if you liked this, you’ll ABSOLUTELY LOVE the music and videos from her How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful album. the passion, raw emotion, and sound of it is just :chef’s kiss: she actually made the videos for that album into a “movie” called The Odyssey. you should check them out!
I know it’s a very recent drop, but your commentary on the power, femininity, sarcasm, and language with which Florence sings here makes me very curious as to how you would react to her new single, King I’ve been analyzing the lyrics and music video of that one myself
So the song is about getting ghosted in a relationship. Alot of the choreography imitates different types of spirits/ghosts/modern horror ghosts from around the world. (Purposeful or not idk) The hopping is like the chinese Jiangshi, the throat noise and the water are similar to the ring, the water and and being dragged into the sea is reminiscent of La llarona, as well as the korean Gwisin.
Big big fan of this amazing lady & one thing I solidly relate to about her, is some of her main influences. You can hear them in some of her body of work, as the feminine immortals that they are: Kate Bush & Stevie Nicks. Dunno if you're familiar with Kate especially, but as an early Gen x, I am. Fell in love with her as a tiny tot with her mystical voice & wild interpretive dance. I learned she was one of the 1st to use early computerized syths & sampling in the 80's with Fairlight sampler. & she always had layers of ethereal, desperate, unnerving self-vocals. As chick singers (me too) aside from where that lands one on an artists journey scale, we very early in life know our more clairsentient tribe. Or peeps. Whose camp we belong to. We're from the witchy, feminine but super strong, interpretive movement, other-world stuff.... & all extremely different but yet so similar. You either get this kind of art or you don't. It's somewhat inherent, empathic, another kind of soulful.... Stevies a big fan of Kate, Kate a big fan of Billy Holiday (soulfil) Bjorks in there, so is Tori, so is PJ Harvey.... it's a frequency thing with reviewing how we can bend vocals towards the veils... She's blown me away since dot 😊
i'm not into 'pop' too much, not that flo is that really, my thing is Rock and metal, things like that, but florence and the machine get played every time i put some tunes on.
