I’m haunted by the image of Linus
Me to
I was just thinking about it
haha same
I think we all are and I don't even know who Linus is lol
You are not wrong my bro
I think it would be a really neat idea to integrate the touch ID button into your desk instead of a bulky dongle that can get knocked around on the desk. I wonder if DIY Perks would be willing to have a go at it?
on it
It’s not that hard. Just use a router to create a crater in the table top that the dongle can seat in. Then cover the dongle with a wood vinyl. Et voila.
It'd be easy. Just make a hole in the desk and then you're done haha. May drill a Touch ID-sized hole right into my keyboard deck and put the board inside. The options of where you can put stuff are kinda limitless, but I liked the idea of a dedicated module.
@@snazzy You could put an internal usb hub in that keyboard as well ending up with a single usb cable to connect them both to the pc.
DIY perks: lesgooooooo
Apple cares so much about environments
I love how 100% repairable their keyboards are
They are not 100% reparable, they have a glued bottom which is easy to break when getting removed
@@mralpha2518 Today's word of the day is sarcasm. The definition of sarcasm is "the use of irony to mock or convey contempt."
Thank you for this comment. And thank you Apple for making the world a better and cleaner place by selling keyboards like this one
haha even better, how fast they are dying just from a hint of moisture
@@mralpha2518 r/wooosh
Side note: That is literally the most middle finger in the air, anti-consumer, anti-repair design I have ever seen. THEY GLUED THE KEYBOARD TOGETHER.
I just love how Linus is just starting at you as you Hanibal Lectering of the keyboard
I know it’s an un-Apple like solution but for the longest time I’ve wanted Apple to build a usb webcam with the fantastic rear cameras from their iPhones with faceID. I’m sure a product like that will never exist (especially with continuity camera) but I can dream
That would take a leadership replacement at Apple.
Just use Continuity Camera.
@@Razor_Crest no because you require your phone, a way to prop it up/stand. oh and of course a supported Mac and iPhone. not to mention you can't use your phone anymore while using the webcam.
It’s not just the camera. It’s the DSP that goes along with it. Just use your iPhone with Continuity.
@@DavidRavenMoon Pretty sure all webcams also require signal processing, the raw sensor data is always basically unusable
I love how sustainably their keyboards are built! It's fantastic!!!!!!!!!
They really care about the environment!
@@snazzy LMAO.
@@snazzy lmao
Lol, nope
@@lukanvanderlinde r/wooosh
For the uninitiated ones: this only works on M1/M2 Macs, it won't work with an Intel based Macs.
Nooooooo😢
Oh shoot. Thanks for letting me know. I have an Intel based Mac in my recording studio that is always in clamshell mode. This would have been amazing.
even intel macs with T2 chips? why?
@@jonathanodude6660 apparently so. Because... Apple. You'd think that they would make it backwards compatible with T2 chips, but not according to the compatibility tab on these new keyboards.
@@TheStudioFreq I know right... The moment I saw these keyboards I wanted to get one for myself to have the fingerprint right there on the keyboard, but unfortunately I have an Intel Mac.
I imagine that this is a first step in a process that will result in me being able to buy a pre-assembled version of this (maybe in aluminum or walnut?), so as a Mac Studio owner who has graduated from Apple keyboards, thank you so much for making this happen.
Thanks so much for the Super Chat!
As a MechE masters student, I highly recommend the Prusa Mini+ tbh. It requires super minimal maintenance compared to many other entry level printers, and just works the vast majority of the time.
Love my mini.
The Linus on the table was fantastic!
who?
@@snazzy 😂😂😂
Wow. Very impressive project. Straightforward, plug and play, (great job modeling!) and an excellent and extremely practical end-use.
This is the type of content I like most from y'all, Quinn. Thanks for making it.
I would even go ahead and modify my already existing mechanical keyboard to incorporate this as a "module" by either modifying its casing or making an attachment in the same style. You can then splice the incoming usb connection to that keyboard for 5v and ground and then connect it to a lightning port/cable. Then you can have it work even more seemless!
