I met a guy who had a massive accident on a bike and was really sincere about not wanting his family to worry about him getting hurt again, so he got into one of these. Said it gave him some of the thrill, without the guilty conscience. I see it.
Prince Xamim Get a journalism degree and try not to get brainwashed by the neo liberal Marxist factory. Hopefully you make it out the other side covering what you love.
The straight cut gear whine sounds awesome! Don’t know why anyone would complain about it? It’s like the whine from a supercharger, the whistle from a turbo, or the rattle of a dry clutch... all awesome noises!
I dont get the hate for these things. Its a fun toy for people to cruise around in, if you want a motorcycle you go and buy one. Only reason Polaris didnt give this a 4th wheel is because then it will legally be classified as a car and have to go through a hell of a lot more regulations and tests and it will be a 50-60k car.
Yeah, it's a vehicle that exists because the US has no light car category. Legal terminology (like calling any vehicle with less than four wheels a motorcycle) isn't really something to be upset by.
I have a buddy that has one , and I’ve driven it a couple times , they are a load of fun . The most annoying thing I found though ,is you cannot avoid potholes , ether one of the front wheels get it or the rear wheel catches it .
Every since they were introduced in late 2014, they have sold quite well for us. Most of the kinks have been worked out so I would tell anyone who's been contemplating getting one, to go for it. The hold up very well. We had a demo that got beat very hard and it ran perfect for many, many miles till it was sold. Solid vehicle. Practical? No. Fun? Oh yes!!!!
I don't understand why people compare it to other vihicles. I have one and I love it. I get in ,enjoy the thrill of the ride and the wind in my hair. Polaris you done good.
Personally, I LOVE the straight-cut gear sound, just like the Triumph Street Triple...that's a subjective thing though. While I really like the the Slingshot, I could never justify the purchase, unless I had a ton of extra cash just laying around. This is not a daily driver(rider?), in my humble opinion, but it looks like it's fun as hell. Another great video Zack. Keep them coming.
What I was thinking. That POS is MORE than a Miata, not to mention slower, worse handling, worse ride, several orders of magnitude less safe, and unspeakably less cool. A used S2000 is even better for even less. Slingshot is for poseurs.
More tire? It only has 3. In aggressive cornering the TC shuts the party down to keep it from looping. Have you actually driven both? there really is no comparison.
Steering wheel, H-pattern gearbox, handbrake lever, seatbelts, big (for a "motorcycle") engine and lots of weight. Funny how they still call it a motorcycle. Nice car tho, I bet it's a blast to drive. I do wonder if you can get away with trying to lane split with it tho hahaha
Since motorcycles are identified by having 3 or less wheels on the ground, you should actually get away with it, right? Not sure about the details in the US. I don't know how traffic policing in the US works, but in my country an officer might pull you out and explain to you why something - even if legal - might get you in trouble (as in, how it's dangerous).
MrFriday00 "cars" have much more regulations to meet than "motorcycles", which cuts the price of the slingshot in half. I feel like Polaris knows it's not a motorcycle but has to bullshit to get past the government
It has less to do with Polaris calling it motorcycle and more to do with the fact that it is legally classified as a motorcycle because it has 3 wheels. Hence the requirement to wear a helmet, etc... As others have mentioned, cars are subject to far more regulation, have to undergo crash testing, meet all kinds of safety requirements. Motorcycles don't. These types of 3 wheeled vehicles are kind of a gray area, and so having no special legal classification for them, they meet the legal classification of "motorcycle." I think it's clear to everyone that it's not a motorcycle except my legal definition. Perhaps if these types of 3 wheeled vehicles become more popular, a new legally defined class of vehicle may be developed for them, as they really don't fit well in either the car or motorcycle category.
Call it what yeah want, but we love our 2017 SL model, sunset red / slingshade. Purchased ours in July 2017 new and now have close to 7500 miles on the unit. With our Iowa weather we have a limited time to drive it. It's a machine that not everyone likes, but that's why they make sooooo many vehicles that you see on the road. The ride you get used to, it doesn't ride like our 2016 Avalon. but doesn't have a 48K price tag by any means. I might end in saying I just turned 74 years old and having a great retirement with my wife. Enjoy life and live a little, life is too short!!
