Talking to DIY Magazine, Florence states: ‘Big God’ was written about that feeling when someone has not replied to your text, the modern phenomenon of ‘ghosting’ which is one of my favourite words but not my favourite feeling. I was describing it to someone and they said to me ‘you need a big god’, as if the need in me were so cavernous it would take something enormous to fill it. Probably something bigger than a text message.
i think florence is not religious, she said in some interviews that she's fascinated by different religions, religious symbolism and gods of different cultures, but she's not religious herself. also, love how you're interpreting the song and the video so far, even if it's not always what flo had in mind making it, it's great to hear what people get from it watching it for the first time!
If I word this correctly the ‘big god’ is what we used to fill the empty void inside us, our distraction from the things we haven’t dealt with. So here, she’s become obsessed with a guy who’s now ghosting her. But why is she so bothered? Cos her pouring her love into him and the relationship distracted her from her own pain and loneliness. Some other ‘big gods’ people use would be things like alcohol, religion, social media, drugs, creating art (which is Florence’s and she brings this back up in her new album), partying etc. they are kind of like coping mechanisms that deal with the pain but over time you become obsessive with them and they destroy you as you’ve lost control
I think the word you were looking for at the end concerning the video (and you kind of said it) is 'minimalist' rather than 'basic'. Her other videos are full of images and such but this is very spare so and it seems to focus on the dancers and the song. I think this video, the song, and her voice are absolutely stunning. Also, you're the first person I've seen so far who equated that last sound of hers to The Grudge, which I did also. Also I can't remember if it was The Grudge or The Ring where the ghost had her hair in front of her face. I don't believe that was Florence's intention though. I don't why it was like that. Maybe just to equate it to the witchery of the Goya painting she's trying to emulate somewhat in the video. Also I was thinking that the noise at the end was put there to express the pain she was feeling. She's holding her stomach and looks to be in a position of trying to relieve her pain somehow. Also I think I read somewhere that the colors and/or the varied dancers are supposed to represent different sides of herself (I'm not sure though). I really enjoyed your reaction. You seem to be on the edge of your seat and very, very involved in what's happening. Love the sound of your voice too, btw.
Wow Florence is so interesting, I really liked the video and the corrography ... I was surprised when the dancers floated and Florence was under them. Great reaction !!!
Enjoying your video so much! So Florence grew up going to Catholic schools, but she isn't religious herself. She thinks of herself as more spiritual than specifically Christian or religious. She uses a lot of biblical imagery and references in her work, but she humanises it. For example, one of her songs is called Delilah where Delilah actually becomes a character in her story that isn't just the biblical stereotype. One of the lyrics goes "Never knew I was a dancer, till Delilah showed me how". She has been one of my favourite artists for over 10 years now 😊
The way I understand this song is that she is bitter than this man has so much power over her. I think she is suggesting that he is playing God by ignoring her and by sending her the message that she isn't important enough to reciprocate her love. Like any god, he/they require absolute devotion, but they won't give the same back. She is almost contemptuous of him in this song.
Plese can you try to woch and listen first the whole video and then you take a part whole song!! Thet is how you get the better understending of her poetry.... No she doesnt speak acualy of GOD this is a metafore.. she neds somthing beager in her life somthing beag like feith in God...
"You need a big god". The person is a Narcissist. Narcissist are their own god. There is religious references in her music, but it's never about religion.
I think it's like, the emptiness in you is so much you need something bigger than even religion to see you through it. You're going to need something impossibly huge to fulfill whatever you're seeking if she wasn't enough when she has so much love to give. Also Florence isn't religious but she pulls inspiration from paintings and mythology and myth. The bible just happens to have a lot of dramatic stories that are actually rewrites of other stories from other myth. ( Ever wondered why God is always painted as this older, strong, muscular-ish bearded man enthroned above in the sky surrounded by winged beautiful beings able to strike anyone down at any time? Sounds like . . . Odin, sounds like . . . Zeus . . . the angels sound like . . . The Valkyrie and lesser gods & cherubs. )
Fans have noted that part of the choreography seems to be inspired by Francisco Goya's painting "Witch's Flight"
O wow. It do look very similar