3:00 gotta love the repair-friendly design and Apple’s commitment to reduce e-waste
We should show this to mother nature ...
If they sold this and it worked with Macs and iPads with Stage Manager so you do not have to physically bend over just to authenticate, I will buy 10 of them ASAP. Your move, Timmy.
What does Stage Manager have to do with anything?
@@AlejandroLZuvic Stage Manager runs on external monitor support for iPadOS 16 with M-series chips. Hence me saying Stage Manager. Should’ve specified but it is what it is.
I’ve wanted a “send auth requests to my iPhone” from my macs for a long time. That way your Mac could use FaceId (or touched) by proxy. Like it does with the watch!
If you have an iPad/iPhone with Touch ID, it should be able to authenticate in the mac
I love it how every project you do begins like a silly informercial, this is genius for all the Mac Studio, mechanical keyboard owners
I’ve been waiting for a stand alone touchID button since the new keyboards came out! This. Is. AWESOME!!
Amazing work!
You taught fundementals of simple mechanical design with CAD and some concept of DFMA sooo well!
I was talking about needing this with a coworker today and I’m so glad to see it was a success! I’m going to have to keep an eye out for a cheap Touch ID keyboard and follow your lead. I love typing on a mechanical keyboard but I miss all my apple features. Thanks for doing this!
Awesome video Snazzy. I actually complained to an Apple employee that this product should exist quite a while ago! So it’s awesome to see you build a product I’ve been wanting for so long. This certainly seems like a great project and if we can get a few remixes or third party batteries to fit with the logic board, to make the product as small as possible, I really think I’d take the plunge and buy one of these keyboards to build this project. Great job and looks amazing for your first 3D project!
Imagine if you could put a touch id button on a mouse. That would be so seamless but it seems difficult to implement.
I thought of doing this EXACT project a while back and even looked at the ifixit teardown and the only reason I stopped was the battery. Wanted a small adapter. Now that I know it works without the battery will definitely try this as I have plenty of those compact keyboards!
This is needed for all thee reasons mentioned. Great project.
This is pretty awesome, I want to try something like this for my desktop at some point
And just a tip so that you don't get made fun of by engineers - fillet is fill-et in manufacturing not fill-ay like with food
i feel like people who make custom keybaords could find a way to integrate this into a fancy mechanical keyboard similar to how apple does it, it might be super difficult and unreasonable but I have seen people do some crazy things so idk
I mean, I feel like the better solution would be to retrofit mechanical switches to a Magic Keyboard logic board. Could be a fun project
Someone is doing just that checkout on LTT forums :) Can’t post any links here without being triggered as spam.
I was literally googling a way to do this last week. Perfect timing!😊
Thanks for finding a way to do this. I've always wondered if it was possible. I just bought a Magic Keyboard with Touch ID off eBay. Can't wait to start this project.
He's not the first one to try it. But it is one of the cleanest builds I saw, that's for sure.
3:32 I like how he used a Linus desk pad with an apple product Linus will be or is mad 😂😂
would be awesome to integrate that into the old keyboard you already are using.
That's my plan, but that's hardly a replicable project. Hence this :D
there's been some fan mockups for hot swap mech keyboards with touch ID and the macbook's touchbar
Moar 3D print projects! Loved this one 😃
Wow! What a practical solution. Well done.
Great video! Now I have to buy a magic keyboard and try to integrate it into my mechanical one. Thanks for the idea.
I didn't know he had Linus's image printed on his table
Some of these little modules could be incorporated into the design of a mechanical keyboard to give them touch id functionality! Fantastic video, really sets yourself apart here from other tech UA-camrs
wow!!!! this is crazy inspiring and creative and snazzy!!! Great video!!!
Would it be possible to add a leg for the button to increase rigidity when resting on the back plate?
Dude. You figured out something I've been wanting for a long time. Thank you! Glad you found Shapr3d useful too - I use it to design HiFi speakers for building with my CNC and it does an excellent job there as well.