Simple solution. Get all the attention you want, and respect of motorcycle enthusiasts by saving a few more bucks and buying the Ariel Atom. Zack, you my friend sounded like the smoke'n hot girl who didn't have the courage to say no that one weird kid who was first in line to ask her to prom. To be honest, we've all been curious about him. Rad review. They all are. Please keep 'em coming!
I rented one of these and rode around la and I've never had my picture taken so much every where we went there was a crowd around us it was a total blast!!!
I think the gear wine sounds cool =P The engine is a 2.4liter ecotech engine, its the same engine that came in the Saturn Sky or Pontiac Solstice. Haha when I drove one I call it a magic carpet because you're so low to the ground.
Its not turbocharged they have an NA version, you probably thinking of Fords EcoBoost. But... they did have a turbocharged version of the Sky so.... maybe you could do an engine swap. I think there are turbo kits for them also. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_Ecotec_engine#LE5
That was more fun that I should be allowed to have on a Monday morning before 7:00 a.m.! Wouldn't own one, but enjoyed the ride. You make me laugh, Zack...
Calling it a motorcycle is just a way for polaris to skip normal safety standards of a typical car having no roof pilars. Front engined, rear wheel drive, drive shaft powered... It's a car. Cant blame them for that, it looks like a fun toy and anyone actually buys into the "it's a motorcycle" thing knows nothing about anything. I bet its a blast to screw around in.
RoadsterWill507 I think people who own one have extra money to waste, another words they can afford it n those that hate are jealous cus they CANT afford it n always say they rather buy a car. LOL
Everyone needs to grow up , what the guy meant is it's a Motorcycle BY LAW , that's it . Plus come on , an enthusiast is an enthusiast , it's not like This'll replace bikes or anything . Just enjoy the weirdness of it , i actually like it when MC commute shows unique stuff
My ideal sporting vehicle is a very lightweight, 4 wheeled, single seat, fully enclosed, with a highly responsive chassis/suspension tuning and a high/quick revving engine. Ideally powered by a relatively small displacement inline 6, boxer 4 or 6. Manual transmission or even a form of “auto” that allows exceptionally quick and smooth shifts at the full control of the driver(either in a drive mode or by default). Basically a street legal, more practical, more weather resistant go kart to spice up your commute or lay the smack down on my BRZ(or Miata) in smiles per mile(already quite high).
I test drove one of these and really enjoyed driving it however my biggest complaint was the steering seems very underwhelming. What I mean is basically you have to turn the wheel a lot to get it turning which isn't that bad when you're on the highway but in a parking lot it's kind of ridiculous.
Test drove one of these while waiting for financing on a bike. I've driven stick almost exclusively for 3ish years and rode for a year and this handles most like my 76 Corvette than anything else I've driven, especially in the way the back end slides. Oddly enough, I test drove it in a no helmet state and was required to wear a helmet, which I had because I was prepared to ride between the two states on my new bike at the time
These Slingshots always garner a lot of attention in my town. Not sure if it’s good or bad attention lol. Btw when is the new Honda rebel review/commute? Great job as always!
Love watching y'all ride liter bikes! Zach you a hoon brother!! Love y'all's stuff. I got some wheelie vids you guys would like but probably shame me for.
First mods? Two Brothers exhaust, power commander, K and N filter, Zero Gravity windscreen...uhm... tail tidy...and uh, horizontally glue a mirror onto the dash for when you pop wheelies so that you can see the traffic behind you? Oh, and some knob tires for some dual sport adventure!
Admit it, you can own a motorcycle and still want one of these. I own both. You really can't compare it to a bike, because it's not! Don't rule it out until you drive one, LOTS OF FUN!!!!
Nice video, Zack. Listen, I am not a fan of this thing at all. But Polaris managed to build a unique vehicle. It looks to be a great toy to have some fun on. But it's a 30 thousand dollar toy. And though legally defined as a motorcycle, it just doesn't fit my description of one. That said, if you have the money and the garage space, why the hell not? It does look like fun. I wouldn't mind having a go on a track. I think I would have more fun in a properly prepared MX-5, though.
I know NOTHING about these type vehicles, but thoroughly enjoyed your insight and review. There is one for sale locally for about 24K (used 2017 w/upgrades) and I was curious what anyone would be getting. I did wonder what the effects would be of getting it wet inside or exposed to weather without a roof. I think I'd want one to avoid any damages OR mayself getting the effects lol. TY for the well done information and your thought !! BTW: no way in heck this old lady will be getting one, just wanted to know what I'd be missing ! 😊😊 I HAD sports cars when younger, but a Toy 4 Runner now, which I love !
