Great teamwork on this one guys. I’m highly impressed my dynamic duo is absolutely phenomenal. And Ryan that sit down ending was spectacular very heartfelt
Yah, he pretty much nails it the way it is. Rare do I find someone giving reviews that thinks a lot like I do. And expresses those thoughts very much like I would. It is refreshing.
The most off roading these cars will do will be speed bumps at mall parking lots. Can't wait to see the next attention grabber using crabwalk at the mall.
If it didn't have the price tag of $100k or damn near, I'd disagree with you. But nobody is gonna spend that kind of money on an off raoder. It might get some use down a dirt road to a gravel trail to a lookout point for a sunset selfie for instagram
this doesn't seem very "off roady" for an off road vehicle. Its got lots of gimmicks, but lets be honest. This car will mostly be bought by people that will never see off road.
Are off road vehicles these days really driven off road? I'm sure there are some, but most of the time, its 1% of the time. Real off road drivers would never buy this anyway. They'd get some Jeep Wrangler something model, Raptor whatever, or 4Runner.
Just a clarification, the Rivian does not do tank turns. It's a feature that was advertised but then not offered/disabled because of the differing terrain traction can cause the vehicle to become unstable and dangerous.
@@aconfusedazn I agree it was a cool trick. I'm just happy they didn't release the feature only to have a customer get into an accident due to using it. Whether the decision was made to avoid liability or to protect lives it is appreciated either way. In that regard the company has more integrity than Tesla seeing as they have no qualms at all with using their customers as guinea pigs.
@@treborheminway3814 I forgot to mention that. I think the only one that uses hub motors that I'm aware of is the Endurance EV truck by Lordstown. Haven't heard much from them since the employees took over the company from the conman/former owner and they shipped a few trucks. I guess they're supposed to be doing the manufacturing for Fisker and had a bunch of cash dumped into them from Foxconn so who knows? They might make it. That would be a nice ending to a terrible story. After all, it's not the employees who did the crime in that area needs that factory.
This car is completely impractical as an Offroad vehicle, impractical as a on road vehicle, impractical as a electrical vehicle. I can see most of the owners that will buy it. Ones who buy something they don't need, with money they can't manage, to impress people they don't even know. All the Karen's and Chad's, your throne has arrived.
OK, I just had my 2000 Grand Cherokee up a road much steeper and more rocky than this tiny "Logging road" test for over half an hour and it handled it easily. 4WD low, Low-range the differential locks and it goes anywhere. It's what I bought it for over 20 years ago. Seriously it makes this test kind of look like a $100k joke.
Nobody complains about having enough power to build a new Walmart of Amazon distribution center, both of which use significantly more power than a charging station.
@drivingsports I'm not anti electric vehicles. Big box stores have predictable energy use that the utilities can cover. But can we simply trust utilities to deal with exponential growth in energy use when we see the large population states struggle with reliable output? Right now, electric vehicles add around 1% to the total demand and utilities are saying to trust them to handle what's coming. Fine. I guess we'll see.
Sorry you had to come into my town to charge!! The lack of range over our passes, especially while towing, will always be the reason I won’t even look at an EV “truck”.
OK. I have seen a few reviews of off-roading vehicles. This video should serve as Off-Road 101. It provides a clear picture of the goods and the bads of that pursuit. Ryan's comments at the end are extremely valuable. Of course, my favorite spot in this video is when Ryan says, "Can't hit the berry bushes!" this video is a 10++++!
My hummer H2 came with magnet covers for the doors and sides so when we went in the woods off-roads and you hit the tree limbs and bushes it did not touch the paint job…..no scratches except for those people with keys who are jealous..
Great review. I think a crabwalk would be very useful for off-roading on slick, icy, snowy mountain roads where the road slopes towards an edge. When you start to slide towards the edge, it would be nice to be able to turn the front and rear wheels mountainside (towards the mountain) and lock the front and rear diffs to pull you away from the edge/cliff side. I've done a lot of winter off-roading, and generally, with a truck with no rear-wheel steering in the scenario above, your ass end starts to slide towards the cliff while you turn mountainside. I think crabwalk would reduce this phenomenon.
The charger issue is why as a Michigander that visits the UP bought a Bronco. I wish I could do electric, but without having abundant charging stations. I just can't feasibly do it.
Good to hear you are having the same battery charging problems as we are here in Germany. Okay, the Hummer would be much too big here and doesn't fit on a single street or in a parking lot. One battery charge and you're just stuck.🎉
I would be very interested in if crab walk would aid getting out of a "2 wheels in a ditch" scenario. Recoveries on hilly/curvy/mud covered one track roads can be tricky. I will admit to sliding two wheels off the road a few times, and sometimes it is a real PITA to recover, with one wheel pivoting deeper into the ditch or into a tree. I'm very curious if this could simply crab walk out without pivoting and completely eliminate that issue. The last time I did that, backing up was the only option, I had to take out half a dozen (small) trees to allow my nose to pivot further into the ditch to get her lined up to escape.
with the technical off-road trails I think turning on and off rear wheel steering along with crab mode would allow some better control rather than having rear wheel on the entire time.
No doubt that the electrification of vehicles is an unstoppable ship. I agree with Ryan that the charging infrastructure is sorely lacking and that the auto manufacturers need to get involved. EV owners cannot rely on EA and the others at this point, and we certainly don’t need the USG getting involved any more than it already is. On the bright side for now (at least for non-Tesla EV owners) is Tesla beginning to open up their SC network. However at this time Tesla’s level 3 chargers will not charge vehicles like the Hummer EV at nearly the full rate. Out of Spec Reviews just put out a video explaining this factor. Thank you Ryan, we appreciate all your content!!