So cool. Great content as always, Quinn!
Great efforts and results.
The only problem is, nobody is talking about the the photo on the table! Is this Linus? Looool!
I'd love to see this integrated into a mechanical keyboard.
I was imagining exactly the same thing. The space is there in many cases but the top case would need to be custom made.
@@AlejandroLZuvic Some mechanical keyboards like the Keychron Q1 and many others have these Knobs for changing the audio volume. The sensor could go at that place, so the layout would be identical to Apple's Keyboards.
I’m working on it, but progress has been slow
@@_sabot yes, that'd work.
Yes, I hope also that this can be standardize so this can be opensourced.
meaning the keyboard send the data, and the computer decide to unlock or not, but this seems to be very far in the future (and not using a mac)
You should commercialize this - I would totally buy one
yeah me too!
So cool! Great video and love the final product!
I'm time traveling from October 2023 - very nice project. I happen to love my Apple keyboards, but I've long wanted a standalone fingerprint sensor. It never occurred to me to canabalize a "perfectly good" keyboard - and your demo was very instructive. Thanks again, and I continue to subscribe!
It's amazing that they don't sell a face id webcam by now. Wouldn't be that hard to make and it would be quite compact if they just used the same module as from the iPhone
What makes the iPhone camera great is not just camera, but the DSP and additional processing by the SOC.
@@ivanmalinovski7807 I'm sure M1/M2 could process it just fine
They can't get the module thin enough to fit in the MacBook screen yet. Will come in time I'm sure.
@@konicky but it definitely could be an external accessory for the iMac / Mac Mini/Studio/Pro.
I think they’re going to opt for encouraging further ecosystem immersion. Continuity camera just became a public feature, I’m sure they’re planning to lean into that. If you have an iPhone, you technically already have a faceID camera.
Ive said this for years. They should integrate the fingerprint scannera on the mouse. Windows hello should work well too
The mouse? That has the same problem as the keyboard: not everybody likes Apple peripherals.
@@AlejandroLZuvic Not just apple. I mean ALL mice even on Windows (I don't even use Mac)
Thanks for another stellar vid Quinn, love your channel!!
You are a master in the being original art, now more consistently than ever
I wonder if those boards can be trimmed down at all to make them smaller?
Without the board schematic you'd have to go through a lot of 'revisions' 😂
This is awesome! I’ve thought about the possibility of this existing for a while, hoping Apple would make it themselves (knowing the 0% odds of that happening). Nice work!
This is everything I want in a standalone TouchID device. Also, Analog is the shit. Love those task cards. 👀
Love it. Gives me some ideas now. I’ve been holding off on buying one of those keyboards.
Next step is to make a new chassis for your main keyboard to house this
Still don't understand why Apple hasn't had the option for Face ID in their monitors or iMacs.
Man what a good video, like now you got me into printing. Congrats on this quality content!
Awesome! Thank you!
This is fantastic. Ive been telling anyone that will listen that I think Apple should just make Touch ID a damn separate accessory, but perhaps now I can just do it myself.
I’d love to see apple release a standalone Touch ID button for those who have a T2 or Apple Silicon Mac but don’t want to use an Apple Keyboard, I fear for the price though…
Id buy one, I really dont want to get a magic keyboard just for touch ID. I like my mechanical keyboards
I think adding those guys to a custom mechanical keyboard shouldn’t be too hard. Added bonus would be the use of USB C if it’s done right. You’ve inspired me. I’d build one and post when it gets done if I could find a sponsor. Parts are a bit pricey for me at the moment
Absolutely amazing!
Loving my Bambu Labs P1P, previously had a Creality CR-10 (original), but ended up selling it to a friend
That old school keyboard has to have plenty of room for all those electronics in it. That would have been a nice way to go. Might even be able to do a mod to get power from the old port or convert the old keyboard to using USB-C.
It’s a Zinc case, and I doubt you’d wanna drill through it.