Bit of a novelty, would be more interesting if it was 800lbs lighter and had a 170hp bike engine instead of that lump. Something like a vfr1200 - but guess that would mean more (expensive) engineering to drive the rear wheel. The next commute 3 wheeler should be nothing less than the Yam Niken. Bikes in general - the MT09SP if it makes it to the US, and whether the suspension upgrades make a real every day improvement. And have you done an MG v7?
i get it. it's some toy for those guys, either they have lots of cars, bikes, or both, an then bought this because why not, used them 1-2 times and then sit in storage till the end of days. but hey, it works for polaris, and anyone that really made these weird things into production really are highlights of the automotive history.
I brought one in October 17 . Its been a blast so far . One reason i bought it was after leaving the dealer ship one evening from a demo ride. I was riding my motorcycle home on a 6 lane hwy here in Mn running with traffic around 70 or so looking for a few bigger pot holes i knew were in the road but couldn't think of exactly where they were . Got home thought about that for awhile and basically the pot hole and road debre made my decision . Hope i worded this enough to make sense
Fun toy for a small niche, not everyone can ride a motorcycle and not everyone can afford to insure a sports car - enter the Slingshot to save the day.
To me it just looks like a budget middle life crisis toy with decent power to weight ratio. Although not a motorcycle, could be fun for sunny weekends!
IIRC Polaris adds the motorcycle warning for legal reasons. It's the state that determines what type of vehicle it's considered as. My state has a special category for it, some have it classified as a car, and in others it's a motorcycle.
The Slingshot; it's a motorcycle! No; it's a car! Hmmm...this sounds familiar... New Shimmer; it's a floor wax! No; it's a dessert topping! You're both right!
It has all the disadvantages of a car with none of the advantages. The should atleast have given it a fabric roof, a proper windshield and some thin doors.
Be nice to reply after you have experience with what you are talking about. Caterham is 40k+. Slingshot is 20k to 31k. If you get the lowest model and customize it, you are way under a price of a Caterham. You can go in and come out of a corner hard, even with three wheels!
Now I kinda want you to do comparison with the t-Rex and a Morgan in Tricon shoot kinda thing. Just for curiosity to see how they stack up to each other.
It's only a "motorcycle" so it doesn't need to meet certain safety classifications. I'm pretty sure the steering column isn't collapsible on this thing, for example.
Not this! If I was going to get a low, completely open “car” that I needed a crash helmet to drive it would be the Ariel Atom or perhaps the KTM X-Bow. On the other hand if I really wanted something with exactly 3 wheels then it would be the quirky and totally beautiful Morgan 3-wheeler. Either way, not this! Well done though Zack for trying it out so I don’t have to!!
So I'm pretty big into saving money and being stylish all at the same time but trying to decide between 2015 slingshot or 2016-18 R6 as daily driver in LA?
It would be cool to hard mount a 360 camera on the dash so we could watch you or the road. You could also edit that into a non-360 video cutting back and forth
I didn't even know he could drive a car
Polaris: This is a motorcycle
Also Polaris: Wear a full face helmet
Also Polaris: let's put cup holders in here
Polaris: A snowmobile with a birth defect.
I'm sure they can sell you a nice flip lid to match!
It should come with straws so you can drink with the helmet
Phyde4ux ROFL
TwinSpinner It already has 2 cup holders. 😀
I met a guy who had a massive accident on a bike and was really sincere about not wanting his family to worry about him getting hurt again, so he got into one of these. Said it gave him some of the thrill, without the guilty conscience. I see it.
Does this guy has the best job in the world or what?
Prince Xamim Get a journalism degree and try not to get brainwashed by the neo liberal Marxist factory. Hopefully you make it out the other side covering what you love.
I don't think Zack Courts got a journalism degree, but yeah...that kind of stuff maybe help a little
@@CalTN or if you are naturally gifted downstairs you can get the actual best job in the world xd
more of a toy, really. it has the worst of both worlds, but its fun.
hahahaha certainly doesn't have the best of both worlds.
is more of a toy for rich peoples in my opinion.
"why" is an even more valid question if that is your S2000 in the back ground...