Not sure that fragile applies, all first gen vehicles are a risk to buy and ALL of them are a bit of a maintenance nightmare till they get fleshed out. From everything I've seen on the Hummer the issue isn't with the mechanics it's with the software. That doesn't excuse GM for releasing a buggy product but this is the reason why people are told to never by the 1st Gen of literally anything. Thankfully those few people who purchased the Hummer will be the guinea pigs for the Silverado because the same software is going in there.
The charging infra and times will definitely be the limiting factor in adoption. I just can't grok how an equivalent parking lot of cars at costco gas would work w current ev charging tech.
I think if you buy such a vehicle you should get a charger installed at home with like 20 to 50kw DC so you can just charge it at home. Like this only the rare times remain you need to go somewhere far...
Alot of vehilces have rear steer? Mercedes, Audi, Range Rover, who else? Wheels turning more than 5 degrees not just alternate wheel breaking or torque tricks?
Final verdict after watching the Hummer here and on TFL, it's a poser. Great for showing how much money you have, but little else. Listen closely, and you'll hear endless excuses for it's off-road performance. Try to do some actual work, be it towing or hauling, and its range is decimated. Which triggers more excuses about the charging infrastructure, as they have to yet again charge it up for hours. Honestly, if one was give to me for free, I'd sell it.
Preface: I *love* your channel, your reviews, your insights - my umbrage lies solely with the car. Tragic visibility and over *9*,000 lbs?? I premierly detest this vehicle. The push for larger, heavier vehicles is not only wasteful but actively puts pedestrians, cyclists, and other motorists at serious risk. Massive L for society.
I'm very surprised that gas stations don't put charging stations in. They wouldn't even have to get rid of any of the pumps, every gas station I've ever gone to (except for REALLY tiny ones) had at least some parking for customers that just wanted to go in the store. Put the chargers there. They'd get a ton of business too, people already know where their local gas stations are so when they switch to an EV they'd just keep going there. Might even increase their store sales, people wanting to buy a snack while they wait for their car to charge. There's not really any reason for them to not do it.
Test it on the river crossing and rock climbing. That off road..go to the bush and take an extra battery hahaha.. gass cab put in cannester when touring . I wonder how the electric car works inside the bush. can it be charged by solar?
The tires are the most important thing on any consumer oriented vehicle. Crab Walk for well over 100K......it should service you and cook you breakfast. (Wait for the summer recession......see how many of these vehicles are sold and reviewed 800 times for views..this is like a long shoreman reviewing a luxury yacht with helipad.) [If you can afford it, you can afford to repair it. It's not for someone who reviews it.]
Rear lockers? You said it was on but the rear was slipping at different speeds than the other side. Fake computer “lockers”? Or is it even locked when one wheel doesnt even spin.
IMHO the crab mode does not actually allow you to get around tight turns/obstacles.. It needs More space.. Only use I could think of is for easyer parallel parking. Not for twisty off-road situations. In these the 4 wheel turning is actually much more useful.
Most people don't take 100k plus vehicles off road. Think G Wagon and River. These are meant for plowing down a highway or parking lot. Why "reviewers" act so out of touch I don't know.
The problem with these electric 4WD systems is they are not 4WD at all. They work just like a full time AWD with and LSD. One axle spins and then it grips. Thar doesn't happen with real 4WD
I have a bad history with GMC products. Not 1 of them has been reliable or w/out issues. Yes, they make some interesting products, but that does not give them a pass in my book. This monstrosity is as interesting as any other unique vehicle out in the market. But IF you follow some of the issues it has already had, you might rethink about purchasing it. There are a lot of #'s in that purchase price that one would expect it to perform flawlessly out of the box. But that just is not the case. I was hoping EV tech. might give GMC some leverage to regain some of the trust they lost, but that too is not happening. So, if you like the ridiculous and unreliable, go for it. But my money, time and the need for a 100% peace of mind every time I get in my vehicle says this thing is not for me. As you said, you will get a LOT of attention. And that is not a good thing. It will draw the haters in as much as the ones that adore it. It is a target waiting to be vandalized just because of how ridiculous it is. Or stolen. But if that is a risk people accept, enjoy. lol
I've watched a lot of videos on this, and I have to say other than straight line acceleration, there's really nothing impressive about it. It seems like in every video something on it doesn't work, in this case the front locker, and TFL has had all kinds of issues with theirs. Just not impressed. I think the SUV may be a little bit more useful, but I'd still much rather have the Rivian. I'd also like to have that Toyota jacket, haha.
Electrify America should be ashamed of themselves. It's the same around here in California - 1/2 the chargers are broken at any one time. When was the last time you came across a completely broken gas station? Terrible.
They advertise the crab walk as being an advantage in narrow canyons, of course an even bigger advantage is driving literally any other 4x4 instead of this monstrosity. Pretty sure a Geo Tracker would be more capable than this.
I'm not getting it, the vehicle is much bigger diagonally then it's actual width how it can be even advantage in canyon S curve then just pointing it through?... To me crab walk would actually help to get away from tree instead keep hugging it with just front wheels steer
I’m getting so sick of the anti-EV and anti-Hummer content but you’re still reaping the rewards of reviewing one. GM I understand it is marketing and all apart of business - the hood and the bad, but I just don’t think I’d be sending my top products to people who refuse to be unbiased and have a clear agenda. There’s too many organizations and people in this business to put up with it. The title is so silly. What’s “weird” about it? They could’ve said so many other things; impressive, versatile, capable, etc? It’s _all_ of these things off road.
can't believe this car doesn't have a selfie camera. This is a must for all its future tiktok owners.
Your talking about 360 camera?

