow is basically turned to the side and you hit the strings with the hair and the stick and another one, more percussive technique, where you turn the bow completely and hit the strings with the stick only.
I love the 2 Cellos. This video opened with Vivaldi The Four Seasons, Spring. The Bow is strung with horse hair. Depending what and how played the bow will need replacement sooner than later about every half year.
The speed they play they go through more than one bow in a performing. Its the same with violinists
Hello, I am from Croatia, the country from where are the 2 Cellos. In fact Stjepan Hauser is from my home town of Pula. Any way, 13 years ago in the concert hall / ballroom of the old Austro-Hungarian building in Pula, they made a music video of Michael Jacksons ''Smooth Criminal'' and that video went viral. ua-cam.com/video/Mx0xCI1jaUM/v-deo.html ... their cover of "Smooth Criminal" became a hit on UA-cam, receiving over three million views in the first two weeks ....but to see their energy you can also watch their live performances... ua-cam.com/video/gNVNsuh5B8g/v-deo.html (about the bow, it has strings made of hair from a horse's tail. To be able to produce sound, the strings are smeared with rosin. Rosin is a hardened powder created by distilling the volatile components from the resin of some types of pine. They make a beautiful sound but they are also fragile , especially when you play cello like 2 Cellos do). Thank you for your reaction, I like your reactions and your nice deep voice.😉
See the thing about the Bose on cellos in violins and stuff like that is that there's actually quite a few hairs on them and them fraying off like that is normal during performances cuz you got to remember that thing is made of a bunch of nicely stretched long hairs but I guarantee you they didn't switch out their bows with multiple takes on this because you'll see as they jump around how the bow has those phrase throughout the whole performance is just some angles you can't see them
2 cellos LIVE ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
You should check out Brass Against. They play metal covers... but with a horn section, bass and drums. Plus Sophia Urista (vocalist) has the most mind bogglingly powerful voice. She's my spirit animal
You should see their cover of The Trooper by Iron Maiden.
It's INCREDIBLE.
Seconded!!
@martinarscott3524 😉
If I remember right without checking a classic cellos strings are made from dried stretched pig or goat intestines and the bow string was made from horse hair.
RIP those bows 🤣
wow!
the utter devastation to the bows is one of my favourite parts of the vid, so fitting for the style of music too. The Who stage destruction but renaissance
The bow isn't called thread it's hair. Actual hair. Musicians don't touch the hair on the bow because of the oil on our hands, it destroys the hair.
This is so cool.😱💕👍🦇
It's a bow
The first heavy metal composer was a guy by the name of Ludwig Beethoven. You may have heard of him. And the first shock rocker was Niccolo Paganini.
Beethoven's first name was Ludwig, not Wolfgang.
Wolfgang is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
@@PebblesBlue Ooops, my bad. Thank you for the heads up. I have corrected the original post. Thank you.
@@spacecadet35 Hey what was Mozart if not a rockstar? You clearly just tried to write two brilliant composers at once.
@MissCaraMint Mozart was more pop than metal. Maybe the Bowie of the era.
@@spacecadet35 I can see why you would say that, but I maintain that Don Giovanni goes hard into Rock territory, oh and the Requiem too.
5:47 with these guys a bow needs rehairing every 6 to 12 minutes.
As a Drummer, there a 4 ways to Hit something. As a bass Player, there are at least 5 ways how you may hit a string... ad a bow, you get 3 more
His foot is tapping to keep rhythm.
also check out Apocalyptica (and their Metalica covers) - they have 4 cello masters ;-)
I am a violinist and I was quite shocked to see the one guy slapping the back of his cello.
Many people may not know this, but inside all stringed instruments in a very important thing called a "sound post." It is a small round-like piece of wood that is precisely wedged between the back and the front of the instrument. In my years of playing I've had my sound post unwedge itself. Forceful hitting could dislodge it from the front and back and becomes loose inside the body of the instrument. However, there is a crazy looking tool you can buy to re-set it by going in through the "F Holes", but it is VERY VERY difficult to do and takes a lot of patience.
they could have just been replacing the bows with new ones as they played.
I saw Stevie Ray Vaughn live at UIUC back in 86-87 or so.
As he was playing, he would break so may guitar strings that there would be a roadie waiting next to him with new guitars, handing them off to him as he played.
He would seamlessly switch guitars and keep playing. This could happen quite a few times in a single song.
Are you talking about the Bow? And just to point out that they are jamming so hard the hairs of the bow are snapping.
BRILLIANT