BBI Productions same question would rather see that than a damn ecotech gm 4 banger review. Gosh damnit
The straight cut gear whine sounds awesome! Don’t know why anyone would complain about it? It’s like the whine from a supercharger, the whistle from a turbo, or the rattle of a dry clutch... all awesome noises!
So you can technically lane split since it’s a motorcycle?
citizensauto If you can fit
Yes, between two motorcycles.
Haha exactly... Its NOT A MOTORCYCLE
Prolly just need air bags to be a car. Motor is already approved for cars
DJ MotoVlogs because they call it a motorcycle, if they called it a car then it would be fine.
Jack Laughlin Its much more complicated than that.
Yeah, it's a vehicle that exists because the US has no light car category.
Legal terminology (like calling any vehicle with less than four wheels a motorcycle) isn't really something to be upset by.
BillyJoe1305 It also isn't a reason to call something something it isn't. Legal technicalities typically don't follow actuality.
I have a buddy that has one , and I’ve driven it a couple times , they are a load of fun . The most annoying thing I found though ,is you cannot avoid potholes , ether one of the front wheels get it or the rear wheel catches it .
11:22 the most iconic part of a manual shift

NOT A CAR, wait, wrong channel
bfchang oh how the tables have turned
i see you're a man of culture as well
Does it come in brown?
does anyone still remember FINK?
I don't understand why people compare it to other vihicles. I have one and I love it. I get in ,enjoy the thrill of the ride and the wind in my hair. Polaris you done good.

Come on, Zack! Drop that thing and do a video about that (beautiful) S2000 parked right there!
What I was thinking. That POS is MORE than a Miata, not to mention slower, worse handling, worse ride, several orders of magnitude less safe, and unspeakably less cool. A used S2000 is even better for even less. Slingshot is for poseurs.
Alberto Knox a slingshot is faster than a miata
So is a Camry if you only look at 0-60, but top speed? Track speed (with corners)? Not even close.
wut?its lighter and has more tire
More tire? It only has 3. In aggressive cornering the TC shuts the party down to keep it from looping.
Have you actually driven both? there really is no comparison.
I share your pain with the not being able to lane split. I rarely drive my car but when I do it kills me.
TJ quit driving at peak times, then
I wish.
TJ Drive at Upside Down!
I love the sound of straight cut gears!

Fun is ,mrith, amusement, enjoyment and playfulness so it sounded like Zack had fun and that's what a toy should be.
Call it what yeah want, but we love our 2017 SL model, sunset red / slingshade. Purchased ours in July 2017 new and now have close to 7500 miles on the unit. So its a miata with one less wheel and no airbags or roll cage
The valve cover even looks exactly like the one on early generation Miatas
Simple solution. Get all the attention you want, and respect of motorcycle enthusiasts by saving a few more bucks and buying the Ariel Atom. Nice S2000! Seems like Zach has good tastes in cars too.

HadesOmega Moto it's turbo? I thought ecotec meant DI plus turbo

Cool to see a review of this. I bet it would be fun to drive one.
However, I can think of other expensive toys I’d rather have.
That was more fun that I should be allowed to have on a Monday morning before 7:00 a.m.! Wouldn't own one, but enjoyed the ride. You make me laugh, Zack...
That’s pretty good value actually, quite quick, fun to ride and of course the wow factor.
Best video on the slingshot I've seen yet. Thanks!
Yep... hearing you laugh as you rip through the gear.😂😂.. it's got to be a blast.!! Thanks
Calling it a motorcycle is just a way for polaris to skip normal safety standards of a typical car having no roof pilars. Front engined, rear wheel drive, drive shaft powered... It's a car. RoadsterWill507 I think people who own one have extra money to waste, another words they can afford it n those that hate are jealous cus they CANT afford it n always say they rather buy a car. LOL
Louie Brutus i rather strip down my miata, and swap the engine or place a supercharger in it.
Also your neighbors must have fun taking guesses on what will be parked in your spot next
a car has made it onto a motorcycle publication. god dammit polaris.
Its very interesting to see a "car" with no car regulations, no seatbelts - doors - airbags - overall safty equitment.
Basically a Caterham with weather protection.
In Illinois is called a "autocycle" and no motorcycle licence required to drive one...
So suburban middle-aged dads can feel like coolest guy in the subdivision.
I test drove one of these and really enjoyed driving it however my biggest complaint was the steering seems very underwhelming. What I mean is basically you have to turn the wheel a lot to get it turning which isn't that bad when you're on the highway but in a parking lot it's kind of ridiculous.
good observation about how it drives.
