Thousands of Palauans live in the US and serve in the US military without giving up their citizenship (and without the need to obtain a visa or green card). The US is their closest ally and many things in Palau are modeled after the US, as is the capital building you saw in this clip. All the while, maintaining their traditions and passing down thousands of years of culture to their youth. Part of this is the immensely important task of preserving the pristine environment.

The reason Koror is more developed than the capital: Koror was the capital of the place for quite a long time starting in 1919 when it was the capital of the entire South Seas Mandate under Japan. Ngerulmud didn't become the capital until 2006. The plans for a new capital have been in development since the 80s after ratifying in the 1979 constitution that the government should establish a new capital on the country's biggest island. Because Palau lacked architects, engineers, and had to import materials needed from other countries, progress was slow. It didn't pick up until the early 2000s when Palau received a loan of 20 million USD from Taiwan in 1999 (hence the plaque at 10:39; Taiwan has helped Palau significantly and Palau is one of the few countries to have an embassy in Taipei). The complex cost over 45 million USD to build, and put Palau in debt Only 271 people live in Ngerulmud, the least populated capital city of a country (not counting territories). This video answers the questions that came to my mind after watching my first two of your journey. They´re coming up in no particular order on youtube. While on one hand I´d like to watch them in the order you made them, watching at random is marvellous too. I don´t usually comment on youtube, but feel inspired to do so with your travels and your thoughts. It´s a great thing that a president asked to meet you. I believe we are an ambassador for our country wherever we are and to whomever we meet. You are truly a great ambassador for the human race. 100% admiration.
It’s so awesome you finally visited Palau 🇵🇼. It’s an amazing country, it might be small but it is packed with natural beauty and how they value nature is to be applauded. Amazing work Drew! Also you were here on Guam 🇬🇺 Drew you should have said hi 👋🏻 to your fans here including me!
Greetings from Germany. Great you have made it and of course it is a great experience to speak with a head of state. For a special project in Berlin I was searching for Palauans in Germany. The small embassy in Brussels never replied, the honorary consul in Hamburg stated "There are no Palauans in Europe, except the 2 diplomats in Brussels". So I called the Palau embassy in Washington and 2 days later I have had the contacts of two Palauans living in Germany ...... funny the honorary consul was not aware about them .... However, any border crossing intercultural connection is helpful to avoid the growing misunderstandings about other nations, countries, religions, cultures ...... The state is a gem of culture and natural beauty
I know right? I have to travel across the US frequently for work and I complain about the constant delays and frustrations. This guy travels 45 hours to get someplace like it's nothing. Hats off to him.
Well, his statement was wrong and I'm glad that he can now realize it. I mean, all presidents desire power and control. Why? Because they want a political agenda and they want to achieve it. It doesn't mean that this is their only motivation. They need to seek power in order to achieve want they want, whether it is to work for private interests or for the people.
I know that some political leaders are very accessible, especially during election campaigns but they would not want to spend time with a UA-camr whose audience is not national but international because they would lose precious time that they can use to meet people who are actual voters in their country.
It depends how long the layover is. If you actually go into the city for a few hours, I would count it. But not just stepping outside the airport for a minute.
Thanks for watching -- so many more incredible stories coming your way from Palau!!
