- A self-portrait by artist Frida Kahlo sold for just under $35 million this week at Sotheby's in New York. The sale highlighted how the works of women artists can command incredible sums on the world market. But that hardly tells the whole story. Anthony Mason has more.

This was such a great piece of news. Women’s art is so not given the credit that it deserves. So many women artists are fantastic, and so much we are missing out on. 👍🏼👍🏼👏🏼👏🏼

I am a woman artist, a painter for over 45 years. You would think that with a name like mine (Evan) it would help, but no. I still sign paintings with only my last name. It's shameful that even now women account for so little of the attention given to the art community. There are LOTS of us out here, working and striving to produce meaningful art, but sadly it continues with little notice or appreciation.
Of course there is also the issue of where the artist lives and how that impacts the lives of the artists working there. I live in an area where art seems of little importance overall and there is little to no education about art and its importance for enriching our world.
I have been a welder for 40 years, I've never met a woman that stayed with this as a career. They would make a good living and recieve equal pay and generous benefits. I also know a lot of guys that started at the bottom and are in the top levels of management. Several own millionaire companies. Yet complaints about income inequity are the new national anthem.
Artists are born to their love of paintings and then drawings. I studied fine art in college and it’s just lovely to do! 💜☮️🇺🇸🌻💙
Alice Neel did get a restrospective exhibition in NY this year.
My sister, a Latina woman, just started her small but wonderful art gallery. So far she’s featured Latina women artist. But I agree, we need to bring forth more women artist.

Tragic that we are still calling for equity when the artists have been doing their work, epic institutional failure in these United States ,too bad noone on your research staff was made aware of the work of the Guerrilla Girls in the eighties who made very public the inequities in the institutions and market place. Also zero mention of the Womens Museum in Washington D.C. The story is being written , the question is why have you have not been covering it. Why is this being written because Frida Kahlo' s painting commanded serious money at auction, a woman of color. Consider your own record of coverage.
It's a morning show; the level of depth they're allowed to go seems to be pretty shallow. If anything, this should be treated as an introduction to the inequality women face in the art world. The news about Frida’s work selling was just clickbait for people to listen to the actual story. Art21 does an amazing job at shedding light on women artists of today.

The market, not the gender of the artist, determines the value and demand of a painting.
Didn't Madonna buy a great deal of Frida Kahlo's paintings when she went to Mexico? If so, good investment when a celebrity can recognize an amazing talent like Frida Kahlo. Finally, woman are gaining strength in the world of Art where in the past it was the male artist who excelled after death.
Madonna owns several important Kahlo’s. My Birth & Self Portrait with a Monkey in particular.
Funny that when anyone looks at a painting or work of art they don't ask themselves if a man or a woman painted it, they ask themselves if it's good or bad in their eyes. Male and female firefighters both put out fires as well.

You know what’s weird, it’s art right? You look at art and judge it from that. Why does it matter the gender who made it?
Exactly, so why exclude women from exhibits and from art history, especially when they were pioneers? It shouldn't have mattered, they should have been included, and now, gradually, that's being rectified.