Straight cut spur gears sound so awesome in racing applications!
Everyone: omg this is so stupid.
Everyone who has drivin one: giggles like a child and understands
After watching this, i searched slingshot crashes
Googly Eyes try searching for motorcycle crashes hahaha
Let's see you do a wheelie with that, buddy. LOL! I would have put the Go Pro on the dash.
OFF Road review too
It may technically be a motorcycle, but to me it's just a tricycle with an engine.
this was fun. zack your funny. great video.
Glad you backed it in!
That’s not a bike. I call foul sir
Michael Cuellar I call you a nerd
This was very entertaining. I rode/drove one and drifted so easily. Cool but weird.
Test drove one of these while waiting for financing on a bike. I've driven stick almost exclusively for 3ish years and rode for a year and this handles most like my 76 Corvette than anything else I've driven, especially in the way the back end slides. Obviously you cant physically lane split in this but since its considered a motorcycle I wonder if its technically legal?
Ben P I was wondering the same thing about the seatbelt. Do you have to wear it since it’s a motorcycle or what
These Slingshots always garner a lot of attention in my town. Not sure if it’s good or bad attention lol. Btw when is the new Honda rebel review/commute? Great job as always!

That good sirs is a confused snow-mobile... Still love you guys though and still gave thumbs up.
Backing it in makes me question all of my previous thoughts on this thing.
@9:32 Cop: Pulls you over for driving in the carpool lane. You: Points to the sticker 'This is a motorcycle'. Cop: ...have a good day sir.
I know NOTHING about these type vehicles, but thoroughly enjoyed your insight and review. The dog in your lap protects you from your exploding takata airbag.

Does it have a cover in case the skies open up and what about security features? Also no parking lot donuts dude?
What? No wheelies? ;) Keep up the great work, Zack!
Hey, I was just wondering... what motorcycle do you and Ari own?... so what is your choice of bike?
Thanks!
If you HAD to have a 3 wheeler would it be this or Can Am Spyder?
Not my kind of ride... but sweet video! So much love for your vids keep them coming
I thought this was Cali, why is I always cloudy in these videos
because he leaves early in the morning
He actually backed it in, the mad man 🤣
Why all the hate? That thing seems pretty cool for a weekend ride 🤣
The gear whine is from the belt final drive. Probably a Polychain style Carbon Fibre Synchronous belt. Same noise as straight-cut gears.
The Slingshot; it's a motorcycle! No; it's a car!
Hmmm...this sounds familiar...
New Shimmer; it's a floor wax! No; it's a dessert topping!
You're both right!
No wheelies?
It has all the disadvantages of a car with none of the advantages. The should atleast have given it a fabric roof, a proper windshield and some thin doors.
it has all of the disadvantes of a car (width for example) but also all the disadvantages of a motorcycle with it's open design
I would get the Caterham seven 270 over the slingshot shown in the video every time.
You can get a roof for it
Roberto Arkenburg problem is the US has no caterham category and likely never will. I don't believe Canada does either.
Be nice to reply after you have experience with what you are talking about. Caterham is 40k+. Slingshot is 20k to 31k. If you get the lowest model and customize it, you are way under a price of a Caterham. You can go in and come out of a corner hard, even with three wheels!
Yup seemed wrong not wearing gloves.. Whether its a car or a bike, it has zero appeal to me
WOW that S2000 in the back, sweet
That's four cynlinders, three wheels, two seats and a partridge in a pear tree :D
My very first thought was “can he back it in?”
Zack! Is that your S2K? I love it bro. You have great taste!
That's a nice looking S2000 you got over there. Is that yours?
Strong NO.
Ladybug Adventures Nah it's cool. Don't look at it as a bike but rather as a fun little toy
Thats not a motorcycle!
Scandi_MC
What was your first clue?
Cool little cars. Ran across one on Ortega Hwy yesterday. Dude wasn't wearing a helmet
It would be cool to hard mount a 360 camera on the dash so we could watch you or the road. You could also edit that into a non-360 video cutting back and forth
"So the first question is why ..." lolz I am not sure the sticker saying it is a motorcycle really makes it so!
The Honda S2000 at 0:32 looks sweet!

"BUSA! Yeah get some!"
Zack is hilarious.
