I'd like to add that there is another cleaning step that needs to be done to make sure that the brush heads can spin because I did all this cleaning and my brush heads did not spin. There's a part of the vacuum that needs to be cleaned that Dyson's troubleshooting doesn't tell you that I discovered after I contacted support. Hopefully they add this new information to that page. Essentially you need to take out the entire bin and clean out the back part of the bin where it's really hidden because the dust can block the metal contact points that send power to the brush heads. This is the area directly in front of the trigger. The way you detach the bin is by pressing the red lever to open the bottom bin door. Once open, press the lever again to release the bin from the machine. Hope this helps!
YOU WERE CORRECT LINDSEY!!! I did not have any debris in the head/beater bar area and then I saw your comment. I have often removed the bin but never thought of lint accumulating in the right angle area formed by the handle and the top of the vacuum. I removed the bin and when I looked up into the corner formed by the right angle I saw a very small clump of lint. I tried blowing it out but had to use a toothpick to remove it. I also notice the contact points you described. I put the bin back on and the vacuum work like new. Thank you for that info.
You can take off the back strip to help clean the shelf. You just undo the little grey, round screw head which is on the right if you have the head with the hose inlet on the top as you look at it. A £1 coin opens the big side lock. Good video, thank you!
So this is like the US only allowing OPEC to trade in US$, Duson only allows users to clean their vacuums with GB£ ! It's long overdue to be replaced with a universal screwdriver fit, or provide the key to open these flimsy plastic screws on the vacuum itself.
I used a $1coin, fits perfectly. I never knew that "shelf " was even there, mine was stuffed with linty stuff. I used the plastic grabber that you clean sink drains with, seemed better than wire.
An annoying rattling sound drew me to this excellent video. The instructions are superb for removing the brush bar. I used the edge of a bottle-opener to extract the brush. The V11 appears to have improved the shelf design, so it was relatively easy to clean. Anyway, it's all new to me, so thank you all for your brilliant ideas!
So thrilled I found this while I was searching for a new head for my V6 (about $200!) and all I needed to do was perform a deep clean as shown here, now working perfectly! Thank you so much :-)
Thank you so much! Exactly a year of buying my Dyson it stopped working. I trouble shooted and this is what the problem was lots of dust/ hair in that shelf I am so thankful I found this video before I was about to go buy a brand new vacuum! I love mine and would definitely rather just keep it.
Thank you so much! My dyson has been revving for a couple weeks, even after cleaning the dirt canister and replacing with a new filter, and I had no idea what the problem was. I finally got around to fixing it today (tired of using the old dyson I have) and apparently the brush head was totally blocked! Followed your video and now it works like new.
As Lindsey Lai pointed out if that does not work remove the bin and clean out the lint in the inside corner of the handle. This is my reply to her: I did not have any debris in the head/beater bar area and then I saw your comment. I have often removed the bin but never thought of lint accumulating in the right angle area formed by the handle and the top of the vacuum. I removed the bin and when I looked up into the corner formed by the right angle I saw a very small clump of lint. I tried blowing it out but had to use a toothpick to remove it. Very helpful as far as it goes. But I've found that dirt and cat hair also collects in the joint between the body of the head that you focus on and the tube to the canister. It's very difficult to dislodge the hair-dirt clumps when they get stuck in the joint crevices. I was hoping you would show how to completely disassemble the joint.
I sure wish you could be more descriptive of where that item is. I am looking all over this D7 rug head and have yet to find the item you are describing
@@kentestes9776 Hey, I made a video for you showing what I think they were talking about: ua-cam.com/video/bQ-Tg-hvBZY/v-deo.html I don't think this is what you were expecting but it does make it easier to clean that tiny shelf. I was here trying to find a way to clean the clear plastic cover, but it seems to be locked with a star screw. If anyone knows how to remove the top clear cover please let me know.
1:49 by your right index finger there is another small clip. Same deal as before, its a plastic locking component. Twist and remove the dust shield and you can clean the "shelf" a lot easier.
Kent Estes this dude literally put an exact time in the video and said exactly where in regard to his finger the twist thing was. If you still can’t see it, there’s no helping you.
Ken Estes - better picture at 0:13. Look at the upper right corner of the brush. There is a small light gray circle with a slit down the middle. Insert a coin in the slit and rotate 90 degrees, as per the tiny printed picture by the circle. I hope this time it works for you.
Thank you for the how to. My roller was pretty clean as well as the trough but when I pulled off the roller there was a huge dense dust bunny that was under the roller stuck in the mechanics. That was the culprit for it not working. So even if your roller looks clean, still remove it!
don't need a coat hanger...the other visible plastic screw releases the thin velvet strip and pops off thus making it easy to clean the plastic shelf! 😊
Brilliant, my Dyson V6 was just pulsing - thought it was the battery, so bought another battery. Made no difference. After hours of frustration I found your video and cleaned the filter.Everything OK now .......... thanks very much indeed.
So the shelf you are talking about has a button you need to UNLOCK on the back of the brush. Once upside down near where you are talking about the shelf look for a silver or gray button like the one to open the roller - this gives you access to clean the entire inside.
I cleaned all of mine but still rolls and then stops after a few seconds, it will start again if I wait 1-2 seconds. I think there might be some hair into the end of the motor where there is the open gap and you see the spring, how do you access that area to clean that? I checked the canister contacts and they are clean, I also have another direct drive head (smaller one) which works fine, so it's not the rest of the vacuum for sure, it's some problem located in the direct drive motor head of my V7 animal.
Who knew there could be so much hair stuck in the vacuum head... It's a wonder how I still have so much hair on my head. Thanks for the helpful video -- cleaning out the vacuum head was certainly liberating.
A jammed head may be only part of the story. Don't forget the filter that fits into the bit you hold. That also clogs up and needs a good rinse and squeeze in warm water. Drying it is a pig - it takes at least 24 hours and I discovered the tumbledrier was a bad idea! But once clean, the thing works again.
I know we are 8 years after since video was uploaded. Still... I just cover the motor with a bag and wash whole thing under shower head with cold water. It is worth to note that Dyson PCBs are conformal coated so resistant to humidity and therefore (if careful) thing can be simply washed / dryed and re-used as brand new part. If you don't believe me - drop me your email and I'll send you video clip of doing it Oo, and maintaining working order of it.
Haha, good luck finding something to open it, damn right. 🤦🏼♀️😩🤣 - Oh god, now I have to find a wire hanger and bend it just right. Still, thanks for the excellent video. Very helpful!
Thanks for nice video. My unit was pulsing and I had never cleaned out the head...wow with 2 Lab dogs it was so clogged up. Do you think none could clean it with water?
thanks so much. A really helpful tutorial. much needed as I had no idea how to take the tube thing out. simple and straight to the point . thanks for that
I see this is 7 years old….I think Dyson has rectified the dust collecting in this long slot as I don’t seem to have that on my carpet brush head. Thanks anyway.
I don’t think you can. I took mine apart (using a correct sized torx screwdriver head, removed six screws) and stil could not get to that end part where the small motor drives the brush roll. Grrr!!!
Nice tutorial sadly when I put it back now the roll makes a lot of noise when I put everything back :( I put on some DW40 but it still makes the noise.
Haha I saw the official video and you are supposed to remove the smaller brush plate first with a small coin or screwdriver then it is really easy to clean and also easier to remove the brush bar!!!
None of us are particularly dirty, but that won't stop the manufacturer arrogantly responding with "...never seen one that dirty before..." when the suggestion is put regarding the clogging inclination of their design. (The offending item was less gunked up than yours overall, but the micro wheels were completely bound up with hair strands)
I have never been more satisfied ,informed, and invigorated as I do right now by watching your video

