Common launches music program in maximum security prison

- Oscar, Emmy and Grammy award-winning artist Common is on a mission to re-imagine the nation's criminal justice system. About 96% of incarcerated people in the United States have a chance of returning to their communities someday. Jericka Duncan recently met up with him at Stateville Correctional Center, a maximum-security prison in Common's home state of Illinois.

Love this, Common. You are an evolved human-it can be felt through the screen! I’m a certified music therapist and we need friends like you to be affiliated with our organization-especially bc most of the time we aren’t allowed to bring ANYTHING into a maximum security facility due to safety concerns. Guitar strings are unfortunately viewed as harmful objects…
Maybe you could help pave the way to establish more programs like this throughout the country. Please reach out to the American Music Therapy Association. You would be a perfect keynote/guest at one of our conferences. ♥️🙏🏻

i appreciate the thought and the effort but if we can’t even “afford” music in our schools for children, i don’t understand how we can afford it for the incarcerated.
Yeah, just put them all in a hole with nothing but bread and water. You know, it doesn't have to be a choice to fund both, it's a certain right wing party in this country that has starved school funding..

(Guitar strings, for example, are often viewed as potentially harmful objects in maximum security). Not to mention you would be a perfect keynote speaker at a conference.

why not put programe in the community that really need it like the inner city. Kids their loves music and it should keep them out the street and prison but .
