15:38 ‘They were dancing; drinking wine, making love’ is ripped directly from Grant Morrison’s run on X-Men; and is one of my favorite lines in any comic
Yeah.. except in the comics it was "they were drinking tea... making love". They added dancing and wine instead of tea, which actually sounds better. lol

Storm's VO is incredible; you can feel the emotion with every line. And the fact that she does the demon's voice as well is an excellent choice by the casting team to show her conflict.
Gladiator is arguably the most ‘Supermanesque’ of all Marvels Superman clones (Hyperion, Sentry, Omega the Unknown, Blue Marvel etc). His strength and weakness are all based on his self confidence meaning the more confident he is in himself the stronger he gets and vice versa.
Storm freaking out at being trapped is because she's extremely claustrophobic, something that stems from when she lost her parents. They were killed by an airstrike during the Suez crisis (at least originally, no idea what the current version of things is, what with the sliding timescale), and she was trapped under rubble for several days, IIRC. And all the Shi'ar Imperial Guard are all homages to the Legion of Super-Heroes. Dave Cockrum, the artist who created the Imperial Guard (along with Storm, Colossus, Nightcrawler, and others) was the artist for LoSH in the early 70s, until he left DC for some reason I don't remember.
its so funny how if Charles hadnt felt what happened in Genosha, theres a good chance he wouldve genuinely changed a whole galactic empires direction with a single class/lesson
Eh, maybe, or maybe not. Could have just been another example of Charles being entirely too idealistic and thinking that if he just lectures people long enough they'll come around to his way of thinking eventually. Realistically I can't imagine the Shiar councilors will be like "Oh my god, are you telling us that our space EMPIRE was built on the back of IMPERIALISM against other races? I am shocked! We must reform immediately!"
Gladiator is John Byrne' s proof of concept of how he thought Superman should work, in the pages of the Fantastic Four, before he made the move to DC comics.
The X-Men and Magneto all know that Charles is alive. They way him off at the end of the series. They just have to sell the lie that he’s dead to everyone else.
I think the xmen didn't know for sure that Charles was alive ..at the end of the series yea he got taken to space but no guarantee he was gonna live..hell in the first episode while jean and cyclops were talking and they showed the death certificate they sure were talking like he was dead
It was pretty heartbreaking and horrifying to have Charles feeling “the massive disturbance in the Force” the Genosha Holocaust caused… especially Gambit’s death… calling them all his “Children of the Atom”.
Going into the episode, I thought the two storylines just seemed way too different to be packaged together until it got to Xavier's lesson. That's when it clicked that it was an examination of colonization on both a macro and micro level. The lie that builds empires and leaves the individual culturally crippled and devoid of self-worth. You are weak and your culture is unsophisticated-we will help you because you are incapable of helping yourself. The themes go harder than I ever expected in this episode.
I think you can also take Xavier’s speech and apply it to just geek culture as well. With all the Marvel vs DC, Star Trek vs Star Wars vs Dune etc. The idea of they can’t all be great or has to be better than the other and all that being complete Bull.
Lelandra was in the original "Phoenix Saga" episodes in the 90's X-Men cartoon. She was the sister of D'Ken, who wanted to control the M'kraan crystal.
Gladiator has 1 weakness...if he's NOT confident he lessens with power, but when confident he is arguably one of the most physically strong characters in the Marvel Universe, rivaling the Hulk and Sentry(has tossed Juggernaut aside)he has collapsed stars in his bare hands...along with his other abilities(flight, able to travel faster than light, super speed, laser eyes, invulnerability, super breath, etc...)
there was list of episodes to watch from the original show to understand the last few episodes in x-men 97 and it helped cause i couldn't remember what went on the old show
One minor correction: the other X-Men (and Magneto) knew that Xavier wasn't really dead As for the Kree, they appeared very breifly in one episode of the original show: Lilandra has to consult the Supreme Intelligence (and the Skrull leader) on how to deal with Dark Phoenix
If only we had more teachers in the world like Professor Xavier! He just gave the perfect explanation as to why imperialism never truly works or lasts.

Personally, for me, this is the weakest episode, mainly the Professor X stuff. It doesn't mean it's bad by any means. In actuality, it's really good. It's just that every other episode is so great. Also, "Milky Way Ghetto" never ceases to make me laugh😂😂😂
So Charles has just been bumming around in space with the Shi-Ar Empire. Meanwhile Storm is going through it, wait is Forge a Master of the Mystic Arts?
6:32 - This line makes me cringe so much. Forge lives in the desert, he's voiced by a native actor, and this show was produced by a California-based studio, so you would think that *someone* among the cast and/or crew would have known that "cacti" is plural and the word "cholla" is not pronounced "cha-la."
Ghetto? Earth beat back Galactus. In the comics, by the time the Pheonix Saga came about, they did that twice! Assuming this was also the case in the animated universe, I personally think Xavier had plenty of pushback with that alone to defend him being from Earth. Galactus ain't a pushover.
Having a palate cleanser episode (change of pace episode) after an extremely emotional or pivotal episode is soooo 90’s format. Don’t know why they do this but I remember this being very common.
They're actually very similar, both being reformists working inside an oppressive system to change it for the better rather than overthrow it overnight. Also having similar super powers gives them common ground to the understand each other's burden