The key to crab walk is to not give it too much steering angle.

Outstanding review.
It would be wonderful if they make a midsize version of this. Less expensive and less heavy
The TOYOTA label on the shoulder hints at what real truck will bring the generator to charge EV OffRoader in the middle of nowhere. XD
That car definitely makes me reconsider electric car market for sure
I mean, offroading an 998 HMMWV was already such a pain, and those are like, what, 5,700lb?
Charging stations have to at least triple in order for EV to be viable in this country.
Electrify America: "Best I can do is triple the number of broken chargers."
TFL also had a broken front locker button so looks like GMC need to actually fix there hummers b4 a massive recall is needed
The bed size is just enough for a petrol generator charging this thing while driving XD
5 tons Earth crushing fun!
How did you get the precise aerial shot?! Amazing
The charging infra and times will definitely be the limiting factor in adoption. I just can't grok how an equivalent parking lot of cars at costco gas would work w current ev charging tech.

The most amazing thing about this truck is that it did not ELECTRIFRY
Nice virtual rear locker that doesn't seem to "lock" the tires together.
Some weird behavior there. Maybe a software fix?
Alot of vehilces have rear steer? Mercedes, Audi, Range Rover, who else? Wheels turning more than 5 degrees not just alternate wheel breaking or torque tricks?

Nope

This hummer has plenty of power, it’s just the wrong tire for your off road test…those tires are meant for paved road and light 0ff road…
1,027-kg per wheel...wow
This car is so lovely useless that you have to love it

I'm not getting it, the vehicle is much bigger diagonally then it's actual width how it can be even advantage in canyon S curve then just pointing it through?... To me crab walk would actually help to get away from tree instead keep hugging it with just front wheels steer
Warzone 2.0 vibes
I think the 1st gen Hummer runs circles around this monstrosity off-roading. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Why would anyone buy this thing? (besides Roman)
It's a cool vehicle but who's going afford a vehicle over $100,000
I’m getting so sick of the anti-EV and anti-Hummer content but you’re still reaping the rewards of reviewing one.
Yes, weird. Rear-steering makes for a "weird" experience when you're used to "standard" 4x4 set-ups. (As noted in the video.)
What's the top speed one can go on crab-walk mode?
For $100K + and 9K lbs., I'll pass!
he wears a TOYOTA JACKET
I have a huge pile of brand jackets. If its cold, i wear the warmest. Lol.
Good luck finding parts or people who know how to work on them. $100k...smh.