Wow! Love to hear that

Great tip Lindsay! Mine was also failing to rotate but took your advise and voila! Thank you
Thanks for the help! This solved my problem and I'm so glad my vacuum didn't "hit the dust" as I thought it had! Whew!
Lindsey Lai exact problem I had. Thank you for your knowledge!!
Ahhh you are amazing! Thank you so much!
Problem: solved ❤ ❤ ❤
Used a spoon instead of a coin and worked great. Thanks for this video! Definitely helps extend the life of these
you are a lifesaver!!!!
I had no idea why my motorhead was performing so badly, and this completely fixed it. Thank you!

Came here to say exactly that. That whole cover comes off and makes cleaning out that area easy.
i can’t seem to put it back in 🥲
@@shaunkhambatta1848 me neither. did you figure it out!?!

This fixed it! The wire trick. Worked for my Dyson D44 five years later.

Thank you so much!! I used a 50 cent Australian coin to open it up and an old chop stick to clean it out haha. Absolutely legend, cheers !
Thank you very much. I was always frustrated by the amount of dust/dirt behind the "screen" and didn't know one could take it apart.
Great video thanks! is it okay to wash the brush with water? obviously not the piece with the electrical components but simply the purple brush?
Very helpful as far as it goes. But I've found that dirt and cat hair also collects in the joint between the body of the head that you focus on and the tube to the canister. It's very difficult to dislodge the hair-dirt clumps when they get stuck in the joint crevices. I was hoping you would show how to completely disassemble the joint.
I have the V7 and the back channel seems to have been redesigned to be more open and catches only much smaller particulate, thankfully.
Thank you for posting this there was a giant clog in a clear part of the hoover that i was getting out for 30 minutes
Don't use a wire hanger. There's another silver lock that you can turn and remove the plastic cover piece that is over the section behind the plastic.
I sure wish you could be more descriptive of where that item is. I am looking all over this D7 rug head and have yet to find the item you are describing

Thank you so much for this video! I almost bought a new attachment and they are not cheap!
Use little shovel/brush thing that comes with the vacuum, the tip of it opens the end cap.

