I really like how this floor turned out for this inflatable boat! I can’t wait to hear what you think about it. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below⤵️ I am finishing up the video for the motor mount review and will publish it very soon.
Thanks for this video, very well done and you saved me a lot of time figuring out the best way to make a floor for our Seahawk 4. It turned a potential over a week project into a weekend success.
From the UK, great idea, I probably would waterproof the OSB board, but then would the carpet spray glue work ?..I have subscribed..Ray in the UK living near the NORFOLK BROADS ..UA-cam that AMAZING waterways STUNNING …NORFOLK BROADS UK
greetings from Italy and thanks for the idea, I have the same model in my garage, i have never thought about making a floor for it, I'll definitely try it! Should be used chemically treated plywood to avoid fast decay i think... Lorenzo
Gracias por el video buen trabajo tengo una pregunta para usted estoy para comprar una barca de la misma marca pero el 2 es buena para ir a la playa ? Gracias por responder
You should try fixing the 2 sheets together with a continuous hinge so you can fold them together, and they won't come apart. Also, the carpet should be enough if you folded it over the edges so the noodles probably wouldn't be needed. Great video.
I’m working on either a hinge or some kind of steel bracket to better join the two pieces of floor. I have modified the edges of the floor with great stuff expanding foam! I show that in my latest video for this boat. You can watch it here ua-cam.com/video/NKCrn6CCoGU/v-deo.htmlsi=G0zL7wWS7nxJVZLS
@mrfredsdiy - great video. Did I see in another of your videos that you tried plywood sheathing clips to join the boards together? Then you can remove them completely and the floor board would stack flush on top of each other? I’m doing a similar build now and debating between those clips vs a continuous piano hinge. Any thoughts?
@jeffm6029 I did use plywood clips. I have to say that I am not 100% satisfied with this solution. If you are in a position to store the two pieces of floor attached to each other, then a piano hinge might work better than the clips. I am considering making a metal two piece solution similar to how I mounted the seats.
@@MrFredsDIY Thanks. I bought two of these boats last week but have yet to even get them on the water and the floor mod looks like the first mod to tackle.
such a cool video! I am inspired to do the same! However I am looking at seahawk 4's online and they seem to have 2 "seats" that are part of the inflatable section...but your seahawk 4 does not have these "seats". Did you take them out?
Besides fitting in a car, is there any advantage to making the floor 2 pieces? And do you think a 1 piece floor would much stiffer than 2 or not really since it's on an air cushion on a lake? Thanks!
A one piece floor is definitely more sturdy! I had a one piece floor in a previous project and found it to be superior. That being said, one of the build parameters for THIS project was to craft a floor that would fit in a car or SUV and still perform satisfactorily on the water. I feel as though this two piece floor design checks both of those boxes. I am 6’ 6” tall & 225lbs and this floor system works just fine. It also takes less storage space in my garage.
@@MrFredsDIY I'll probably go there 2 piece way then, if I want to stiffen it up more I should be able to do it with a long pipe or two that can be be installed with at least 2 brackets per floor
Nine years ago, my first mariner 3 , I used OSB....you will find it absorbs any water that gets into boat, and then , the osb swells and stays, damp and heavy. The savings you gained by using OSB will ultimately cost more in weight and wood rot over time...Jus saying.
Agreed. I would consider waterproofing the wood and then add the carpet. Or better yet, use a vinyl or neoprene wrap. Repels water and makes it easy to hose off any sand or grime.
Yeah the floor makes a huge difference especially when you bring your dog on board I found you don’t even need the noodles it’s just the floor tucks right into the inner chamber and it’s not going anywhere
I find the floor very useful as well. I mostly use the noodle at the rear of the boat. The space between the chambers back there is pretty big and if I step on that area the floor pushes down.
Instead of wood, would XPE work? That way it could just be cut to size and then easily rolled up for transport. The goal is that if the bottom hits a rock and starts to deflate, I can last the rest of the ride. (Lowest class of rapids)
Hey gd night sir Fred, I'm from Jamaica 🇯🇲 this my first time owning a inflatable boat and found your video very interesting, however I would like to have and idea how much whats the cost for a small engine like that one on your inflatable boat
Here is a video with all of the mods I have done to this boat ua-cam.com/video/NKCrn6CCoGU/v-deo.htmlsi=LuquXEe2CA3nWjxE I have both an electric trolling motor and a Honda 2.3 hp gasoline engine. The electric motors can be found for about $200 and the gasoline engine run about $1000. I found mine used two years old for $800. Thank you for watching!
I love this video! I'm going to try in tomorrow! However, I'm a little iffy on the carpet due to mildew. Would that be an issue, you think? And is that plywood waterproof?
Those are legitimate concerns. The carpet that I picked up from Home Depot is indoor outdoor and is basically plastic so I have not had an issue with mildew. as far as the OSB sheeting (plywood), it is not waterproof but spraying the glue on there definitely provides a waterproofing effect to some degree. This is the second time that I have built this boat. my first Seahawk was about seven years ago and I had that vote for three or four years with absolutely no problems with the sheeting. It will not last forever, but it is affordable enough if I have to someday. Good luck with your project!
Excellent job thank you! for me I have hard time to be convinced about carpet and water 💧 🙄 😮😊 after few trip carpet rot smell crap srink so on nnnnno carpet please 🙏 😊
Perhaps better to use a single piece of carpet and use the carpet as hinges? That way the 2 piece ls are foldable and harder to come apart when unfolded.
I own an Intex Explorer 400 I'm wondering if I can do a similar thing with that one. I strongly just like the sensation of my ass sinking into the water so a solid floor would be a great modification