@@michaelbaim5060 pretty that’s a model M keyboard from the 80s
Do people still comment “first”?
Yes they do shut up
I did it once on my own reddit post, not so long ago, and got hated 🤦🏾♂️
@0:45 Lool!!😂 That needs to be a GIF 😊
For small stuff like the thing you plastic welded you can always just thread your screws into the plastic. You could even just make the posts, drill a small hole, then use a screw.
Love the deskmat.
I have had the same Magic Keyboard for 8 years, never had issues with it. Got it with my 2015 iMac. I love the thing! It hurts to see you rip one to bits, but neat idea!
Very cool concept. Loved the video! 🙂
Quinn, this is so cool. Such a great but funny idea, I'm glad you made it happen.
Glad you liked it!!
For items that are relatively flat that you need precise measurements use a regular paper scanner and take the scan into your 3d modeling software and scale it. As long as you can get it to scan it is by far the best method of getting dimensions of things like this.
This is such a simple but amaizing idea... and a realy fun video. I enjoyed this very much!
Thank you so much!
I liked the desk mate a lot ! at least someone was watching u live except ur team
integrating this to the table that the macbook or imac resides in is nice to see
Thanks for clearing the path to safely getting at them sensor. I got a used keyboard from ebay and successfully removed the touch id. Now I want to attach it to the side of my clicky mechanical keyboard)
i love that Quinn has the Linus deskpad, best purchase
Thanks for sharing your model.
I will never get why people dislike the Magic Keyboard, I always find myself back behind the Magic Keyboard, it’s just phenomenal!
Its honestly a horrible typing experience, its nothing like typing on a MacBook keyboard and when you've used superior external keyboards like Logitech MX keys you would never dream of going near one (I mean you might... everyone is different you know 🤷♂)
Exactly, every keyboard needs to be flat for ergonomics (no wrist bending up, just straight). No idea why Logitech can't figure it out and Apple did.
To be honest, you inspire me to be focused more on technology and knowledge. Thanks for the content.
Wow, thanks!
dude I've fantasized about this - good job!
This video is fun, great content… kinda makes me want to make one for my Mac studio
Great video!! 9to5Mac also made something similar but merging it with the magic trackpad
Finally a snazzy video , loved the implementation and thought of such a small but effective thing
Apple shd take cues from you
The linus deskpad make me fall out my chair! LOL
Cool project!
love the ltt desk pad 4:05
I'm certified in various industrial level 3D design programs, and the program which you used to design your case was surprisingly similar to "the real deal", it just needs the ability to handle parts with thousands of edits, and a built in simulation suite.
Cool! Thanks for sharing and watching. 😊
damn, 3d modeling on an ipad with apple pencil. ok, i'm sold. that looks so intuitive
Awesome project. Please make more projects like this from ideas that people write about they wished Apple would have made 🙂👍🏻
For example a ”webcam” with camera from iPhone that can be used for Facetime calls and Face ID to login.
Brilliant project!I wish someone had a webcam with faced built in somehow.
Great idea! Also I have that same gamers nexus desk pad, love it
noticed the same thing too lol
This is awesome! Personally I would replace the Lightning port with USB C if possible.
Love all your merch from other channels!
I would love it if you do a full video about Nreal glasses in the add.
Neat idea. When I upgrade my desktop Mac I might think about doing this. However if you're only using the sensor and the logic board why not just build it into your keyboard. Heck if it's got the room for it you could probably keep the batteries.
You can try and integrate the touch ID in the desk or the keyboard as well and I think that would be the best way to keep your touch Id
Love the linus tech tips mouse pad
I love Shaper 3D, it is so easy creating things I need with the apple pencil. The only thing is the pricing. Thankfully I can use it for free as long as I'm in college.
It would look so cool in metal!
Daaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnggggggggggggg I REALLLYYYYY NEED THAT AS WELL WISH THIS CAN BE COMMERCIALIZE
Dude that is awesome.
This was awesome Quinn
Thanks!