How do you clean the V wheels on the head when they stop rolling?
Or you can take that “shelf” part off by turning the lock unlock button on that piece and take it off
Ooooh thanks! I needed to know that
Worked an absolute treat. Thank you for the clear & concise instructions!!

You wash the entire thing? Why not piece is apart and wash and the bin and other parts, leaving the rest out of the shower?
@unsharpen to save the hassle. You can take it a part but what is the point? Hmm
I haven’t cleaned mine since I bought it ( 2 years ago) there was nothing on the shelf. Just hair on the roller! Thanks for showing us!! (:
What about cleaning the see-through part of the head? I’ve tried to clean mine the best I can but that cylinder makes it hard.
Did you figure it out? I was shocked this video didn't help and that Dyson didn't make it to come off to clean?
USE A SPOON TO TURN THE KNOB IF YOU HAVENT FOUND ANYTHING! Works fine.
the other unlock screw on the underside of the brush head is to take off the entire plate that covers the area you were cleaning out...
Brett Wadsworth its faster doing it his way
Again...
I'm looking all over the head for that release mechanism and not finding it after removing the roller brush itself...
Not finding it.
Kent Estes dude. Have it with the open part facing you and the connector part at the bottom. Look at bottom left corner. It’s right there.
How to take off the running board the is parallel to the roller? There is a lock for it, but no direction on how to disassemble?
Haha, good luck finding something to open it, damn right. 🤦🏼♀️😩🤣 - Oh god, now I have to find a wire hanger and bend it just right. Still, thanks for the excellent video. Very helpful!

Excellent. Just what I was looking for. Thanks
Waiting for some coin collector to recognize that coin and say it's worth 100K in mint condition lmao
thanks so much. A really helpful tutorial. much needed as I had no idea how to take the tube thing out. simple and straight to the point . thanks for that
mmm that grey bit at the back comes off, it has a smaller lock turn, but now I am having trouble getting it back on!
Thank you so much! I am having same issue. The top motor is clean but when I have this attachment it stops working.
Thank you so much. We couldn't work out what was wrong because it *looked* fine.
Ours is now working perfectly again
Thanks!
I used a quarter and it worked fine.
How do you disassemble the motor in here? Wife washed the whole motorhead which is not spinning anymore.
I see this is 7 years old….I think Dyson has rectified the dust collecting in this long slot as I don’t seem to have that on my carpet brush head. Thanks anyway.
Swivel part has come off our Dyson, how do I get it back on, where should black and white wires be?
Don't need to LARGE COIN - use a flat head BOTTLE OPENER instead. Thank you for the tips!
thoughts on soaking just part of the motor head in a mild cleaning solution to loosen up the gunk?
Perfect instructions ! Problem solved ! Big thanks
How do you clean the back part of the wheel where the spring is?
I don’t think you can. I took mine apart (using a correct sized torx screwdriver head, removed six screws) and stil could not get to that end part where the small motor drives the brush roll. Grrr!!!
How do i clean that clear plastic cover???
Thanks for the video this help so much on cleaning out one of these

How do I reattached the beater bar to my Dyson v6

thanks, was about to buy new vacuum cleaner - worked a treat
Glad I could help

Thank you! I used a long stick to push down and pull

Can I use water?
Sorry... But I have gunk behind the beater bar holder. Not sure how to clean it

ive learned something 2day now my dyson is working great , I didn't notice the 2 bits for unscrewing,
Thanks for the video it was extremely helpful.

Haha I saw the official video and you are supposed to remove the smaller brush plate first with a small coin or screwdriver then it is really easy to clean and also easier to remove the brush bar!!!
I like your River City Ransom Alex avatar :D
Could I run it under water?
When I put my brush back on it's started to make a loud rattling noise. any idea what I'm doing wrong?
Larry Bundy Jr That's actually normal, it's just how the motor works.
All mine have broke the wires where it hinges.

How can I remove the tiny wheels? They collect a ton of crap too. Ideas?
Did you figure this out?

Turn it upside down and you will see another lock which can open the compartment and clean
Beautiul video!! Thank. you!!!