This must be more comfortable that just the regular bottom. Great DIF!
Definitely gonna do this. Brilliant.
This was a great idea and thanks for sharing.
Great idea flipping the boat over to and using cheap plastic for your template! Definitely going that route. Thanks!
Good luck with your project!
Well I just went down Aare with this exact boat using it the first time and I can say I would have loved to have had a proper floor.
Cool! That’s also good if your fishing you can cast a lot better because the ground isn’t squishy! Really cool mod
I’m a pretty big guy and this thing was pretty sturdy. The plywood clips will make it even better. Thanks for watching!

With a few adjustments I think this floor will be great. Next week’s video is all about the motor mount, thanks for watching!

Do you inflate the floor when using the custom wood flooring?
Yes! I have experimented with inflating the floor 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and fully inflated. It seems to perform best about 3/4 full! Great question!

Use pressure treated/marine plywood. Already water proof.
Do you have any better suggestions?
@peterstarck564 wouldn't the floor cost more than the boat then? I can't seem to find any marine grade playwood for less than 400$ here.
Maybe some pool noodles on the joints to reinforce the weak point.
Thanks for the video...
Very well planned out. Nice detailing the steps. I’m a new subscriber to your channel..

Welcome to the channel and thanks for watching! I’ve made a few videos for this boat and there are a few more in the works!
I get a lot of water in the raft when splashing around and playing with the kids, do you need to waterproof the plywood?
I have not needed to waterproof but your situation sounds different than mine.

@@MrFredsDIY in my case, I'm going to be using the oars
Hey so for anyone that’s tried it how much did it cost? I’m waiting to do it until I have some money saved up
what happens though when carpet gets wet
Could you have added small hinges and made it foldable???
I joined mine with piano hinges so it folds up😁
If I did I would keep the carpet in one piece and make it so it folds right sides together
I don't know why, but I keep thinking Kane is voicing this video. I never knew Kane was such a woodworker haha.
I had to cut my boat floor in half to fit in my car will it lose stability?
I like the thin piece of dry erase board underneath and the plywood clips. It’s not perfectly stable but it works great!
Awesome
It doesn't come out a couple cm to big because of the inflation of the bottom?
After the boat is fully inflated it squeezes the floor and holds it in place.
@@MrFredsDIY I left you a message on your other dinghy video which I can't wait to try.....with your advice.
@anja2716 The only transom mounts that I have found for these boats use the mounting system like my boat has.
@@MrFredsDIY Ok. Do you think I could tie them somehow as theres no grommets/brackets/hitching posts? I don't know what they're called.
Perhaps you could somehow mount an apparatus of some sort to a wooden floor.
How much glue did you used?
I bought two cans but only used 1 1/2. Thanks for watching!
I have Painted a few coats of polyurethane on my plywood just to try and waterproof it as much as possible 🧐

The floor is roughly 13 mm thick.
19/32" seems flimsy from the video but I've worked 1/2" and it was pretty stinkin' rigid.
19/32" is 1/2". It's commonly referred to as half inch, but technically it's made as 19/32" which is slightly thicker than 1/2".
